Octorara Students Take Part In PTO Fun(d) Walk BY FRANCINE FULTON

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade in the Octorara Area School District took part in the Octorara Parent-Teacher Organization’s annual PTO Fun(d) Walk on Oct. 1 to raise money for their schools. Students from the Octorara Primary Learning Center and the Octorara Elementary School

completed the walk at the Octorara Junior-Senior High School track, while Octorara Intermediate School students walked the track at their own school building. “This is our fifth time running the event; we did not do it last year because of COVID,” noted PTO treasurer Joe Lynch, a music teacher at the Octorara Primary Learning Center and the high school musical director. Freedom Life Church To Host Fall Festival ayrides, bounce houses, children’s games and more will be featured during a Fall Festival at Freedom Life Church in Christiana on Saturday, Oct. 30. Hosted by the FL Kids team, the event will include activities for children in fifth grade and younger, and families may stop by anytime between 4 and 5:30 p.m. This year’s event is an expansion of last year, when the church hosted a socially distanced Trunk or Treat event. “Last year, it was more for the families of the church because of COVID,” said Gina Turk, FL Kids director. “This is a Fall Festival with different activities. It will be very relaxed.” Activities will take place outdoors in the church’s multi-tiered front parking lot. “There will be horse and pony rides, a hayride, face painting, (temporary) tattoos, balloons and a Trunk or Treat,” said Turk. Concessions will feature snacks, including popcorn, cotton candy, pretzels and water.

She said that children are never too young to learn important life lessons. “You are teaching them values and truths no matter how young,” Turk shared. “These are the world changers. If you teach them well, they will do great things.” FL Kids members and their parents will help run the Fall Festival. In addition to being a fun family event, the Fall Festival will also provide an opportunity for community members to meet new people and to learn about the church. “Stop in and have some fun with the kids. If you don’t have a church, check us out,” Turk added. “(We want people to know) that they have a place to feel loved.” Freedom Life Church is located at 447 Noble Road, Christiana. Admission to the Fall Festival is free, but preregistration is encouraged. Visit www.freedom.life/upcoming-events to register. For more information, email flkids@freedom.life or call 610-593-5959. More information and a link to register for the event are also available by visiting www.facebook.com/freedomlife.tv and choosing Events.

According to Dan Steinman, Handi-Vangelism BASIS ministry assistant, the Help for People in Pain seminar given by Tim and Kathy Sheetz addresses any loss that significantly affects a person’s life and outlook. “It’s for people with different types of losses,” Steinman said. “Not necessarily the loss of a spouse or a child. It could be the loss of a job … a divorce or bankruptcy … a (difficult) diagnosis.”

The event will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, most activities will be moved indoors, but the animal rides will not be offered. FL Kids is one of the programs for youths offered at Freedom Life Church, which is led by pastor Sam Masteller and his wife, Michele. FL Kids offers programs for infants, preschoolers and elementary school students. “FL Kids is for children from birth through fifth grade,” explained Turk. “My team and I are all about teaching children at their level about how much God loves them. On Sunday, they experience at their level what it means to worship God.” FL Kids meets during Sunday services, which are held at 9 and 11 a.m. “When they are dropped off, we start with a game that goes with the lesson they are learning. We have music, worship and we pray,” said Turk. “We do our Bible verse and do our lesson again - reinforcing it through a craft - and then we have a closing activity where they do another game.”

After creating two outdoor classrooms for students and teachers to use at Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) in West Brandywine, Lizzie Heinz has now created a Rosary Walk at the school as her Eagle Scout service project. The walk features a path where students may pray the Rosary outdoors by following a series of signs that depict the Mysteries of the Rosary, which are important moments in the life of Jesus Christ and his mother, Mary. The Rosary Walk was dedicated on Oct. 17 by the Rev. Michael Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Peter Parish, who blessed each sign on the walk with Holy Water. He also led those attendance in several prayers and provided a blessing: “God bless (Lizzie) and those who use this symbol of prayer and of the Blessed Mother.”

The Rev. Michael Fitzpatrick (right) blessed each sign on the Rosary Walk, which was created by Lizzie Heinz, with Holy Water.

The Rosary consists of beads in groups of 10 (decades), and people recite the Hail Mary while holding each small bead. On the larger beads separating the decades, different prayers are said, and there are particular Mysteries associated with each decade. Currently, the Mysteries depicted on the signs at PJP II are from the Joyful Mysteries, and the signs include images of the Nativity and the Presentation, when Jesus was taken to the temple. Other mysteries are the Glorious Mysteries, which include the Assumption of Mary into heaven, and the Luminous Mysteries, which include events such as Christ’s baptism. Lizzie noted that the boxes were constructed so that photos from each of the Mysteries

Fall

could be interchanged. The Rosary Walk also includes an introductory sign and a prayer box at the end. “The kids can write or draw on a piece of paper what they want to pray for,” Lizzie said. In addition, Lizzie created a pamphlet that explains the Mysteries and presented each PJP II student with his or her own Rosary to use on the Rosary Walk. Lizzie is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 611, which meets at Hibernia United Methodist Church. She previously completed the outdoor classrooms to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. “They allowed girls to join (Boy Scouts, now Scouts BSA) a few years ago and just last year I found a troop that I wanted to join,” she explained. “When I did the

outdoor classroom, Mrs. (Patricia) Tarquinio, the vice principal, mentioned that if I had any more projects that I wanted to do, she had things that I could do.” Lizzie completed the project with the help of family members and fellow Scouts. “The (photos) were specially printed for this and we cut the wood, sanded it and put (the signs) together,” she said, noting the lumber was donated by Home Depot in Parkesburg. She wanted the project to be dedicated in October, which is traditionally observed by Catholics as the Month of the Holy Rosary. Lizzie is currently working on the final paperwork for her project and plans to have her Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony in December.

Through a collaboration with Chester County Hospital, this October the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office’s (CCSO) patrol cars are accessorizing with pink ribbons in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The goal is to raise awareness that leads to education, encourage

those facing the disease, honor those who survived it, and remember loved ones who succumbed to it. The idea for placing pink ribbon magnets on CCSO’s cars that travel throughout Chester County came from Cpl. Steve Vitale, who lost his wife, Ann Marie, to breast cancer.

Lenhart concurred, saying, “Pastors, ministry leaders who deal with loss, chaplains for retirement communities and hospitals … anyone who is around people experiencing grief and loss would benefit from attending this seminar. I think they will get valuable tools.” He added that he is looking forward to what he will learn. There is a cost to attend the seminar, which will include a book and lunch at both locations for those who register at https://calvarymonument.org /journey-through-grief by Monday, Nov. 1. In-person registration on the day of the seminar may be completed at either church, but a book and lunch will not be guaranteed. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

different activities were held during the walk to keep the students motivated, and music was played over the PA system. “We had a monster walk, a moon walk lap, a freeze dance lap and a walk and sit lap. The younger grades did a ‘Baby Shark’ lap,” noted Lynch. “We tried to make each lap a little different and changed the style so the kids could be entertained while they walked.” To raise money, students asked friends and family members to pledge or donate money to support the effort, with each student having an online donation account. The goal of the walk was to raise $20,000. As of Oct. 19, more than $17,000 had been raised. Collecting for the fundraiser was scheduled to end on Oct. 22. When the money is totaled, the overall highest earner will win a $100 Amazon gift card and the top earner from each grade will win a $20 Amazon gift card. There will also be a pretzel party for the classroom from each grade that raises the most money. All proceeds will be donated to the PTO, which supports the teachers and students by raising money to help with classroom and school needs. The PTO provides support for field trips, transportation, assemblies, books, yearbooks and classroom magazines, and it has helped to purchase playground equipment. Last year, the PTO provided each Octorara student with a lanyard. This year’s gift was an Octorara Braves water bottle.

Leaders of Chester County’s first responder community and the county commissioners joined the family of firefighter George Parry on Sept. 15 for a memorial ceremony to honor Parry, the Goshen Fire Company assistant fire chief who died in the line of duty on Oct. 29, 1955. In addition to laying the memorial hero plaque for Parry, the event included the rededication of memorial hero plaques previously dedicated to 11 other Chester County law enforcement officers and firefighters who died in the line of duty. The 12 hero plaques reside in a special memorial garden located at the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus in South Coatesville.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) administers a Blind Veterans Pension program to help veterans who experience service-connected blindness. The program provides eligible Pennsylvania veterans with a $150 per month pension. Any veteran with service-connected blindness may apply for this benefit. Eligibility criteria to receive the pension includes a veteran who served in the military honorably, was a resident of Pennsylvania upon entering the military, and experienced a serviceconnected injury or contracted a disease that resulted in loss of vision. To start the application process, veterans are advised to contact the county veterans affairs director in the county where they reside. To speed up the application process, veterans should have several items of documentation ready when they apply. These include a copy of their DD214 for their most recent military service, proof of Pennsylvania residency upon entering the military, and a United States Department of Veterans Affairs disability claim number. To learn more about the Blind Veterans Pension program, including eligibility, visit www.dmva.pa.gov and select Veterans Affairs and then Blind Veterans Pension.

Jack-o’-lanterns are one of many classic symbols of Halloween. A refresher course on carving one can help those who have not dusted off their carving skills since last fall. A few simple tips can help Halloween celebrants ensure their jack-o’-lanterns are in tip-top shape on the big day at the end of October. Horticulturists indicate that jack-o’-lanterns have a shelf life of roughly five to 10 days, though an especially cold October could shorten that life expectancy even further. Jack-o’-lanterns intended to greet trick-or-treaters on Halloween should be carved a few days before the big day. The design should be outlined onto the pumpkin using

a dry-erase marker before making a cut. It is easy to make mistakes when carving a jack-o’-lantern, especially if it is one’s first time using a carving knife since last year. Carvers should avoid severing the stem. When many people envision jack-o’-lanterns, the image in their minds is one in which the top of the pumpkin is removed so candles or lights can be easily placed inside. However, the custom pumpkin carving experts at New York-based Maniac Pumpkin Carvers note that removing the top cuts off the vine, which supplies the pumpkin with nutrients and moisture, even after it has been cut. A hole in the back of the pumpkin can provide easy access when placing candles or lights inside and cutting there will not cut off the nutrient and moisture supply a pumpkin needs to avoid drying out. Everything should be

scooped out. The interior of a pumpkin will be loaded with seeds, which can be removed and later roasted to make a savory snack. In addition to removing the seeds, all the pulp should be scooped out. Pulp left in the pumpkin will soon get moldy, and that can shorten the lifespan of the jack-o’-lantern. In addition, when removing the interior, individuals should try to scrape the front inner wall of the pumpkin thin, which may make it easier to carve. Candles should be avoided when lighting the interior of the jack-o’-lantern. Candles might seem like the most authentic and spooky way to light the interior of the pumpkin, but the heat produced by a burning candle can shorten the life expectancy of the jack-o’-lantern. An LED light does not give off much heat and will provide ample illumination.
