Turkey Bowl Attracts Runners Of All Ages

Safety Tips For Electric Devices The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has created a new micromobility device safety webpage in response to concerns fire officials have about fires caused by lithiumion batteries that power electric bikes and electric scooters (e-bikes and e-scooters). The webpage features information about why e-bikes and e-scooters catch fire, what some jurisdictions are doing to better regulate that risk, and what people can do to stay safe if they use, store, or charge ebikes or e-scooters. To help prevent fires, individuals should only purchase and use devices, batteries, and charging equipment that are listed by a nationally recognized testing lab and labeled accordingly. Only the battery and the charger that were designed for and came with the device should be used. Charging the device should

not be continued after the battery is fully charged. Ebikes, e-scooters, and batteries should be stored away from exit doors and anything that can get hot or catch fire. Owners should discontinue using the e-bike or e-scooter if they notice any problems with the battery, including an unusual odor, a change in color, too much heat, a change in shape, leaking, smoking, or not keeping a charge. Lithiumion batteries should not be put in the trash and should be taken to a battery recycling location or disposed of using another appropriate method as directed by the local waste department. Devices should only be repaired by a qualified professional. For more safety information about e-bikes and escooters and to download the free safety tip sheet, visit www.nfpa.org/ebikes.

Among the participants of this year’s Turkey Bowl were Chuck and Dot Baker, residents of Tel Hai Retirement Community.

The 31st annual Turkey Bowl was held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. The event included a 5K race and a 1-mile children’s fun run. “We had a beautiful morning for our annual Turkey Bowl race. I think this year’s weather was even nicer than last year, which helped to encourage more runners,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director. Participants in the event were of various ages, backgrounds and locations. “I believe our youngest registered participant this year was about 2 years old and the oldest was 80,” noted Gregory. “We had great showing from Honey Brook and surrounding towns, as well and many families that have made (participating in the Turkey Bowl) a tradition. We also had many from out of state from all over the country ... visiting family for the holidays. We had many new runners this year.” He noted that about 40 volunteers helped at the event, and 26 local businesses sponsored or donated to the race. “Many of our sponsors and donors also either participated in the race or volunteered,” Gregory noted. Second Wind Race Timing provided the chip timing for the event. “This year, we chipped both the 5K race and the 1-mile children’s fun run,” said Gregory. “I believe the chil-

dren enjoy starting under the big blue arch. Our Turkey Mascot was here again, and the kids enjoyed taking photos with him. Santa Claus was busy up North this year and could not make it.” The top overall male winner was Noah Taylor, 19, of Mohnton, with a time of 17 minutes, 8 seconds. “This was his second year in a row to take the top spot, his third time total,” Gregory noted. The top overall female winner was Aubrey Ressler, 14, of New Holland, with a time of 20:44. Noah Taylor (left photo) was the overall male winner of “We had 352 finishers in the the 5K and Aubrey Ressler (right photo) was the overall 5K race (and) 77 finishers in female winner. the 1-mile kids’ fun run. They all did a great job in their race, even the really young ones, who pushed through to the finish line,” Gregory said. “It was good to see some of the parents run alongside the young ones encouraging them on.” The top overall male finisher in the 1-mile run was Elias McConaghay, 11, with a time of 6:41. Elias and his family, who hail from New York, have been running in the race together for several years. Hannah Yoder, 11, a resident of Indiana, was the top overall female finisher with a time of 7:20. This was her first year taking part in the event. A complete list of Turkey Bowl finishers, including their individual times, and a listing of sponsors and donors is available at www.telhaicamp.org /events/turkey-bowl-run.

Helping Children To Serve Others

R091102

Volunteering is a widespread activity, with participants coming from all walks of life and various age groups. Parents and guardians may want to introduce their children to volunteerism, and even very young children can participate. Dr. Joseph F. Hagan Jr., a clinical professor of pediatrics at Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, said that helping others during the toddler and preschool years helps to shape a child’s sense of morality. Adults should focus on finding the right activity to match a child’s age. For example, a 3- or 4-year-old can fill bags or boxes with donated food or help gather blankets and towels to

donate to an animal rescue. However, a toddler or preschooler may not have the stamina to complete a 5K walk. Volunteerism does not even have to be carried out in the traditional sense of working with an established charity. A youngster can pick flowers and deliver them to an elderly neighbor. A preschooler can invite a child playing alone to come play together with him or her. A toddler who loves sorting items can help sort recycling items at home and watch a parent deliver them to the recycling center. Another way to engage kids in volunteer work is to match their interests with the tasks. Many kids cannot get enough of animals, so they may want to help an animal organization or be involved with a conservation group. A child can collect change to “adopt” an endangered species. Kids also can visit a children’s hospital and deliver gifts to youngsters battling illnesses. In such situations, children may be more engaged if they can help others their own age. Children can begin volunteering at a young age, and finding the right fit can inspire a lifetime of giving back.

Activities Set For Prekindergartners

The Octorara Area School District has announced two activities for children ages 3 to 5 who are not yet in kindergarten. Children may attend Play and Learn sessions on Monday, Jan. 9, from 2 to 3 p.m. or Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday Story Time and Open Gym activities will take place on Dec. 17 and Jan. 28 from 10 to 11 a.m. The activities would take place at Octorara Primary

Learning Center, 228 Highland Road, Suite 1, Atglen, and will include stories, music and movement. Information about kindergarten readiness will be provided to caregivers. Registration is required. Anti-littering Youth Contest Posted Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will sponsor the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through grade six who complete a designated project specific to their grade level. Students can participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschools, Scout troops, 4H clubs, environmental clubs, or other organized groups. The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program is a way for kids to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and to inspire others to care for their communities through art, words, or video. In response to Pennsylvania’s new anti-littering education campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, the theme is “Show Us How Every Litter Bit Matters to You.” Projects include a poster for children in kindergarten

through grade four and an essay or video for children in grades five and six. The deadline to participate is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. Two entries will be selected as winners in each grade level. The winner and the runner-up will receive a gift card as a prize. All participants will receive certificates. Winners will be announced in April in time for Earth Day celebrations. The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program was created with funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. For more information, downloadable promotional posters, and an online entry form, visit www.keeppabeautiful.org and select Awards under Grants & Awards. Gospel Express To Headline Valentine Banquet BY ANN MEAD ASH

Nelson Coblentz, who, along with his wife, Sarah, answered God’s call to form Gospel Express in 1984, has some words of advice for married couples. “A happy marriage is a union of two

forgivers,” said Nelson, who is in his 49th year of wedded bliss with Sarah. “The whole theme of forgiveness is one of the biggest things in a marriage relationship.” With a chuckle, he added, “Keep forgiving and give flowers.” Nelson and Sarah will sing

and share their advice at the eighth annual Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) Valentine Banquet to be held at Faith Mennonite High School, 5085 Woodland Drive, Kinzers, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a fel-

lowship meal, catered by Shady Maple, will begin at 6:30 p.m. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions. Gospel Express has focused

on prison services and crusades, evangelism, revival meetings, discipleship materials, and more in the United States and Canada, as well as internationally. Nelson and Sarah and their five children traveled and lived for many years in a 40-foot bus. “How

do you keep a marriage alive on and off the road?” asked Nelson. “You are doing marriage living in a glass house, which means you’re visible to everybody and you are under the microscope.” Nelson and Sarah have negotiated the See Banquet pg 6

In these events I take the guys through their identity in Christ, where do the lies come from that we buy into, and how we untangle whose lies. I call it, “declawing the lies of the enemy.” I also take the guys through the Big 5 Man-Killers that destroy every man (lack of purpose, lack of respect, anger, lust, and shame), and I do this using the Big 5 African animals tying each one of those struggles to each one of the animals. It’s a powerful way to hold their attention and give them the tools they need to defeat the enemy.

years successfully, bringing their adult children and now grandchildren into the ministry. “We have been able to minister three generationally for the first time stateside and internationally,” said Nelson. “That has been a dream.” Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of RTCM, noted that the Coblentz team is a good fit for the banquet because of the couple’s devotion to each other and experience with prison ministry. “(Gospel Express) helps people in prison, and a lot of people in prison suffer from trauma and addiction,” said Santiago, who added that the organization evangelizes and disciples inmates in the U.S. and Canada. “We are trying to evangelize and disciple broken people,” explained Santiago. Currently, RTCM is graduating about a dozen students a year and mounting a capital campaign with the goal of purchasing the former Strasburg Elementary School. “The

old elementary school building would be a good fit for us, and it would allow us to expand and add a second phase to the program,” said Santiago. Goals for the second phase, which would offer 12 beds, are to provide rooms students could rent while working locally. RTCM would continue to provide meals, transportation, and a supportive environment. “We could house 40 students and up to 10 live-in staff members,” said Santiago, who noted that the goal is to raise $1.3 million to purchase the building and a total of $1.6 million with renovations included. Seating at the banquet will be limited. Table sponsorships are available. Readers who would like to purchase tickets or sponsor a table may call or text 717304-3291 or email office manager@restartministry .org. W hile some items like sweet potatoes were wrapped in foil and placed directly on the fire, most of the food was cooked using buddy burners, which the youths made with the help of 4-H volunteer Susan Johnson. Also known as a hobo stove, a buddy burner is a portable stove made from a large aluminum can. Using can openers, the youths

made holes in the sides of the cans to allow the smoke to escape. They filled smaller cans with corrugated cardboard and paraffin wax and placed these under the larger cans as a heat source. “We recycled large coffee cans. One of our 4-H alumni owns a diner and donated the cans,” noted Reith. “They could use the buddy burners, which they made, (to cook

standards from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. An “ASTM D4236” label indicates the materials associated with an art toy have been reviewed and deemed safe by a toxicologist. More information about toy label requirements can be found at www.cpsc.gov. The AAP advises that electric toys should only be given to children if they include the UL label, which indicates that the toy has been certified by the global safety certification company UL. The AAP notes that toys that are loud, shoot objects into the air or contain small pieces pose a threat to children. Toys that are too loud can damage children’s hearing, and projectiles can increase the risk of eye injuries or choking. Toys with small pieces also pose a choking risk to young children who may try to put the pieces into their mouths. Consumers who are uncertain about the safety of a given toy, even after reading its label, should err on the side of caution and only give toys they are confident will not pose a safety risk. Even toys that may seem safe could be dangerous to kids who might otherwise seem old enough. For example, the AAP advises against giving children under age 12 hobby kits and chemistry sets. That is because such kits may contain dangerous chemicals that even preadolescents are not old enough to handle safely.

Shopping for gifts for children makes many shoppers nostalgic for their own childhoods as few adults can forget the joy of finding the perfect gift under the tree on Christmas morning. Re-creating that magic for a youngster can be as joyous for gift givers as it is for kids, but shoppers should keep several tips in mind to ensure they give toys that are as safe as they are fun. When buying for a grandchild, niece, or nephew, shoppers should first ask the child’s parent or guardian for suggestions. These people will know which types of toys their children like, and they will also know each child’s maturity level. Some kids may not be mature enough to play with otherwise age-appropriate toys, while others may be mature beyond their years and enjoy more complex toys than their age would suggest. Toy labels are good sources of information, but shoppers must know what to look for. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that toy labels include information about ageappropriateness (such as “Ages 3 and Up”) as well as directions regarding how to use the toy. If the instructions seem a bit complex for the child the item will be for, look for something else. Children’s toy labels also include information that consumers may not be familiar with. For example, toys labeled “ASTM F963” meet the latest safety

So many thoughtful gifts for Your Christmas Shopping!

Ruby, who was rescued by Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR), is looking for her forever home. She is young and had a hard life. Her eye was infected and had to be removed in an extensive eye surgery but she has since recovered and is healing well. In July, Ruby delivered six kittens in an animal hoarding home and was surrendered to a high-kill shelter the next day. At the shelter, Ruby and her entire family were immediately timestamped for euthanasia. LDAR was able to rescue her and her family less than 24 hours before their time ran out. Through the stress of change and illness, Ruby managed to care for her kittens and even accepted an orphaned kitten as one of her own. Her kittens have since been adopted, and it is now her turn to find her forever family. Through all of these struggles, she remained trusting, gentle and affectionate. Ruby is a very young cat who loves sleeping next to a warm human and is friendly
