Pumpkin Olympics Will Mark 20 Years By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
A seasonal tradition is reaching its 20th anniversary this year. The Pumpkin Olympics will return on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, at Glen Run Valley View Farm in Atglen. Farm owners Jeff and Rhonda Stoltzfus have been putting leftover pumpkins to good use for the past two decades and raising funds for local organizations at the same time. The Pumpkin Olympics will offer all kinds of fun games, including competitions such as pumpkin throwing, pumpkin carrying and pumpkin races. A pumpkin pie eating contest and pumpkin carving demonstration will also be features of the day.
For those who would like to see pumpkins fly, there will be two pumpkin chucking teams on-site, demonstrating their catapult-style throwing machines that can send pumpkins flying across the farm fields. The Smokin Llamas and Tree Buckets teams will be on hand to chuck pumpkins and talk to visitors. “This is the fun event. We come here to try new things and spend our leftover pumpkins,” said Tom Bush of the Smokin Llamas. For those who would like pumpkins for holiday pies and Thanksgiving décor, there will be a booth where visitors can purchase the perfect pumpkin for baking or decorating. “The pumpkin crop was very good this year, though some of the largest ones didn’t quite See Pumpkin Olympics pg 8

Suggested shoebox gifts include combs, flip-flops, sunglasses, hair bows, friendship bracelets, tote bags and purses, foam balls, finger puppets, plastic dinosaurs, play cars, interactive toys with batteries, coloring books and crayons, stickers and watercolor painting sets. Senders may also include a personal note to the recipient. Items that are prohibited include candy and gum, toothpaste, medications and vitamins, breakable items, aerosol cans and war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures. “All these rules are because of the countries that receive the boxes,” Amy noted. She said that each box should contain a “wow” item. “What we are really trying to concentrate on is the integrity of the boxes and the quality of what is in them,” said Amy. “We include ‘wow ’ gifts so when the kid opens the box, he says, ‘Wow!’” “Wow” items include a soccer ball with a manual air pump, a stuffed animal, an outfit of clothing or a small musical instrument such as a harmonica or recorder. “School supplies are important because some of (the children) can’t go to school unless they have pencils and pens, paper (and other items),” Amy added.
Children in Fiji enjoyed receiving shoeboxes full of gifts through Operation Christmas Child during the 2018 holiday season. Will and Amy have been involved with OCC for a number of years and have personally taken part in shoebox distributions in several countries, including Paraguay. This year, they were named coordinators for the OCC MidAtlantic North Region. “We are not in charge of a specific team anymore. We stepped up to regional staff. We are in charge of four teams - Chester County, Delaware County, Philadelphia and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area,” Amy explained. “We are involved in training leaders and doing leadership seminars and speaking to the teams to encourage more participation.” For more information about

Don has continued his father’s environmental stewardship role on and off the farm. In addition to implementing environmentally friendly farming practices like low- and no-tilling on their fields, Don currently serves as the vice chair of the Chester County Conservation District’s board, of which he has been an active member since 2013. The commissioners and the Ag Council also presented the Distinguished Service Agriculture Award to Duncan Allison, a champion of agriculture and key figure in the development and advancement of the Chester County Ag Council. The Chester County commissioners, along with the county’s Agricultural Development Council (Ag Council), recently presented two agricultural awards at Conebella Farm in Elverson. The 2019 Farmers of the Year Award was presented to the Gable family, fifth-generation dairy farmers who own and operate Conebella Farm. They are well known for their 100% registered Ayrshire herd and valueadded dairy products, including their artisan, raw-milk cheeses and cheese spreads. The Gables have remained successful over the years through identifying additional opportunities for selling directly to customers at their on-farm store, farmers markets, festivals and more than 40 retail accounts across the region and online. In 2007, Don and Pam Gable knew they needed to expand beyond their traditional business model - selling milk to a dairy cooperative - to keep the farm viable for their sons one day. They started by selling raw milk from their farm to local customers. They continued to expand their product line to include a range of preservative-free, fresh and aged cheeses. This was soon followed by yogurt, yogurt smoothies and cultured butter. The Gables’ now-grown sons have developed their own custom hay business from the farm and have branched out into selling specialty low-sugar hay for diabetic horses in addition to helping

Thomas To Release Memoir Mauldin Publishing & Literacy House has announced the official release of “Surviving Racism: A Memoir of Life, Love, and Faith - The Charles & Alice Thomas Story” by author Alice Thomas. The book’s release date is Saturday, Nov. 9. In the book, Thomas tells the story of her lifelong love and how she and her husband persevered through racism in the pre- and post-Civil Rights era. Despite struggles, Thomas became an advocate for minorities and a Civil Rights pioneer and activist in the West Chester community. Born and raised in West Chester, Thomas has been involved in her community since childhood. She served as a counselor in the guidance office at Henderson High School, focusing her career on developing young adults and advancing social justice, integration, and minority representation. In 1978, Thomas helped form the Black Student Union due to a lack of minority leadership in the student government at the time. In 1998, Dr. Clifford DeBaptiste, who was serving as mayor of West Chester, created the Alice M. Thomas Scholarship Fund to honor the 35 years of service Thomas gave to Henderson, its students, and the community. The fund is an ongoing testament to Thomas’ focus on social justice, academic achievement, and community involvement. For information on ordering a paperback copy of the book, readers may visit www.mauldinpublishing.com. Urban Centers Forums have been conducted since the development of VISTA 2025, the County’s economic development strategy. The forums are the result of a partnership involving the Chester County Commissioners, the County Department of Community Development, the County Planning Commission and the Chester County Economic Development Council. County Planning Commission executive director Brian O’Leary noted that his office is implementing projects in Landscapes3 that are intended to help the boroughs and city of Coatesville, such as an Urban Centers Design Guide. He said the Vision Partnership Program (VPP) is available for all municipalities in Chester County, including urban centers, to help improve their planning programs while achieving consistency with Landscapes3. More information about the VPP is
available at www.chescoplanning .org/municorner/vpp.cfm. County Department of Community Development director Pat Bokovitz also noted that urban centers are encouraged to begin coordinating with his staff and Myers on Chester County Community Revitalization Program (CRP) grant opportunities for infrastructure improvements. He said the next application process will begin in the spring. Bokovitz added that the program is connected to Landscapes3 because it directs appropriate growth to the county’s urban centers. More information about the CRP is available at https://chesco.org/ 1924/Apply-for-Grants. Municipalities also can sign up for alerts about community development grants by contacting Department of Community Development planning supervisor Shaun Bollig at sbollig@chesco.org. Event Will Support North Star
Concert from pg 1 Pequea E.C. Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, will host a concert titled “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns and Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. “Then Sings My Soul,” an original musical presentation by LeeP Productions, features four professional vocalists from the Lancaster area. Highlighting historical moments in the Rev. Billy Graham’s ministry, the program shares the history behind more than 30 wellknown hymns, many of which were written as a result of tragic and trying circumstances. Selections include “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” and “Just As I Am.” The production also includes an old-fashioned hymn sing. The performers seek not only to entertain audiences,

trucks licensed to operate in the county. County Planning Commission Urban Planner Kevin Myers discussed short-term rentals, which are more commonly known as Airbnb or VRBO rentals. These are residential properties or portions of residential properties that are available for rent on a limited duration basis; there are more than 250 of this type of rental in Chester County. Myers said these rentals are popular options in communities with higher lodging demand, thriving business or entertainment districts, seasonal destinations, significant tourism attractions, close proximity to universities and large special events such as fairs, concerts and festivals. Myers noted that municipalities should consider some factors before allowing this type of lodging, including potential neighborhood opposition, the effects on housing availability and affordability and effects on commercial lodging such as hotels and bedand-breakfasts. Myers also provided suggestions for municipalities, such as examining policies and determining methods of regulation such as zoning ordinances or standalone ordinances. Chester County Health Department environmental health specialist Carrie Lane spoke about the importance of business owners and municipal officials reaching out to the County Health Department for assistance when opening new restaurants, breweries and businesses. Phoenixville Borough planning and land development director and zoning officer David Boelker spoke about how consumers have shifted their spending habits toward more online shopping versus brick-and-mortar stores. He said that, as a result, when people go out in their spare time, they often seek experiences. He highlighted the experiences people can have in Chester County’s boroughs
but also to educate them on hymns and their histories, as well as honor the memory of Billy Graham. Admission is free, and no tickets are needed for entry. A freewill offering will be received with a portion of the proceeds going to the Billy Graham Library. Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. After the service, all in attendance will be invited to enjoy a time of food and fellowship and an opportunity to meet the performers. The Chester County Urban Centers Forum was held on Oct. 8 at Victory Brewing Company in Parkesburg. In accordance with the theme, “Your Town as a Destination,” Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell highlighted the importance of the urban centers. According to the commissioners, Chester County’s urban centers are becoming destination towns where more people want to live, work and visit to enjoy unique experiences offered by breweries and tasting rooms, farmers markets, food trucks and short-term rentals such as Airbnbs and VRBOs. Commissioners’ chair Kichline said continued revitalization of the 15 boroughs and the city of Coatesville is a focus of Landscapes3, the county’s update to its comprehensive plan. At the forum, Kent Steeves of the new Braeloch Brewing in Kennett Square spoke about some of the hurdles people might face when opening a brewery or tasting room. He credited Kennett Square Borough officials with being forward thinking when it comes to welcoming new businesses. Lisa O’Neill, owner of Growing Roots, spoke about the benefits of farmers markets in Chester County. Her organization currently runs three markets in Chester County and one in Berks County. She said the markets help bring visitors to the borough, and these visitors then patronize the local businesses. Eric and Elaine Kelleher of On the Roll Food Truck were on hand to discuss the benefits of food trucks in urban centers. A County Planning Commission analysis states there are currently approximately 25 breweries in Chester County; 10 active farmers markets the county, six of which are open during the offseason; and dozens of food

The Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA) recently named the Chester County Library as the Library of the Year during the association’s annual conference in Erie. The designation comes on the heels of the library’s recognition as a PA Forward Gold Star Library in July. Each year, the PaLA recognizes members who have contributed significantly to the library profession and the betterment of libraries in Pennsylvania. The association’s newest award honors a library that exhibits excellence in serving its community, advancing staff development, and leadership. The Chester County Library is committed to serving its community, and every staff member participates in community outreach events outside of the library’s walls. This outreach is included in part of the library’s strategic planning through increasing the community’s awareness and recognition of the library’s services and efforts. Since 2017, the Chester County Library has also participated in the Office of Commonwealth Libraries’ Turning Outward Initiative. This program has been a three-year commitment of training, coaching, and mentoring in Community Engagement.
Members of the Northeastern Region of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) will celebrate National Model Railroad Month, November, by holding open house events on select dates throughout the month. Local model railroaders will open their homes to the public and showcase their model railroad displays. Visitors will be invited to consider joining NMRA. To see a schedule of the open houses, readers may visit www.modelrailroad openhouse.com and click Schedule. People may click on specific dates to see which model railroad displays will be open on that date.

Pumpkin Olympics from pg 1 get the size because of the dry weather at the end,” Rhonda said. “We planted over 50 different varieties of different sizes, shapes and colors to get a good array. The newest one this year for us was a yellow one called Mellow Yellow.” This year’s biggest pumpkin at the farm weighs in excess of 800 pounds. It will be dropped from a crane at 3:15 p.m. An even bigger bang will follow during the grand finale - the pumpkin avalanche - when truckloads of pumpkins will be dumped in a great wave, crashing downhill to shatter and break into pieces that will make for enjoyable eating for the cattle on the farm. Everyone is invited to join in the “smashfest” that will follow the avalanche to help break any pumpkins that did not split apart in the spill. Volunteers scheduled to provide assistance at the event include members of the Parkesburg Baptist and Maple Grove Mennonite youth groups, as well as students from Octorara Junior-Senior High School, Lancaster Mennonite School and The Parkesburg POINT youth center. “It’s mostly junior high and high school students running the games. The adults help with the gate and supervising,” Rhonda said. “It is a very good experience to give back to the community by serving. It’s an environment where they can serve and play themselves too. It’s a good mix to get kids excited about serving.” The POINT executive director Dwayne Walton is enthusiastic about the event. “First, there’s seeing how Jeff and Rhonda support the community through this event, but it also gives some of our students the opportunity to help,” he said. “It gives them the opportunity to set up, run games and even clean up.” Plenty of food will be available, much of it with a pumpkin theme. There will also be barbecue and a baked goods table. The Octorara Football Boosters’ food wagon will be on-site. “Rhonda, Jeff and their girls were a huge part of keeping softball alive at Octorara for many years. As a gesture, we come here to help, and they generously allow us to sell drinks to help fund our program in the school,” said Phil Tidd from the Octorara Softball Association. Proceeds from the event go to The POINT, the Maple Grove Mennonite Church Mission Fund, Lancaster Mennonite School field hockey, Lancaster Mennonite Hans Herr Chapter FFA, Octorara FFA, Octorara Junior-Senior High School softball and football, Keystone Valley Fire Department and Ambulance of Parkesburg and Parkesburg Community Churches Organization. The YMCA of Greater Brandywine raised a record amount of more than $170,000 during the 10th annual Chester County Corporate Championship held at Stonewall Links in Elverson on Sept. 30. The total was more than five times the amount raised in 2010, the first year the event was held. This event, presented by Precor, raises funds to benefit the Seventh Grade Initiative program, which offers any seventh-grader in Chester County a complimentary one-year membership to the YMCA. The Seventh Grade Initiative program is an opportunity for the Y to engage, cultivate and connect with youths in their early teenage years, a time that is crucial to their development and when they may begin distancing themselves from formal organizations, friends and family and experimenting with

port, Teamwork, Experience, Purpose and Success, is a structured day program. Clients meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Main Line rehab facility to focus on socialization, functional skills and other tasks. Discussion topics include daily living skills, planning and scheduling, household management, self-advocacy and independence skills. Andrea Kiotis, STEPS program coordinator, explained that the clients themselves lead participants through the meetings, which take place in a separate area at the facility that includes tables and a kitchenette. “It’s very interactive; it’s definitely not a class setting. I’m not the teacher who stands and talks,” shared Kiotis. “Everyone is very involved. Everyone is working on something different depending
on what they need to become more independent in certain areas.” For example, she said, attendees work on decision making and how to block out distractions in order to focus on the task at hand. “Communication is huge. A lot of (the clients) are working on conversation skills and learning to initiate a conversation,” Kiotis noted. “We offer conversation starters that we practice, and they learn about open-ended questions versus closed-ended questions.” Each month focuses on a different lesson plan. For October, the focus was stress management. November’s focus is time management. “We focus on community safety, or sometimes it’s attention skills or conversational skills,” Kiotis explained. “Each activity is geared toward focusing on those skills that go with the
theme.” At the conclusion of the food drive, the collected items will be delivered by the STEPS group to the food bank, located at 650 Pennsylvania Drive, Exton. “We will go in a few different cars, and they can physically see everything they’ve worked on from beginning to end. It will be exciting for them,” Kiotis said. “They will also learn the exact amount of food that was donated.” For more information about the food drive or the STEPS program, readers may contact Kiotis at 610-280-0180, ext. 115, or akiotis@mainline-rehab.com. More information is also available at www.mainline-rehab.com and www.facebook.com/Main LineRehab. The Facebook page also contains a video made by the STEPS clients about the food drive.

Sheriff Receives State Award Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh recently continued her string of firsts at the 44th annual Thomas J. McGinley Awards Banquet and Conference in Greensburg. Welsh, recognized as Chester County’s first female sheriff and the first woman to serve on the executive board of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), became the first sheriff in the state to receive the Thomas J. McGinley Memorial Meritorious Award. It recognizes outstanding and dedicated service to the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Pennsylvania (DSAP), which holds the conference each year. James Lee, executive director of the DSAP, said he was pleased to see Welsh receive well-deserved recognition. Lee said the award was first presented in 1997, a
year after the death of McGinley, who had founded DSAP and had become its first president. Since then, the recipients have all been deputies. Lee said he told Helen McGinley, the founder’s widow, that Welsh would be this year’s recipient and she suggested her late husband would be pleased. In its early years, the DSAP had no connections to the Pennsylvania Sheriffs’ Association (PSA), despite sharing common goals, Lee said. Welsh, a former PSA president, helped change that, he said, adding that the two organizations now enjoy a collegial relationship that has benefited both sheriffs and deputies throughout the state. During her nearly 20-year tenure as sheriff, Welsh has broken numerous gender barriers. Shortly after being elected in
1999, she was recognized as the first woman to be elected president of a graduating class at the National Sheriffs Institute at the Department of Corrections in Longmont, Colo. In July 2009, Welsh was sworn in as the first female president of the PSA. In January 2011, she was the first female elected to the board of the NSA, which oversees more than 3,000 sheriffs across the nation. She currently serves on the NSA’s executive committee as first vice president, the first woman to hold that post. This year’s DSAP conference was held at the Ramada Hotel by Wyndham in Greensburg. It was hosted by the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office.

Offering congratulations are James Lee (right), executive director of the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Pennsylvania (DSAP), and Larry Shuga, the DSAP chaplain and last year’s award recipient.
National Juvenile Justice Week Forum Held A National Juvenile Justice Week forum was recently organized by the League of Women Voters of Chester County (LWVCC). Participants included state Sen. Andy Dinniman, state Rep. Dan Williams, local and state police, and juvenile justice officials. The forum, held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester, included discussions on holding youths accountable for their actions, engaging them in activities to restore victims and communities, and ensuring sufficient opportunities to move them toward productive citizenship and away from further criminal activity. Dinniman, who serves as minority chair of the Senate Education Committee, presented an official Senate resolution recognizing Juvenile Justice Week and discussed the importance of recognizing the impact of trauma on children and young people. In attendance were police and law enforcement officers from various departments, including the City of Coatesville Police Department, the South Coatesville Police Department, and the Caln Township Police Department, as well as troopers from the
Pennsylvania State Police. At the event, Dinniman and Williams recognized four individuals with special Senate citations for their contributions to the juvenile justice community. The honorees include Cpl. Jason Culbertson of the Caln Township Police Department, who works as a youth mentor in the Coatesville Area School District, and Officer Justin Fonock of the South Coatesville Police Department, who assisted a mother and her two children after they were struck by a motorist. Dinniman and Williams also honored Cpl. Reginald Easterling Jr., a patrol unit supervisor with the Pennsylvania State Police. Easterling, who has spent many hours mentoring at-risk youths, served previously as the Chester Country community service officer for Embreeville Barracks. He is also a former director of the Chester County Camp Cadet Program and a founding advisory board member of the Coatesville Area Juvenile Alliance. The fourth honoree was Calvin Grove, a Coatesville native and boxer who rose to fame as IBF featherweight world champion in 1988. He continues to mentor at-risk youths in the Coatesville area through participation in sports and other activities. The event also included a roundtable discussion featuring Gary Blair, director of the Chester County Youth Center; Don Corry, chief of Chester County Juvenile Probation; Keisha Hudson, Montgomery County deputy public defender; Jane Kennedy, Caln Township Youth Aid Panel; Rene D. Merion, Chester County deputy district attorney; Analisa Sondegaard, magisterial district judge; and Bob Tomassini, deputy director of the juvenile court judges.
