It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Outdoor Christmas lights are appearing in area neighborhoods, radio stations are playing holiday music and live Christmas trees can be seen on the rooftops of cars as
they make their way to homes to be decorated.
Locally, members of the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission got into the spirit by decorating the gazebo in Minch Park on Nov. 27 with holiday lights, greens and wreaths, as well as a Christmas tree.
Also to usher in the holiday season, special events and activities have been planned by area organizations.
The Christiana Fire Company will escort Santa through Atglen Borough on Friday, Dec. 9, starting at 6 p.m. In addition to delivering candy canes, Santa and his helpers will collect nonperishable food items for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.
The National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum, 50 S. First Ave., Coatesville, will present its annual holiday open house on Dec. 9 from 5 to 9 p.m. The event will include live holiday music by the Lukens Band, a train display and refreshments. Children will be able to visit with Santa Claus and make holiday tree ornaments to take home.
In addition to the open house, attendees will be able to stroll the grounds of the Lukens National Historic District, where luminarias will light the way between each of the historic houses. Tour guides will be stationed at both the 1889 Graystone Mansion and nearby Terracina. For more information, visit www.steelmuseum.org.
Limeville United Methodist Church (UMC), 5783 Limeville Road, Gap, will present a free Kids’ Christmas Event on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. Children will be able to visit with Santa, hear the Christmas story, make crafts and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. Santa will be on hand and available for photos.

The community is invited to bring a little taste of home to men and women in the miliary who are serving overseas this holiday season as part of the Parkesburg Lions Club’s Adopt a Soldier Project. Those who receive the boxes, which will be mailed to the unit in time for Christmas, are all residents of Pennsylvania.
Information about the servicemen
and women was provided to the club by a Pennsylvania State Battalion command officer for the Army National Guard and Air National Guard.
“We were given the names of 207 Pennsylvania soldiers in this unit,” said project organizer Danielle Salada. “Their names cannot be released due to security reasons, and they are in a remote area away from any services such as a PX (retail store).”

Tina Cosgrove Edgell cannot remember a time when her parents, James and Kathy Cosgrove, did not own the Revere Tavern in Paradise. The Cosgroves purchased the property at 3063 Lincoln Highway with a man named Buzz Myers when Tina was just a child nearly 60 years ago. “It was just this bar and one dining room,” recalled Tina. “When Buzz wanted out, my dad bought his part.” See Paradise Eatery

Adopt A Soldier
To adopt a soldier, community members are asked to fill a box and to donate the $16.25 required for postage. “The box needed is a Priority Mail medium-size flat-rate box,” explained Salada. “You can get the box from the post office.”
Those who are unable to donate the money for shipping may still fill a box with items that are needed such as snacks, toiletries, puzzle books, magazines, board games, handheld video games, decks of cards and DVDs. Those who donate boxes are also welcome to add their own personal notes. “Several people received thank you notes back last year,” Salada noted.
The boxes should not be sealed because they need to be inspect for items that are restricted, including aerosol cans, solid stick deodorants, fireworks, lighters, matches or alcohol.
“Last year we sent out more
than 200 boxes, and I hope to reach that goal this year,” said Salada.
This year, students in Robin McKenna’s class at Octorara Elementary School are creating handmade cards and letters to be included in the boxes. McKenna is also a member of the Lions Club.
“Seven of the soldiers we were informed about are from a certain fire department unit and we have students from the Octorara Homeland Security and Protective Services Program preparing their boxes,” Salada added.
Boxes will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 12. Those who would like to donate boxes are asked to contact Salada at dsalada@jdeck maninc.com or via the Lions Club Facebook page to arrange a drop-off time. For more information, search for “Parkesburg Lions Club - New and Improved” on Facebook.

In the early 1970s, an employee named Betty Hottenstein was looking forward to her son returning from serving in Vietnam, and she asked the Cosgroves if he could work in the restaurant. “Ray Hottenstein came to work for my parents and helped to develop the business,” said Tina, who noted that the expansion included adding the banquet room and, in the 1990s, the hotel and theater located behind the restaurant, along with the suites located next door. Ray eventually went on to own the Olde Greenfield Inn.

(we were open) was a walk down memory lane,” said Tina. “That’s where you realize the impact you made on the community,” she added. “This wasn’t just a restaurant; it was part of these families’ histories.”
Many patrons were first introduced to the restaurant when they attended a special event. “We had some remarkable weddings here,” said Tina.
“We had so many fire company banquets,” said assistant general manager Kim Nichols, who listed fire departments
including Gordonville, Paradise, Lafayette, Christiana, and Eden among the departments that held yearly events at the venue. Tina recalled that in 1986 when a fire threatened the front of the building, the Eden Fire Company, located in Manheim Township, saved the structure.
Weathering COVID-19 restrictions was hard on the business, but the current labor shortage was also a detriment. Tina’s father stopped working daily in 2018. Her mother stopped coming in during the COVID-19 shutdown, but she continues to be involved with the hotel from home.
Tina’s brother Jim Cosgrove was the restaurant’s general manager, and Tina has worked there full time for the last several years. Along the way, her sister, Patty Watson; her own daughter; and her niece and nephew and other family members all worked there as well. According to Tina, everyone just filled in where they were needed. According to Kim, humility was the prevailing attitude. “People that worked here never said, ‘That’s not my job,’” she pointed out. “We all did whatever it took … dishwashing, serving, cooking.”
Both Tina and Kim would like to see the building become a new restaurant. “This building is a part of the community,” said Kim. “It’s a gorgeous, very sturdy, and well-takencare-of building. It would be wonderful for someone to see the potential and have the drive to start a restaurant.”
Although the Revere Tavern is closed, the Best Western Plus Revere Inn and Suites remains open, and updates may still be found by searching for “Revere Tavern” on Facebook.

From The Attic: The Art Of Weaving
Stories of historical interest from Historical Society of Salisbury Township, submitted byLeonaBaker, president
Weaving is really just an interlacing of threads. The longitudinal threads running down the fabric are the warp, and the lateral threads running across the width of the fabric are called the weft. A loom weaves these threads together to create fabric. Looms hold the warp threads in place while the weft threads are woven through them. The term jacquard is the way the pattern is woven, not the specific pattern itself.
Because a pattern is woven into the fabric, each yarn can be solution-dyed, giving it more fade resistance than topically-dyed yarns. In contrast, patterns that are stamped or printed on the surface of the fabric are especially prone to fading. Today, jacquard is the weaving method of choice for most who buy fabric, be it cotton, polyester, wool, silk or acrylic. This was not always so.
For centuries, patterned fabrics, called brocades, were so hard to make that they were found in only the wealthiest homes, most often as clothing or tapestries. Symbols of status and wealth, they were woven by hand - a long, tedious and backbreaking work usually done by men who labored long hours to produce a few feet a day. Around the turn of the 19th century, one of these laborers was Joseph-Marie Jacquard.
Trying to develop a less labor-intensive method of producing fabric, Jacquard’s dream was to efficiently create fabric with those same artistic designs. After years of adaptive experimentation and redesigning other earlier inventions, he created the Jacquard loom.
Resembling the much later invented player piano, Jacquard’s loom featured designed wooden cards - holes
punched with the desired woven pattern. When his special foot pedal attached to the loom was depressed, it elevated a long row of a set of warp threads in a predesigned pattern. This meant that the pattern would be woven directly into the fabric. Initially called code weaving, it changed the way patterned fabrics were created forever. This innovative idea would later be adapted and used in computer technology.
The Historical Society of Salisbury Township has a double bed-sized woven coverlet in its collection. It is from the Spring Garden Hotel, presently a private home located on Old Philadelphia Pike in Spring Garden. While the society members do not have an exact date of its origin, they believe it is from the 1850s when the hotel was a fixture in the community.
Church Plans Movie Night, Hymn Sing
Pequea Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, has planned two events, starting with an indoor movie night on Friday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m. The church will show “The Santa Clause” and provide free snacks, including popcorn, and hot chocolate.
An old-fashioned hymn sing and a presentation from a special speaker will take
place on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. Requests will be taken for hymns. The speaker, the Rev. Jeff Byerly, came to faith in Jesus at Pequea Church and has dedicated the past 30 years to pastoral ministry. This event is a part of the church’s continuing celebration of its 145th anniversary.

Richie’s Wish
the memory and legacy of Richie, a child who spent 1,390 days in foster care before being adopted at age 14. He died in 2018 at the age of 23 from complications of cystic fibrosis. In his multiple moves from one foster home to another, Richie would
frompg 2
often lose the few possessions he had accumulated and rarely had access to ageappropriate toys. To help rectify this situation, during the last year of his life, he helped create the Angel Tree program to provide these toys to children in foster care who
did not have them. Some children have requested new clothes as well. Monetary donations are also welcome.
