Thriving Under Extraordinary Circumstances By Chelsea Peifer
Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood. Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013. In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a See Thrive And Grit pg 3

WFCS Plans 5K, Walk/Run And Auction
By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
The Parkesburg Halloween Parade, presented by the Parkesburg Lions Club, is a tradition that has lasted more than 70 years. The vitality of this year’s event on Saturday, Oct. 19, is surging with the addition of afternoon events at Minch Park and a fireworks display at dusk. “It’s very different from the typical parade; it’s more,” said parade co-chair Robin McKenna. The day’s activities will begin at the A. Duie Pyle warehouse property at 100 S. Limestone Road, Parkesburg. The parking lot will be the registration and staging area for the formation of the parade. Parade registration will begin at 1 p.m. Anyone is welcome to participate, either See Halloween Parade pg 3

mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancy-related breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance. “She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if
by preregistering or registering on the day of the event. Groups scheduled to participate include the Octorara Junior-Senior High School marching band. Gerry Treadway will portray Uncle Sam. “We want it to be as big and interesting as we can make it,” McKenna said. “It’s nice (to hold the parade) during the day; you can really see the people put effort into their costumes.” At 3:30 p.m., the parade will step off following the traditional route up First Street. Judging will take place on the street in front of the fire hall. Prizes will be awarded in five categories - floats, performing groups, costumed adult, costumed child and Best of Show. The parade will end at West Street, near the Parkesburg Library, and flow into activities at Minch Park, located at 400 West St., Parkesburg. Following the presentation of parade awards, activities will be held in the park from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Vehicles taking part in the parade and any others whose owners would like to participate may be part of a car display in the park. There will also be a selection of vendors at the park. The afternoon will feature live music by the Dave Mell Blues Band from 4:30 to 5 p.m. There will also be children’s games and activities. There will be a pumpkin-decorating contest, with pumpkins and decorations available for purchase to decorate on-site, or people may bring their own pre-decorated pumpkin to enter. The winner of a cash prize will be selected by People’s Choice voting for the winner. Food will be available to eat in or take out, including a chicken barbecue by Vernon Yost, hand-cut fries, hamburgers, hot dogs, desserts and milkshakes. The fireworks display will begin at dusk, approximately 7:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Fireworks were added to the Halloween Parade events this year thanks to the Parkesburg Special Events Committee. The group had planned a fireworks display for Parkesburg Community Day this year, but weather forced the display to be canceled. The committee offered the fireworks to be used for the Halloween event instead. A rain date is set for Sunday, Oct. 20. In the case of inclement weather, readers may check www.parkesburg.org for updates. For parade information or to preregister to take part in the parade, contact McKenna at 610-857-1786 or search for “Parkesburg Lions Club” on Facebook. For information on becoming a vendor at the event, call Helen Leibig in advance at 610-812-0685.

idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future. Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn. Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to. “She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.” To learn more about supporting the mission of Thrive and Grit, readers may visit www.thriveandgrit.org.

something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. A Civil War Living History Encampment will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. Civil War re-enactors from across the region will set up a Federal (Union) camp, educational displays, and more to recreate Civil War-era Lancaster and the pressures of protecting the former U.S. President James Buchanan and his home. Soldier and civilian tents will dot the Campus of History grounds, and visitors will be able to view military drills, chat with the soldiers, and attend various educational programs for free throughout the weekend. On Oct. 12, several free activities will be available, including Civil War Story Time at 10 a.m., historic clothing and dress-up at 11 a.m., Make a Handkerchief Doll at 1 p.m., and historic dancing at 2 p.m. Lantern Tours will travel through the grounds by the light of luminarias from 6 to 8 p.m. and will depart every 30 minutes. In addition, guided tours of Wheatland will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a discounted rate. Also available on Oct. 12 will be Pints With the President from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tickets for the special event will be sold online and at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees must be age 21 or older. Self-paced tours will be available from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and a special curator’s tour of Wheatland, focusing on little-known stories about the house and Buchanan, will be offered at 7 p.m. for those who want to take a deeper dive into history. The encampment is free and open to the public. For more details or to purchase advance tickets, readers may visit www.lan casterhistory.org. CEF Slates Annual Banquet Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will hold its annual Funding the Future Banquet on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. The theme will be “Rooted,” as the ministry aims to root children in Christ so they can overcome challenges in their lives. CEF of Lancaster Country has been sharing the love of Jesus with children in the public schools for 75 years. The event will feature special guest Marie Monville, former wife of the Amish schoolhouse shooter. Monville will share her testimony of how being rooted in Christ helped her get through one of the darkest seasons of her life. There will be opportunities to financially support CEF of Lancaster County. The ministry is growing, which has resulted in additional needs. To register for the event, readers may visit http://cefbanquet2019 .eventbrite.com.

The fourth annual Haunted Park and Hayride at Oxford Area Regional Park will be held on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11 and 12, from 6:30 through 10 p.m. each evening. Organized by the Oxford Area Recreation Authority (OARA), the Haunted Park is a major fundraiser that has already become a fun holiday tradition for the entire community. Each night, a tractor-drawn hayride will take visitors past spooky tableaus and into a maze of frights. The event has a new course each year, so there are sure to be new scares. The first two rides each evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. will be family-friendly, specially designed with milder scares more appropriate for younger children. After that, adult-level frights will begin, which may not be appropriate for small children. Other attractions during the weekend will include a display of hearses. Sword swallower David Peyre-Ferry will entertain crowds periodically at the park pavilion as visitors wait for or return from the hayride. A food truck will be on hand each evening. No more than 220 pounds or 25 gallons of hazardous products per household will be accepted. Hazardous cleaning and maintenance products will have the following words on the label: poisonous, caustic, toxic, flammable, ignitable, corrosive, reactive, caution, warning, danger, or hazardous. Many items, such as fertilizer or cleaning products, should be used as designed and do not need to be treated as hazardous waste. Unacceptable materials include latex paint, used motor oil, tires, asbestos, explosives, gas cylinders, household alkaline batteries, PCBs, medical waste, unidentified waste, commercial and industrial waste, ammunition, and appliances containing Freon or liquids in 55-gallon drums. While latex paint should not be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, oil-based paint will be accepted. Attendees should be prepared to take back their corrugated boxes to be recycled at the curb and Styrofoam and trash to be put in their curbside trash containers. For more information on how to properly handle unacceptable materials and for information on other regional collection events, readers may visit www.chester countyswa.org or call their municipality or Chester County Solid Waste Authority at 610-273-3771, ext. 228.
