Church To Host Halloween Family Bingo
BY FRANCINE FULTON
A Halloween Family Bingo will be hosted by Our Lady of Consolation (OLC) Church on Friday, Oct. 21, at the OLC Schneider Parish Center.
Doors will open at 5 p.m.; bingo will start at 6 p.m.
The last Halloween bingo was held at the church in 2019. “This is our first one back since the pandemic, so we are excited,” said Janice Dagney, OLC director of religious education.
Multiple bingo games will be offered throughout the evening, including games just for children with prizes such as large candy bars, small games and toys. “There will also be five special games with an additional cost per card that will have bigger prizes,” said Dagney.
Attendees of all ages are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. There will be a costume contest with several categories, including the cutest, scariest and most original. There will be no additional entry fee to participate, and prizes will be awarded in each category for infants to 8-yearolds, children age 9 and up and adults. There will also be a special category recognizing the family with the best themed costumes.

Building
on the success of last year’s event, WordUP Community Ministries will again present a Trunk or Treat event on Monday, Oct. 31, at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. Dinner will be available beginning at 5 p.m., and then children will be able to visit decorated cars to gather Halloween candy from 6 to 8 p.m.
Children are encouraged to dress in costume and to bring their own bags for collecting candy. Dogs on leashes will also be welcome, and some cars may even have treats for them. “We had 300 kids come through there last year,” said WordUP pastor Buck Mowday. “We
probably will have about 25 cars (this year). If we run out of space, we will do tables.”
Food items will be provided by the D&Bz food truck, which will offer cheeseburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking tacos and sodas. Only cash will be accepted for food purchases.
In addition to the outdoor Trunk or Treat, children will be able to gather more candy inside the fire company from representatives of local businesses and nonprofit organizations. Businesses and organizations are invited to set up tables and promote their products and services.
Mowday noted that there is no fee for vehicle owners or those who set up tables, but they will be
required to supply the candy. People interested in participating and handing out candy may call 717-824-2627 or 717-330-0561 to reserve a spot.
WordUP Community Ministries, a nondenominational church, is located at 160 Route 41, Gap, in the Dutchland Inc. building. The Sunday service is held in person at 10:45 a.m. and is also livestreamed at www.facebook .com/WordUPCommunityMinistries. The Sunday WordUP cafe, offering coffee and snacks, precedes the service at 10 a.m.
The Trunk or Treat event will be held rain or shine. For more information, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page or www.wordup communityministries.org.

Trail Race
The race, which is being presented by the Octorara Cross-Country Team Booster Club, is being facilitated by RunPA and the Lancaster Road Runners Club. According to event organizers, the Dire Wolf is a challenging trail run consisting of hills, rocks, roots, a rugged downhill switchback and a shallow creek crossing, which may run deeper in the event of rain.
“It’s very hilly and very challenging, but there is a very large trail running community within Lancaster and Chester counties,” said booster club member Rachel McGinnis, the Octorara girls’ cross-country coach. “People come from all over to (take part in) these trail races. They are accustomed to (trails like this).”
Race-day bib pickup and registration will be from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m., followed by race announcements and instructions at 8:50 a.m. Both the 10-mile and 5-mile races will start at 9 a.m. At the conclusion of the race, the awards ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine.
If someone breaks the 10-mile course record, he or she will receive a $100 cash award. Zach Miller currently holds the record with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 38 seconds. The top overall male and female finishers of the 5-mile and 10-mile races will receive a special Dire Wolf Award. Awards will also be given to the top three male and top three female finishers in various age categories.
Parent volunteers and booster club members will help with the race, providing post-race snacks. Members of the girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams will also be on hand to offer guidance along the course.
“All of the athletes will be at the water stations and food stations throughout the park,” said McGinnis. “The teams will also be making signs and be out there cheering for the runners.”
She noted that the park is used by the cross-country teams while training. “We train out at the park sometimes because it is a beautiful park and offers a lot of options for running,”

said McGinnis. “It’s definitely one of the prettiest county parks, especially with the (autumn) leaves.”
Organizers have a goal of attracting at least 100 runners to the event. “There is no limit to how many we can put out there,” McGinnis noted. “It’s early in the morning on a Saturday so it’s a nice way to start the weekend off.”

inventors had designed a functional sidesaddle with a chair-like construction, where the woman sat sideways on the horse, both feet propped on a footrest. Catherine de Medici, in the 16th century, is said to have developed a more practical design. Rather than keeping both feet placed side by side, she used a saddle that enabled the rider to place her right leg over the pommel of the saddle, allowing much more control of the horse and even allowing the rider to trot and canter safely and to show off her shapely ankle and calf to her best advantage.
Over time, further adjustments were made, but it was the introduction of a second pommel in the 1830s that gave women increased security and additional freedom of movement when riding sidesaddle. Now they could gallop and even jump fences with more safety, but still conform to propriety and modesty.
By the mid-1800s, the rider sat astride, with her right hip back to allow the shoulders to fall into line. The right leg was placed on the front of the saddle, with the left leg bent and resting on the saddle and the foot in the stirrup.
As for dress, it wasn’t until the late 16th century that a “habit,” as it was, and still is, called, was designed specifically for riding sidesaddle. Before this time, usual day wear was worn for riding. The first “safety skirt” was invented in 1875, buttoned along the seams, and later around the waist,
just covering the legs, which were encased in breaches. This did much to prevent women from being caught by their skirts and dragged by their horses if they fell.
As the automobile gained popularity, riding itself went out of style. Indeed, horseback riding became more the leisure sport it is today. Few women use the sidesaddle except for show in the 21st century.

The Historical Society of Salisbury Township was given a circa 1840 saddle from what was once the brick Spring
Garden Hotel, located west of Snake Lane on Route 340, now a private home. Though in poor shape today after years hanging in a barn, it remains today a great example of ingenuity, combining beauty and functionality.
