Veterans Day observed in Atglen Borough

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States that honors American veterans of all wars. According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Day is always observed officially on Nov. 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.

The holiday, proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, originated as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, known at the time as “The Great War.” The war officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, at the Palace of Versailles in France.

However, the fighting actually ended seven months earlier when an armistice or truce was called between the Allied nations and Germany, which went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

Armistice Day became a federal holiday in 1938. Following World War II and the Korean War, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize American veterans of all wars.

Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who have died

in the service of their country, Veterans Day is set aside to show respect and honor all who have served or are still serving and to thank them for their service.

“Veterans Day” does not include an apostrophe but does include an “s” at the end of “veterans” because

veterans; it is a day for honoring all veterans.

“We should all pause to acknowledge the sacrifice of our veterans.”

Locally, a brief but meaningful Veterans Day ceremony was held in the Borough of Atglen led by Mayor Darren Hodorovich. The event took place at the World War II memorial in Atglen.

Day event included a moment of silence to honor fallen servicemen and servicewomen, the reciting of “The Pledge of Alliance” and a brief talk by Hodorovich.

“The 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month is our reminder that we should all pause to acknowledge the sacrifice of our veterans,” said Hodorovich.

“(We need to be reminded) time and time again what we owe our veterans and acknowledge what

Among the items featured at the Ten Thousand Villages Gift Shop at Oxford Presbyterian Church (OPC) this holiday season are three books by Cochranville author Iris Gray Dowling. Two of the books, “Let’s Open Our Eyes & Find a Luna Moth” and “Nature Stories #2” are new and were released this month. The third, “Days Gone By (Life in 1930s and 1940s),” which details the beginnings of Cochranville, was published earlier this year. This year, the shop at OPC will be open on Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition, the shop will be open on Friday, Dec. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m., during which time Dowling will be on hand offering signed copies of her books, which will remain available to purchase in the shop. She will also be available to speak with shoppers about the writing process.

Leacock bazaar - back with a twist

Although Leacock Presbyterian Church has held a Christmas bazaar for a number of years, the 2024 event will be a little different. “This year, we are inviting vendors into the space,” said organizer Angela Killian. In the past, any items for sale at the event were made or

donated by church members.

The bazaar returned in 2023 after a hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions. For 2024, crafters, bakers, and other vendors were offered tables in exchange for a donated amount.

The annual Leacock Presbyterian Church bazaar will be held at the church, 3181 Lincoln Highway

East, Paradise, on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include Christmas music, visits from Santa, food, and more.

The church will offer Christmas themed items for purchase, and vendors selling jewelry, knitted items, and local honey will be on-site. In addition, the church is holding a toy and book sale featuring gently used items for preschoolers through first-graders.

The plan is for Santa to be present to meet visitors and take part in photo opportunities throughout the event.

The church is known for its tradition of selling plated cookies and bonbons at the event. “We will have artisan baked breads for sale,” said Killian. Food items for breakfast, along with coffee, will be available to eat in or for takeout, as will lunch items, which will include homemade

Community invited to donate shoebox gifts

Gateway Church, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg, is a designated drop-off location for Operation Christmas Child (OCC), an annual effort that provides shoeboxes filled with gifts to children in need worldwide. OCC is a program of Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian relief organization.

The community is invited to participate by gathering small toys, personal care items and school supplies and placing them in a shoebox during National Collection Week. The week began on Nov. 18 and will run through Monday, Nov. 25. Boxes can be dropped off at

Gateway Church at the following times: Wednesday, Nov. 20, from noon to 2 p.m.; Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 24, from 1 to 3 p.m.; and Nov. 25 from 9 to 11 a.m.

According to Killian, the event is more than a fundraiser for the church. “We want the community to have a holiday experience,” she noted. All funds raised by the sale will benefit church projects. More information about the church may be found at www.leacockpres.org.

details the moth’s life cycle. “I added other pages about different kinds of moths, and I drew all of the drawings myself, even the cover,” said Dowling. “It’s a picture book really, but it offers very good information.”

“Nature Stories #2” is a sequel to “Nature Stories #1,” which she wrote about 10 years ago. “This is more of a reading book (rather than a picture book), with a lot of stories about nature,” said Dowling. Both books are designed to encourage children to learn, experience and enjoy nature. “They are children’s books because there are pictures and children can learn from them,” she noted. “They are great for homeschooling. The luna book has bigger pictures and should be studied with a parent. ‘Nature Stories’ would definitely be readable for (students) in upper grades or a good reader in third or fourth grade.”

Dowling uses stories from her personal experiences when writing books. “’Nature Stories’ has a lot of good stories about growing up … things that happened in the yard or the small farm where I grew up,” she noted.

Dowling has written more than 17 books, including “History of Churches and Worship Groups in the Oxford Area” and “Mission Stories from Upper Oxford Township,” which details true stories from people in the Upper Oxford and Cochranville areas who served as missionaries.

“(Writing) keeps me busy and keeps my mind occupied. I look forward to the day (when I am writing). It’s part of my life,” she shared.

Dowling, who has spent more than 65 years as an

educator, author and play director, added that she is not done writing books. “I have another one in the back of my mind. I have a story to tell and a message to give, and that is what I am doing in this stage of my life,” she said, adding that she prefers reading physical copies of books, including her own, rather than reading on a tablet or device. “I want to see it and feel it and turn the pages.”

has been done to protect our way of life around the world.”

He mentioned that events are held nationally to acknowledge veterans.

“Over the weekend I was privileged to see my son in Pittsburgh and attend a University of Pitt football game in which all of the branches were honored during several different ceremonies on the field,” he shared. “It seemed to me,

the first one to stand each and every time were the vets themselves.”

He also cited another example of acknowledging a veteran. “My sister posted a picture of a 97-year-old veteran of World War II who stormed the beaches of Normandy,” he stated. “Over the summer, she was able to attend a ceremony at Normandy and collect sand to give to him. Again, acknowledgment.”

Hodorovich explained that he grew up in the family of an Air Force veteran. “Growing up as a military brat, it does give you a unique insight into the level of service and dedication,” he stated. “My father was Air Force. His job title was Soviet intelligence analyst. Needless to say, we were told growing up he could not tell us what he did. It wasn’t until much later in life that I realized this level of sacrifice and dedication takes a toll.”

attendees were invited to lay flowers on the memorial. Trumpeter Dwight Weaver played “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

“On behalf of the Borough of Atglen and the Office of the Mayor, we thank all of you (for attending), and we thank all of our vets for your service,” Hodorovich added.

The World War II memorial is located at 406 Main St. in Atglen, at the intersection of Main Street and Route 372. The memorial’s inscription reads, “Erected in grateful recognition of the men and women of Atglen.”

Holiday toy drive underway

In preparation for the Christmas on Main event in Parkesburg, the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC), in conjunction with local businesses, is sponsoring its third annual holiday toy drive. Area residents are asked to drop off new, unwrapped toys during business hours at Flowers in Bloom, 213 Main St., Parkesburg. Toys will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 2.

PAC member Tina O’Connor noted residents also have the option to donate a toy by visiting giving trees that will be placed later this month at Spring House Spirits, 217 Main St., Parkesburg, and the Grocery Outlet, 110 W. First Ave., Parkesburg. “A tree will be put up at Spring House

Spirits and the Grocery Outlet. Each ornament will include a suggestion for a toy or a child’s need,” noted O’Connor. “The community can take an ornament off the tree, purchase that item, and return the unwrapped item to Flowers in Bloom by Dec. 2.”

O’Connor also encourages community members to purchase a “Shop Local, Shop Happy” tote bag at Flowers in Bloom, which can be used while shopping. “The tote bag includes coupons to local businesses,” she said. “We are encouraging the Parkesburg community to do all of their (holiday) shopping locally.”

The tote bags were printed by Creations From the Basement. Proceeds from sales will be used to purchase additional toys

for the holiday toy drive.

Donated toys will be distributed to families in need at the Christmas on Main Event, set for Saturday, Dec. 7, from 2 to 6 p.m. A tree lighting will be featured at 6 p.m. The community tree will remain lit throughout the holiday season.

“We will be decorating the community Christmas tree on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. The tree is located on Main Street,” O’Connor noted. “The community is welcome to help us decorate.”

For more information about the toy drive and Christmas on Main, visit www.facebook.com /PAC19365 or email PAC19365@gmail.com. More information is also available at the “Shop Local Shop Happy - Christmas on Main” Facebook event page.

Nominations sought for heater giveaway

An individual or family in need in Pennsylvania will receive a new heating system this winter during the Gift of Warmth Annual Heater Giveaway sponsored by Andreas Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning.

Each winter, millions of people in the United States face life challenges and cannot afford to heat their homes or replace failing heating systems. Not having an operational heating system poses a significant safety concern during the extreme cold.

Community members are invited to nominate someone to win a heater. People may write a short essay or

make a short video nominating anyone who is experiencing tough financial times, an illness in the family and multiple medical bills, or a job loss. A senior on a fixed income, a U.S. veteran, or a single parent caring for children are also eligible. A nominee must be a legal adult, a Pennsylvania resident, and a homeowner. People may not nominate themselves. A winner will be selected and notified on or before Monday, Dec. 9. For more information and to submit a nomination by Sunday, Dec. 1, visit https://andreasplumbing .com/gift-of-warmth/. Details are also available by calling 610-377-5261.
