Nicholas Madrigale of Atglen is facing one of life’s most difficult challenges. The 31-year-old father of four is in need of a heart transplant.
And, while waiting for the call that a heart is available, Madrigale is maintaining a positive outlook and encouraging others facing dire
situations to do the same.
“I want to help others who face similar adversities continue to remain positive and stand tall,” he said. “When things happen that are bad and get us down, it is not the end. There is always a way. Sometimes you have to search for the positive, but that is what I do to maintain.”

Members of the Christiana Lions Club joined Lions Club members from throughout Pennsylvania to send supplies to flood victims in eastern Kentucky.
Working with Lions Club district governors in that area, the Christiana club was able to put together a list of needed items such as generators and dehumidifiers. Along with donations, additional items were purchased at a discount from Lowe’s of Morgantown.
On Oct. 21, a Pennsylvania Lions tractor-trailer was loaded with supplies at Lowe’s by store employees, including Jes Henderson, assistant store manager of operations, who drove the forklift. Lions club members who provide assistance were Dale High from the Intercourse Lions Club, Dick Sware from the Willow Street Lions Club, Paul Shrom from the Christiana Lions Club and Mike Schaeffer from the Millersville Lions Club.
On the same day, a second tractor-trailer was loaded with supplies at Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.
“The tractor-trailer from Morgantown went to Vision Resources, and we finished loading it up with supplies coming in from all over the state. We had 40 skids of items on those two tractor-trailers,” reported Christiana Lions Club member Jim Groff, Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator. “They left over the weekend and arrived in Kentucky on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23).”
Items collected included box fans, hoses and buckets, grills and charcoal for cooking, tarps, water cans for fresh water, flashlights, electrical cords, hand warmers and blankets.
“I got a list from the Lions from Kentucky of what they required. I only sent what they needed, which makes it more efficient,” said Groff.
“The Lions in Kentucky are the best Lions I have ever worked with in all the years I have been in disaster services. They are very organized. I am so proud of them.”
The Lions held a similar drive in January for the victims of the tornado in Kentucky, and Lowe’s was once again the spot where the tractor-trailer was loaded. “In January of this year, we, the Pennsylvania Lions, gave a total in value of $300,000 (worth of supplies),” said Groff.
Groff and the Lions have a long history of helping with disaster relief not only by collecting donations but working in the affected areas. Groff has traveled to help tornado-devastated Joplin, Mo., as well as New Jersey and New York towns hit by Hurricane Sandy. “With boots on the ground you see what it’s all about,” said Groff.
He said the efforts are in keeping with the Lions Club motto of “We Serve.” “Lions have a heart and passion to help people,” Groff noted. “It is teamwork - people working together to help people in need.”

Madrigale was born with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and it wasn’t until the age of 5 when he was diagnosed after his heart stopped three times before he was resuscitated. He was placed on several heart medications, and when he was 8 years old, he was fitted with his first pacemaker/defibrillator.
In May of 2021, he contracted pneumonia and was diagnosed with chronic heart failure. Currently, he has a PICC line where he receives medication through an IV.
“I am officially on the (heart donor) list. I am a Status 4,” he explained. “That is described as someone who can be an outpatient with a PICC line and an IV pump that runs 24/7. I change the IV daily and I have a nurse who comes out once week to clean the dressing of where the PICC line enters the body.”
Madrigale expects that he will soon move to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to wait for a new heart, at which point he will move up on the transplant list to a Status 3. “I am on the highest dose of medicine you can have as an outpatient. They are about to bring me into the hospital, and I will wait from there,” he said, noting that the wait for the new heart could take several months. “I am preparing to stay in the
hospital for a while.”
Madrigale said that while he is used to living with heart disease, he is looking forward to having his procedure and living with a new heart. “Once it happens and once it goes through, I’ll be able to do more than I ever did before,” he said. “I focus on what’s next.”
The community has supported the family with several fundraisers, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help Madrigale pay for medical bills since he is no longer able to work.
He encourages people to contact him on the page, including those in similar circumstances or those who need support for whatever difficulties they are going through.
“I want good thoughts and prayers, but I also want people to know that they are not the only ones going through tough times, even if it’s not medical (issues),” he stated. “I am always open to talking to people. I wanted to get my story out there because maybe I can help somebody. I think my determination, willpower and perseverance could be helpful for people to see no matter what situation they are in.”

Submitted by Leona Baker, president, the Historical Society of Salisbury Township/Written byBrettSnyder, member Reuben Chambers, who lived from 1801 to 1859, was a Salisbury Township “character” in every sense of the word. He had strong opinions on many things, often reflected in print in his newspaper, The Bethania Palladium. Anecdotes about him abound - appearing in local newspapers during his lifetime and for years afterward. In addition, The Journal of the Lancaster County Historical Society published biographical articles in 1896 and in 1932, the latter by Quarryville’s George W. Hensel Jr., founder of the famous Slumbering Groundhog Lodge.
Reuben believed that labor was the source of all wealth, so he proposed replacing all currency and coins with his own notes, which he printed himself. The denominations of these “notes” ran from six minutes to 20 hours. When forced to determine an
exchange rate, he equated one hour as equal to five cents. As explained on one of the notes: “The Bearer is entitled to receive, on demand Ten Hours labor of the Bethania Manual Labor and Manufacturing Community, or an equivalent in Goods, the product of the Community at the Magazine.”
Although he labored hard to have this system adopted and printed notes for over 20 years (examples are extant from 1837 until his death in 1859), they were probably seldom, if ever, used. Just a few of these are known to have survived.
Reuben was a believer of the Thomsonian System of Practice of Medicine, founded by Samuel Thompson, a

This is the second year that the event is being held at Hibernia Park. “Last year, we had 385 participants. It was very successful,” said Crist.
Crist explained that the 5K course makes a figure eight in the park. The runners will set
off first, followed by the walkers. Families with children in strollers are welcome. However, jogging strollers are recommended because there is a portion of the course that is not paved and goes through a field.
The event will include an opening ceremony. “We have a pastor, and our vice president, Amy Cudd, will talk about our mission and where the funds are going,” Crist said. A DJ will provide music throughout the event to encourage the participants.
Also participating in the 5K walk will be Myriam Ruager,
CCCC executive director.
“Myriam pushes an empty stroller to honor the unborn and the (babies) that have been lost,” said Crist. “It is really powerful.”
The fundraiser is designed to support the agency’s ongoing mission to provide medical, educational and material support to women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. All services are 100% free and offered in both English and Spanish. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting
education, peer counseling, a homeless prevention program and community referrals. CCCC’s offices are located in Coatesville, Kennett Square and West Chester.

Reuben
self-taught American herbalist and botanist. Reuben practiced it on himself and “anybody else who would permit him,” publishing a book on the subject in 1842. He purchased herbs and other vegetable matter from small boys in the village, paying them with his paper notes, and he proceeded to manufacture his own concoctions, stocking them in his shop. One of his most famous remedies was No. 6 for toothaches, which by all accounts was stronger than red pepper or cayenne.
The press upon which The Bethania Palladium was printed was designed and made by Reuben himself. After his death, the press was reportedly purchased by Samuel Ernst of Millwood, Salisbury Township, who used it to print the monthly German-language religious
newspaper Der Waffenlose Waechter (The Weaponless Watchman), and the monthly The Acorn and Germ.
In 1871, Ernst hired a “printer’s devil,” a 14-year-old apprentice by the name of Milton S. Hershey - the boy’s first job. However, Milton did not enjoy this occupation and took steps to get himself fired. One story had him throwing his hat into the rollers of the working press; another was the dropping of a full tray of type. Whichever the method, the required result was attained and Milton was fired for his ineptitude.
As for the press, it was reportedly used by Samuel Thompson in his publishing enterprises first in Gap, then in Lancaster, and after 1884, in Kansas, where he ended his days. After his death, it was, apparently, scrapped as junk.

You walk your dog, walk for exercise, or go for a run, and most of the time you probably do not give much thought to your safety. Being aware of threats that could invade your routine is the first step
toward increasing your personal security.
According to Jerry Harper, president of Community Safety & Security Consultants (CCSC) of Lititz, raising your safety level begins with raising your awareness. “The most important thing I tell
people is to always be aware of their surroundings,” said Harper, who recommends taking a situational safety class to learn what concerning behaviors look like. “Be aware of vehicles (that are) parked nearby. Is there anyone near them? What are (those peo-
ple) doing?” Harper encourages people to trust their instincts. “If you feel uneasy, cross the street,” he said. “Walk near a residence or where you see other people so there are other witnesses involved.”
Of course, being aware also means being alert. “Make sure you’re not distracted,” said Harper. “People like to crank up the music, and they wear earbuds, so they don’t hear a vehicle coming up behind them (or) they don’t hear the stones moving on the walkway or highway when someone is running up behind them or from behind a bush,” he explained. “I tell people, ‘Keep one earbud out or keep your volume down so you have some hearing.’”
Another recommendation from Harper is to always carry pepper spray. “Have it clipped to your waist in case you’re in a situation where you need to defend yourself and create separation (between you and a threat),” said Harper, who recommends learning to use the spray properly. “We teach people to aim starting at the chest and (moving) upward,” said Harper, who noted aiming only for the eyes will not work if the assailant tries to duck. “Starting out at the chest and zig-zagging upward will maximize the effectiveness due to the vapors of the pepper spray rising upward,” he said.
Some things that can help keep you safer should be done before you even think of leaving your home. Steps such as varying the time that you walk or run and changing up your route on a regular basis are simple ways to decrease your risk. “Definitely change your routes and your times if necessary,” said Harper. “(Predators) watch for a pattern so they can plan on that behavior.” Harper recommended altering driving routes for the same reason.

Veterans Day Program
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced that Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC), 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, will host its 40th annual Veterans Day program on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m., rain or shine. The program will be held in the parking lot above the Pennsylvania Veterans Memorial while the memorial undergoes renovations.
John Spruyt, director of IGNC, will welcome the audience. Nicholas Taylor, commander of the Catholic War Veterans, Department of Pennsylvania, will deliver the keynote address. Joseph Snyder, Memorial Council trustee, will serve as the master of ceremonies.
Attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather. This year’s program is co-sponsored by the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Memorial Council and the Catholic War Veterans, Department of Pennsylvania.
Parking will be at the Arrowhead Community Club, 9-65 Fisher Ave., on Fort Indiantown Gap with shuttle bus transportation to and from the designated parking area to the cemetery. Anyone entering the area from the west is advised that there is construction on Fisher Avenue at Bittle Road. Attendees should follow the detour sign pointing north at Snitz Creek Restaurant, which will bring them to the Community Club. There will be limited handicapped-accessible parking at the cemetery itself.
The Avenue of Flags display at the cemetery will be in place through the week of Veterans Day. The Avenue of Flags is made up of casket flags that have been donated by veterans’ families. State, territory, and service flags will also be flown.

Thanks to technology, there are now phone applications that can alert those closest to you using a key word or PIN. Some apps will alert chosen individuals to your GPS location or record sound or video for an extended amount of time. “If something would happen, (the app) will start notifying the people who are important to you so they can start sharing that information with authorities,” Harper said.
Harper also advises taking a basic self-defense course. “If you are a victim of an attack, it’s nice to have options to escape a certain kind of hold or grab,” he said. “The basics of certain tactics do work to create separation.”

Pancake Breakfast To Benefit Mission Trip
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Strasburg Mennonite Church, 1514 Village Road, Strasburg, will hold a pancake
on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 10 a.m. The breakfast will include an allyou-can-eat buffet with pancakes, sausage and fruit, and it will be paid by donation.
The breakfast is organized by Strasburg Mennonite Church’s youth group, and the majority of the funds raised from the event will benefit its youth group’s mission trip to Costa Rica in 2023. The youth group takes a mission trip within the United States each year and an international mission trip every four years. The money raised from the pancake breakfast will also benefit the youth group’s other activities, such as Bible studies and a recently held barn party.
“I’ve never been out of the country before, so it will be a new experience,” said Ashley Ranck, a member of the youth group. “Mission trips are always a great experience.” Ranck has gone on mission trips with the youth group in the past, traveling to Canton, Ohio, and Niagara Falls, N.Y. The youths have also taken trips to Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville to assist with various projects.
While on mission trips, the youths assist with projects that involve repairing and painting buildings and working with local youth programs. In Ohio, the group worked with Lighthouse Ministries of Canton through its summer program.
The youth group’s trip to Costa Rica will be completed through Vida Missions, a branch of the VidaNet network of ministries. Vida Missions supports
close to 200 churches and ministries located throughout Central America. The program was started in 2003 by missionaries DeLynn and Gloria Hoover, who moved to Costa Rica to connect with the communities there and organize mission trips. In 2016, the ministry expanded to include many other Central American countries such as El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize.
Vida Missions seeks to
accomplish three main goals through its trips: enrich participants’ relationship with Christ, provide them with a global perspective and encourage them to leave their comfort zones. The first few days of each trip are used as a training session, where participants learn a drama to perform on the streets and practice house-to-house prayer.
For more information on Vida Missions, visit https://vidamissions.com.
