Each year, millions of young children in impoverished countries receive shoeboxes full of gifts thanks to Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a program of the Samaritan’s Purse ministry. The local community had an opportunity to meet Jaki Steward, a former shoebox recipient, during a program presented on Oct. 6 at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. The program was hosted by Amy and Will Shaw of Chester Springs, who are the OCC area coordinators for the Greater Philadelphia Area Team, which includes Chester and Delaware counties. Steward, 23, explained that when she was only a few months old she was left at an orphanage in Guatemala by her young mother. During Steward’s time
at the orphanage, she lived with 70 to 80 other children. She said that one of the worst parts of the experience was sharing a toothbrush with 10 other girls. “At night, we lined up and passed that brush down the line,” she noted. “Most of the time, we just used water (to brush), or occasionally, we brushed with soap.” She said her favorite memories of living in the orphanage were when American missionaries came to visit. “They came to spend time with us and they gave us hugs, and my favorite part was the candy they would bring us,” she said. “I loved how special they made us feel, and we got to eat something besides beans and rice, which is what we ate every day. When the missionaries came, we got spaghetti or pizza.” See Shoebox Gifts pg 3

Local Churches To Host Conference

In March, Chris Lenhart did not know that Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, would soon be looking for a lead pastor when he resigned from his associate pastor position at Wesley Church in Quarryville after 14 years. “I felt a call to leave the church I was at … to pursue a lead position in another local church,” said Lenhart, who still lives in the Quarryville area. “(I) stepped away in faith believing that God had prepared (an) opportunity. (My wife, Sheila, and I) trusted that God had worked out the details and prepared our next place.” Lenhart, who was raised in Holtwood and graduated from Penn Manor, said that he and his family were committed to staying within the county. With a lot of prayer seeking God’s direction and support from mentors, Lenhart took See Pastor pg 9

Shoebox Gifts from pg 1 ministry. Without (the volunteers), there wouldn’t be stories like mine, she stated. Prior to Steward’s talk, the Shaws conducted a trivia contest about OCC, giving prizes to the those who came up with the correct answers. They reported that the OCC program, now in its 25th year, has distributed 157 million shoeboxes since its inception. For those who would like to donate a shoebox, National Collection Week will be held from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19. Many local churches will accept shoebox gifts during that week. gifts brought the children hours of joy. “The boys loved their soccer balls and their toy cars and their marbles. We played with marbles by the hour in the dirt, she remarked. “We colored every page in the books. She also noted that letters, photos and cards from the families that filled the shoeboxes were also priceless. “A stranger had taken the time to pack this gift for me and they didn’t even know me, she added. At the age of 6, Steward was adopted by an American family and two years later her parents adopted a boy from the same orphanage. Today, Steward is recently married and lives in Maryland. Three years ago she became a national speaker for OCC. “It’s been so much fun, but my favorite part is meeting the amazing volunteers behind the

Steward recalled the day that she received her shoebox gift from OCC. “One day we were called into a big room, and I remember sitting there waiting to see what was going to happen, she said. “As we looked around the room, we saw these boxes and then (volunteers) started handing them out. Every one of us was getting a gift. For a lot of us, we had never gotten a gift before. “Inside my box there were crayons and a stuffed animal, but my most favorite gift was getting my own toothbrush, she added. “I knew that I didn’t have to share anymore. Steward’s story also helps to illustrate why toothpaste is no longer allowed to be included in an OCC shoebox. “As I continued to dig further into my shoebox, I spotted a tube of something and I tasted it. I figured it was a type of American candy that I never had before, and I ate the whole thing, Steward said. “They explained to me (later) that it was toothpaste. Steward noted that the small

Haunted Park from pg 1 will be “spookified” for the event. Each year the event is revised so there are sure to be new scares. This year, younger children will enjoy a family-friendly version of the hayride on Oct. 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with the first two hayrides out on Oct. 19 and 20 also being family-friendly. After that, the adult-level frights will begin, which may not be appropriate for small children. New this year, several local businesses will be participating in the event, with displays on the park’s multipurpose field.

Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh was included in the Softie Cops 2019 calendar, an initiative of the National Law Enforcement Center on Animal Abuse (NLECAA) and the National Coalition on Violence Against Animals (NCOVAA). Welsh, a lifelong animal advocate, serves as national cochair of NCOVAA. She is also on the advisory board of NLECAA. The shared mission of both organizations is to provide resources aimed at preventing animal cruelty. Welsh explained that the organizations work with sheriff ’s offices, police departments and all law enforcement agencies throughout the country. The agencies hope that the pairing of some of the nation’s top law enforcers with animals in need will encourage others to go above and beyond to protect animals. Welsh said the dogs and cats used in the calendar were all rescues, many of which

The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) has honored several Pennsylvania county leaders and others who have enhanced the well-being of counties and residents. The awards were given at the organization’s 2018 annual conference in Adams County. CCAP’s Outstanding County Commissioner/Council Member of the Year Award was presented to Warren County’s Jeff Eggleston. Eggleston was acknowledged for his service and association participation which has contributed to the advancement of county government, including projects related to communications with townships and boroughs; the North/South Corridor Project with Chatauqua County, N.Y.; a recycling center that assists with inmate work release programs, and human services advancements. CCAP’s Outstanding Chief Clerk/Administrator Award was presented to Lawrence County’s Jim Gagliano Jr. for his service as county administrator since 2005, after serving as the county’s planning director. Gagliano has professionally and successfully met numerous challenges and currently serves as the executive director of the Redevelopment Authority, the Municipal Authority and the County Land Bank. The 2018 Outstanding Solicitor was given to Chester County’s Tom Whiteman for providing sound judgment with the best interests of the county and its residents in mind for more
than 30 years. Whiteman has used his talents on significant projects such as the construction of a justice center and a state-of-the-art public safety training campus, as well as the purchase of an emergency radio system. CCAP’s Outstanding Affiliate of the Year Award was presented to two Pennsylvania Association of County Administrators of Mental Health and Developmental Services members, Don Clark of Allegheny County and Dan Eisenhauer of Dauphin County, for their efforts in creating new options for counties to work collaboratively with the commonwealth in developing an improved county based management structure for community intellectual disability services. The 2018 Friend of County Government Award, the highest honor CCAP bestows on a nonmember, was presented to Maryann Nardone. Nardone, recently retired project manager for the Pennsylvania Legislative Budget and Finance Committee, a joint research arm of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, received the award for continued commitment to the improvement of county government by assisting CCAP and its members while maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards. Most recently, her applied research into county property assessment practices and her participation on the Local Government Commission’s Assessment Reform Task Force led to development of comprehensive reports, legislation
and practice documents for counties. CCAP’s 2018 Excellence in Website Design Awards were given to Bedford County and Chester County. Both counties’ recent website enhancements led to accessible, modern designs, with increased functionality, highlights of county services and greater transparency to improve residents’ interactions with county government. President’s Awards were bestowed by CCAP president and Lancaster County commissioner Dennis Stuckey to CCAP leaders Doug Hill, executive director; Brinda Penyak, deputy director; and John Sallade, managing director of insurance programs. The award was presented to honor commitment to CCAP’s president and outstanding contributions leading to enhanced service to county residents. CCAP is a statewide nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing all 67 counties in Pennsylvania. CCAP members include county commissioners, council members, county executives, administrators, chief clerks and solicitors. CCAP seeks to strengthen counties’ abilities to govern their own affairs and improve the wellbeing and quality of life for every Pennsylvania resident. It advocates for favorable state and federal legislation, programs and policies on behalf of counties. For more information, readers may visit www.pacounties.org or CCAP’s Twitter page @PACountiesGR.

his leave and began looking at local churches. Before the end of March, he noticed a posting on the CMBC website. “There was no opportunity (at CMBC) when we left (Wesley),” noted Lenhart, who applied for the position immediately. Over the summer, he preached at CMBC a number of times, and he officially became lead pastor there on Sept. 1. After graduating from Penn Manor, Lenhart went to Clarks Summit University in Clarks Summit, where he majored in Bible. He began working at Wesley Church as a youth pastor right after graduating from college. After serving as a youth pastor for eight years, he moved into the associate pastor role. Lenhart earned his master’s degree in religious education from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He has also completed all the necessary credits in the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) doctoral program in leadership and organizational management. In addition, Lenhart is in his 15th season of coaching varsity football at Solanco High School. He serves on the board of Black Rock Retreat, and he is a member of the LBC sport management accreditation team. The Lenharts have three children currently attending Solanco schools, and they are in the process of adopting two young brothers from Haiti. They hope to meet the boys for the first time when they visit Haiti in November. Community involvement is important to Lenhart, and he admires the way members of CMBC have reached out to residents in the local area. “I saw there was a strong connection between ministries at CMBC and a desire to reach the community,” said Lenhart, who is still becoming familiar with the church culture. He cited the Great Giveaway CMBC held on Oct. 11 and 12, the strong Awana program held Wednesday nights during the school year, and the Miracle of Jesus event the church holds yearly at The Point in Parkesburg as evidence of this connection. Looking forward, his goal is for the up to 500 CMBC worshipers to move closer to God and develop stronger relationships. “I would like to see us grow in a greater love for God and each other,” said Lenhart. “That is predominant, and that will be an important emphasis as we grow together.” CMBC holds worship services each Sunday at 8:15 and 11 a.m. Sunday school and adult Bible fellowships meet at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday. “We want to be intentional about investing in each other both in the church and in the community,” said Lenhart, “with all the relationships the Lord directs into our paths.” CBMC will hold a reception for the family at the church on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. Readers who would like to learn more about CMBC may visit http://calvarymonument.org.

Forty vendors are expected to sell a wide variety of handcrafted items at the annual craft show that will be held at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren on Oct. 27. Displaying a sample of items that might be offered at the event are (from left) Derrick Kreider holding Samantha Kreider, Kari Johnson, Acacia Kreider, and Melissa Kreider. By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“I think we have a good variety of things for everybody,” remarked Melissa Kreider, vendor coordinator for the annual craft show hosted by the Believers Sunday school class of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. For this year’s event, set for Saturday, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, Kreider cut back on the number of direct sales representatives in response to shopper feedback. Instead, the event will focus on unique and handcrafted items. All 40 vendor slots are full, and Kreider is not accepting inquiries about spaces. “Our craft show fills up over the summer,” observed Kari Johnson, Believers member and marketing coordinator for the event. This year’s craft show will feature laser-engraved and scrollworked wooden items, dog treats, fall and Christmas décor, quillows and tote bags, copper flowers, ceramics, candles, jewelry, floral arrangements and potpourri, hand-painted and chalkboard signs, stationery, metal art and rag bags, flannel scarves, felted bowls, rubber-stamping items, Haitian tinware, and a variety of baked goods, including sandtarts. The Mechanic Grove Painting Group will sell artwork.
The Women’s Fellowship will sell apple dumplings, and hot breakfast foods will also be available. Soup, salad, and sandwiches will be sold at lunchtime. Grilled cheese sandwiches have been added to this year’s menu, and a soup-and-sandwich combo will be offered. Folks may choose from chicken corn noodle, broccoli cheddar, and tomato bisque. Tables will be set up so customers may enjoy their refreshments, and high chairs will be available. “We’re very family friendly,” Kreider remarked. She noted that the venue is all on one level and is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible as well. The proceeds from the craft show will be used by the Sunday school class to pay for the community meals the group serves at Huffnagle Park in Quarryville during the summer. “Our money helps people,” Kreider said. For more information about the craft show, readers may email craftfair@mgcb.org or visit www.facebook.com/MGCBfall craftshow/. An event page has been linked from the Facebook page, and vendors are posting pictures of items they will sell at the craft show.
