Atglen to host Community Day festivities

Atglen Community Day, featuring food, vendors, a car show, children’s activities, live entertainment and more, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, being presented by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church and Atglen Public Library (APL), will take place at Atglen Community Park, 400 Ridge Ave., Atglen.

A highlight of the day will be the car show, which generally attracts 30 to 40 vehicles. The vehicles will be parked along Ridge Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vehicle owners may register on the day of the show or in advance by calling APL at 610-593-6848. Dash plaques and goodie bags will be given to the first 25 paid registrants. People’s Choice trophies will be awarded to first- and second-place winners.

Events to celebrate the life of Andrew Moore

Descendants of Andrew Moore, one of the founders of Sadsbury Friends Meeting, are invited to attend a celebration of the 300th anniversary of his arrival in the United States. The event will include an open house at Greenwood Forge, Andrew Moore’s homestead, 300 Swan Road, Atglen, on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 1 to 7 p.m. for Moore family members.

The event is being hosted by Bill Wilde, who owns Greenwood Forge, which was Moore’s original homestead from 1723 to 1763. A direct descendant of Moore, Wilde has been living in and completing restoration work at the home since 1986.

Lillian Thompson. “The Good Humor ice cream man will also be on hand in uniform selling ice cream.”

Craft vendors will be set up along the perimeter of the park, and there will be booths set up by representatives from local organizations, such as Kacie’s Cause. Other attractions will include an apple pie-eating contest and a book sale by APL.

Entertainment will be offered throughout the day, including Matt Holub on acoustic guitar. “He is a mainstay of Community Day. This will be his 11th year,” noted Hahn. The event will also include performances by dancers from Russell’s Dance & Baton Studio and Steel City Dance and Gymnastics, an Abracadabra magic show and a live animal show by Critter Connections.

A live auction will begin at 2 p.m., and there will be an opportunity to win gift baskets. Among the auction items will be home decor, gift baskets and gift cards. “Auction updates, including new items, will be posted on the (Atglen Community Day) Facebook page right up until the event,” noted Hahn.

There will also be children’s games and activities. “For a fee, you get a wristband for unlimited games and the bounce house,” Hahn pointed out. Those who donate canned goods for the Octorara Area Food

“(Moore) got off the boat in 1723 from Ireland in New Castle, Delaware,” said Wilde, noting that Moore was encouraged to leave Ireland and come to the United States by his brothers. “He had two brothers already in Chester County that came over ahead of him. Parkesburg UMC to offer children’s Bible Club

Building on the success of its summertime vacation Bible school (VBS), Parkesburg United Methodist Church (UMC) will hold a Vacation Bible Club (VBC) that will meet weekly at the church.

VBC will be held on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning on Sept. 28 for children ages 5 to 12. The program will be led by Ashley Radcliff, the church’s music director.

Children are invited to attend

VBC while their parents take part in the church’s adult Bible study led by pastor Mark Beideman, which will take place at the same time. “We’re going to do the same things that we did during VBS - crafts, games, music and Bible study,” Radcliff noted.

The theme of VBC will be “Knights of North Castle,” and the program will revolve around knights and dragons. According to the curriculum, North Castle is a hidden frozen land, where its knights are on a quest to find the

knew it was my ancestors’ homestead because I was told that as a little boy growing up in Parkesburg,” he stated.

Wilde explained that he made a connection with the homestead’s previous owner Hugh Douglass, who was his French teacher in seventh and eighth grades at Octorara. “We struck up a friendship (because of) our mutual connection that we are both descendants of Andrew Moore,” Wilde said. “I told him I would be interested in buying the house. He told me that he didn’t want anyone else to have it.”

Wilde has since been restoring the home, with a goal of bringing the house back to its 18th-century appearance. Restoration work has included painting, glazing and painting the window sashes, replacing windows and reconstructing an outdoor retaining wall. “I do all the restoration work myself,”

Wilde shared. “It is a passion of mine.”

Tours of the home will be featured during the event on Oct. 14, and visitors will be able to see the home’s 18thcentury walk-in fireplace. The day will also include food and demonstrations by craftsmen. “(The event) is for descendants of Andrew Moore and there are quite a few of them in this area and across the country,” said Wilde. “We will have a large tent set up outside. People can meet and greet one another and talk about their ancestral lines. Later in the day, we will have an Irish band coming.”

Following the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service on Oct. 15 at Sadsbury Friends Meeting, 1089 Simmontown Road Gap, which is open to the public, a private Colonial dinner will be served at the homestead at 1 p.m. “We will serve an 18thcentury menu, some of which will be cooked in the fireplace,” Wilde said. The dinner is limited to 26 attendees, and a fee will be charged per person.

Wilde has established a Facebook page - www.face book.com/andrewmoore homestead - that details the restoration work that has been completed at the site, as well as information about the upcoming reunion events. Those who would like to reserve a space for the private dinner are asked to contact Wilde through the Facebook page or by email at bjwilde@epix.net.

Following the call

When Josiah Reimold of Peach Bottom was playing football at Solanco High School and being coached by a staff that included Chris Lenhart, pastor of Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) in Paradise, Reimold probably had no idea that he would one day work alongside Lenhart as part of the church’s ministry team. However, it was in high school that Reimold first felt the call to go into youth ministry.

“I felt the call halfway through high school,” recalled Reimold, who grew up in Peach Bottom. “I went to Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren at the time with my family, and the youth pastor

there got me into youth ministry.” After graduating from Solanco in 2019, Reimold headed to South Africa with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) for six months. The first three months he took part in Discipleship Training School, and the next three he worked with a team that evangelized both in rural villages and in the streets of Johannesburg. “We worked a lot with schools and children, and it added fuel to the fire I had for youth ministry to work with those kids,” said Reimold, who returned to the United States in March of 2020 on the same day COVID-19 restrictions went into place. In the fall of 2020, he started studying at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), commuting to some in-person

classes and taking others virtually. He will finish his degree in youth and young adult ministry with a minor in Bible in December.

helped to bring about his internship at CMBC, which began in May. Reimold has worked primarily with Jim Davis, pastor of administration and ministries. “(Davis) has helped me meet internship requirements and get adjusted to the community,” said Reimold, who noted that the church youth pastor position was open when he began his internship, and Reimold became part-time director of next generations in late June.

In his new position, which will become full-time after Reimold graduates, he works with youths in grades seven through 12. Presently, the youths meet on Wednesdays from 6:40 to 8:15 p.m. Activities include game time, lessons, snack, and fellowship. Among the monthly events are laser tag, a barn party, and a fundraising event to help fund the yearly mission trip in July.

Reimold is happy to be fulfilling his call. “I just want to show (students) the goodness and glory of God,” he shared. “One of the reasons I got into youth ministry is because I know these years (of youth) are very important (in shaping) the years that lie ahead,”

Reimold noted, adding, “I want to be able to help show them how great God is and how He is always present.”

Working with his former football coach is a plus, too.

Reimold said he is looking forward to Lenhart performing the wedding service when Reimhold marries his fiancée in May of 2024.

Readers who want to learn more about CMBC, located at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, may visit https:// calvarymonument.org. Specific questions about the youth program may be emailed to jreimold@ calvarymonument.org.

The call

Lions Club to host business mixer

The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will present a business mixer on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Integrous Fences and Decks, 32 Route 41, Gap. The event is free and will be held outdoors on the Integrous deck.

The mixer is being described by organizers as a networking and communitybuilding event. “I will talk a little bit about the club, but (the goal) is for people to get to know their business neighbors in the Gap area,” said club president Steve Wenrich, noting that complimentary food will be available. “We are doing a cookout with burgers and hog

dogs, some side salads, chips and drinks.”

The Gap Town Clock Lions Club formed in 2018. There was a Lions Club in Gap many years ago, but the club was revitalized and renamed as a way of drawing attention to the Gap Town Clock, a well-known local landmark.

Wenrich noted that membership is not limited to people who own businesses. “We are happy to have anybody join,” he said, adding that the club is both a service and social organization. “The goal is community service, but there is certainly fellowship involved.”

The club’s largest fundraiser has been its annual Christmas bazaar held at the Gap Fire Hall. “Thanks to com-

munity support, we have been able to donate money to the Gap Fire Company, Factory Ministries, Christiana Community Ambulance and the Pequea Valley Education Foundation,” said Wenrich. “The last couple of years we have been very successful with the bazaar.”

This year’s bazaar will also take place at the Gap Fire Hall and is set for Saturday, Dec. 2. Vendors interested in taking part in the bazaar may email steverw23@gmail.com for an application or send a message to the club on its Facebook page.

For more information about the club, the business mixer or the bazaar, visit www.facebook.com/gaplions club.

Seniors citizens post meeting

The Strasburg Senior Citizens will meet at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 Jackson St., Strasburg. Yearly membership in the Strasburg Seniors is open to residents age 50 and older in the greater Strasburg and surrounding areas.

Local historian Robert Frick will give a presentation on Gen. John Reynolds. After the meeting, bingo will be played, and refreshments will be available.

Guests are welcome to attend. There is a nominal registration fee at the door. For more information, call Jill at 717-239-1530.

Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the recreation and benefit of area senior citizens. Meetings are generally held the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips.

Historical society sets program

The Historical Society of Salisbury Township will meet on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Salisbury Township Building, 5581 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap.

“It’s Ironing Day” will be presented by Bob and Susie Lee.
