Victorian Harvest Ball Set In Parkesburg BY FRANCINE FULTON
Planning is underway for a Victorian Harvest Ball to be held on Sunday, Oct. 31, at the Schneider Parish Center, 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg. The first-time event will include a catered dinner, a silent auction, historic displays and the Victorian Dance Ensemble, which will demonstrate dance steps and provide instruction. The Victorian Harvest Ball is a fundraiser for Parkesburg’s 150th anniversary celebration, to be held on Friday to Sunday, May 20 to 22,
2022. “It’s almost a prelude to some of the activities we will enjoy in 2022,” said Kathleen Hood, a member of the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial Committee. The event will open with a social hour and hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and a cash bar from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A catered dinner will be served buffet-style from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guests will be seated at round tables in the parish center. “The meal will be catered by Traditions Catering,” Hood noted. “We will provide a mini dessert selection.” See Victorian Harvest Ball pg 2
Organizers of this year’s Atglen Community Day include (from left) Cristi Hahn, Lillian Thompson and Pat Softchin.
fter a scaled-down version of Atglen Community Day was held in September of 2020 because of the pandemic, the annual event will return with a full slate of activities this year on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Atglen Community Park, 404 Ridge Ave., Atglen. “We are back 100%. Some of the things we have done in the past but skipped last year (are) a live auction, a pie-eating contest, the dunk tank and a moon bounce for children,” said Cristi Hahn, office coordinator for Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, noting all these activities will return this year.
A
The event is organized by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church and Atglen Public Library (APL), with support from Atglen Borough and sponsoring businesses. Proceeds will go to the library and local service organizations, including the Christiana Fire Company, the Christiana Community Ambulance Association, the Parkesburg POINT youth center and the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. “This year we are not requiring masks, but we are following current CDC guidelines,” said Lillian Thompson, event co-chair, noting that hand sanitizer will be available throughout the day. Crafters, along with community organizations, government officials
and home-based business vendors, will be set up in the park. Those who would like to reserve a space may do so by emailing Maureen.K.Fox@gmail.com. There will be entertainment throughout the day, including Matt Holub on acoustic guitar. The Da Vinci Center will present a science show at approximately 11 a.m., and Critter Connections will bring live animals and reptiles to view at 3 p.m. Members of the Octorara Ballet and Steel City Dance and Gymnastics will offer demonstrations throughout the day. The Octorara Junior-Senior High School band will perform the national anthem during the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. See Atglen Community Day pg 4

After a year’s absence because of the pandemic, the Top Dead Center (TDC) Motor Club’s annual car show will return this year at a new location. The 12th annual Drive Out Hunger Car Show and Food Drive to benefit the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB) will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lexus of Chester Springs, 400 Pottstown Pike, Chester Springs. The rain date is Saturday, Sept. 18. On display will be all types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorcycles, antiques, classics, rat rods, street rods and muscle cars. “About three-quarters of the lot will be cleaned out for us,” noted Joe O’Fria, club president. “We will also have a live band this year - Lisa Chavous and

the Philadelphia Blues Messengers.” Epicurean Garage will offer food for sale. Owners interested in displaying their vehicles will be asked to pay a registration fee and to donate three or more nonperishable food items for the food bank. Registrants will be entered into a drawing to win a cash prize. “ We will also have close to 100 door prizes to give away to participants,” O’Fria said. Prizes will include gift certificates to local stores and eateries, as well as car-related items. Spectators are invited to attend the car show for free, but they are asked to donate nonperishable food items for the CCFB. A truck from the food bank will be on hand to accept the donated food. Monetary donations will also be accepted. A total of 35 trophies will be awarded. The awards ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m.
A panel of judges will present first-, second- and thirdplace trophies, and there will be a People’s Choice Award as well. There will also be some unique car show awards such as Whoever Traveled the Farthest, Oldest Car - Female Owned and Oldest Car Youngest Driver. The trophies are custom made by club members out of old car parts that are cleaned, welded together, powdercoated and then painted. Club members are currently meeting regularly at trophy-making workshops in preparation for the show. Club members, who pay a yearly membership fee, meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Epicurean Garage, 570 Simpson Drive, Chester Springs. Guests are welcome. Having a specialized vehicle is not a requirement, as the club is open to owners of all types of vehicles.
Lexus of Chester Springs is located on Route 100, just north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike entrance. For more information about the car show or to register, call 484206-5109 or visit www.tdc motorclub.com or www.face book.com/tdcmotorclub. From 7:30 to 9 p.m., attendees can continue to bid on silent auction items as well as view historic displays by Gerry Treadway, Parkesburg historian and author of “Parkesburg Bottles.” Author Bruce Mowday will be on hand during the social hour to sign copies of his book, “Parkesburg.” Professional photographer Shelly McKenna will be available to take event photos and portraits. The Victorian Dance Ensemble, which is the performing troupe of the Civil War Dance Foundation, will perform and instruct from 8 to 10 p.m. “They will be coming in full costume,” Hood pointed out. “We are encouraging folks to wear period garb, but that is optional. They can come as
they wish.” She noted that several venues were considered before the committee chose the Schneider Parish Center to host the event. “The Schneider Parish Center is large enough to accommodate us,” Hood noted. “They use the space for a variety of activities, (including) weekly Masses. This was the perfect option. It’s a beautiful space. We feel lucky to have it.” The Victorian Harvest Ball is a joint effort between the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial Committee and the Parkesburg Area Special Events Committee, and it is supported by the Parkesburg Historic Commission. “We are planning a special take-home item for everyone who attends to help them
remember the dates for the sesquicentennial anniversary in 2022,” Hood said, adding, “We’re excited to offer this (Victorian Harvest Ball) whether people want to dance or spectate. It doesn’t really matter. It’s an event for the whole community.” Tickets are available at the Parkesburg Municipal Building, 315 W. First Ave., Building 1, Parkesburg. Tickets can also be purchased at www .facebook.com/Parkesburg Sesquicentennial or www. eventbrite.com by searching for “Parkesburg Victorian Harvest Ball.” For additional information, email Parkesburg Sesquicentennial@gmail.com. also grows Asian eggplant, black beauty eggplant, and little finger-size eggplants, along with a few ghost peppers and bell peppers. Squash, Swiss and rainbow chard, pink celery, ground cherries, zucchini, radishes, beets, and lettuce are also growing in the garden. Weekly, Caravantes takes his crops to Philadelphia, where he sets up a stand near the Please Touch Museum and reaps some of the benefits of his harvest. But generosity is in Caravantes’ blood, and he and his mother said they are impressed with the hearts of those in Lancaster and Chester counties who seek to help others. To that end, Caravantes has donated tomatoes to The Factory Ministries, and other produce to the Octorara Food Cupboard, Mision Santa Maria in Avondale, and the Community Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA) in Coatesville. Caravantes is also generous in person, offering this interviewer a tasty tomato as we began to chat. “I love Chadwick cherry tomatoes,” he said. “They’re delicious.” The Plain community has been welcoming of Caravantes and helpful to him on his farming journey. “I have been learn-
ing a lot from Amish farmers we know,” he said, adding that Plain community members and other area growers have given him tips on when to start certain vegetables. Likewise, Caravantes is eager to share his own knowledge, starting a garden club with fellow students at Delaware Valley Friends School, where the group has studied aeroponic growing and sustainable agriculture. Readers who would like to learn more about Caravantes’ growing operation may email quakerfarmerorganic produce@gmail.com.

For 16-year-old Armen Caravantes, the love of gardening started a few years ago with the community garden program at the Parkesburg Library. He and his mother used the raised bed gardening program to get outside and spend some time together. Like his grandparents before him, he and his mother enjoyed the gardening. So, the next year, they planted in even more of the beds. Caravantes became so interested in growing vegetables, he enrolled in the Seeds to Supper educational program offered by the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB). At the same time, seeing the health issues facing his family Caravantes decided to focus on organic methods of raising produce. When COVID-19 restrictions were put in place in the spring of 2020, the Wagontown resident rented a plot of land in Lancaster County, and he and his mother began raising vegetables in earnest. His family eats some of the produce, sells some of it, and donates some of it. This year, Caravantes rented a 30-by-240-foot plot in Kinzers, where he grows a variety of vegetables using organic methods, which means no pesticides, herbicides, or chemicals. The land was prepared for planting before Caravantes put down weed barrier and put in his plants. He grows many of his vegetables, including all the tomatoes, from seed. He travels about 20 minutes to tend heirloom tomatoes, including indigo apple tomatoes that have a bluish hue when they begin to grow. He

Volunteers packed more than 1,200 shoeboxes.
North Region of OCC, held an outdoor shoebox packing party in the driveway and garage of their Chester County home on Aug. 23. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants filled shoeboxes in assemblyline fashion with items such as hair accessories, school supplies and stuffed animals. Volunteers came to help from throughout the area, and some are members of Calvary Chapel, Chester Springs, where Amy and Will attend. More than 1,200 boxes were packed during the day. Will and Amy held a similar packing party at their home in 2020, but they had to limit attendance because of the pandemic. “(OCC) delivered 9 million shoeboxes in 2020; a typical year is 11 (million) or 12 million,” said Amy. “Canceling it was never an option.” Will and Amy have been involved with OCC for a number of years and have personally taken part in shoebox distributions in several countries, including Paraguay. The couple shops year-round for OCC, buys in bulk and gathers donations. “They were getting rid of a bunch of Kohl’s Cares stuffed animals for 75 cents (each), so we bought 700 of them,” said Amy, noting that one day prior to the
packing party, 60 Kohl’s boxes filled with stuffed animals were delivered to their home. This year, National Collection Week for OCC will take place from Monday, Nov. 15, through Monday, Nov. 22. Local donation sites include Gateway Church in Parkesburg, Calvary Chapel of Chester Springs and East Nantmeal Christian Fellowship in Elverson. Specific times and additional locations can be found beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at www.samaritans purse.org/what-we-do /operation-christmas-child. Suggested shoebox gifts include toys, such as dolls, finger puppets and foam balls; personal care items, such as washcloths, hairbrushes and combs; and craft items, including coloring books, pens and pencils and stickers. Senders may also include a personal note to the recipient. Amy said that each box should contain a “wow” item. One of the “wow” items that the Shaws packed this year is a soccer ball with a manual air pump. For more information, email occphilly@aol.com or search for “OCC Regional Area Coordinators in PA (Mid-Atlantic North OCC)” on Facebook.
4-H Livestock Show And Sale Held The Chester County 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held on Aug. 9 to 11 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. Judge Ed Keeny commented on the depth in each class in both the market goat and sheep shows and congratulated the exhibitors on the quality of their projects. The beef cattle were judged by Drew Cashman, and on Aug. 10, judge Kyle Livingston worked his way through a competitive market hog show. Record crowds were on hand each night to watch the 4-H livestock shows and view the various projects completed by community clubs and outreach members. The sale averaged well above the market prices on auction day. Four steers, 79 hogs, eight goats and 47 lambs were shown and sold at the annual event. Buyers came from all over the
region to support the sale. The Champion Steer, weighing 1,388 pounds, was shown by David Bell of Nottingham and purchased by Oxford Feed and Lumber, a long-time supporter of the Chester County livestock program. The Reserve Champion Steer, weighing 1,441 pounds, was shown by Olivia Macomber of Elverson and purchased by Shane Yarnall of Downingtown. The Champion Market Hog was also shown by David. The 277-pound hog was purchased by MidAtlantic Farm Credit of Mount Joy. The 268-pound Reserve Champion was shown by Sarah Uhlman of Exton and purchased by longtime sale supporter Margaret Duprey of Cherry Knoll Farm. Sixty-one of the 79 market hogs in the sale were sold as freezer hogs, See 4-H pg 7

The team won the state judging contest and plans to attend several regional contests this fall. The lamb was sold and donated back 17 times by 19 different businesses and individuals. In addition, 23 individuals and businesses provided additional funding to the team through cash donations.
