Gateway Church To Collect Christmas Gifts For OCC BY FRANCINE FULTON
Gateway Church, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg, is a designated dropoff location for Operation Christmas Child (OCC), an annual effort that provides shoeboxes filled with gifts to children in need
worldwide. OCC is a program of Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian relief organization. The community is invited to participate by gathering small toys, personal care items and school supplies and placing them in a shoebox during National Collection Week, See Gateway Church pg 5

hose who attend the book sale taking place at Moores Memorial Library in Christiana will also be able to shop for Thanksgiving and Christmas décor and gifts as part of the Friends of the Library’s combined book sale and holiday yard sale that will open on Thursday, Nov. 11, from 1 to 7 p.m. The sale will continue during regular library hours on Friday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 8 a.m. to noon. Admission is free. The sale will take place in the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library. “Everything will be at reasonable prices that people are used to,” said Jeannette Kolb, Friends vice president. “We will have DVDs (that will be) buy-one-get-one-free and books at a discount. We have a lot of Christmas books.”
There is also a young adult section featuring books displayed on skateboards and bookshelves made from rain gutters, which were repurposed by Friends member Janice Crills. Since the library’s building once was home to a bank, shoppers can find rare and unique books in the “vault.” Donated items accepted by the Friends include books, jigsaw puzzles, DVDs, audiobooks and CDs. Especially needed are current fiction tiles, large-print books and gently used children’s books. Items that are not accepted include encyclopedias, computer manuals, VHS and cassette tapes, Readers Digest Condensed Books and textbooks that are older than three years. Books should not be water damaged, moldy or dirty or have loose or missing pages or detached covers. Those who have more than five boxes of items to donate are asked to contact the library in advance.
“You have hundreds of pumpkins rolling down the hill. You can feel the ground (shake) and hear them,” said Rhonda Stoltzfus, when describing the Great Pumpkin Avalanche, which will be featured during the 21st Pumpkin Olympics on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Glen Run Valley View Farm in Atglen. The event is presented by Rhonda and her husband, Jeff, the farm’s owners.

Also for sale will be leftover donations from the Friends’ yard sale held this past summer, which netted nearly $400 for the library. The yard sale items will be located in the community room next to the bookstore. “(The leftover items) gave us the idea to add to the book sale,” said Friends president Joan Esworthy. Community members who would like to donate yard sale items are asked to bring their donations to the library during operating hours. Books in the Read Moore Book Store, which come from community donations and the library’s collection, are displayed on unique shelving, including a canoe. There are also shelves that were made from a baby grand piano. “Someone didn’t want (the piano) and gave it to one of our members. They gutted it out and made it (into a bookshelf),” explained Karen Woods, Friends treasurer.

Factory To Hold Extraordinary Block Party BY ANN MEAD ASH
Ellie Green, director of hospitality with The Factory Ministries, is excited to be organizing the 2021 Extraordinary Block Party after the 2020 event had to be adjusted due to COVID-19 concerns. “(In 2020), we did it as a drive-through,” recalled Green, who said Factory staff brought popcorn and cider to visitors in their cars. “This year, we will be able to do it properly.” A proper block party, which will include food, live music, and games, is being planned by members of FÊTE (Factory Events Team Extraordinaire). The event will be held outside at The Factory, 3293 Lincoln
Highway East, Paradise, on Friday, Nov. 19, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. The party, which is timed to coincide with the Extraordinary Give, will feature bonfires, hay bales for seating, popcorn, barbecued chicken, and beverages, such as hot cider. Live music will be provided by Summit Hill Bluegrass. Green reported that yard games, such as cornhole, will be available to play and a photo booth will be on site. For children, the party will offer face painting and a petting zoo. “Kids and adults will have a great time,” said Green. To celebrate the spirit of generosity in the greater Paradise community, The Factory has invited several other area
nonprofits to take part in the event. “There will be (Extraordinary Give) giving stations (at the block party),” explained Kevin Nofziger, director of development with The Factory. Green noted that food and games are free and anyone is welcome. “The idea is to just cel-
ebrate generosity,” she said, “(and to celebrate) how much the community pours into one another and supports one another.” Readers who wish to learn more about The Factory may visit www.thefactory ministries.com.
