EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA BY WENDY ROYAL

According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure loca-

tions more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers See EXPLORE pg 5

Thanks to Chesco Pet Search volunteers, a golden retriever named Val was reunited with his owner, Taryn Fritz Walpole, after escaping from the family car in Parkesburg.

Reuniting Lost Pets With Their Owners BY FRANCINE FULTON

elping reunite people with their lost dogs and cats is the goal of Chesco Pet Search, an all-volunteer group of lost pet recovery specialists who operate throughout Chester County. Founded by Cathy HermanHarsch about five years ago, the group has developed specific techniques to find lost pets after they have gone missing. When a dog is lost, for example, Herman-Harsch advises pet owners to not follow their first instinct to try and chase down the dog in the neighborhood. Instead, a person with a missing dog should take several immediate steps, including posting information on Facebook and other social media sites, putting out water or food in the last known place the dog was seen and contacting the local SPCA. “We are not looking for the dog per se. We lure dogs to us, she

“You learn a lot by experience. Every (lost) dog teaches us something, said Herman-Harsch. Herman-Harsch explained that dogs that escape from the house, a car or even a fenced-in yard generally run so far and then become afraid and often circle back to where they started. “You learn a lot by experience. Every (lost) dog teaches us something, said Herman-Harsch. “I own a

professional pet care business and I am in my 18th year of that, so you learn to understand their behavior. Social media and the internet have been particularly helpful in finding lost pets, including websites such as www.petfinder.com and the “Lost and Found Pets in Chester County PA Facebook group. “We have several lost and found groups we post to, she said. “Each community has their own forum, and we will post to those in the area as well. Chesco Pet Search has many success stories. Most recently, a golden retriever named Val, who was running loose at the Parkesburg Wawa, was reunited with his owner, Taryn Fritz Walpole, who lives in Virginia with her husband, Jeff. They adopted Val from a farm in Lancaster and s t o p p e d a t Wa w a o n t h e w a y home when the dog jumped out of their car. See Pet Search pg 4

Trick-Or-Treating With Safety In Mind BY FRANCINE FULTON

Trick-or-treating can be safe in 2020, provided that parents and children take some precautions to ensure their well-being. Local communities, including the boroughs of Parkesburg, Atglen and Christiana, have all designated treat-or-treating hours on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. It is suggested that local residents who do not want to participate should turn off their front house lights. Those who want children to visit are asked to keep their front porch lights on. Trick-or-treaters See Trick-Or-Treating pg 6

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta.

ONE LITTLE FLU SHOT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle,

Pauline H. Engle

EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir

and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Piercing Word Inc. will perform “The One Story” on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 10:45 a.m. at WordUP Community Church, located in the Dutchland Corporate Center, 160 Route 41, Gap. The event is open to the community. Piercing Word is a nonprofit Christian ministry based in Lancaster which performs scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word-for-word from the ESV Bible, with the tagline of “The Scripture is Our Script.” In “The One Story,” the sixperson cast tells the entire story of the Bible and is accompanied by original orchestrations that underscore key themes throughout the production. The piece revolves around Jesus’ conversation on the Emmaus road, where he explains how all of Scripture points to Himself. With Jesus serving as the main narrator, audiences will witness Bible stories told from the perspective of the resurrected Christ. Piercing Word has been performing Scripture across the country since 2007. The mission of Piercing Word is to “ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” The group challenges everyone to memorize the Word of God for themselves and then equips them to do so through memorization workshops and discipleship programs. Thanks to a tip from a local resident who saw the dog about a half-mile west of Wawa, Val was rescued by Chesco Pet Search volunteers Kara Mast and April Kenworthy-Brade. “After we got him home, I sat on my kitchen floor with him for two hours as he decompressed and Taryn drove up from Arlington,” said Kenworthy-Brade, noting that Val is now home with his new family and is doing very well. Chesco Pet Search is always looking for volunteers. “We get lost dogs all over from one end of Chester County to another, and a lot of times we can’t cover it all,” noted Her-

They do not include a shade, but there is a component attached, called a harp, which can hold a shade. “(We determined that) whoever buys them would want to pick out his or her own shade,”

said library director Tom Knecht. “They are similar, but (each) is etched with a different design.” Parkesburg resident Cathy Wilde Christ, who owns and is knowledgeable about the Parkesburg Lamps, explained that Paul Thomas, a former truck driver, came to Parkesburg in 1934 with the idea of opening up a business in an old Parkesburg Iron Company building located at the corner of First Avenue and Brandt Street. Today that location is the parking lot of Planet Fitness. Thomas named his business Thomas Glass Works. He sold and produced lamps, vases, candelabras, paperweights, inkwells and glassware. His lamps were etched with different designs and came in different-colored glass, including cranberry, green, clear, blue, amber and amethyst. According to a written history of the lamps provided by

should respect the decisions of their neighbors and refrain from knocking on front doors or ringing doorbells where the lights are off. In a statement issued by Parkesburg Borough, additional guidelines were offered. Trick-or-treating in large residential developments and apartment complexes is discouraged; homeowners should be creative when devising safe ways to pass out candy; trick-ortreaters should walk in smaller groups, with no more than 10 youths and chaperones; and participants should practice social distancing and wear face coverings. Nemours Children’s Health System offers additional safety suggestions. Most importantly, there should not be a communal candy bowl where children reach in and take out candy. Rather, it is suggested that homeowners set up a table in their driveway or at the end of their yard and have children pick up their treats there. Or people may make small pre-wrapped goodie bags and encourage trick-ortreaters to each take one. Those who put up a table may also offer hand sanitizer. Face coverings, not Halloween masks, are suggested, and children should reduce the number of homes where they trick-or-treat. Those who have had

COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should not participate in in-person Halloween festivities and should not give out candy to trick-or-treaters. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests alternative low-risk activities. These include carving pumpkins and decorating the home with family members, hosting a virtual Halloween costume contest or enjoying a Halloween movie night with family members. Another suggestion is to host a scavenger hunt-style trick-or-treat search with household members in or around the home rather than going house to house. Outdoor activities that are moderately safe, according to the CDC, include attending outdoor costume parties where people remain 6 feet apart, walking through a haunted attraction wearing a face covering, visiting outdoor pumpkin patches and having an outdoor Halloween movie night with family and friends who are socially distanced. For a complete list of Halloween safety precautions suggested by the CDC, readers may visit www.cdc.gov, click on “Learn More abut COVID19” and scroll down to “COVID-19 and Halloween.”

Oct. 17. Groff explained that, once emptied, the pods are used as temporary housing for volunteer workers who are helping with relief projects. Groff noted that this year tropical storms and hurricanes, which included Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta, have been particularly devastating. “Delta was 15 miles from the first one,” Groff said. “Those people were rebuilding, and when (Delta) hit, they lost what (progress they had made). They definitely need help and supplies.” The Christiana Lions Club community building /clubhouse is located at 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. Local Author Shares His Faith Journey In New Book “My goal was to share my faith and help others with theirs,” stated Jim Weagley when explaining why he decided to write his newly released book, “Bet on the Turtle (My Long, Slow Journey of Faith).” “I really believe that at some point everyone wrestles with faith. Everyone - just by our nature - wants answers about why we are

here, what we do with the time we have and what comes after this.” Weagley, a resident of Atglen and a first-time author, describes the book as a memoir and statement of faith. “I was raised in a devout Catholic family and was blessed to experience a wonderful childhood. Sadly, when I was 14, my father suffered a Jim Weagley, a first-time author, recently brain aneurysm, resulting in a announced the release of his new book, “Bet on disability,” he said. “We were the Turtle (My Long, Slow Journey of Faith).” angry at God and could not understand how He could have let this happen to our family. Unfortunately, we turned away from our faith and the church community. With the help of friends, the benefit of numerous trials and tribulations and the grace of God, I managed to rediscover my faith.” Weagley, whose background is in sports medicine, said he never expected to write a book but felt compelled to do so after retirement. “When I retired, I knew I had more time; I prayed and it came back loud and clear that is what I need to be doing,” said Weagley. “(Until recently), I thought reading and writing were a necessary evil. I now enjoy reading, and writing was very therapeutic, and I was very happy I did it, but it was nothing I planned to do.”

In the first part of the book, Weagley talks about his childhood memories in a Christian school and his church experiences, as well as his father’s injury and its impact on the family. In the second part of the book, “Reason to Believe,” Weagley, who describes himself as a very cynical person, shares scientific, historical and biblical evidence to support his belief in God. “Obviously, the first part of the book is my story that I wanted to share, so it wasn’t difficult to do,” he noted. “The other part is where I took a step back and thought about what were the most compelling reasons for someone to believe and what worked for me. I thought I needed to be thorough and objective. I read a lot of books and referenced the Bible and spoke to a lot of people.” “I think the second part is as interesting as the first, even more so. It is more practical, and I keep a conversational approach to it,” he said, adding, “The chapters are not long, so it’s an easy read.” Weagley, who attends Mission Church in Lancaster, started writing the book in December 2018 and finished it in May 2019. His book was published after several rejections. “I (found) someone willing to take a chance on a first-time author. I feel very fortunate,” he shared. For more information about Weagley and the book, readers may visit www.faith nwellness.com. A portion of the proceeds from book sales will benefit the Parkesburg POINT youth center, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Compassion International and the Mennonite Central Committee Disaster Relief Fund. Those struggling with faith issues also invited to email Weagley with their questions at faithnwellness@comcast.net.

Amidst all the changes this year, at least one event has stayed the same. Mostly. “The big difference is we’re offering curbside unloading. There’s no need to exit their vehicle,” said Dan Henry, speaking about the Operation Christmas Child collection event that will be held from Monday, Nov. 16, to Monday, Nov. 23, at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville. This is the congregation’s 12th year as a collection site. Each year, church and community members have typically dropped off about 2,000 shoebox-type containers filled with gifts of toys and hygiene items for children. “That’s over 20,000 boxes,” Henry

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

County Observes Fire Prevention Week Chester County recently recognized Fire Prevention Week, noting no deaths due to fire in 2019. Chester County commissioners joined other local, county, state, and federal officials in signing a proclamation recognizing Fire Prevention Week 2020 from Oct. 4 to 10. Fire Prevention Week is dedicated to emphasizing the importance of fire prevention and safety, as well as recognizing the fire service’s contributions to public safety. The commissioners’ proclamation highlighted that there were no firerelated deaths in Chester County in 2019, but it noted the devastation caused by fire in Chester County in 2019, including 44 civilians who experienced injury from fire and property damage that totaled in excess of $44 million.

Fire Prevention Week is a public safety campaign that has existed for over 90 years, sustained by millions of firefighters across the United States who work to reach the citizens they serve with fire safety messages. In Chester County, the majority of firefighters are volunteers. The year 2019 was the first year in at least 30 years that Chester County reported zero fire deaths, according to John Weer, the county’s chief fire marshal. This year’s national Fire Prevention Week theme, “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen,” reminded everyone to practice fire safety, especially in the kitchen. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association which sponsors Fire Prevention Week.
