John Miller, who owned the Compass Inn, sold ground to the new church for 5 shillings, and the first rector was the Rev. Richard Backhouse. People may view a photo of the 1838 church sanctuary on display in the back of the church and compare it to the sanctuary of today. “The church used to be the other way around. What is now the front was the back, and what is now the back was the front,” George-Hacker said. “These are the

World Of Wheels from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer
R046658
The sixth annual World of Wheels car show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Encounter Church, 300 Hideaway Drive, located off Route 472 south of Quarryville. A rain date of Sunday, Sept. 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. has been set. Participation in the show is not limited by make, model, age, or type of vehicle. “It’s open to anything with wheels. Our tagline is, ‘If you can ride it or drive it, you can show it,” said Kim Bandy, who coordinates the show with her husband, Jerry. “One guy brought his big, deluxe motorhome one year. Another year, a guy brought an 18-wheeler.” Converted bikes have also shown up at the event, which attracted more than 85 vehicles last year. Kim noted that some cars have been trailered to the event, and that is OK. “We have plenty of parking,” she said. The event will be casual; there will be no adjudication of any vehicles, nor will prizes be awarded. Additionally, every aspect of the event will be free of charge. “Registration is free. The food is free. The fun is free,” Kim declared. A church member who likes to grill will prepare burgers and hot dogs. Chips, freshly popped popcorn, desserts, and beverages will also be offered. Kim related that while she and Jerry are committed to ensuring there are no expenses for exhibitors or spectators, they put out a donation jar at last year’s show at the continued urging of a regular participant with the promise of giving the funds to a local charity. That jar amassed about $220 for Solid Rock Youth Ministries in Quarryville. The Bandys are still working on deciding which organization to support this year. Music will be played by a worship leader at the church. “We’re trying to take it more toward Christian music,” Kim said, explaining that she wanted something other than the oldies music typically played at car shows. Encounter Church’s elder team and prayer teams will be on hand to pray with people who request it. Information about Christianity will be available at the registration table. “We try to keep it a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. It’s our desire to bless our community with an afternoon to relax and hang out with old friends and get to know a few new ones,” Kim commented. “Mostly people just come and hang out. Everybody brings their lawn chairs to sit by their cars or get up and mingle.” Visitors are welcome to return to Encounter Church on Sundays for worship. The church recently began offering two services instead of only one. Worship services and the children’s ministry for infants through eighth-graders run concurrently at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Refreshments are offered in the café between the services. For more information about Encounter Church, readers may visit https://encounter churchpa.org. Those who have questions about the World of Wheels may call Jerry at 717-940-0766. Pictured on front: Jerry Bandy invites automotive enthusiasts to enter or attend the sixth annual World of Wheels car show at Encounter Church on Sept. 21. Shown with Bandy are a 1996 Ford F-150 (left) and a 1965 Ford Mustang.

Community Day from pg 1 There will be two moon bounces, with a discount given to those who donate a nonperishable food item. A mechanical bull ride will be a new addition to the games area this year. The popular dunk tank will also return. “We usually get a police officer, a firefighter and teachers. We try to get people in the community that the kids all know and want to dunk,” said Lillian Thompson, who is co-chair of Atglen Community Day along with Cristi Hahn. Thompson is also board president of the Atglen Public Library (APL). Vendors and crafters will be set up along Ridge Avenue. Those interested in reserving a space during Community Day may contact Maureen Fox at 484-467-1430 or

Walk for Life will receive a T-shirt. Participants are asked to pay a registration fee or enlist sponsors to support their walk. There will be prizes for those who bring in the highest total of donations. Children walking and in strollers are invited to accompany adults. No pets will be permitted. This year, a flag football tournament has been added for adults, taking the place of the tug-of-war event from previous years. Instead of teams pulling a rope against one another, they will be pulling flags from opponents to “tackle” them. “The ‘pull’ is the flag football - you pull a ribbon off,” explained Debbie Davenport, executive director. “We wanted to stay with the same theme.” Typically, teams for the tug-of-war - and now the flag football event - are fielded by local businesses that support Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone. The competition will feature five-on-five football games, with teams of up to seven members. Teams are asked to register online in advance no later than Saturday, Sept. 21, for scheduling. A chicken barbecue will be held, and
limited ultrasound, abstinence presentations, STD education and prenatal and parenting incentive programs. Most recently, two staff members have been certified to teach an educational curriculum in the public schools that deals with decision making and dating violence. “One of the things we’re trying to do is educate in the community. There is so much going on now that our teens are exposed to, (and) we want parents to be educated,” Davenport said. “Statistics for dating violence are astronomical. We want parents to be aware of the signs.” Staff members encourage the community to attend the upcoming Walk-Pull for Life, which will be held rain or shine. “The youngest to the oldest in the community could come out and enjoy this,” said Mary Wilson, development and church liaison. “It’s just a great community day. There is absolutely something for everyone. It’s just going to be an incredible time to come out and support life.” For more information about the WalkPull for Life, readers may email events@pregnancyresources.org or visit www.facebook.com/pregnancyresources.or g and choose “Events.”

added that the club has expanded the layout significantly. “I have been here four years, and we have added many buildings and four trains in that time.” G-gauge trains, which can be used indoors as well, travel on approximately 300 feet of track. One of the diesels pulls a passenger car, and another pulls freight cars. The third pulls coal cars and a whimsical Lifesavers car. The trolley makes regular stops, but sometimes a club member replaces the trolley with a brightly colored ladybug that zips around the tracks. The trains whistle, and the bells ring. Buildings that were not constructed by club members are German made, and some are ceramic. The layout includes a miniature replica of the Lancaster train station, along with a tiny Harrisburg station. WE ALSO FINISH BASEMENTS
Located in the courtyard of the Aspen personal care building at Landis Homes is a miniature setting that is home to a steam engine, three diesels, a trolley, two train stations, and a number of houses, churches, and businesses. “We call it the Garden Railroad Village,” said Bob Landis, one of the members of the club that keeps the trains moving from spring to fall. The village will be one of 10 stops on the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s 13th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6. The self-guided, familyfriendly tour will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., with tour sites in Manheim, Lititz, Lancaster, Wrightsville, and Coatesville. There is a cost for the tour, with children age 5 and under admitted free of charge. According to Landis, the 25-by-50foot area that now holds the tracks and trains was a lot smaller when the club first laid it out in 2005. “(We started)
the east end of the layout, and a water tank is available to service the steam engine. Throughout the garden, most of the vegetation is natural to the area, with moss mixed in with the plants. A few of the plants surrounding the pond are artificial. “We have a fountain and a couple of fishermen there,” said Landis. “There’s a gazebo.” The garden opens in May and closes in October. During the regular season, the garden is generally open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is also open for special occasions, such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Grandparents’ Day. It will also be open for Landis Homes Fellowship Day on Saturday, Sept. 14. Club member John Buckwalter has done the math to calculate how far the trains travel during a typical season. “They run approximately from Landis Homes to Des Moines, Iowa, or Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Tampa, Fla.,” said Buckwalter. “(That’s) 1,023 miles per season.” Garden Railways Tour tickets may be purchased in all Stauffers of Kissel Hill

The David’s Drive 831 charity recently donated an automated external defibrillator (AED), an emergency life-saving device for use in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, to Dowingtown VFW Post 845. The charity was founded in honor of David Turner Jr., who died of a suspected heart arrhythmia at the age of 20 on Dec. 16, 2009. At the tiem, he worked at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs
(VA) Medical Center. “(By donating the AED), David’s sister, Samantha, wanted to save other families from the heartache of a similar experience,” said David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive 831. The charity also purchased an AED in June and placed it at Triple Fresh Market in Coatesville, where David Jr. was once employed.
According to www.heart.org, an AED is a lightweight, portable and easy-to-use device that delivers an electric shock to the heart in the event that the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly. The shock can potentially stop an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and allow a normal rhythm to resume. A computer built into the AED determines if defibrillation is needed or not, thereby making the
unit safe to use. For more information about David’s Drive, readers may email davidsdrive@verizon.net or visit www.davidsdrive831.org or www.facebook.com/davids.drive. The Downingtown VFW is located at 4631 W. Lincoln Highway, Dowingtown. For more information about VFW activities, readers may call 610-269-8818 or visit www.vfw845.org.
