The Paradise Lions Club is planning its fifth Dinner in the Dark, after the 2020 event was not held due to COVID-19 restrictions. Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5

The 2021 Paradise Lions Dinner in the Dark will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. In addition to the meal and presentations by VisionCorps, which will benefit from the dinner, the event will include a silent auction. The silent auction will feature up to 35 items, including sports memorabilia, a chocolate basket, and a carpet cleaning kit. Valudes noted that past silent auctions have included experiences such as rides on the Strasburg Rail Road or a tour of WGAL. According to Valudes, the reception and silent auction start at 6 p.m., and the auction generally closes at 6:55 p.m. with an announcement. Attendees will find each dinner table has a variety of blindfolds or special goggles. “VisionCorps provides goggles that mimic various types of vision impairments, such as glaucoma,” explained Valudes, who noted some goggles will be scratched and others will be blacked out in places. “So you’re eating with that impairment (during the dinner).” She noted that participants may choose whether to use a blindfold or a particular pair of goggles. “They select how they want to experience (the meal),” said Valudes. Before the meal is served, VisionCorps will give a presentation about the purpose of the nonprofit organization, which offers a variety of services to the blind and people with low vision. The organization also discusses ways to help diners negotiate the exercise of eating dinner without their normal vision. “They will give tips on how (they teach) someone who has experienced a recent vision impairment to work their way around a plate,” explained Valudes, who noted information may include where to put the
spoon and fork, where to start eating, and where to keep the water glass. On the menu for the event will be baked chicken, roast beef and gravy, red skin potatoes, baby carrots, string beans, and tossed salad. Dessert will feature pumpkin and apple pies and chocolate cake. Lemonade and coffee will be included, and beer and wine will be available for purchase. “The menu is built to try to be conducive to vision impairments,” explained Valudes, adding that there will be no soup, peas, or other foods that are more challenging to eat with limited vision. Valudes said the event has grown since it was first held and that past dinners have attracted up to 60 attendees. “We would love to have 75 to 100 people,” said Valudes. “That would be fantastic.” She added that the Lions Club would like to raise $3,000 or more for VisionCorps. Readers who would like tickets or to sponsor a table may call 717-435-0706 or 717-278-5482.

honor of Katie. “She took the company through some very difficult seasons with a lot of grace,” said Zimmerman, who noted that the builder of wastewater treatment management systems was founded by Katie and her husband, Dan, several decades ago. After Dan was involved in a serious accident, Katie took over and kept the business running until her grown sons could take it over. “What was unusual is that she ran a company as long as she did and that she made sure employees were happy and heard,”

“I believe that even during the darkest days of your life you can find hope in something you see that’s beautiful,” said Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates for The Factory Ministries. “Our goal is to create that everywhere you look.” On Sept. 10, Dutchland Inc. in Gap and The Factory celebrated the opening of Katie’s Courtyard, a renewed outdoor space located within the walls of the former Paradise Elementary School, now the home of the Together Community Center. The area is named in honor of Katie Kauffman, who retired from running Dutchland in 2016. The courtyard was renovated by Dutchland with help from Underwood Landscaping, Gap Power, Stoltzfus Welding and Rentals, Meadowview Woodwork,s Glick Transport, Quillin Enterprises, and Lime Valley Consultants. The theme of the garden is Psalm 42 and verses from the psalm have been placed throughout, along with benches, plants, and one wandering turtle. Prior to joining her sisters, friends, Dutchland workers, and Factory staff in the courtyard for the ribbon cutting, Katie had no idea that the space was being renovated in her name. Zimmerman noted that Dutchland was looking to do a community project in
bricks and craned in tractors to level it and then started laying the foundation for the brick patio.” Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory, who has a background in landscaping, contributed to the design of the area, working with Underwood Landscaping, which them implemented the hardscape and the plants. The courtyard has been designed as a place to offer hope, comfort, and peace to members of the local community. “This will be a place specifically for folks in the midst of crisis to find peace,” said Zimmerman. Nagle noted that the area is designed with comfort in mind. “Environment matters,” he said. “The space that surrounds us tells us something, … You matter. You have worth and dignity.” The venue will be available for events and gatherings. Readers who wish to know more may visit https://the factoryministries.com or call 717-687-9594.
