WFCS Will Host Auction, Falcon 5K, Fun Run/Walk By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

This year, the 36th annual West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) auction is being paired with the inaugural Falcon 5K and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk. The 5K and Fun Run/Walk will take place Friday, Oct. 19, starting at 5:15 p.m. Registration will begin at 4 p.m. on race day, or participants may preregister by Tuesday, Oct. 16, at www.wfcs.org/5K. All 5K entrants who preregister will receive a T-shirt and a fast-food chicken sandwich at the completion of the run. Fun Run participants have the option to preorder a sandwich when they register online. Individuals who are not participating in the run or walk may call the school office to preorder a sandwich for a fee at 610-593-5011. Those who register on race day for either event will receive T-shirts while supplies last. No sandwiches will be available unless preordered.

The 5K will be an out-and-back course on the road, with two slight hills and rural scenery. There will be awards for the topfinishing male and female, as well as awards for seven different age groups. The Fun Run/Walk will take place on campus. No pets will be permitted; however, children in strollers equipped to travel on grass are welcome. Proceeds will benefit the Academy at WFCS, a high school program that currently serves students in grades nine through 11 with a college-style program of classroom courses that supplement and support homeschooled students. This year, the Academy has added electives and a Spanish course. “(The Academy is) not as well-known as the school, so this is an opportunity to get some exposure for the Academy. It’s also drawing the community in as well as our patrons and alumni,” said Academy teacher Kendra Ridgway. See WFCS pg 5

The Oxford Public Library, 48 S. Second St., Oxford, will celebrate Walking Dead Day on Saturday, Oct. 13, from noon to 4 p.m. Events are designed to celebrate the 15th anniversary of “The Walking Dead” comic created by Robert Kirkman, with art by Tony Moore for the first six issues and by Charlie Adlard starting with issue seven. “‘The Walking Dead’ is very popular. A lot of people read the comics and watch the television show,” said library director Carey Bresler. “The TV show is based on the graphic novel.” As part of the celebration, a zombie-themed craft will be offered at the library, from noon to 4 p.m. “The craft is a make-itand-take-it,” said Bresler. “It’s a zombie face, but it’s appropriate for children.” The library will also offer an escape room, where participants will have to solve a puzzle to get

free from the room. “This is something new for us. We want to make it (challenging), but we want everyone to succeed,” Bresler said. A fee will be charged to take part in the escape room, and space is limited. There will be six time slots offered. Tickets can be purchased at the library. “We have a certain number of tickets for each time slot. The first two are not scary - they’re just a puzzle - and the four (others) are a little scary,” Bresler explained. “(For the slightly scary sessions), there will be a zombie in the corner to remind you that it’s important for you to solve the puzzle.” She noted that the escape room will be located in the lower level of the library in the meeting room. The zombie will be portrayed by a library volunteer. “The non-scary times are for groups of 10, so younger kids can

“Not everyone can do a 5K, but almost anybody can walk a mile or push a stroller. It’s meant to be a fun family evening that everybody can be part of.” Oct. 19 will also offer an opportunity to preview auction items that will be offered for sale the next day and to bid on a selection of silent auction items. “(The 5K) is a kickoff for the auction as well,” said race director Janice McIntyre. “I like the fitness component of it and the fellowship component of it and the fundraising. We thought it would be a good way to bring people in who would not normally come to our campus, and they can preview the auction at the same time.” “We’re trying to provide a wider net to invite people in from our community in order to see where we are and, probably more importantly, who we are,” added WFCS principal Robbie Martin. “Most of the time, when you come here and visit and interact with staff and our patrons, you will find this is a special place.” Activities on Saturday, Oct. 20, will start with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m., made and served by members of the school’s eighth-grade class and their parents. The menu will include

pancakes, sausage and beverages. The eighth-graders will also help with the day’s children’s activities. Supervised child care for children in prekindergarten through third grade will be provided at a nominal fee from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from both the breakfast and the children’s activities and child care will support the eighth-grade mission trip to West Virginia. The auction will begin at 9 a.m. on Oct. 20. Featured items will include handmade quilts, artwork, vacation and travel packages, indoor and outdoor furnishings, sports tickets, collectibles, nursery stock, home and garden items, gift baskets and more. “We have lots of Eagles authenticated items this year,” WFCS public relations director Kim Hoffman said. “We also have a lovely quilt that was pieced together by a great-grandmother from the second-grade class last year.” Food will be available, including soup, hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos, pizza, burgers and soft pretzels. There will be a baked goods table with homemade cakes, pies, apple dumplings and more. WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may call the school office at 610-593-5011 or visit www.facebook.com/westfallowfield christianschool or www.wfcs.org.

East Fallowfield Township will present its annual Park Day event, rain or shine, on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the East Fallowfield Township Community Park, 900 Buck Run Road, East Fallowfield. Parking, admission and activities are free, but visitors are asked to bring new socks, underwear and T-shirts for adults to be donated to homeless and hospitalized veterans at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center through the David’s Drive 831 charity. David’s Drive noted that larger sizes of T-shirts and underwear are especially needed. Representatives from the charity, including founder and president David Turner Sr., will have a booth at the event where visitors can drop off their donations. “We are happy that they are partnering with us again,” said East Fallowfield Township manager Scott Swichar. “For many homeless veterans, basic items like clean underwear or socks are considered a luxury item out of reach to them.” For those who cannot attend Park Day, donations can be dropped off at the East Fallowfield Township Building, 2264 Strasburg Road, Coatesville, during the month of October.

worked at the Coatesville VA, where he learned that many of the veterans he served did not have necessities like underwear and socks. David wanted to buy every veteran at the VA a pair of underwear, but he never had the chance. On Dec. 16, 2009, David died at the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia. In 2010, family and friends of David created a nonprofit organization to fulfill his wish. Since then, more than $400,000 worth of underwear has been donated to the Coatesville VA. More information about David’s Drive is available at www.davidsdrive831.org and www.facebook.com/davids.drive. Park Day will feature free childfriendly activities, including a zip-line, moon bounces, face painting, hayrides, children’s train rides and a petting zoo. There will also be clown offering balloon animals, along with music and a chance to win prizes. A Halloween costume parade will take place in the park at 10:30 a.m. for children up to age 12. Goodie bags will be provided to participants while supplies last. Pony rides will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food vendors will be on hand, and there will booths set up by local crafters, as well as nonprofit organizations, such as the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance, Friends of Coatesville Library, Coatesville Area School District,

Local business sponsors made it possible for David’s Drive 831 to purchase a truck to carry donations to the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Donations of socks, underwear and T-shirts will be collected during East Fallowfield’s Park Day on Oct. 13 and at the township building during the month of October. Merge With Mercy Foundation, Hearts in Hand Community Center, Kacie’s Cause and others. Fire companies, including Modena and Westwood, will offer cut-a-car rescue demonstrations, and there will be an appearance by Subby the Helicopter and police K-9 unit. “This is our largest signature event for the township, and we utilize the whole park,” said Swichar, noting that the event is not limited to township residents. “It’s open to the community; we welcome residents from all over. It is a great opportunity for the community to enjoy entertainment at a free venue.” For more information about Park Day, readers may call the township office at 610384-7144 or visit www.eastfallowfield.org

under 4 may dine free of charge. A drivethrough line will be open for those who wish to purchase takeouts. The take-home containers will include turkey breast, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, corn, pepper cabbage, a roll and butter, and pie. Those dining in will be treated to all they care to eat of the takeout menu, with the addition of cranberry sauce and coffee. To prepare for the meal, the MOPW has ordered 400 pounds of turkey breast, 16 heads of cabbage, and 200 pounds of potatoes. MOPW members will peel all of those potatoes by hand. “It’s more fun to get together and peel them, even though it drives us crazy,” said MOPW member Shirley Miller. Church members will provide homemade and store-bought pies. The corn was grown on the Frackman farm by Deb Hoover and her family, and it was cut and frozen by Miller. The one change this year will be the use of bread cubes for the stuffing. Miller explained that Shirley Girvin’s daughter used to have access to day-old bread that MOPW members would break down for the dish, but that is no longer available, so the group has ordered dozens of bags of pre-cubed bread from a local supermarket. On the day of the supper, men from the church will join MOPW members in the kitchen to lift and carry heavy pans of food. “Everybody pitches in,” remarked MOPW member Linda Farmer. The turkey supper is the MOPW’s biggest fundraiser. Its proceeds support the group’s efforts to bless local people in need. The meal also serves another significant purpose. “We get (the public) ready for Thanksgiving,” Miller said. For more information about the turkey supper, readers may call Miller at 717-786-3690.

County Sends Out Survey As part of its on-going strategic planning effort, the Chester County Commissioners announced a countywide Quality of Life survey that asks residents to comment on their experiences in using county services and interacting with county staff. The survey, an update on Chester County Quality of Life surveys undertaken in 2009 and 2013, has been developed in partnership with West Chester University’s Center for Social and Economic Policy Research.

Survey questions seek information about recent interactions with county offices and employees, experiences using county services and facilities, as well as opinions on how tax dollars should be spent. The survey also addresses questions about the quality of life for residents of Chester County. Results of the survey will be incorporated in the county’s 2019-23 strategic plan. The survey has been mailed to 12,000 households, which represents

more than 7.5 percent of all residents. The mailed surveys were randomly sent to homes through a process where residences in each region of the County had a relatively equal chance of being invited to participate in the Chester County Quality of Life Survey.

The survey is also available at www.chesco.org/survey. The online survey takes five to 10 minutes to complete and is available in both English and Spanish. To obtain a paper version of the survey, residents may call 610-344-6280.

One of the most popular dishes offered at the Hay Creek Apple Festival on Oct. 13 and 14 is apple dumplings. The dumplings, purchased frozen, can be reheated at home and enjoyed later, or people may eat fresh apple dumplings topped with ice cream on-site. This year, people may buy dumplings, pies and crisps in advance of the festival on Oct. 12.

Joanna Furnace Iron Works, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, will be the site of annual Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 14, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additionally, the site’s mule stable will be open on Friday, Oct. 12, where people can purchase apple pies, apple dumplings and apple crisps in advance of the festival. “The Apple Festival will not be open on Oct. 12. However, the site will be open from noon to 5 p.m. for bulk food purchase and pickup,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA president. “It’s a way for people to get things before the official opening starts on Saturday. This way you can take (the apple dishes) home and put them in the freezer or thaw, reheat and eat.” On Oct. 13 and 14, the event will start with an all-you-can-eat apple pancake breakfast, which will be served from 7 to 11 a.m.

Apple treats available throughout the weekend will include apple dumplings, apple pies, apple crisp, homemade caramel apples with various toppings, apple sausage sandwiches, apple fritters, and the local traditional schnitz un knepp (apples, dumplings and ham). The 19th-century Joanna Furnace apple cider press will be operating each day. Visitors can purchase freshly pressed cider by the cup or by the gallon to take home. Mabel’s Iron-Kettle Soups, cooked over actual open fires, will include chicken corn, beef vegetable and ham and bean with rivels (small dumplings). The soups will be available by the quart for takeout and can be frozen to be eaten later. Because the final day of the Hay Creek Festival in September was canceled due to rain, the Apple Festival will offer the public an additional opportunity to buy soup. “A lot of people were disappointed that they missed out on our soup in September, so we will have extra for the Apple Festival,” said Zerr.

Elk Cam Goes Live The Pennsylvania Game Commission again has installed a camera on State Game Lands 311 in a field in Elk County that typically is a hub of elk activity as the bugling season this fall heats up. Video and sound from the camera are being live-streamed at www.pgc.pa.gov, and viewers can expect not only to see elk, but also turkeys, deer, and other wildlife. The live stream is the latest in a string of
