“A Waiting Game” Kinzer Fire Company Members Gather To Make Sauerkraut By Ann Mead Ash
Dwight Groff of the Kinzer Fire Company knows his sauerkraut. After all, he remembers the first pork and sauerkraut dinner the fire company held on New Year’s Day in 1978. The main purpose of gathering fire company members in the fall is to make sauerkraut for that meal, but the fire company has found that some area residents do not want to wait until the new year to taste the company’s kraut. “We make a total of five 30-gallon drums and five 50-gallon drums,” explained Groff. “We sell all the 30-gallon drums and two of the 50-gallon drums to the public.” The sauerkraut is scheduled to be sold at the fire company, See Sauerkraut pg 7

The Upward Basketball League held at Pequea Baptist Church is such a popular activity for youngsters that this season it will be expanded to include eighth-graders for the first time. Upward Basketball is a nationwide program provided through sponsoring churches. Now offered for boys and girls in first through eighth grades, the program at Pequea Baptist strives to teach skills and teamwork in a safe, fun environment. There is also a faith-based component to the league, with time for devotionals worked into practice sessions. “We’re always trying to teach character traits, such as how do you act and how to speak in a way that reflects your faith (while you are at) school,” See Upward Basketball pg 9
Youths like Eliana Walton enjoy playing Upward Basketball at Pequea Baptist Church. This year the program has been expanded to include eighth-graders.

prizes through a random drawing and a silent auction. Chaired by Jimi-Lee Weber and Denise Malone, the arts and crafts show was started six years ago and is a function of the Ovations at Elk View Social Committee. Ovations at Elk View is an active adult community in West Grove for residents age 55 and over. Originally, the vendors selling items for the arts and crafts show were the talented residents of the community, including Malone, who makes aprons, decorative pillows, adult bibs, and children’s bibs, and Weber, who is a basket maker and wood carver. “When we started, it was just residents in the show, but it’s grown,” Malone noted. Volunteers from the Social Committee totally redo the clubhouse for the event. “(Vendors are set up) in every room on the main floor,” Malone said. Project Outreach is a residentsupported group that uses the money to help provide food and clothing to The Bridge Compassionate Ministry Center, run by the Avon Grove Church of the Nazarene in West Grove. Project Outreach also sponsors the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County with a gift card collection in January, Birthright of Chester County with a collection of baby items in February and activities for veterans. Additionally, funds from the upcoming arts and crafts show will enable the Social Committee to purchase children’s winter coats and clothing as well as to assist approximately 10 families in the Avon Grove School District for the holidays. For more information about the arts and crafts show, readers may call 610-874-5113 or email denisemalone928@gmail.com.

“Uncle George’s Suitcase” from pg 1 Nov. 4, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. “It is definitely challenging to be the director. There’s a lot more time involved - I’ve been busy recruiting sound and lighting technicians - and now I’m responsible for all aspects of the play,” Millette remarked. Millette started preparing for the production by reading through the script by Pat Cook an estimated 12 times even before auditions were scheduled. “I’m enjoying (the directorial process),” Millette said. “If you pick the right actors, it comes together on its own.” He noted that the actors were nearly ready to go off-book by the second week in October. “The actors I have are giving life to their characters. I just see it getting better and better by show time,” he added. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” is a comedy drama involving Uncle George Plunkett (Wayne Rhinier) and his family members. The clan patriarch has invited the family to spend a weekend in his rustic cabin,
where he surprises them by reading his will. The biggest surprise, however, is that a suitcase holding $480,000 is apparently hidden somewhere on the property. The family members react with pettiness, slander, and greed before being confronted with their bad behavior, but in a way that Millette hopes audience will find humorous. “It was so much fun to watch my wife read it,” Millette related. “She was laughing until she was crying, just from reading the script. Audiences will be blessed by it.” Promise Players is a Christian theater company, and Millette noted that while this play is not overtly spiritual, it does have a spiritual lesson. “Matthew 6:1921 encapsulates the meaning of the play: It’s important to put your treasures in the eternal, (not on earth where they can be destroyed or stolen).” One of the practical ways to live out that lesson is to show kindness to others. With the proceeds from each production, Promise Players gives a sizeable donation to a nonprofit organization that is doing good in a
way that is related to the respective show. This time, the beneficiary will be the Lancaster-based A Week Away Foundation, which was founded by the late Caleb Walker in order to provide people with life-threatening illnesses a feeling of normalcy and hope. One of the getaway options is to a rural area. Millette pointed out that the play is located in a cabin, and there are some mental health overtones as well. “We think (A Week Away) is doing a great thing,” he remarked. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26; Saturday, Oct. 27; Thursday, Nov. 1; Friday, Nov. 2; and Saturday, Nov. 3. Matinee performances will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 27; Sunday, Oct. 28; Nov. 3; and Nov. 4. Seats may be reserved by visiting www.promiseplayers.org or calling the church at 717-4642050 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Separate donations have been suggested for adults and for children age 12 and under. Free child care will be available for children under age 6.

the deputies braved several inclines, offering each other encouragement in the process. Cpl. Joseph Woulfe, the fitness coordinator who oversees the challenge, said the routine was created by Chief Deputy Sheriff Jason Suydam. Initially, it represented the first step in the application process to join the Fugitive Apprehension Unit before it was opened up to all deputies. Woulfe explained that the test accomplishes more than just an assessment of physical prowess. It also measures teamwork, dedication, and determination, qualities that come in handy when deputies attempt to apprehend fleeing suspects or respond quickly to someone in distress. The instructors - Woulfe, Deputy Sheriff Steven Price, Deputy Sheriff Enrique Garcia, and Cpl. Daniel Strathy - took the test a week earlier so that they could oversee this year’s

Receiving some illumination from a Sheriff ’s Office truck with its lights flashing, the group was in the final stage of the 2018 Superior Fitness Challenge. The challenge began at 5 a.m. with 100 pushups followed by 100 sit-ups. Afterward, the deputies donned 30 pounds of equipment, including large shields, before they each dragged a 150-pound dummy up and down a long hallway, jumped over a 5.5-foot wall, carried a battering ram about a block, and then ascended and descended a nine-story staircase while wearing weighted vests. The ordeal preceded a fiveminute break. By 6:45 a.m., the deputies started the finale, a 2.5mile formation run around the borough of West Chester. As drivers and pedestrians watched,

Come Halloween, youngsters’ attentions are understandably focused on costumes and candy. Their parents, however, are likely more concerned with their children’s safety. Parents should discuss costumes well in advance of Halloween. Many children are so enthusiastic about Halloween that they know which costumes they hope to wear long before Halloween. Parents can discuss potential costumes well in advance of Halloween before children even know what they want to wear. Doing so gives parents a chance to encourage children to choose bright costumes that will make them more visible to drivers on Halloween night. Waiting to discuss costumes increases the likelihood that children will already have an outfit in mind,
making it harder for parents to convince them to choose something safe. Adults should explain that some tailoring might be necessary to make gathering all that candy a lot easier. Superman does not trip on his cape in the movies, and youngsters dressed up as the Man of Steel should not trip on their capes either. It should be explained to children that costumes should be tripproof, so they can seamlessly go from house to house in search of their favorite goodies. Depending on what children will use to carry the candy they accumulate this Halloween, parents can plan a bag or bucket design day a few days in advance. Children will enjoy this chance to get in the Halloween spirit, and parents can encourage youngsters to

decorate their bags and buckets with reflective tape that will make them more visible to drivers. As Halloween approaches, parents can discuss how much fun children will have going door-to-door with many of their friends. This is a good way to ensure children trick-or-treat in large groups, making them
more visible to drivers. In addition, children trick-or-treating in large groups might be too busy joking with their friends to notice when one or two parents tag along as chaperones. Parents can discuss Halloween safety with their children in ways that make it fun to be safe while trick-or-treating.
Trinity AG Moves Family Event To New Location By Francine Fulton
Trinity Assembly of God (AG) will present a free Fall Festival on Friday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center, a nonprofit community center located at 501 E. Miner St., West Chester. The event will include a rock wall and children’s games, a costume contest, inflatables, free food and candy. “We’ve done this for the past five years, but (this will be) the first time in the Melton Center,” stated Trinity AG youth pastor Craig Dunaway. “ We wanted be more in the community and not just at our own place.” He added that moving the Fall Festival to the center will make it more easily accessible to the community. “Usually it was held in the church parking lot,” he said. “Hopefully more families will attend.” He noted that the event will be held outdoors. In the case of rain, activities will take place in the center’s indoor gymnasium. “ We will have a bunch of inflatables, including an inflatable obstacle course and an inflatable moon bounce,” said Dunaway. “We will have lots of carnival-style games where the kids can win tickets. We will have a prize table where they can trade in their tickets for candy and prizes.” Free beverages and snacks, including
cotton candy and popcorn, will be provided. The Fall Festival will include a Halloween costume contest at 8 p.m. A prize for the best overall costume will be awarded that evening. Families that attend the Fall Festival will also be invited to attend Superhero Sunday activities on Oct. 28 during Sunday worship at 10 a.m. “When people come in (to the Fall Festival), they will register and there will be a ‘Guess How Many Candies Are in the Jar’ (contest),” Dunaway said, noting that the winner of the contest will be awarded a prize on Oct. 28. “On Superhero Sunday, kids can dress up as their favorite superheroes or princesses.” As part of the morning, “Superhero Training” activities will be offered for children while adults attend the Sunday service. “We will have a laser maze that kids work their way through and different kinds of superhero games,” Dunaway said. “We will tie that into a (biblical) message.” Dunaway hopes that families will attend both upcoming events. Many drivers are less comfortable driving at night than during the day. However, following several simple steps can help drivers enhance their nighttime visibility and reduce their risk of being in an accident. Daytime running lights can make it easier for drivers to be seen during the day, but they are not designed for nighttime driving. If a driver is struggling to see as evening transitions into nighttime, it is recommended they turn their headlights on earlier, using the car’s automatic switch setting if it has one. Properly maintained headlights can improve driver visibility at night. And such maintenance is simple, yet effective. Drivers should simply check the age and performance of their headlight bulbs. If they are more than three years old and/or dimming, they should be replaced to ensure optimal performance. A recent AAA study discovered that the halogen headlights
found in more than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even when vehicles are moving at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour. By upgrading their headlights, drivers can quickly and effectively put more light on the road. The plastic headlamp lenses found on most vehicles tend to become hazed and yellow over time from the effects of sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and carwash chemicals. Such clouding reduces headlight output and compromises nighttime visibility. Headlight restoration kits can be used to combat clouding on headlights as well as taillights, turn signals, and reflective lens covers, improving driver visibility while also making cars more visible to other drivers. In addition, headlight restoration kits may employ a protective UV coating that produces longer lens clarity while preventing future clouding.

Upward Basketball from pg 1 said Ethann Zimmerman, assistant to organizer Eric Simpson. In order to be sure youngsters are divided into appropriate teams, player evaluations are done to give coaches a chance to assess the players’ skill levels. Evaluations will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, Nov. 13 and 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday and Thursday, Dec. 4 and 6, from 7 to 8 p.m. Registration for Upward Basketball is now open. The registration fee will increase on Saturday, Dec. 1. The participation fee covers the cost of uniforms, officials and facilities. To register, individuals may visit www.upward.org, select Find a Place to Play, enter the Gap ZIP code of 17527 and select Pequea Baptist Church from the list. Players may also register in person by attending one of the evaluation nights. No previous basketball experience is needed. Upward Basketball stresses working on fundamentals while helping each child to develop to the best of his or her ability. “It doesn’t matter what your skill level is; everybody’s there to improve,” Zimmerman said. Teams are divided by age, with teams balanced for the purpose of being equally competitive. Players are rotated on the court so that everyone will receive the same amount of playing time in games. Once formed, teams hold practice sessions on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings, with each team practicing on the same day and time each week beginning on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019. Teams also have a set time for the weekly Saturday morning games at the church gymnasium. The final game of the season will be held Saturday, March 9, 2019. Last season, the league added Upward Rewind, a weekly Facebook video with highlights and commentary. Upward Rewind will be available at www.facebook.com/ FirstBaptistChurchOfPequea. The congregation at Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) in Honey Brook recently welcomed its new pastor, the Rev. Justin Nickel. Nickel is the first permanent pastor that the church has had in several years. The congregation was previously led by a series of interim pastors. “They are a remarkable group of people,” Nickel said of the church members. “In the four years without a steady pastor not only did they survive, they thrived. They were adding members before I got here.” Nickel is a graduate of the University of Colorado and earned a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He is completing his doctoral work at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. He and his wife, Mary, who reside in Thorndale, recently welcomed their son, Max, who is 7 weeks old. Nickel, who was a pastor for three years at a small church in the Denver, Colo., area, learned about LGLC while completing his doctoral work at Princeton. “We really liked it here, and I was interested in the church from the profile I was given at the bishop’s office. In the first interview, we clicked right away,” he recalled. “I think the people at this church really made the difference (in my
choice). They are a kind and open-hearted group of folks.” Nickel explained that in the Lutheran denomination, churches are matched with pastors. “I first had to apply through the synod office, which is out of Philadelphia,” he said, noting that he applied to be pastor this past spring. On Aug. 19, he preached at LGLC and was named the pastor after a congregational vote. For the past several weeks, Nickel has been going out to visit congregation members in their homes. “The most immediate goal is for us to get to know one another,” he said. “I feel (visiting homes) is the best way to get to know people.” He has also visited the Tel Hai Retirement Community, where several congregants reside. Nickel plans to continue the programs already established at the church. “What is great about this place is that if people have an idea, they pursue it,” he said. He noted that the church is currently collecting supplies for Thanksgiving food boxes that will be distributed by Steeple to People. The Sunday service at LGLC, which includes a blend of contemporary and traditional hymns, is held at 9:30 a.m. The pastor’s sermon revolves around the Scriptural reading. “I try and stick close to the assigned readings for the day,” he said. “The

Justin Nickel was recently named the new pastor at Living God Lutheran Church in Honey Brook. goal is that people walk away feeling like they encountered God’s love.” The church will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 28. Bishop Patricia Davenport will preach at the service, which will be followed by a congregational meal. “The slogan back then was ‘A church for people without a church,’” said Nickel. “While we are Lutheran in our theological identity, I think it’s a place that is easy to come to even if you’ve never felt at home in a church.” Nickel noted that the church is a busy place. Country line dancing is offered on Sunday nights, and the church maintains a walking trail, which is popular with
area residents. The church is also a meeting place for Alcoholics Anonymous. The new pastor encourages people to attend a Sunday service to see first-hand what the church has to offer. “A lot of people know us as the church with the walking trail,” he said. “We would love to invite the people who walk on the trail to come worship with us. Everyone is welcome. (The congregation members) are the friendliest group of people.” LGLC is located at 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Military Decorations Website Launched Coastal Cleanup Help Requested Registration is open for the 2018 Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful invites Pennsylvania residents, civic organizations, and businesses to coordinate a cleanup or join an existing cleanup as part of the 2018 ICC. All cleanup sites, land or water, are eligible. A significant portion of waterway pollution originates on land. When it rains, trash on sidewalks and streets accumulates in the gutter and is swept into storm drains. Most storm drain systems discharge directly into the nearest creek or river, eventually flowing to the ocean taking all the trash with it. The International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest volunteer effort to improve the health of the oceans. International Coastal Cleanup Day was held on Sept. 19, however, ICC events can be held through Wednesday, Oct. 31. Gloves and bags are available for registered events while supplies last. For questions regarding the ICC, readers may contact
