Participants in the Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat have run through stormy weather, rain, fog and even snow flurries, but this year’s weather on Nov. 23 was ideal. “We had a beautiful morning for our 32nd annual Turkey Bowl race. The weather was beautiful this year, probably the best I’ve ever seen, which helped to encourage more runners to sign up,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director. “We had (more than 600) participants this year - up quite a bit from last year’s 480.” He noted that those who attended the event, which featured a 5K race and a 1-mile children’s fun run, included new people as well as those who attend the event annually. “We are grateful to all of those who have made this a family tradition. Community Wilson to oversee YMCA’s members strategy and growth The YMCA of Greater Her experience in health rally for Richie Brandywine also includes has equity

Last February, Richie Metzler, then 5 years old, of New Providence was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumor. A few days later, his mother, Desiree, created a Facebook group to make it easier for her to answer questions from concerned friends and family members, as well as to provide updates on Richie’s treatment. “Prayers for Richie” has since grown to comprise hundreds of members who are cheering Richie on as he battles cancer. Shortly after his diagnosis, Richie, who recently turned 6 years old, began a series of chemotherapy and stem cell treatments at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey. He remained at the hospital several months as he received treatment. Richie returned home for a few weeks in August before traveling back to Hershey for a final round of highdose chemotherapy. Due to health complications that resulted from the treatments, Richie required a specialized series of proton radiation doses. On Oct. 13, Richie was moved to the Roberts Proton Therapy Center located at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The facility is the only hospital in the area that offers the unique procedure, and Richie was moved quickly See “Prayers for Richie” pg 5

On Nov. 7, Desiree created a post in Prayers for Richie to update its members on the development in her son’s treatment. In the post, Desiree asked Richie’s supporters to help her with an idea to cheer Richie up by helping him have his best Christmas yet. Since the diagnosis in February, he has spent almost the entire year receiving treatment, and he will remain in the hospital until after the holidays, so Desiree asked members of the group to send Richie a Christmas card. “The cards are to cheer him up and show him people are still praying for him and rooting for him to get better,” Desiree said. Less than a week after she made the post, Christmas cards addressed to Richie began to pour into the Metzlers’ mailbox. Richie’s family members, friends and classmates from the Wee Friends Preschool in Quarryville expressed their support for him via cards and notes. More than 100 Christmas cards later, Desiree has lost count of the letters they’ve received, and Richie is beginning to run out of space on the windows of his room to hang them. “I was amazed by it,” Desiree said. “Richie wants to open every single one, so we read them to him and clip them up on the window. He gets a big smile on his face every time.” Richie loves collecting Hot Wheels and building

Chester County Government recently announced the results of its most recent Chester County Quality of Life Survey, a survey of citizen priorities and service satisfaction conducted every five years. The surveys help form the basis of the Chester County Commissioners’ Strategic Plan goals. Results of the latest survey, conducted by West Chester University’s Center for Social and Economic Policy Research, are based on a random sample of 1,703 responses, representing all areas of Chester County. The survey showed that 94% of residents believe Chester County is an excellent or good place to live and raise a family, and that maintaining the quality of water, preserving open space, and managing population growth remain top areas of importance. The survey reported that nine out of 10 people rate the county as an excellent or good place to obtain a good education, and 83% describe Chester County as an excellent or good place to participate in community affairs and activities. The percentage of residents indicating that Chester County is an excellent place to find a job increased from 21% in 2018 to 30% in 2023. When it comes to services provided by Chester County Government, the areas of highest importance to survey respondents include emergency services and the 911 system, open space preservation, county parks and trails, voter services and flood and stormwater planning and control. Regarding the county’s performance in providing services, 70% or greater positive (excellent or good) responses were garnered for maintaining county parks and trails, ensuring public safety, managing the election process, and providing park programs. Seventy-six percent of survey respondents rated the county government’s management of the election process as excellent or good. In addition, the survey addressed the performance of Chester County Government employees. Of all See Citizen survey pg 8

Of all See Citizen survey pg 8

residents surveyed in 2023, 44% indicated that they had contact with county employees in the past 12 months. Those respondents gave county employes high marks for courteousness, knowledge, and responsiveness, with 83% rating staff members as excellent or good in their overall performance. As it relates to the pandemic, this year’s survey results showed that 68% of respondents rated the county as excellent or good in its response to epidemics or public health hazards. The areas where Chester County did not rate as highly include planning for residential and commercial growth and development, and ensuring the availabil-

ity of affordable housing. For the first time, this year’s survey included a section regarding the importance of child care and family support as it relates to workforce, businesses, and economy. Thirty-five percent indicated that they were currently responsible for the care of a child, an aging parent, or another family member. The top services beneficial to support these caregivers were identified as flexible work hours, flexible paid time off, livable wages, and paid parental leave. Every year, after festivities wind down on Christmas Day, many people experience a feeling of melancholy. Once all the wrapping paper has been ripped off the presents, it’s not uncommon for revelers to catch the post-Christmas blues as they begin to think of the bleak winter months that must be endured before the next holiday. But most people don’t know that this is a uniquely modern problem - some centuries ago, Christmas Day

marked the beginning of the fun. The traditional English Christmas was known as Yuletide, a custom involving 12 days of partying that kicked off on Dec. 25 every year. Christmas Day itself was primarily for religious observance. The holiday was followed by large gatherings of friends and family members who shared meals, played games, swapped stories and danced together. Gift giving did not have the same importance as it does

Resident Welfare Funds at each of the DMVA’s six veterans’ homes help to keep the residents active and healthy by providing activities and entertainment. Donations are made online or through private donations by mail. Residents of the commonwealth may also donate to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Lebanon County and maintained by the DMVA, the recently refurbished Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial honors veterans of all eras from the Revolutionary War forward. Donations are accepted online or by mail to help fund the maintenance and repair of the memorial. When an online donation is made, donors may choose to enter honoree information, and a plaque will be displayed on the Virtual Donor Wall. Online plaques will show that donations have been made in honor of, in memory of, or on behalf of someone. Monetary donations to the aforementioned programs can be made by individuals, corporations, and companies. Pennsylvanians looking for a patriotic way to donate during the holiday season are reminded that they can give to programs that support the commonwealth’s more than 700,000 veterans, service members, and their families. These nine tax-deductible programs are managed by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). The Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF) issues grants to statewide charitable organizations that assist veterans, veterans service organizations, and county directors of veterans affairs to help veterans in need of shelter and necessities of living. The VTF also issues temporary assistance grants to individual veterans who have qualifying financial needs. The grants are funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily donate when applying for or renewing their driver’s license or photo identification card and renewing a motor vehicle registration, from proceeds generated by the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates, and by those who donate online or by mail. The Military Family Relief Assistance Program provides financial assistance in the form of grants to eligible Pennsylvania service members and their eligible family members who have an immediate financial need based on circumstances beyond their control. This program is made possible by donations from taxpayers who designate all

in modern times, but rather it involved the exchange of small, sentimental presents on New Year’s Day. After nearly two weeks, Yuletide celebrations usually peaked on Twelfth Night with a large dinner party or a ball. Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, offers members of the community a chance to see how Christmas was celebrated in the 18th century with its annual Yuletide Tours. This year, the self-guided tours will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; and Friday, Dec. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. During each tour, guests are invited to explore the halls of Rock Ford’s historic mansion, which belonged to Revolutionary War general Edward Hand. The home will be transformed into a historically accurate re-creation of how it likely appeared when Hand dwelled there. Volunteers who are dressed in period-accurate clothing will be located throughout the rooms to answer guests’ questions, and meals that were popular in Colonial times will be prepared in the kitchen. In the hallways, performers will showcase traditional waltzes and other dances from the era. Harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin and violinist Mercy Martin will provide live music during each tour. Guests may visit the mansion’s study to hear

a recorded monologue of Hand played by an actor. In the recording, Hand reflects on Christmas Day in 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River beside George Washington to turn the tide of the Revolutionary War. Two decades later, Hand ponders the luxuries that were made attainable

by the sacrifices of others. The Yuletide Tours are historically informed by Historic Rock Ford’s curator, Sarah Alberico, who has researched old newspapers and archives to learn what was customary in the 18th century. “The Yuletide Tours are an opportunity take a little

breath after the frantic holiday,” said Sam Slaymaker, Historic Rock Ford’s director. “Enjoy the sights and sounds of a time that was more reflective and more about being with friends and family.” To purchase tickets for the Yuletide Tours, visit https:// rockford.yapsody.com.
