Church Welcomes New Pastor BY FRANCINE FULTON
Jim Weagley, a first-time author, recently announced the release of his new book, “Bet on the Turtle (My Long, Slow Journey of Faith).”
Local Author Shares His Faith Journey In New Book “My goal was to share my faith and help others with theirs,” stated Jim Weagley when explaining why he decided to write his newly released book, “Bet on the Turtle (My Long, Slow Journey of Faith).” “I really believe that at some point everyone wrestles with faith. Everyone - just by our nature - wants answers about why we are here, what we do with the time we have and what comes after this.” Weagley, a resident of Atglen and a first-time author, describes the book as a memoir and statement of faith. “I was raised in a devout Catholic family and was blessed to experience a wonderful childhood. Sadly, when I was 14, my father suffered a brain aneurysm, resulting in a disability,” he said. “We were angry at God and could not understand how He could have let this happen to our family. Unfortunately, we turned away from our faith and the church community. With the help of friends, the benefit of numerous trials and tribulations and the grace of God, I managed to rediscover my faith.”
Weagley, whose background is in sports medicine, said he never expected to write a book but felt compelled to do so after retirement. “When I retired, I knew I had more time; I prayed and it came back loud and clear that is what I need to be doing,” said Weagley. “(Until recently), I thought reading and writing were a necessary evil. I now enjoy reading, and writing was very therapeutic, and I was very happy I did it, but it was nothing I planned to do.” In the first part of the book, Weagley talks about his childhood memories in a Christian school and his church experiences, as well as his father’s injury and its impact on the family. In the second part of the book, “Reason to Believe,” Weagley, who describes himself as a very cynical person, shares scientific, historical and biblical evidence to support his belief in God. “Obviously, the first part of the book is my story that I wanted to share, so it wasn’t difficult to do,” he noted. “The other part is where I took a step back and thought about what were the most compelling reasons for someone to believe and what worked for me. I thought I
needed to be thorough and objective. I read a lot of books and referenced the Bible and spoke to a lot of people.” “I think the second part is as interesting as the first, even more so. It is more practical, and I keep a conversational approach to it,” he said, adding, “The chapters are not long, so it’s an easy read.” Weagley, who attends Mission Church in Lancaster, started writing the book in December 2018 and finished it in May 2019. His book was published after several rejections. “I (found) someone willing to take a chance on a first-time author. I feel very fortunate,” he shared. For more information about Weagley and the book, readers may visit www.faithnwellness.com. A portion of the proceeds from book sales will benefit the Parkesburg POINT youth center, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Compassion International and the Mennonite Central Committee Disaster Relief Fund. Those struggling with faith issues also invited to email Weagley with their questions at faithnwellness@comcast.net.

Even though The Parkesburg POINT’S virtual silent auction fundraiser is over, people can still make a donation and enjoy watching executive director Dwayne Walton’s Zoom conversation with sports celebrity Tim Tebow. Tebow, a Heisman Trophy winner and former National Football League player, was the featured speaker at The POINT’s fall fundraiser in October 2019.

Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen recently welcomed Eric Dorville as its new senior pastor. This is his first time as a senior pastor after serving as associate pastor for the past five years. “I started feeling God’s call to move on from where I was. I was ready to become a senior pastor,” he stated. “After lots of prayer and figuring out where God was leading us, I applied for the job in January.” Dorville took part in an interview process that was both virtual and in-person, and he preached to the congregation during a candidating weekend. Dorville was installed as pastor on Sept. 28, after which he and his wife, Maddie, a teacher, and their children, Andrew and Eleanor, relocated to East Brandywine Township.
“I had been at large churches that were busy and chaotic. This felt like a really good fit for me,” he said, noting that he was impressed with the church’s interest in serving the community. “The church has a desire to be in the community and to see it and love it well. It’s one thing to go to church, but if you are not living out your faith in the community, you are not reaching your potential as a disciple of Christ.”

Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they

the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark

In this constant onthe-go world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at times. Shopping habits have drastically changed due to an increase in big box retailers and a boom in online purchasing. As a result of that, many have noticed something missing from their holiday traditions, taking away from the spark of the season. Making time for a tangible, personal shopping experience is beneficial. There has never been a better time for nostalgia than now. What sets the Shady Maple Gift Shop apart from other stores is that it brings back fond memories of yesteryear. The Asa Packer Mansion stands today as it did when the last member of the Packer family lived there. Due to COVID-19 tours have been temporarily suspended until 2021.
But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the See Jim Thorpe pg 9

Tim Tebow from pg 1 “We had not scheduled a speaker (for the fall 2020 fundraiser), but when COVID hit, we thought, ‘Why not do a follow-up with him?’” said Walton. “He was open to it and really believes in what we were doing.” The video includes a statement by Larry Beaver, The POINT’s chairman of the board, followed by Walton’s one-on-one virtual talk with Tebow. Topics include how COVID-19 has impacted Tebow’s life, his work with the Tim Tebow Foundation and the importance of faith, especially during the pandemic. There are some humorous exchanges as well between Walton and Tebow that revolve around various topics, including the Philadelphia Eagles, where Tebow was briefly on the roster. To view the video, readers may visit https://e.givesmart.com/ events/ivG. The video is also available for viewing at www.facebook. com/parkesburg.point. Walton noted that Tebow has facilitated a partnership between The POINT and his foundation.
“They are really impressed with The POINT and our ministry with young people,” he said. Because of COVID-19, The POINT was closed in the spring and summer, but it continued to serve the community by distributing free food in conjunction with the Octorara Area School District’s Grab and Go Meal program, which included a boxed breakfast and lunch for students in need. The POINT also offered online programming. In September, the building, located at 700 Main St., Parkesburg, reopened to coincide with the beginning of the school year. “When school opened virtually, we increased our Wi-Fi bandwidth and speed so students could come and have a safe place do their schoolwork and keep social distancing,” Walton explained, noting that staffing was increased to accommodate the students. The POINT opened for limited after-school programming for the first time on Oct. 26 for registered students ages 8 to 18. “We transitioned back to the after-school
program when high school students were allowed back on campus,” Walton said. “The kids needed it so much. They were so happy and elated to be back and to see familiar faces and take part in activities and sports. It has been hard on them mentally and emotionally. We (really wanted to make) them feel good (to be back).” To donate to The POINT as part of the fall fundraiser, readers may visit www.parkesburgpoint.com and choose the Donate button.

Dorville graduated from Palmer Theological Seminary in 2010. Since then, he has held numerous positions in church leadership. He served as a high school youth discipleship coordinator at First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, and as an office manager and director of youth and young adults at Leverington Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Most recently, Dorville served as the associate pastor for discipleship and mission at First Presbyterian Church of Ambler. Penningtonville Presbyterian Church holds in-person worship services on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Services can also be viewed on YouTube. “As long as churches are obeying the rules and creating safe spaces, it works (to meet in person),” he remarked. “The hard part is not having a time of fellowship and grabbing coffee afterwards. Church is one thing, but it’s also the fellowship and community we have after.” Dorville said he believes in using
social media as a way to engage with the congregation as well as the surrounding community. “Even when COVID dies down, we will continue our livestream service,” he noted. “That expands our reach in promoting our Gospel.” The Sunday service is traditional, and Dorville’s messages are designed to make the Scripture passages relevant to today. “I really love to let the Scripture speak. I think the big thing for us as Christians is to take what is in the Bible and see how it applies to our daily lives,” he noted. With This

Protect P Pr rot otect ec ct yourself your yo urse ur self lf and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s

Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
