Members of the Parkesburg Lions Club have remained active during the pandemic by continuing their community service projects, including awarding scholarships, holding food drives and collecting eyeglasses. In May, the club awarded two Octorara Junior-Senior High School seniors with scholarships. Ava Zimmerman was the recipient of the Leadership Initiative Scholarship, and Jessica Moore was the winner of the Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde Memorial Community Service Scholarship, which was issued for the first time under its new name. “We always had a community service scholarship, but renamed it in honor of Bud,” said Lions Club vice president Robin McKenna. Wilde was a fourthgeneration funeral director at Wilde Funeral Home and was active at the Keystone Valley Fire Department, where he once served as fire chief. See Lions Club pg 4

people with a wide variety of disabilities and medical conditions, including muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, cerebral palsy, ALS, spinal cord injuries, stroke, cardiac conditions, arthritis, spina bifida and Parkinson’s disease. Each dog receives training adapted to meet the specific needs of its human partner. Skills may include retrieving items;

operating light switches, elevator buttons and door openers; tugging a laundry basket and putting laundry in and out of the machine; opening and closing doors; assisting with dressing and undressing; and helping an unsteady walker negotiate bumpy terrain or stairs. The dogs also provide a constant source of love and comfort to their owners. CPL also places full-service

seizure-alert dogs to detect and alert humans to upcoming seizure activity. Finally, CPL places homecompanion dogs with special-needs children or the elderly to work in the home environment. Lions Club from pg 1 In June, the club conducted a food drive at Dutch-Way Farm Market to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. The club holds food drives three or four times per year. The club has placed collection boxes in the community where residents can place used or unwanted eyeglasses. Collection containers are located at the Parkesburg Library, 105 West St.; at local eye doctors’ offices; and at Parkesburg Walmart, 100 Commons Drive. “We continually gather glasses from the area and take them to the New Jersey Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center, where they are refurbished and given to those in need,” McKenna noted. A new initiative by the club is to collect plastics through a recycling program offered by the Trex Company. Currently, there are receptacles at Fulton Bank, 100 W. First Ave., Parkesburg, and at the Parkesburg Library. “Once 500 pounds of plastics are collected, we will earn a free Trex bench (to be placed in the com-

The American Heart Association invites the community to participate in the Lancaster Heart Walk on Saturday, Sept. 25. Participants and teams will gather at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, to celebrate heart and stroke survivors, raise funds and encourage physical activity. Festivities will begin at 9 a.m., and walkers may step off at 10 or 11 a.m. Walkers will follow a 1-mile or 3-mile walking route through Lancaster. Participants can also choose to create a path of their own. From neighborhood sidewalks to tucked-away trails, any route can be used. To register, visit www.heart.org /lancasterwalk. From there, participants can stay up to date by downloading the Heart Walk mobile app and encourage friends and family to join in via email or on social media. Those walking on a path of their own can follow the festivities through the hashtag #LancasterHeartWalk. The funds raised from the Lancaster Heart Walk will go toward research, advocacy, CPR training and promoting better health in support of the association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal to reduce barriers to health care access and quality. Visit www.heart.org to learn more. The Lancaster Heart Walk is sponsored by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health with additional support from UPMC, WellSpan Health, Fulton Bank, PSECU, Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster, Penn State Health and Woodstream Corporation.

Solid Rock from pg 4

“For some parents, these programs are helpful because they have other people who care about their kids and their development,” said elementary program coordinator Luke Ragsdale. The middle school program, for sixth- through eighth-graders, will offer a time for young people to come together and experience community, friendship, mentorship, and fun in a Christ-centered context. This program will feature group games, free time, and a Bible lesson, followed by a time of small group interaction with peers and Christian adults. There will also be a special event once a month, such as glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, Minute to Win It style games, movie nights, and hikes. The middle school program will meet Thursdays from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. The high school program, for ninth- through 12th-graders, will engage students and provide them with opportunities to make friends, have fun, build mentoring relationships with volunteers, and either start or grow on their journey with Jesus. Once a month, there will be a special event, such as a corn maze, glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, miniature golf, movie night, and art/video game night. This program will meet on Mondays from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. “Solid Rock is a safe and fun environment,” said Rotz. “Students can come here and feel loved and accepted. That’s the heart of Solid Rock.” If there is ever a time that transportation is the only reason a child is unable to come, contact Solid Rock at solidrockyouthmin@gmail.com or 717-786-8007 to discuss possible options and arrangements. Solid Rock is looking for volunteers to assist with the programs. For more information, visit www.solidrock quarryville.com.
