Parkesburg To Host Christmas On Main BY FRANCINE FULTON
he Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC) will present Christmas on Main, featuring holiday open houses at local businesses, craft vendors, an appearance by Santa, food trucks, Christmas caroling and a tree-lighting ceremony, on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 2 to 7 p.m. in downtown Parkesburg. Last year’s event was held from noon to 5 p.m., but organizers moved the time back for the 2021 event. “We wanted to move it to (create) more of a holiday spirit,” said PAC member Jenny Alexander, one of the event organizers. “Last year, we ended before it was even dark.” Activities will take place on Main Street, where there will be food trucks and roaming Christmas carolers. Visitors will be able to enjoy a bonfire and hot cocoa on Main Street, which will be sponsored by the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission. All of the participating shops on Main Street will host local craft vendors and artisans at their locations. “Businesses will donate space in their stores for small vendors who don’t have their own building,” said Alexander. “(They will offer) all handmade items.” Participating businesses will also offer in-store holiday specials and bargains. Photos with Santa will be available at Teresa Marie Photography, 224 Main St., Parkesburg. Children will be able to write letters to Santa at the Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St., Parkesburg. Letters to Santa that children write at home can dropped off at the library or at Rocco & Anna’s Ristorante Italiano, 302 Main St., Parkesburg, which will also host visits with Santa.

“It’s a safe place where people can reach out and share their feelings and be heard and not worry about being judged by the person on the other end,” said Cailey Crusemire, program supervisor, when describing the newly established Chester County Teen Talk Line. “We can talk about anything they want to talk about.” Teen Talk Line, targeting 12- to 18-year-olds, became available in April to take calls and texts to support young people who are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, sad, isolated or confused. Callers can remain anonymous, and all calls are confidential. In November, the hours expanded, and the line is now open seven days a week from 3 to 7 p.m. See Teen Talk Line pg 3

A tree-lighting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Main Street and Strasburg Road. Homestead Studios, a new business located at 100 Main St., Parkesburg, has donated the live 12-foot tree. The community tree will remain lit through the holiday season. Last year, the tree was decorated by PAC members. This year, the public is being asked to help. “On Nov. 28 at 12:30 p.m., we are inviting the community to help decorate the tree (with ornaments that are) wildlife friendly,” said Alexander. “We will have all kinds of birdseed ornaments, pinecones with peanut butter rolled in birdseed and (garland made of) popcorn and orange slices. The entire tree will be edible to wildlife.” In conjunction with Christmas on Main, Memories on Main, 322 Main St., Parkesburg, will distribute donated toys to people in need. People are asked to drop new, unwrapped toys at the shop during business hours through Thursday, Dec. 2. “We will have a wrapping party with some local businesses and put (the gifts) under the tree in our shop and neighboring shops,” explained Randy Litwin, who owns Memories on Main with his wife, Jen. “On Dec. 4, during Christmas on Main, any family that needs a toy can come in and grab one from under the tree.” He said that wrapped toys will be labeled for gender and age group. No registration or proof of income is required. Adults may collect one toy per child. “We wanted to make sure we (served) those families who needed extra help,” said Randy. Leftover toys will be given to local toy drives. For more information about Christmas on Main, visit www.face book.com/PAC19365.

take calls. Hoogenhuis hopes to recruit teen volunteers in Chester County as well. She is also looking for a host school where student volunteers would take calls after school in a designated area. “We have been contacting the schools, trying to set up appointments and sending out digital flyers,” said Hoogenhuis. “Now that our hours have expanded, we’re hoping to get additional materials - bracelets, clings, stickers and tear pads (that list the Teen Talk Line numbers) - and drop off materials in person and maybe hang up

“Our volume is predominantly in text,” reported Kerri Hoogenhuis, assistant director. “Occasionally a teen will reach out by phone, but that is rare.” Teen Talk Line staff members would like to see the number of callers increase. “So many don’t know about it, but there is such a need for teen services,” said Crusemire. “Once they do know, it’s also making sure that it’s not a scary place for them to reach out.” “We just want to let them know that it is a place just to talk - not when you are in crisis,” said Hoogenhuis. “People hesitate to reach out because they think their problem is not big enough. But they can reach out about anything, even to talk about their day.” “A lot of (the calls and texts) seem to be about friend problems, people at school, problems with parents and feeling lonely or isolated,” Crusemire added. “Some of them just want to vent about (feeling) alone. Some people reach out to say hello.” Calls or texts from teens who are in crisis are referred to the Valley Creek Crisis Center, which responds to mental health emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Teen Talk Line is contracted through the Chester County Office of Mental Health. The line is staffed by certified peer specialists from Access Services, a nonprofit organization that runs other mental health programs, including a Teen Talk Line in Montgomery County, which also uses teen volunteers to

Coatesville Center for Community Health’s Kathryn Spurlock (left), Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox (center) and GRANDFamily Connections of Chester County’s Deborah Willett
When families go through hard times, two of the many local organizations that offer help are the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office (CCSO) and GRANDFamily Connections of Chester County, a network of people who step in to raise children. In November, Child Safety and Protection Month, they are collaborating to provide the following safety tips and resources. Caregivers can schedule an appointment for a free child car seat inspection with the CCSO on Tuesdays from 8 to 11 a.m. at the parking garage of the Justice Center, 201 W. Market St., West Chester. To make
an appointment, call 610344-6139. People may drop unused prescription medications at the collection box in the lobby of the CCSO in the Justice Center. Caregivers should prevent young children and teens from gaining access to their old drugs accidentally or deliberately. If an adult or a child is being harmed in the home, an adult should call 911. Children who see a loved one being hurt in their home experience trauma. For peer support or to join a GRANDFamily support group, contact Deborah Willett at 610-246-2261 or dwillettadvocacy@gmail.com.
