Imbierowicz Foundation donates CO detectors BY FRANCINE FULTON

Members of the Imbierowicz family recently presented 30 carbon monoxide detectors to the Cochranville Fire Company on behalf of the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation. The donation was part of the family’s ongoing effort to warn the public about the danger of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

The Carly Imbierowicz Foundation is named for the daughter of Donna and Matt Imbierowicz, who passed away at the age of 16 on Nov. 22, 2014, along with her friend Daulton Pointek, 17. They died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the vehicle they drove on the way home from a movie. A broken exhaust pipe allowed deadly carbon monoxide gas to enter the car through the See Imbierowicz Foundation pg 6

Hall of Fame Inductees are Michael Gill (left), Lt. Col. Joshua Tyson (right) and Andy Gregg (not pictured). Accepting Gregg’s award on his behalf was Lisa Rudisill (center).

Stories of success Three graduates inducted into Octorara Hall of Fame

ll three inductees into this year’s Octorara Hall of Fame have achieved success in their respective careers. Lt. Col. Joshua Tyson, Class of 1991, is a decorated member of the United States Marine Corps; Andy Gregg, Class of 1993, has built a successful career with the NFL Network; and Michael Gill, Class of 1975, is a Broadway producer. The three new members were inducted into the Octorara Hall of Fame on Oct. 6 during a ceremony held at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. After a welcome provided by senior class president Sarah Meyer, Octorara students read biographies of each of the inductees. Introducing Tyson was Lyla Elboubkri, who noted that he has served in various military operations

“Each and every one of you here today can forge your own path in life.” nominated for the Hall of Fame by Octorara alumna Raeleen Mills. Tyson’s advice for students was threefold - to be persistent, determined and kind. He also encouraged the students to take advantage of the opportunities offered at Octorara. “This school is the standard of which I judge other schools,” he said. “This is a great (learning) opportunity for you. Having knowledge is one

thing. Having the desire to learn is something completely different.” Gregg, who was introduced by student Carrie Beecher, was unable to attend the event since he had to fly to London for an NFL football game. Instead, he sent the students a video message. Gregg talked about taking a chance in life and moving to Los Angeles, where he got a job working on the sitcom “Malcolm & Eddie.” Later, he worked as a writer for WWE and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Today, he is the senior coordinating producer at the NFL Network. “I oversee a lot of our shows, including our Sunday morning pregame show. I produced the NFL draft in Philadelphia in 2017,” he said noting that he has produced pregame and post-game shows for the NFL championship game. “The biggest thing for me was I finally found something that I was passionate about.”

Participants in the donation presentation were (from left) Andrew Imbierowicz, Judah Kocher, Donna Imbierowicz with Foxy and Doug Lapp.

WordUP Ministries to present Trunk Or Treat

OCTORARA EDITION

BY FRANCINE FULTON

WordUP Community Ministries will again present a Trunk or Treat event, rain or shine, on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. Dinner will be available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m., and then children will be able to visit decorated cars to gather Halloween candy from 6 to 8 p.m. During Trunk or Treat, which aims to offer a safe alternative to trick-or-treating door to door, children can travel from vehicle to vehicle collecting candy and treats. Children are encouraged to dress in costume, and attendees should bring their own bags for collecting candy. Dogs on leashes will also be welcome; some cars may even provide pet treats. The D&Bz food truck will be on-site starting at 5 p.m. Food items that will be offered include cheeseburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking tacos and beverages. “Tables will be set up so people can come and eat with their families,” said WordUP pastor Buck Mowday. “We encourage them to get supper.” Only cash will be accepted for food purchases. Octorara alumna Lisa Rudisill, who nominated him for the Hall of Fame, accepted Gregg’s award on his behalf. Chloe Badman introduced Gill, who has produced 16 shows on Broadway, including “The Phantom of the Opera.” He was nominated for the Hall of Fame by Octorara alumnus Norman Pine. “This is where I fell in love with live stage shows - right here at Octorara,” Gill said.

“I knew that I wanted to work on the backstage side of theater.” He talked about forming a student-run drama program at Syracuse University. He later worked on the stage crew at the Valley Forge Music Fair, which has since been torn down, where he became the stage manager. Later, he moved to New York City, where he began his Broadway career. “A kid from Octorara made

it to Broadway,” he said. “I got there slowly through connections and through passion. I believe that anyone here can follow their passions. Each and every one of you here today can forge your own path in life.” Closing remarks were provided by Jonathan Propper, principal. The Octorara chorale was also on hand at the event to sing the school’s alma mater and “The StarSpangled Banner.”

There is no fee for vehicle owners, but they will be required to supply the candy. People interested in participating and handing out candy may call or text 717-330-0561 to reserve a spot. “We have plenty of room,” said Mowday, noting that registrations will be taken up to the day of the event. He noted that the first year the church hosted Trunk or Treat, activities were moved indoors because of rain. “The first year we had 300 kids come through, and we had 20 tables set up that year,” he said, adding that there is a goal to have additional vehicles featured this year. said Cate Westbrook, the administrator of the Daily Parkesburg Facebook group, when describing her idea to create a neighborhood map of Halloween displays. “It’s fun to see people get excited about a holiday and decorating.” Westbrook announced the idea to create the map on the Facebook page and invited local residents who have Halloween displays at their homes to provide their addresses. She received assistance from Chuck Walcott, a page moderator. The current map that Westbrook has created, which can be found on the Facebook

page, features Haloween display locations that are highlighted in yellow. As more people provide their addresses, she will update the map as Halloween approaches. “There are two (sites) on Sixth Avenue, one on Woodland Avenue outside the Borough, one on Second Street and one on East Second. I will update the map to add more people,” noted Westbrook. “The goal is to get people excited about it and want to participate.” She likened the idea to when families drive around their local neighborhoods to view Christmas lights. “There See “Halloween map” pg 6

A positive experience BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Philip Long remembers the 15 months he spent at Christ’s Home for Children, located at 3182 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, he recalls a “peaceful and stable period of time.” In fact, he said he has virtually no bad memories of the time he lived there with his siblings in 1974 and 1975. Although Long’s memories of being brought to the home by his parents are traumatic, his experience at the home was such that when it was time to leave with his parents, he hid in a closet. “I did not want to go,” recalled Long. “I didn’t hate my parents, but it felt better being (at Christ’s Home).” Founded in 1903, Christ’s Home for Children works to provide services to children in need with a focus on love, dignity, compassion, and respect. On Sept. 21, the organization held a CEO Update Breakfast at the Eden Resort & Suites in Lancaster. The development team, which included vice president of corporate operation George Zauflik, director of development Brenda Greene, and executive administrative assistant Amy Trowbridge, was joined by a number of supporters. During the breakfast, Christ’s Home CEO John Bryant discussed the rich his-

representatives of the nonprofits joined in helping to build their scarecrows at that meeting. Horn instructed the nonprofits to create a unique way to track funds. The Village shop representatives chose the nonprofits they represented and first met in July to get started on the scarecrows. “We had a second work night on Sept. 11,” said Horn, who noted that

This is not the first year that Kitchen Kettle Village has held a scarecrow contest, but it is the first year that visitors to the Village voted on the winners and area nonprofit organizations raised more than $10,000 based on those votes. The competition, which was held from Sept. 13 through Sept. 23, helped 16 area nonprofits to raise funds. Visitors to the Village voted for their favorite scarecrow and nonprofit by donating funds. The organization that raised the most was the winner and received a $1,000 match. The Olive Basin created the scarecrow for the Lancaster Food Hub, which raised more than $4,000 and received the match for a total of $5,000. Other local nonprofits that raised funds included Lancaster Farmland Trust, which raised more than $1,400; Anchor Lancaster, which brought in more than $1,300; and Lancaster Cleft Palate,

which raised over $1,100. Organizations that took part also include Treetops Kitty Café, Intercourse Fire Company, Music For Everyone, Wounded Warriors, Lancaster Conservancy, Christ’s Home, Girls on the Run, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, The Factory Ministries, Pet Pantry of Lancaster, and Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. Lisa Horn, director of fun for the Village, said that earlier this year a member of the Smile Squad, a group of employees that creates fun events for employees and guests, suggested this year’s scarecrow competition involve nonprofit organizations. The idea was based on the recent rebranding of the Village Pretzel House to Mom’s Pretzels - a missionsbased business that gives all profits back to the local community. Each month, the shop partners with a local organization, and funds go to that nonprofit. Since the shop is

The family bred Malachi in memory of Carly, nicknaming Malachi’s 11 puppies as CO Awareness Angels. Those who adopted the dogs agreed to share Carly’s story. “Doing things like this helps with my grief,” said Donna, noting the family has also established a website, www.cmiawareness.org. “The CMI stands for Carly Marie Imbierowicz. (The website provides) carbon monoxide information and promotes awareness.” According to the website, carbon monoxide is a “silent killer” because it is colorless, odorless and tasteless and cannot be detected by humans without the help of an alarm or detector. People are asked to take precautions against CO poisoning by installing carbon monoxide detectors along with smoke detectors in their homes and checking the batteries in the spring and fall. Homeowners should also have their home heating systems inspected regularly by a certified professional. In addition, vehicle owners should make a habit of opening the garage door before starting their cars, and they should never leave a car running with the garage door closed. Tips for preventing carbon monoxide poisoning in vehicles include maintaining the car’s exhaust system and mufflers, partially opening a window if sitting for a long time in an idling vehicle and installing a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector in the vehicle. library.org. The Read Moore Book Store is located in the lower level of the library, which also houses a community room. The featured books on sale come from community donations and the library’s collection. Volunteers with the Friends group maintain and run the store, which raises funds for library programming. The library and bookstore opened in 2013 in the former Wachovia bank building after moving from a location on Bridge Street, across from the Christiana Lions Club building. Books in the store are displayed on unique shelving inside a canoe and the frame of a baby grand piano. There is also a young adult section featuring books displayed on skateboards and bookshelves made from rain gutters, which were repurposed by Friends member Janice Crills. Since the library’s building once was home to a bank, shoppers can find rare and unique books in the “vault.”

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office has warned residents about phone scams involving false fines for failure to report to jury duty or other court appointments. The Sheriff ’s Office has received numerous calls noting that the fraudulent calls seeking money are very convincing. For some, the caller ID shows Chester County Sheriff’s Office. In addition, scammers may use the name of a current Chester County judge and names of current or former sheriff deputies. Fraudsters may demand gift cards or urgent special bank transfers, claiming that the recipient was required to show up for jury duty, a meeting or a conference. Callers deliver ultimatums, including imminent arrest or loss of property for lack of immediate payment. One individual lost $5,000 by responding to a false claim of missing a bail conference. Chester County detectives are investigating. The Chester County Sheriff’s Office will never call and request immediate gift card payments or cash transfers for missing jury duty or other similar fines. If someone receives such a request by phone, he or she should hang up. If a community member is unsure about the legitimacy of a call requesting immediate payment or fine, he or she should call local law enforcement or the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office at 610-344-6850.
