A holiday fundraiser, featuring a sale of arts and crafts handmade by local artisans, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Freedom Village at Brandywine, 15 Freedom Blvd., Coatesville. All proceeds will benefit Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. Adoptable cats and kittens will be present at the event. Admission is free and open to the public. The auditorium will be filled with tables of handcrafted items created by volunteers, adopters, transporters and community supporters of the rescue, which provides a safe haven for local animals in need through foster homes. Among the crafts offered for sale will be handknit and crocheted items, handstitched blankets, dog and cat items, holiday decor, handmade jewelry, tote bags, gift baskets, custom-made tapestry accent pillows, custom-painted signs and

metal art made from horseshoes, such as miniature Christmas trees. In addition, there will be a silent auction and an opportunity to win gift baskets. Participants do not have to be present to win. Photos of and information about the crafts, silent auction items and gift baskets can be found on Facebook by searching for “Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue.” Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue Inc. is a nonprofit, no-kill, all-volunteer organization. The goal is to rescue homeless, abused or unwanted dogs and cats in the local vicinity. It was officially founded on Jan. 1 of this year. “We are brand new, and we have already adopted out over 80 dogs and approximately 40 cats,” said organization founder Mary Bauer. “We are all foster-based. All of our animals are learning how to live in a home before being adopted out.” See Animal Rescue pg 8

The annual Leacock Presbyterian Church Treats ‘N Treasures Christmas Bazaar has been held for many years, but each holiday season, organizer Loretta McClarigan likes to mix things up by changing the offerings at the event. For 2018, McClarigan and fellow organizers Lois Snader and Carol Shearer have added a Fashion Corner, a Disney table, and more to the seasonal sale. This year’s bazaar will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Some special treats such as homemade fudge will be priced per package rather than per pound. There will also be a special area for nut-free cookies for people who have nut allergies. The selection of holiday cookies is likely to include some special favorites that can be hard to find. “We have one baker (who) makes 35 kinds of cookies and dozens and dozens of them,” said Mertz, who estimated that there will be about 100 dozen cookies sold. “Some of the special things our people bake are family recipes that have been there a long time.” For those who cannot wait to get their cookies home to try, there will be a “Broken Cookie Café,” where people can

Mailed outside our circulation area for $36.00 a year.

The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) will host the 28th annual greens sale on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, 6 miles south of Quarryville on Route 222. SLCHS members and other volunteers will assemble live greens and other items into a variety of shapes for decorating. Centerpieces, boxwood trees, grave blankets, and wreaths will be offered in a variety of sizes, styles, and colors. Some grave blankets will be decorated with patriotic colors for placement on veterans’ final resting places. Shoppers may also purchase bags of leftover greens to create their own decorations. Additionally, some customization of items will be available. Each year, the greens are harvested after Thanksgiving from trees and shrubs growing at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, which is located across the road from the archives building and is owned by the SLCHS, as well as from community members’ properties. “Our neighbors here are really good,” commented SLCHS president Stan White.

“With all the wet weather this year, the greens should be in great shape.” The sale committee is careful about what greens are used in the arrangements, opting to use evergreens that do not turn brown too quickly. “If the boxwood trees are watered from time to time, some people have them last until February,” said committee member Linda White. Volunteers are welcome to assist in creating the arrangements in the lower level of the archives building on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Nov. 28, 29, and 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch and snacks will be provided. The sale committee noted that people who are not SLCHS members regularly help with the sale. “They like the fact that we’re trying to preserve local heritage,” explained sale committee chair Peg Wurst. Cash and checks will be accepted for payment at the sale. The proceeds from the event, as well as the sale of several book titles, 2019 calendars illustrated with pencil drawings of local landscapes, and notecards, will be used to sustain the SLCHS. The sale is the society’s biggest fundraiser, now that the House and History Tour was discontinued two years ago.

relax with a cup of coffee or wassail and enjoy a cookie or two that are not quite perfect enough to be included in the Cookie Walk. Another event designed to spread the spirit of the season will be the Friday, Dec. 14, appearance of Charlie Zahm in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary. St. Christopher’s became the home for the Friends Folk Club’s concerts last year, beginning with a Christmas concert by Zahm. “He was phenomenal,” Mertz said, describing the performance as Christmasbased Celtic music. “His voice is just absolutely amazing. His musicianship is incredible.” The performance will be in the sanctuary, which has a hearing loop for those who wear hearing aids. For concertgoers who do not wear hearing aids but would like hearing assistance, special headsets are available. Tickets will be available at the door. In addition, there will be a collection of nonperishable foods for the Lighthouse Youth Center, as well as a collection of gently used shoes for victims of natural disasters. “If (attendees) want to donate to those two good causes, they can do that too. We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to do some good,” Mertz said. St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church is located at 116 Lancaster Pike, Oxford. Black Rock Plans Hymn Sing, Escape Room Escape rooms have become popular in recent years. In the activity, small groups of people have a set amount of time to find clues and solve puzzles in order to escape a locked room. Black Rock Retreat, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, made its first foray into the phenomenon last year. “We were looking for more winter program activities,” said program assistant Barbra Keeler. “This is another opportunity to get people on campus and use our facilities.” Summer camp program director Ben Herr helped to design last year’s escape room, which attracted approximately 25 groups during its one-month run. Herr spearheaded the latest installation with assistance from program team member Nicklas Frede. Black Rock is a Christian camping and retreat center, so the duo set the escape room aboard the ship the prophet Jonah sailed on in an attempt to avoid God’s command to go to Ninevah. Groups of four to eight people will be locked in the basement of the crafts cottage and given an hour to find Jonah, exiting through the locked back door if they are successful. The room is wheelchair-accessible. Herr has created escape rooms for his friends, and he follows a specific process to design a successful event. “We come up with

fun puzzles, then try to take a bunch of ideas and organize them into a straight line,” he said. “We use visual clues, physical clues, and logic. It’s hands-on, which is a lot of the appeal.” During their time on Jonah’s ship, participants should pick up everything in the room that is not a heavy object - such as several trunks - in search of clues. They may be required to assemble tools to retrieve clues or find puzzle solutions on disparate items. “It’s fairly challenging, but a staffer will provide hints, and we don’t limit them to three like other escape rooms,” Herr remarked. “It’s a great group activity.” “If you’re looking for something for your family to do during the holidays, it’s a fun activity for (people of) a range of ages,” added Keeler. Reservations are required to enter the escape room, and there is a cost per person. Sessions are offered at 6 and 8 p.m. on weekdays and at 2, 4, 6, and 8 p.m. on weekends through Friday, April 12. Other times may be available upon request. Folks may schedule their visit at www.blackrock retreat.com or by calling Herr at 717-529-3368. While groups are on campus for the escape room, they may also arrange to participate in other activities. During the winter and spring months, Black Rock offers laser tag,

Black Rock Retreat summer camp program director Ben Herr (left) and program team member Nicklas Frede have created a biblically themed escape room, which will be open through April 12. A Christmas hymn sing will be held on Dec. 9. glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, and hiking, as well as a nature center and a ropes course. Keeler suggested that groups may opt to enter the escape room before or after the annual Christmas hymn sing, which will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9, in the lobby of the Maranatha Retreat Center. Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m. Bob Meck will lead the singing of Christmas hymns and carols from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m., and the Crescendo Community Choir will perform during breaks in the singing. “We moved (the hymn sing) to the afternoon in hopes that more people will be willing or

able to come out for it,” Keeler said, explaining that the organizers wanted to accommodate people who do not like to drive after dark. No reservations are needed to attend the hymn sing. A freewill offering will be accepted. Attendees may stay for dinner at 5 p.m. A cost has been set for the meal, and reservations are required by Wednesday, Dec. 5, by calling 800-858-9299 or visiting www.blackrockretreat.com/hymn sing.

21 Holiday Celebration

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition holiday presentation is planned. “We have a performer coming to perform ‘A Christmas Carol,’” said library director Catherine O’Sullivan, who added that the actor, Christopher Davis, had brought his version of the classic tale of Christmas transformation to the library many years ago. “He was very popular, and everyone enjoyed him, so we asked him back,” said O’Sullivan. She noted that some cats rescued by the organization but not in foster care can be adopted from Pet Valu stores, including the ones at 144 Eagleview Blvd. in Lionville and 408 Commons Drive, Parkesburg. Bauer noted that the first dog rescued by the organization was in December of 2017, when a stray dog was found roaming the streets of Elverson. The dog, Sir Winston, was eventually adopted by the Bauers. “He now lives in front of our fireplace,” Bauer said with a smile. That adoption spurred the founding of the animal rescue. Some dogs and cats come to the organization from families that cannot keep their pets, while others are rescued from dire situations. “A quarter of our animals are owner surrenders,” Bauer noted. “We get puppy mill (dogs), and we also pull from animal control.” Every effort is made to find the owners of stray dogs. “If there is a lost dog, we put them on hold and scan them for a chip,” explained Bauer. “If it doesn’t work out and the owners are not found, we will go ahead and take the dog as long as we have a foster available.” Bauer said the organization’s biggest need is for foster families for both cats and dogs. “Foster families must complete an application and we check their veterinarian references, and we will come and do some teaching in their home as soon as the application is cleared,” she explained. “We provide the food, the vet care and the crate. We want (the dogs and cats) to learn things so it’s easier for them to become adopted.” One of the organization’s success stories is Rose, at dog that was found as a stray after being hit by a car and turned over to Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. The rescue funded medical care over several months, which included the amputation of a leg, but Rose blossomed in her foster family’s care and they recently adopted her. Bauer said that the rescue is entirely dependent on its volunteers and foster families. “I have an amazing group of volunteers. My husband, Mark, trains dogs, so he works with the dogs that come in,” said Bauer. “We feel really lucky. We are blessed to do it.” For more information about the rescue, including how to foster, volunteer or adopt, readers may email LuckyDawgAR@gmail .com. The students, in kindergarten through eighth grade, were recognized for their winning entries in

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition -

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Families are invited to include a visit to the Stillwaters Presbyterian Church live Nativity in their holiday schedule. Set for Friday, Dec. 7, and Saturday, Dec. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each evening, the event is intended to reinforce the true meaning of the Christmas season, while allowing visitors to enjoy a moving spiritual experience. “It’s a good break to remember the meaning of the season,” pastor Tony Stephens said. “Come one, come all. It’s a wonderful evening.” Each year, Stillwaters Presbyterian Church presents the story of the Nativity in a way that puts events into context for visitors. More than a stable scene, the presentation has 10 scenes that tell the story from the Annunciation through the birth of Christ and, later, the visitation of the wise

men. Visitors, in groups with a guide, will follow a well-marked, handicapped-accessible path lined with luminarias. The first stop will be the only location where a performer speaks, with a portrayal of Isaiah the prophet reading in English and Hebrew, announcing that Christ shall come. At the following stops, animals and silent actors will portray the roles from the Christmas story, with the goal of making visitors feel like they are looking in on events as they happened. At one point, there will be a setup of the entire town of Bethlehem, with people working at trades just as they would have done 2,000 years ago. In all, there will be 35 performers and many live animals participating in the live Nativity. A brochure will help explain each stop. The final scene will provide a

view of the importance of Christ’s birth, with a reminder of the cross and an empty tomb. All events are set up outdoors, and organizers note that the silence of the scenes fosters a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. The event is suitable for people of all ages, and people are free to go along the path at their own pace. After viewing the scenes, visitors may stop in the church for homemade cookies and hot chocolate. Live seasonal music will be provided by West Fallowfield Christian School students on Dec. 7 and by students from Wilmington Christian School on Dec. 8. The church’s holiday observances will continue on Christmas Eve, Monday, Dec. 24, when Stillwaters Presbyterian will hold a special candlelight Christmas service at 5:30 p.m. “It’s a service that’s very kid-friendly. It’s for the whole family,” Stephens said Stillwaters Presbyterian Church is located at 643 Coatesville Road (Route 841),

West Grove. For more information, readers may call 610-8692009 or visit www.stillwaters family.com or www.facebook.com/ stillwatersfamily. In the event of inclement weather, the websites will list cancellation information. Pictured on front: Stillwaters Presbyterian Church in West Grove will present a live Nativity on Dec. 7 and 8. The presentation will include 10 scenes that illustrate the Christmas story.

It feels wrong when parents outlive their children, and that grief is compounded when the cause of death is drugs or alcohol. Jacquelyn Grimsey knows that firsthand, as she lost her 26-year-old daughter, Samantha Simpers, on Sept. 3, 2016, to a drug overdose. Grimsey is now raising her two grandchildren, and she is organizing A Glimmer of Hope and a Celebration of Life, an event to honor the memories of loved ones who have died due to overdose or suicide. “We need to talk about the disease (of addiction),” Grimsey explained. “We should not be ashamed, but we should band together as a community. We’ll bring hope from those working on their recovery every day.” Grimsey is a member of Mothers Doing Battle, a support group for women whose children have a drug or alcohol addiction. Of the 44 members, eight have lost children to the disease. Two of the women will share during the celebration, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. at

Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. Additionally, two people who have overcome their addictions will share their stories. “Everybody has a story. It’s all the same, but it’s not,” Grimsey remarked. “(Even if we’re not abusing substances), we all become addicts because that’s all we think about (when our loved ones are addicted).” Grimsey hopes that by talking about addiction and suicide, the shame will dissipate, making it easier for folks to get help. Celebrate Recovery (CR) is one organization that aims to help people caught in addiction, and members of the CR group that meets at Wesley will be part of the celebration. CR leaders Mike Powers and Chuck Taylor will share their stories. “We both come from a background of addiction, but we’re here today,” Powers said. Other CR participants will be on hand to talk with attendees as well. “Part of recovery is to serve,” added CR leader Dave Eckardt. “We’re coming alongside this program because we believe in this.” To personalize the celebration, Grimsey invites folks to submit the names and photos of their loved ones - family members or friends - who have died as a result of overdose or suicide for recognition during the event. The photos, along with names and dates of birth and death, should be emailed to grimsey383@gmail.com by Friday, Nov. 30. The photos will be displayed, and each beloved’s name will be read during the celebration. “It’s an honor for us to recognize their

We want to offer hope in the good Lord to get through these struggles.” Grimsey noted that while the service is being held in December, it is not a Christmas event. “But it’s a good time of year to have it,” she said. “Hopefully it will bring comfort to people who have lost loved ones.” In addition to the loved ones of people with addictions, A Glimmer of Hope and a Celebration of Life is open to people who are dealing with addictions themselves. A time of fellowship will be held following the service, and refreshments will be served. For more information about the event, folks may email Grimsey or call Powers at 484-880-3864.
