In addition to craft sales, homemade food will be available to purchase, and there will be a visit by Santa. More than 40 artisans, crafters and vendors will be featured. “There will be two floors full of crafters,” said the parish’s director of religious education, Janice Dagney, who is also one of the event organizers. Offered for sale will be wreaths, wooden flags, candles, jewelry, holiday décor, soaps, candles, crocheted and sewn items, pottery and pet items, including dog bandanas. A new crafter this year will offer birdhouses made

“Each of our crafters donates an item, so we will have more than 40 different prizes throughout the day.” Food items offered for sale will include homemade chicken corn soup, chili, gourmet chicken salad and quiches. For dessert, there will be baked goods, including homemade nut rolls, as well as kettle corn. “Some people will come just for the food,” Dagney commented.

Santa will stop by for a visit and sit for pictures from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A nominal fee will be charged. Visitors can enter to win door prizes throughout the day. Winners do not have to be present to claim their prize. “Each of our crafters donates an item, so we will have more than 40 different prizes throughout the day,” Dagney said. Attendees will have an opportunity to win a turkey for Thanksgiving. No purchase is necessary. “When (people) walk in, they will get a ticket to be entered into the drawing,” Dagney explained. “We will have a ‘turkey hunt’; they will have to search for the turkey container to put their ticket in.” There will also be a drawing for themed gift baskets that have been assembled by preschool families. “We have a preschool basket with preschool games and toys, a family basket with gift cards to places to

Dowling’s latest picture book is titled “Open Your Eyes (Discover the Cecropia Moth).” Her other books have offered nature stories, school and church program ideas and puppet skits. She also wrote “History of Churches and Worship Groups in the Oxford Area” and “Mission Stories,” which details true stories from people in the Upper Oxford and Cochranville areas who served as missionaries. The shop is located on the second floor of the church, which can be accessed by the stairs or an elevator. “It’s a double Sunday school room rooms 205 and 207,” explained Hartgrove. “We set up a whole slew of tables all around the walls and in the middle. And we have bookcases that we put on the tables. We try and make it attractive. It’s like a boutique.” Along with the Ten Thousand Villages merchandise, the shop features items from the Presbyterian Coffee Project. “(We offer) equal exchange coffee and tea from Costa Rica and Guatemala, chocolate bars and Palestinian oil that comes to us through Coffee Project,” noted Hartgrove. Other items offered for sale include gifts from Women of the Cloud Forest, which includes jewelry, balsa wood birds, balsa sculptures and ornaments made in Nicaragua, Nepal, Ecuador and Peru. “This is our 19th year of having the shop,” said Hartgrove, noting that the sale items come from Ten Thousand Villages Mechanicsburg. “They order for us and bring us the stuff on consignment. Anything we don’t sell they take back.” She added that the church receives a small percentage of the shop’s proceeds. Oxford Presbyterian Church is located at 6 Pine

Politics in the 1920s Submitted by Leona Baker of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township Several years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Robinson donated a political banner to the Historical Society of Salisbury Township featuring candidates John Aldus McSparran and Frank Custer Musser. Made of silk and embroidered in gold thread with gold spiral fringe and wording on both sides, it was made for the election campaign of 1922 - tangible evidence of political activity in Salisbury Township at that time. McSparran was a candidate for governor in 1922. His family members were dairy farmers in Lancaster County for many generations. As a secretary, treasurer and eventually master of the Pennsylvania State Grange, he became interested in politics. He entered the 1922 gubernatorial race but lost to Gifford Pinchot, although he received nearly 40% of the votes. Such was McSparran’s influence

The mom of the week is encouraged to share her story, favorite aspect of motherhood and her favorite Bible verse. “It’s important to have an outlet like this. It’s vital to have people in the same season of life as you for advice and encouragement and to know you’re not alone,” Fry said. Members of the group support each other through challenges such as miscarriages and infertility, offering words of encouragement and prayer to struggling mothers. The members also bounce ideas off one another on topics that include the best way to handle a toddler’s tantrum or successful methods of treating a child’s rash. Although many of the women are currently navigating the same stage of motherhood, the Southern End Strollers group includes mothers of all kinds: Some members have a newborn child, while others have children who are adults. On the first Tuesday of every month, Joe on the Go Coffee Co. donates coffee for the participants of the walk. In addition to the regular walks, the Southern End Strollers also meet for special events such as Moms’ Night Out, where group members meet at a restaurant for dinner. Fry plans to organize a bonfire to celebrate Thanksgiving with her fellow strollers in late November. For more information, search for “Southern End Strollers” on Facebook or Instagram.

Those who are hesitant to attend the upcoming program may bring a family member or friend for support. “It’s appropriate to bring support people with you - pastors, counselors or friends - to help them understand what you are navigating those few weeks,” Twila noted. For more information and to register, visit www.gtwy .life and choose “Surviving the Holidays/GriefShare Seminar.” Walk-ins will also be welcome. (We discuss) what is yours to do and what you did with them and how to sort it out.” “Grief is hard work,” she added. “You can’t do everything, but you also don’t want to sit at home. It’s finding that balance. It’s about how to move on while honoring your loved one.” Each person who attends Surviving the Holidays will receive his or her own manual. “It has a journal and a small devotional for each day. There are also tips to refer to,” Twila said.

For those who have lost a loved one, Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a difficult time. Especially challenging can be family gatherings where a person’s friend or family member is particularly missed. To help people cope during the weeks surrounding Thanksgiving and Christmas, a Surviving the Holidays seminar will be presented on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. The meeting will be led by Paul and Twila Ranck, who facilitate weekly GriefShare meetings at the church. Participants will discuss several topics, including how to deal with the many emotions they will face during the holidays and what to do about traditions and other changes. They will also be provided with tips about how to navigate social events. “Surviving the Holidays is a stand-alone group. It will focus on the six weeks between Thanksgiving and

Christmas,” Twila explained. “We will also touch on (handling grief during) birthdays and anniversaries.” The curriculum for the program comes from Church Initiative, a nondenominational, nonprofit ministry that creates and publishes video-based programs that help churches minister to people experiencing life crises. Church Initiative programs include DivorceCare, GriefShare and Single and Parenting. “(The curriculum) has been rewritten, and we will run the new version,” Twila noted. “Church Initiative is based in Wake Forest, N.C. It helps the leaders run the programs.” Twila said that attendees will learn how to walk the line between staying at home and not dealing with the holidays versus attending social functions as they have previously done. “We try to find the balance between overcommitting and doing everything everyone asks of you and sitting home

Due to the Great Depression occurring during the 1920s, some Salisbury Township families put food on the table by selling alcohol made with makeshift backwoods distilleries. Musser, with several other prominent local men, formed the Lancaster County Coalition Party of Democrats and Independent Republicans. Musser was to be their candidate for mayor in 1921, on the ticket with McSparran. While McSparran lost his race, Musser not only won the mayoral race but served two four-year terms. In that time,

He also worked hard to get the cobweb of phone and electric lines along the city streets placed underground to improve the appearance. Musser was also a member of several men’s clubs of the era: Moose, Elk, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. This membership may have been the catalyst of the Salisbury Township extension of the Musser/McSparran dedication, for the Knights of Pythias had an active branch in Gap. The brick building that now houses Houder’s Town Clock Cheese Shoppe on Route 41 was the local Knights meeting place. Musser ran for Congress in 1929 but lost. Information about McSparran was gathered in part from Paul Beers’ “Pennsylvania Politics Today and Yesterday.” Information about Musser was gathered with the help of Brett Snyder from the Lancaster Democratic Committee and newspaper articles.
