STEAM Night To Showcase Student Projects By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will hold its second annual STEAM Night on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The event is open to the entire community and will offer interesting demonstrations, displays and interactive exhibits. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The event will feature displays on aspects of each of these fields, presented by students, teachers and community members. “I think it’s a fantastic event. Here I am, 50 years of age, and I’m still learning something I didn’t know,” WFCS principal Robbie Martin said. “You walk around and people are showing you their skill sets that you probably don’t even know they have.” The event is entirely free, but visitors

are asked to register at the gymnasium first, then explore the displays inside. The gym is also the place to get free timed tickets for a planetarium presentation in the main building. The Digital Starlab, a portable planetarium, is brought in from the Chester County Intermediate Unit for classes at the school, plus it is being made available for presentations to visitors at the STEAM event. The shows will be similar to the lessons that students see in their classes. Many of the exhibits will feature student projects and class work. One such display will be a selection of pencil and rubber band catapults designed by the students. “We feel science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics are an integral part of their academic training,” WFCS middle school science teacher Kimberly Smith said. See STEAM Night pg 6

West Fallowfield Christian School eighth-grader Evan Byerley (left) and seventh-grader Maddy Herr display the pencil catapults they made, which will be a part of one of the exhibits at the school’s second annual STEAM Night on Oct. 24.

Upward Basketball League Sign-Ups Open 14th Annual Fall Fun Fest Set By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

As the end of the year approaches, so does sign-up time for the very popular Upward Basketball League. Held each year at Pequea Baptist Church in Gap, the growing league offers fun and exercise in a positive environment for boys and girls in first through eighth grades. Upward Basketball is a nationwide program provided through sponsoring churches. The program at Pequea Baptist teaches skills, plus there is also a faith-based component to the league, with time for devotionals worked into practice sessions. Last season, the league expanded to include eighth-graders, and participation increased by 55 youngsters, bringing the total number of players to roughly 200. Due to growing numbers, families are encouraged to sign up early so that planning and scheduling can begin. See Upward Basketball pg 3

OCTORARA EDITION

The Chester County commissioners recently issued a proclamation in recognition of the work done by local, county, and regional planners in conjunction with the celebration of National Community Planning Month. The commissioners adopted Landscapes3 in November 2018, renewing a vision and strategy for balancing growth and preservation. Over the past year, different aspects of the six goal areas of the plan - Preserve, Protect, Appreciate, Live, Prosper and Connect - have been addressed. The Preserve goal has been implemented through the release of the Return on Environment report, which highlights economic, environmental, and public health benefits of open space preservation in Chester County. The report was released during the Chester County Open Space Summit in May, which also served as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of open space preservation efforts in Chester County. During 2018, two major open space protection efforts the former Strawbridge estate near the Maryland border and the Bryn Coed property in West Vincent and West Pikeland were completed after three years of planning and acquisition. The Planning Commission has moved forward with the Protect goal by updating an inventory of natural resource ordinances. In addition, the Planning Commission is assisting the Chester County Water Resources Authority with an update to its water

resources plan. For the Appreciate goal, the Planning Commission is creating a National Register interactive map and promoting adaptive reuse of historic properties. The popular Town Tours and Village Walks program continued this summer, offering free summer strolls in historic neighborhoods, hamlets, villages and sites throughout Chester County. The Planning Commission is implementing the Live goal by working with housing partners to find solutions to affordably priced housing issues and will discuss tools to address this topic during a housing forum on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 10 W. Pleasant Grove Road, West Chester. The event, “Creating A+ Homes,” will focus on ways to make homes attractive, affordably priced, adaptable, aging-friendly and accessible. The forum topics will include new residential designs, policies for affordably priced homes and housing tools for municipalities. The commissioners, along with the Chester County Department of Community Development, have provided funding support toward several affordably priced housing options in the county in recent years. The Prosper goal of Landscapes3 has been implemented this year through the county’s continued support of the urban centers. The commissioners unanimously approved $2.5

million in grants through the Community Revitalization Program this summer, which went toward infrastructure projects in the city of Coatesville and the boroughs of Atglen, Honey Brook, Phoenixville, Kennett Square, Modena and West Chester. Overall, the commissioners and Department of Community Development have awarded more than $68 million in Community Revitalization Program and Community Development Block Grant program grants since 2002. Another aspect of the Prosper goal is retaining and expanding business. Additionally, as part of the Prosper goal, the Planning Commission is creating a map about redevelopment opportunities in Chester County. In addition, the Planning Commission and Department of Community Development conducted an Urban Centers Forum on Oct. 8 that focused on tourism in urban centers. The Connect goal of Landscapes3 has been moving forward through progress on several trail projects. For example, the Schuylkill River Trail construction contract will be awarded by the end of the year, and construction will begin in early 2020 on approximately 4 miles of new trail between Parkerford and the Route 422 Bridge over the Schuylkill River, as well as paving approximately 5 miles of trail between Parkerford and the Cromby Road Trailhead that is currently surfaced with stone dust. The 1-mile extension of the

Chester Valley Trail from Main Street at Exton to the Oaklands Corporate Center is anticipated to go to construction in spring 2020. The Planning Commission also will conduct a forum, “Trails, Trains and Traffic,” that will focus on public transportation, active transportation and road improvements. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the West Whiteland Township Building, 101 Commerce Drive, Exton. During the development of Landscapes3, Chester County residents identified the need for more bicycle and pedestrian facilities in their communities. To address this issue, the Planning Commission staff is working on an Active Transportation Municipal Ordinance Inventory and Outreach project. As part of the project, the Planning Commission will inventory all 73 municipalities, and the results will be used to target locations where active transportation facilities and the municipal ordinances that require and standardize such facilities are most needed. Pictured on front: Chester County Planning Commission executive director Brian O’Leary (second from right) accepted a Community Planning Month proclamation from Chester County Commissioners (from left) Terence Farrell, Michelle Kichline, and Kathi Cozzone on Oct. 15.

This will include a concert by Jellyroll, a Philadelphia-based wedding band that played at the White House at the request of President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush; a luncheon for woman veterans; and a trivia game show where prizes will include dorm-size electronics, such as microwaves. Turner said these efforts could not take place without the generosity of the community. “Every once in a while, we reach out to someone for assistance with a project and they donate instead. It’s wonderful to be a conduit (of donations),” he said. “It’s amazing what people are willing to do and even more amazing what veterans were able to do for us.” He pointed out that the motto of the charity is “Helping Veterans

Because We Should.” “People care about veterans. What keeps us going is the fact that people support what we do for veterans,” Turner stated. “It also lets veterans know that the community cares about them.” For more information, readers may email davidsdrive@verizon.net or visit www.davidsdrive831.org or www.facebook.com/davids.drive. When David’s Drive 831 was created in 2010 in memory of David Turner Jr., who died in 2009 at the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia while working at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, the goal of the charity was to help veterans by providing them with T-shirts, underwear and socks. While working at the VA, David learned that many veterans lacked these basic necessities. Today, however, the efforts of David’s Drive have grown to include an array of community service projects that benefit veterans and their families. Thanks to David’s Drive, eight veterans, accompanied by support staff from the VA, took part in a fishing trip on Sept. 30 on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. “It was awesome. We had beautiful weather,” reported David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive. “It started out a little slow, but we ended up catching enough fish for them to have two fish fries up at the VA.” The charity also had a children’s playset installed at the VA on Sept. 30 to be used by visiting families. Once the project was approved, David’s Drive purchased the playground equipment and arranged for the installation. The new playground features double slides, a climbing feature, and stairs up to an elevated platform. “We were approached by the VA, and it was a request from the

veterans that they wanted visitation times to be of better quality,” said Turner. “When the family comes, now (the children) have something to do.” As part of another effort, after receiving about 40 bikes for a discounted fee, David’s Drive coordinated a bike giveaway in cooperation with the Coatesville Police Department, including Sgt. Rodger Ollis, on Oct. 2. While most of the bikes were given away at the distribution, the police department has several remaining that it can give out at its discretion. Each recipient also received a free bike helmet. “We gave one to a veteran who has severe PTSD and anxiety issues and is unable to take public transportation, so the bike was perfect for him,” said Turner. “One girl got a little pink bike, and it had a baby car seat on the back for her doll and she was so excited about that. A couple were Spider-Man bikes that (talk) when you ride them.” The charity’s current project is rebuilding the charcoal grill at the VA and converting it to propane. “LazyMan Gourmet Grills in New Jersey donated the grill, and the VA has a mason who is retrofitting the grill and hooking it up with gas. The grill has a griddle, so we are hoping we can have a pancake breakfast for the veterans. The hearth is 8 or 10 feet wide. It’s a commercial grill designed to cook for over 200 people,” Turner said. David’s Drive will also sponsor

Good Works from pg 1 In October, Chester County is being recognized for 25 years of supporting home repairs for lowincome families through the faith-based nonprofit Good Works Inc. To celebrate the quarter-century milestone, Coatesville-based Good Works recently presented a plaque displaying a commemorative hammer to Pat Bokovitz, director of the Chester County Department of Community Development, as well as Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Terence Farrell and Kathi Cozzone. The county has been supporting Good Works for almost 25 years, according to Good Works executive director Bob Beggs. Chester County’s funding for Good Works comes from the Department of Community Development’s Housing Trust Program (HTP). A large percentage of HTP funds are directed toward Good Works’ home repair items such as furnace replacements and roof repairs that

Chester County’s HTP funding, along with other income support from corporate partners, churches and individual donors, allows Good Works Inc. to make repairs at no cost to homeowners, and volunteers do most of the work. In 2018 alone, Good Works completed 51 homes, assisted 174 families and worked 37,947 volunteer hours. The organization also seeks to be an environmental steward while netting cost savings for low-income families through projects including weatherizing homes and upgrading heating systems, repurposing used building supplies, recycling scrap metal and installing water-saving devices. Dinniman Visits Senior Center State Sen. Andy Dinniman and his poodle, Jagger, recently visited the Coatesville Area Senior Center to recognize residents age 90 or older with special Senate Certificates of Recognition. Since taking office, Dinniman has visited senior centers and

senior living communities throughout the region to offer birthday wishes to nearly 1,000 seniors each year who are part of his 90+ Birthday Program. Under the program, area seniors age 90 and older receive special certificates on their birthdays.

Dinniman said the 90+ Birthday Program is part of his effort to not only recognize the contributions of the senior community but also to ensure that local seniors are receiving support and services from tax rebates to medical assistance.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman (back, third from left) recently visited the Coatesville Area Senior Center to recognize residents age 90 years or older with special Senate Certificates of Recognition. They include (front, from left) Lana Cox, Harold Root, William Jacoby, Elaine Horning, Dorothy Jones, Flora Green, Gene Wenzel, Alberta Alston, (back) Dorothy Krokoskie, Dorris Houston, Anthony Genaro, Joseph Rudolph, and Catherine Brickus.

STEAM Night from pg 1 “STEAM concepts help prepare (students) better to move into their next academic setting or into a trade or future career. Early exposure to those sorts of things is beneficial to success later on,” added middle school math teacher Emily Lapp. Student Council members will be on hand to explain the student projects, and students from the West Fallowfield Academy, WFCS’ high school level program, will make presentations. There will also be a number of presentations from teachers and community members with expertise in a particular field of science. All exhibits will be geared toward students in third through

eighth grades, yet they will be interesting to parents and older children as well. Some of the 20 presenters will return from last year, but there will also be new ones with new exhibits. Art will also be represented in a classroom display. “Part of our goal is to bring in community members,” Lapp said. “There’s definitely something that’s interesting for pre-K through adults. (Visitors should) come ready to explore and learn some things.” WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may visit www.wfcs.org or call the school office at 610-593-5011.

Coatesville Rotary Seeks New Members The Rotary Club of Coatesville is seeking new members willing to further the club’s commitment to its mission statement of “Service Above Self” by assisting with community service projects locally and supporting Rotary International causes worldwide. Coatesville Rotary, formed in 1924, supports school students and community organizations. It also sponsors the Interact Club at Coatesville Area Senior High School. “We serve our schools’ students (by) providing dictionaries, scholarships and awards,” said president-elect David Seegers. “In addition, we collect dollars and food for the Chester County Food Bank. Each year we present thousands of dollars in grants that enable organizations (to serve the) community.” Past grantees have included Coatesville Youth Initiative, Canine Partners for Life, Coatesville Area Public Library, Coatesville Kids to College, Handi-Crafters, ChesPenn Health Services and Good Samaritan Services. “Last year we collected shoes for those in need around the world and participated in our Lincoln Highway road cleanup,” Seegers added. “Rotary (International’s) largest project is eradicating

polio worldwide.” In September, Rotary members participated in the fourth annual Coatesville Invitational Vintage Grand Prix. The club’s biggest fundraiser is selling hamburgers and hot dogs at the Brandywine Strawberry Festival. Money raised helps support community grants. On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Rotary Club of Coatesville will partner with Rise Against Hunger to package more than 10,000 meals to be sent to those in need around the world. The event will be held at Olivet United Methodist Church, 310 E. Chestnut St., Coatesville. Community members are welcome to participate. The membership currently has alternate meeting times. Lunch meetings are held every other week on Thursdays at the Coatesville Country Club, 143 Reservoir Road, Coatesville, at noon. During the other weeks, the club meets at the Courtyard by Marriott, 600 Manor Road, Coatesville, at 5:30 p.m. for a light dinner. Attendees may purchase their own lunches or dinners. The first Rotary Club was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who wanted to form a club of business professionals who could work together and exchange ideas. The Coatesville club is part of Rotary

International. According to www.rotary.org, the organization includes approximately 35,000 clubs in more than 200 countries with 1.2 million members. Seegers noted that the club originally got its name because

members would rotate their meeting locations from office to office. “Originally, there was only one member allowed from each profession. That (policy) is history,” he added, noting that today’s Rotary is open to men and

women from various professions. “We are more interested in helping the community near and far.” Those interested in joining the Rotary Club of Coatesville are invited to attend a meeting. Those who join the club must complete a membership application and will be asked to pay yearly dues. “Our club would like (prospective members) to visit us at one of our

meetings so that (they) may experience the joy of this wonderful organization,” said Seegers. For additional information, including a meeting schedule, readers may contact Seegers at dmseegers45@gmail.com. More information about the club is available at www.facebook.com/ rotaryclubofcoatesville and www.coatesvillerotary.org.

Information about the organization will be also be available at the event. Cat Angel Network has been in operation for more than 20 years. The group’s mission is to improve the situation of unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens through rescue by providing medical care, including spay and neuter services, and eventually finding the pets loving homes. Proceeds from the auction are targeted for CAN’s veterinary expenses and its spay/neuter program. “We don’t adopt any cat out that is not fully vetted, spayed or neutered,” Grabb

explained. Photos of cats and kittens available for adoption are posted on the Facebook page, at www.catangel.org and at www.petfinder.com. People can meet adoptable cats in person at two local PetSmarts 1112 Town Square Road in Pottstown and 1010 E. Lancaster Ave. in Downingtown. Adopt-athons are held on weekends at the PetSmart locations. The next adoption events will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cat Angel Network is always in need of volunteers. “We need fosters and people to work at the PetSmarts on the weekend and to help us with our adopt-athons,” Grabb said. “People are also needed to care for the cats in the stores, and we need people that can help with events.” Those interested in volunteering are asked to complete a volunteer application. Applications are available at the two PetSmart locations and at www.catangel.org/meow/ volunteer. For further information about the fundraising auction, readers may visit www.catangel.org/

race cars and motorcycles charge through the city streets. Organizers report that the event is one of the only remaining motor sport events in America driven directly through city streets. Drivers and riders of vintage race cars and motorcycles dating from 1900 to 1970 competed in a staggered-start, individually timed event over a challenging 2.2-mile road course, complete with old-style hay bale chicanes. The course wound through the streets of Coatesville, including a portion that featured the start/finish line and a five-blocklong stretch on the original Lincoln Highway, the oldest highway in America.
