Now in its second year of operation, Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue Inc. is continuing its mission to rescue homeless, abused or unwanted dogs and cats and find them permanent, loving homes. The nonprofit, no-kill, all-volunteer organization was founded on Jan. 1, 2018. “Last year, 100 dogs were adopted and 70-plus cats,” reported Mary Bauer, founder. “This year, we have surpassed those numbers already. We are at 150 for dogs and we are still tallying the cats, but we passed that (number) as well.” The rescue has also developed a

relationship with the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. This past spring, the rescue was able to help homeless Vietnam veteran David Tillman provide care for his dog, Dakota, until the pair could be reunited. A foster family housed Dakota for several months while Tillman attended a program at the VA. Tillman and Dakota are now doing well and residing at the Whitehall Apartments in Spring City, a facility that provides permanent supportive housing for at-risk veterans in Chester County. Lucky Dawg will collect items such snacks and gift cards for veterans at

A holiday craft show, featuring handmade items from more than 40 local artisans, will take place at Freedom Village Brandywine, 15 Freedom Blvd., Coatesville, on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, which provides a safe haven for local animals in need through foster homes. In lieu of an admission fee, craft show visitors are asked to bring donations of snacks, soup mixes, cocoa mixes, full-size candy bars and gum, which will be given to residents at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. Also needed are $5 Wawa gift cards. The effort is part of a collaboration between the rescue and the VA. “Our See Craft Show pg 5

More than 200 people spent a day learning about energy efficiency and renewable energy options during the Chester County Clean Energy Open House Tour on Oct. 19. Organized by the Sierra Club and endorsed by the Chester County commissioners and other local and state elected officials, the tour showcased the solar, geothermal and electric technologies some county residents are using to reduce monthly energy bills, reduce

harmful carbon emissions and enjoy tax credits and cash incentives as they improve their property values. Several municipal facilities were on the tour, including Uwchlan Township. Uwchlan Township used state incentives to install electric vehicle charging stations at its township office. While providing a service to the community, the charging stations generate revenue that will be used to fund other energy and environmental protection activities in the township. Two schools were featured: Hillside Elementary School in Berwyn and the Delaware Valley Friends School (DVFS) in Paoli, both of which utilize solar power. Hosts of both newer and older homes on the tour explained how they were taking steps to reduce their emissions. Hosts explained that some of their reasons for going solar or installing electric or geothermal heat pumps were tied to wanting to be part of a community-wide effort to protect clean air for everyone. Efficient house design was also a main feature of the tour. Several homes were designed with “Passive

House” design principles. Rick Davis of Downingtown has a home on 2 acres, and the home is situated to take full advantage of the sun. Part of the design included banking the home into the hillside with a fully day-lit first floor and a second story at the north side grade. Visitors got to enjoy Davis’ extensive gardens and beehives as well. In southern Chester County, participants visited two large installations at Longwood Gardens and Marlborough Mushrooms. One a nonprofit, the other a business, they share a longstanding commitment to conserving open space and protecting soil and water resources. Investing in a large system allowed both Longwood and Marlborough Mushrooms to stabilize their costs, and it aligns with their commitment to caring for the land. Engineer Mark Connolly gave tours along with staff members at Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, a farming, gardening and handcrafting community that includes adults with developmental disabilities. The community’s solar system powers several of its buildings, including a Community Health Center, a bakery and a café, and it charges the community’s electric vehicle.

Another open house venue that generated the most curiosity was in northern Chester County at the home of Elizabeth Failor. She wowed visitors with her batterycharged robotic mower, which cuts her 2-acre property with no noise or pollution. The tour covered much of the county with 37 open houses in the greater Tredyffrin, Phoenixville, West Chester, Downingtown, Coatesville and Kennett areas. The local tour was organized under the auspices of the National Solar Tour and Solar United Neighbors. The tour concluded at Downingtown’s Victory Brewing Company with a brewery tour. The County Board of Commissioners joined the end-ofday celebration and awarded the Clean Energy Open House Tour a citation “thank(ing) the volunteers and partners of the Clean Energy Tour who have worked to promote a more sustainable future for Chester County.” Pictured on front: Camphill Village Kimberton Hills was featured during the Chester County Clean Energy Open House Tour on Oct. 19. Greystone Hall from pg 1 While local community theater groups traditionally stage their plays in theaters, schools or similar venues, the upcoming production of “The Manor” by members of Colonial Playhouse will take place in Greystone Hall, 1034 Phoenixville Pike, West Chester. During the play, audience members will be led through the mansion to see different scenes portrayed. “It is a unique experience for the audience as they move from room to room to watch the show,” said director Sam Barrett. Colonial Playhouse, a nonprofit community theater group based in Delaware County, will present “The Manor” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14, 15 and 16, at 7 p.m. There will also be matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16 and 17. Additionally, the play will be performed on Thanksgiving weekend, with shows on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29 and 30, at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. “The Manor,” a dramatic play by Kathrine Bates, is based on a true story about a family involved in the Teapot Dome scandal of the 1920s. The play is staged annually in Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, where the story upon which it is based actually took place. “They have been doing this (play) in California for 20-plus years. The woman who wrote it starred in it,” explained Barrett. “(Bates) used the original house, which is now a big tourist attraction. She wrote the play so that the audience moves from room to room to see the story.” This will be the third year that Colonial Playhouse actors have staged the show in West Chester. Chester County actors in the play include Greg Speca from Downingtown, who plays Greg, and Loren Delaney from West Chester, who plays Ellie. “Velda Moog, the owner of Greystone Hall in West Chester

saw the show and said (to the playwright), ‘I have a Greystone in West Chester, Pa.,’” Barrett said, explaining how the show came to Chester County. “The playwright came out to visit three years ago and Velda looked around for some community theaters (to stage the play). We had a meeting, and we joined together to put (on) the show.” During the play, audience members will begin their theater experience in the Great Hall and then move to various rooms in the mansion. Each scene will be staged three times, and the audiences will rotate so that everyone sees the whole play, but in a different order. There will be a 15-minute intermission between Acts I and II when snacks and light refreshments will be served. Barrett said that staging a play inside a building is both fun and challenging. Currently the actors are rehearsing every Sunday at the location for “blocking,” which is determining the spot where they stand while saying their lines. “One of the really cool things is that we aren’t using a set. But that is a challenge, too, because you are pretty much doing theater in the round because the audience sits where they want,” Barrett said. “We put out a couple extra chairs in the rooms, and we encourage the audience to sit anywhere. So an actor may have the spot blocked, but when he gets there, an audience member might be sitting there. The play is not interactive, but you might see an actor sitting right next to an audience member to do their scene.” Barrett encourages local residents to view the show, which is only performed at the two venues. “(Local residents) will only see it here,” she said. Tickets for “The Manor” should be purchased in advance at www.colonialplayhouse.net/ the-manor-info. For more information about the Colonial Playhouse, readers

Sizomu will also discuss the role music played in the community’s survival and his own personal journey. “They have their own music, which is like Ugandan Jewish music,” Cutler said. “It is fascinating. They put together a CD, and it was up for a Grammy (in 2005). They lost to Paul Simon.” Cutler said that Sizomu visits the United States annually, speaking at various locations throughout the country. It is his first time speaking at Beth Irsael. The event is being sponsored by the Kehillah of Chester County. The talk, which will also include a time for questions and answers, is free and open to the public. Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, the chief rabbi of a Jewish community in Uganda known as the Abayudaya, or “People of Judah,” will speak at Beth Israel Congregation in Chester Springs on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. Sizomu is the first native-born black rabbi in sub-Saharan Africa and the first Jewish member of his country’s parliament. Rabbi Jon Cutler from Beth Israel personally spent time with Sizomu and his family in Uganda when Cutler was deployed in Africa with the military. “When I was in the military in 2011, I was stationed in East Africa to be director of religious affairs for the military and for the State Department,” said Cutler. “My job was to go to five African nations and to engage with key religious leaders to support them

in developing programs by giving grants and job opportunities for groups to fight extremist religions. In the process, I met with Catholic bishops, Muslims and various religious leaders and was told about the Jewish community in Uganda.” During the upcoming meetand-greet, Sizomu will speak about his Ugandan village and its 100-year-old history, including how Jews were persecuted in the area. “It was his greatgrandfather who founded the Jewish community,” Cutler pointed out. Sizomu will tell the story of how his great-grandfather converted from Christianity to Judaism. He will also share about his own evolution of faith and how the community, which now numbers approximately 2,000 Jews, has grown through the years. Sizomu will also detail his

heart surgeries after he was born, the first when he was just 32 hours old, the second at 4 months old and the third at just over 2 years old. Emmett will have to continue seeing a cardiologist, but he has a healthy future ahead of him. After the Musselman family shared its story, Wayne Mutata of iTrain studios got the crowd warmed up and pumped up to walk, leading a chant of Emmett’s name to kick things off. Walkers had the option of walking a 1-mile route around the stadium or a 3-mile route that continued around Buchanan Park. Fulton Bank, Penn Medicine LGH and UPMC Lititz took home the top company team honors. Bernadette Taylor of the Fulton Bank team, Terrie Byrd of the Penn Medicine LGH team and Liz Eshbach of the UPMC Lititz team were honored as the top walkers. Funds raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to build longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in life-saving research. The Lancaster Heart Walk was presented by LGH and Fulton Bank, with additional support from the Gunterberg Charitable

Herb-Roasted Turkey Recipe For many people, the fourth Thursday of November simply would not be complete without turkey. Turkey can be cooked in various ways, but roasting might be the most popular method used by Thanksgiving celebrants. This recipe for Herb-Roasted Turkey from Yolanda Banks’ “Cooking for Your Man” (Broadway Books) produces a mouthwatering bird that is sure to make a lasting impression this Thanksgiving. Herb-Roasted Turkey (Serves 10) 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1/4 cup packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped, plus 4 whole sprigs 1 large sprig fresh rosemary, leaves chopped, plus 2 whole sprigs 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme, plus 4 whole sprigs 15 leaves fresh sage, chopped, plus 3 whole leaves 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for the turkey 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more for the turkey 1 15-pound turkey 1 lemon, quartered 8 shallots, peeled and halved 1 head garlic, cloves separated and peeled 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth or stock 2/3 cup dry white wine 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour Instructions: 1. In a small bowl, combine the butter, chopped parsley, chopped

rosemary, chopped thyme, chopped sage, salt, and pepper, and mix well. 2. Position a rack in the bottom third of the oven and preheat the oven to 450 F. Sprinkle the main cavity of the turkey with salt and pepper. Place the whole sprigs of parsley, rosemary, and thyme and the sage leaves into the cavity. Add the lemon, 4 shallot halves, and half of the garlic cloves. 3. Starting at the neck end, carefully slide a hand between the skin and the breast meat to loosen the skin. Spread 3 tablespoons of the herb butter over the breast meat under the skin. Tuck the wing tips under the skin, and tie the legs together to hold the shape. Season the turkey generously all over with salt and pepper. 4. Place the turkey on a wire rack set in a large roasting pan. Rub 4 tablespoons of the herb butter over the turkey. Roast about 30 minutes, until golden brown, and reduce the heat to 350 F. Baste the turkey with 1/2 cup of the broth. Cover only the breast area with a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Scatter the remaining shallots and garlic cloves in the pan around the turkey. 5. Continue to roast the turkey for about one and a half hours, basting with 1/2 cup of broth every 30 minutes. Remove the foil from the turkey breast. Continue to roast the turkey, basting with pan juices every 20 minutes for about one hour longer, until it is golden brown and a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers

165 F. Transfer the turkey to a platter and brush with 1 tablespoon of the herb butter. Tent it loosely with foil and let it rest for 20 minutes before carving. 6. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the shallots and garlic from the roasting pan to a plate. Transfer the pan juices to a medium bowl, then skim off and discard the fat. Set the pan over two burners on mediumhigh heat. Deglaze the pan with the wine and 1 cup of chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits. Bring the sauce to a boil, reduce the heat to medium, and cook until it is reduced by half, about 4 minutes. Pour the sauce into a large measuring glass. Add the degreased pan juices and broth, if necessary, to equal 3 cups of liquid. 7. Blend the flour into the remaining herb butter until combined. Pour the broth mixture into a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Gradually whisk in the herb-butter mixture. Add any accumulated juices from the turkey platter and boil until the gravy thickens enough to coat a spoon, whisking occasionally, about 6 minutes. Add the remaining shallots and garlic to the gravy and simmer for 1 minute. Taste and adjust the seasonings, if necessary. Serve the turkey with the gravy.

Diem explained that on Saturday, Jan. 11, those who placed the wreaths are asked to help retire them. Salisbury Township will recycle the wreaths. Diem began her efforts to bring Wreaths Across America to the area in January, when she began counting all the cemeteries where veterans were buried. “I enlisted friends and we went out to count cemeteries,” said Diem, who had originally estimated there might be 500 graves, far short of the actual 1,450. Next, she met with Gap VFW Post 7418 because she needed to list the organization on her Wreaths Across America application. “They were excited to join,” recalled Diem. “I told them, ‘This is our way of saying thank you,’ and that brought one man to tears.” Her first petition to Wreaths Across America’s home office in Maine was sent in early May. “It was returned because most people only petition for one cemetery,” said Diem, who then explained to the organization’s representatives that she did not feel it was fair to only place wreaths at one cemetery. After obtaining permission from each cemetery to place wreaths there, her application was granted on June 1. Diem set about fundraising to cover the cost of the wreaths, holding a paint party and basket bingo and asking local businesses for donations. She said she is especially thankful to Beiler Insurance Agency and Shivery Funeral Home for their help with her efforts. “Many of the people buried at Bellevue and the other 18 cemeteries don’t have family anymore, so we are their family,” said Diem. “ We really believe in our heritage here and that our veterans are important. It is a community event that is for our community to express how much the veterans mean to us.” There is a nominal cost to purchase a wreath to be placed on a veteran’s grave. Those wishing to sponsor a wreath may call Diem at 717-5871315 by Saturday, Nov. 30.

program, Bethany will help arrange for children to stay with a Christian host family while their parent addresses issues that need full attention. There is no charge, and host families are not paid. Family crises might include temporary financial stress, loss of housing or employment, illness, postpartum depression or teenage pregnancy. This is not foster care; rather, the parent maintains full custody of their child. All relationships are voluntary. Parents are encouraged to visit often and participate in decisions regarding their child’s care. SFFC reunites families as soon as possible. SFFC will arrange care for children from birth to 17 years old, but most children are under age 7. The average length of stay is about 45 days.

When possible, children stay with a host family nearest their parent and continue at their same school. SFFC volunteer families are extensively prescreened and receive training before hosting their first child. Families are referred to Bethany by schools, churches, hospitals, child protection and social service agencies, or a family may contact the agency directly. One of the agency’s success stories is Rebecca and her daughter, Blessing, who were moving to a new home when Rebecca experienced medical problems. She needed an MRI but had no family support to help care for her daughter. Rebecca visited a local resource center where she learned about SFCC. Rebecca was able to entrust her daughter to Jackie

as a volunteer host mom. Shortly after, Rebecca needed surgery for a tumor, and again she called Jackie. Jackie supported Rebecca by going with her to her oncologist appointments. When it was time for the surgery, another SFFC host family opened its home to Blessing until Rebecca recovered. Recently, Rebecca needed a third surgery. Without hesitation, Rebecca knew Blessing would receive love and care through SFFC. “I never had to worry,” Rebecca shared. “I knew someone was taking care of my daughter. These families have been a friend when I needed someone. I could focus on taking care of myself to get well.” Bethany Christian Services of Central Pennsylvania is located at 1681 Crown Ave., Suite 201, Lancaster. its upcoming holiday craft show on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Freedom Village Brandywine, 15 Freedom Blvd., Coatesville. “ We are always trying to help (veterans) when we can,” Bauer said. “Without having fosters in place, it’s really hard. At this point, we are helping them with physical needs.” Since Lucky Dawg does not have an adoption facility, it relies on fosters to care for cats and dogs while they are waiting to be permanently adopted. “We definitely need fosters,” said Bauer. “We have a lot of requests locally because of owner surrenders (due to) different situations. We need fosters locally.” In addition, Lucky Dawg has cats and dogs ready for adoption. One dog in need of a home is 3year-old Cinnamon, a female pit bull terrier mix. “She was found

as a stray in Chester and taken in by The Spay Club, who contacted us,” Bauer explained. “She basically knew nothing; she is a blank slate. She is going through an obedience program right now and is wonderful. She knows many commands. She likes other dogs and would make a great dog for anybody.” The organization is still seeking a permanent home for a special needs dog named Albert. Because his back legs are paralyzed, he uses a doggie wheelchair, also known as a wheelie cart. Albert, who is possibly a Labrador/hound mix, is currently being fostered by Bauer, with help from volunteers. Additionally, some cats rescued by the organization but not in foster care can be adopted from Pet Valu stores, including the ones at 144 Eagleview Blvd. in Lionville and 408 Commons

Drive in Parkesburg. In addition to fostering, other volunteer opportunities with Lucky Dawg include providing transportation from partner shelters to foster homes, known as “the freedom ride”; providing transportation to and from veterinarian appointments; assisting at meet-and-greet events; and volunteering as a kitten/cat cuddler at the PetValu locations. Bauer said she is very pleased with the success of the organization so far. “We are so busy,” she stated. “It is great, and I can’t be thankful enough.” For more information about the rescue, including how to foster, volunteer or adopt, readers may email LuckyDawgAR@gmail .com, visit www.luckydawg animalrescue.com or search for “Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue” on Facebook.

Dunfee said he is firmly committed to letting parents know the content before they come see a show. In the first production by Footlight, “Rumpelstiltskin,” the miller’s daughter is portrayed as boasting of her abilities to help bolster her social status. When the prince talks to her about this, he quotes from Proverbs 31, “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies

Commissioners Note Progress physical upgrades such as crosswalks, ADA ramps, and pedestrian landings, as well signal equipment upgrades for pedestrian push buttons, countdown signal heads, and lighting. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2021. In addition, the Chester County Planning Commission is working with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) and PennDOT on a three-year U.S. 202 Operations Analysis. The objective of this study is to make recommendations for operational improvements on U.S. 202 within the study areas from Skiles Boulevard north to the Route 100 exit. Currently, the DVRPC Office of Corridor Planning is modeling existing conditions and future scenarios for the study area. Operational improvements will be defined for this corridor upon evaluation of the different scenarios. PennDOT is also working on traffic signal improvements in Chester and Delaware counties. The construction began on Sept. 30 and is expected to end in fall 2022. PennDOT will upgrade signalization at six intersections along U.S. 202 between West Goshen and Concord townships and eight intersections along U.S. 1 between East Marlborough and Concord townships. In Thornbury and Westtown townships, intersection signalization improvements will take place on Route 926 (Street Road) between U.S. 202 and Dalmally Drive. The project will allow for improved traffic flow with upgraded adaptive traffic signals. This modernized equipment will be mounted on existing mast arms and controller cabinets, which will allow for varying traffic signal times based on real-time data. Designated intersections will also receive closed circuit television cameras to provide incident management, which will connect to the PennDOT Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC) in King of Prussia. Two intersections on U.S. 1 will have Bluetooth readers installed with capabilities to transmit traffic data to new dynamic messaging signs.

U.S. 202, one of Chester County’s major transportation arteries, has seen a lot of changes in recent years that have benefited people who live, work and visit the county, thanks to the work done by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Chester County commissioners recently highlighted the progress that has been made to date in light of the recent completion of the U.S. 202 Bridge Replacement over Amtrak. PennDOT rehabilitated and replaced the deck of two deteriorated bridges carrying U.S. 202 over Amtrak rail lines at the southern end of the U.S. 30 Interchange and replaced deteriorated pavement on ramps to and from the U.S. 30/Exton Bypass in East and West Whiteland townships. This work is the final stage of the U.S. 202-300 project. In Section 300, PennDOT widened 6.5 miles of U.S. 202 from four lanes to six lanes from just south of the Route 252 (Swedesford Road) Interchange to the U.S. 30 (Exton Bypass) Interchange in Tredyffrin and East Whiteland townships, Chester County, to improve travel, reduce congestion, and enhance safety. Mainline construction began in April 2011 and finished in August 2016. PennDOT added a third travel lane in each direction on U.S. 202 by widening into the former grass median and replacing six overhead bridges. PennDOT’s work on the U.S. 202 at Route 926 intersection is currently in preliminary design and includes improvements that will help reduce congestion and increase safety at the intersection of U.S. 202 and Route 926 through lane reconfigurations, striping, upgrades to the traffic signal, signal timing, and bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Roadway improvements for this intersection include installation of a southbound right-turn deceleration lane on U.S. 202 and an additional eastbound left-turn lane on Route 926, creating a double left-turn configuration along the eastbound approach onto northbound U.S. 202. Pedestrian and bicycle intersection improvements include
