Atglen Boy Scouts Hold Court Of Honor BY FRANCINE FULTON

oy Scout Troop 20 in Atglen, composed of boys who reside in the Pequea Valley and Octorara Area school districts, held its autumn Court of Honor on Oct. 5, during which Scouts were recognized for their achievements. The ceremony was held in the outdoor pavilion behind the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen, where the troop meets. During the Court of Honor, 18 Scouts were awarded 105 merit badges. Through the merit badge program, Scouts have the opportunity to learn about various sports, crafts, trades and more. The merit badge subject areas awarded at the recent Court of Honor included Animation, Electronics, Inventing and Wood Carving, as well as some of the Eagle Scout required merit badges like Swimming, Citizenship in the Nation and Citizenship in the World. “Two Scouts made incredible use of their COVID-19 lock-down time and earned some record numbers of merit badges,” noted Christine Zink, a member of the troop’s parent committee. These Scouts are Sawyer Johnson, a first-year Scout,

merit badge weekend at Camp Mack in Newmanstown. Additionally, the Scouts have kept up their Adopt-A-Highway cleanup commitment and they took part in the annual Scouting for Food drive. “This year, we hung door hangers (asking for donations) on one Saturday and the following Saturday we picked up what (canned goods they) left out for us,” noted Zink. “We (collected) three beds of pickup trucks full of food.” The food was donated to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. The troop is looking forward to a snow tubing outing in December and to a full year of activities in 2021. The Scouts are currently selling cookbooks to help defray the costs of their events. Anyone interested in purchasing the book, which contains recipes submitted by Scout members’ families, should email zink.scouts@gmail.com. The troop meets in the pavilion behind Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Boys ages 11 to 18 are welcome to join, and the troop welcomes visitors at its regular meetings. In the event of inclement weather, the troop meets via Zoom.

who earned 12 merit badges, and Bennett Miller, who earned 11 merit badges. In addition, four Scouts advanced in rank. Luke DeCosta and Jonah Zink advanced to the rank of Tenderfoot, the second rank in Scouting. Tommy Hart and Noah Zink advanced to the rank of Life Scout. These two Scouts can now begin work on earning their Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank in Scouting. Despite the pandemic, members of Troop 20 had a busy summer. The troop found ways to not only continue regular meetings via Zoom but also to participate in a few camping trips. “The troop normally goes to Camp Rodney in Maryland but back in June we made the decision not go,” said Zink. “The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster and parent committee worked to create a pseudo summer camp at Hickory Run. We did an extended weekend, where the Scouts were able to camp, earn merit badges and work on rank requirements and skills.” The troop also kept busy with weekend camping trips at Jim Landis Woodland Preserve and Rickett’s Glen State Park and a

Foundation for its work in educating the community on the dangers of carbon monoxide. The foundation is named for the late Carly Marie Imbierowicz who, along with her friend, Daulton “Daulty” Pointek, passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning on the way home from a movie in November 2014. A broken exhaust pipe allowed deadly carbon monoxide gas to enter the car through the passenger air vents. Both were students at Octorara Area Junior-Senior High School. The foundation was started by Carly’s parents, Donna and Matt Imbierowicz. Donna, along with their son, Andy, recently traveled to Harrisburg to meet with Dinniman and to accept a citation and a copy of the resolution.

The Christiana Lions Club will once again hold a Christmas in Christiana celebration, but this year’s event has been scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic. While the annual celebration will not include a holiday lighting contest and visits with Santa at the Christiana Freight Station, it will feature an appearance by Santa Claus, who will parade through the borough in his sleigh on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. During his rounds, Santa will be accompanied by members of the Christiana Fire Company, who will give out candy canes to children along the route. In addition, local residents are invited to donate nonperishable food items for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. “When we go through town, (people should) bring canned goods out to the sleigh,” said Lions member Jim Groff. “We will have fire trucks in front of us and behind us to light up the street.” He noted that food donations will also be placed in the fire vehicles if necessary. “This is something different

to give back to the community and to help the food cupboard,” Groff added. “Their shelves are bare.” Items currently needed by the food cupboard include canned fruit and vegetables, boxed potatoes, sauerkraut, oatmeal, peanut butter, canned tuna and chicken, baked beans, canned pasta sauce, boxed pasta and rice sides, hearty soups like Dinty More beef stew and canned pasta meals like SpaghettiOs. “For our normal event we usually have companies sponsor the decorating contest and give prize (money),” said Groff, noting that the day also included a visit to senior residents at Harrison House now known as Newport Meadows. “(Instead), we will go past the nursing home, and (the residents) can sit in the lobby and wave when we go past.” In a letter posted on the Christiana Lions Club Facebook page, the Christmas in Christiana committee stated that it reluctantly decided to go with a new format this year. “It is always worth the effort

Martin Earns Recognition The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recently honored Sen. Scott Martin as Legislator of the Year for his work to ensure young people facing longterm illness and injury can continue their studies. Martin was the author of Act 18 of 2019, which created a new grant program to make telepresence technology available to more students so they can continue to participate in classroom activities through the use of mobile robotic devices that resemble an electronic tablet mounted on a Segway unit. The program ensures that young people who face challenging health circumstances do not miss out on valuable instructional time with teachers and learning opportunities with their classmates. Poiema. The Greek word pronounced “poy-A-muh” appears in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus in the Christian Bible. “We are (God’s) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,” reads the English Standard Version (ESV) of Ephesians 2:10. Poiema, which the ESV translates as “workmanship,” can also mean “masterpiece, artwork, handiwork, or craftsmanship.” “They’re metaphors that really resound with an artist,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “That verse is pivotal because … your worth isn’t from what you’ve made but what the Creator has made. But you have to do something with it.” Miller, who lives with his wife and son in Akron and is the resident teaching artist at Strasburg-Heisler Library, was influenced by his grandparents’ participation in folk art. As a youth, he was active in

music performance and theater. While earning a bachelor’s degree in Bible at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), Miller wrestled with reconciling his artistic gifts with his faith. “I’m a Christian and an artist, and I don’t know how to do both,” Miller told his adviser. The outcome of that conversation involved a year of study and the construction of a theological framework for Miller’s gifts. Over the next two decades, as Miller and his family moved to Austria, Virginia, Texas, and back to Pennsylvania, he earned master’s degrees in biblical studies and Christian education, and he developed the dream of a venue where artists could build community while deepening their faith in Christ. In October 2019, Miller met with a group of visual artists to invite them to participate in creating Poiema Visual Arts. Although the pandemic has slowed down the process somewhat, the team drafted a statement of faith focusing on

Child Care Funds Still Available As many families struggle to pay for child care during COVID-19, the Chester County commissioners urge families to apply for financial relief. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, Dec. 30. The Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), which administers Chester County’s child care grant program, indicated that as of Nov. 18, 639 families representing 1,135 children had been approved for child care subsidies. A total of 140 child care providers from across the county were also receiving

funds to cover the substantial protection costs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The commissioners announced the $10 million in child care subsidies in October for Chester County families requiring child care services. They also announced $5 million for child care providers, believing that they may see an increase in child care enrollments and require assistance purchasing additional personal protective equipment, providing training, and making needed changes to facilities.

The grant programs are funded from CARES Act funding acquired by Chester County government. The commissioners have appointed the CCIU to administer both grant programs because of the organization’s experience in administration of the commonwealth’s Child Care Subsidy program. The Chester County Department of Human Services is coordinating the program on behalf of the county. Guidelines for eligibility include annual income limits, residency in Chester County,

and reasons for the child care need. The grant process is open to families with children from birth to age 12. Children with disabilities may be eligible through age 21. Funds for both the $10 million child care subsidy grant program and the $5 million child care provider grant program are available up to Wednesday, Dec. 30, and will be awarded while funds last. More information and the application for child care subsidies can be found at www.cciu.org/covid-childcare or by calling the CCIU at 484753-4305 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other tips include the following: never use a stove or oven to heat a home; never run generators in an enclosed space, such as a basement or garage; be sure that all fuelburning appliances and engines, like space heaters, furnaces, charcoal grills, fireplaces, portable generators, water heaters and wood-burning stoves, are properly vented; clean chimneys and flues every year; open the garage door before starting the car; and never leave cars running with the garage door closed. Eligible Pennsylvania veterans and their beneficiaries who face an unexpected financial need for the necessities of life such as food, shelter, fuel and clothing can find help through the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ (DMVA) Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA) program. The VTA can help veterans and their beneficiaries stay safe and healthy during unforeseen circumstances like loss of income, a sickness, or a disability. Eligible veterans or their beneficiaries can qualify for an amount not to exceed $1,600 in a 12-month period. Eligibility requirements include a person who served in the armed forces of the United States and was honorably

discharged, died in service or was killed in action, or suffered a serviceconnected disability. The current COVID-19 pandemic, a fire, or a flood are examples of something unforeseen that can cause a financial hardship and qualify people for the VTA. To apply, veterans should contact the county veterans affairs director in the county where they reside. For more information about the program’s criteria, eligibility and needed documentation, readers may visit www.dmva.pa.gov, click on Veterans Affairs and look for Veterans Temporary Assistance under Programs and Services.
