Continuing a call for assistance and protection of women, the Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) led a winter holiday project, Lights On for the Holidays, to benefit the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC). Joined by women’s service sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha-Iota Tau Omega and WSFS, members of the CCSO provided donations to help provide electricity at safe houses and offices of DVCCC.
Throughout the year, one role of deputies at the CCSO is to serve Protection From Abuse orders, which are intended to provide protective relief by prohibiting abusers from contacting survivors and their children. Sometimes, survivors are forced to leave their homes for safety and end up at an emergency shelter or transitional home. Although men are sometimes abused, the majority of survivors are women.
Dolly Wideman-Scott, CEO of DVCCC, noted that survivors often face a lifethreatening dilemma: stay with the abuser or become homeless. They may not have the money or established credit to pay for mortgage or rent, utilities, food and other basic necessities.
DVCCC offers an emergency shelter, transitional housing and independent housing. For more information, call
DVCCC’s 24-hour, free hotline at 610-431-1430. Anyone in immediate danger should call or text 911.

Breaking With Tradition
Because New Year’s Day will fall on a Sunday in 2023, the Kinzer Fire Company, 3521 Lincoln Highway, Kinzers, will hold its annual New Year’s Day dinner on New Year’s Eve.
“Technically, we’re having two dinners in one year,” noted organizer Dwight Groff, referring to the Jan. 1, 2022, event as the first of the two. The 41st dinner will be held at the fire station from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31. Both individual takeout meals and sit-down, family-style meals will be available.
According to Groff, fire company volunteers will plan to serve about 2,000 meals
consisting of fresh pork, homemade sauerkraut, buttered carrots, mashed potatoes, gravy, applesauce, chowchow, and assorted desserts.
Those who choose to eat in the fire hall may enjoy coffee, tea, iced tea, and lemonade beverages with their meal.
Kinzer Fire Company prepares its own sauerkraut onsite each year, and the cabbages for the upcoming meal were chopped and put to bed to ferment on Oct. 10.
Sauerkraut from the station will be available by the pound through Friday, Dec. 30. Those wishing to purchase sauerkraut may do so by appointment by calling 717-442-4170.
Pork and sauerkraut meals will be sold at a per-person price
on a first-come firstserved basis, with discounts for children age 4 through 12. Children age 3 and under may eat for free. Takeout delivery is available within 5 miles of the station. Those wishing to purchase takeout may call 717442-4121, beginning at 10 a.m., to order. Details about the meal may be found by searching for “Kinzer Fire Company” on Facebook. More information about the fire company may be found at www.kinzer fire.com.
Johnson To Head County Department
After serving for 10 years as the second in command of the Department of Drug & Alcohol Services (D&A), Jamie Johnson was named as the new director by the Chester County commissioners named
upon the retirement of Vince Brown. Brown worked in D&A for 32 years, the last 10 as its director. Commissioner Josh Maxwell noted that Johnson was involved in launching Chester County’s
Law Enforcement Treatment Initiative earlier in 2022.
As the director of D&A, Johnson will verify that programs and case management meet state and federal regulations, oversee spending, and ensure that the department continues to serve the needs of Chester County residents. D&A supports numerous events each year, including the Chester County Color 5K, which raises funds for the Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE)
program; Recovery Month; International Overdose Awareness Day; Alcohol Awareness Month; and naloxone training.
Johnson has resided in the Borough of West Chester for over 35 years and is also an animal advocate.
Anyone who is struggling with a substance use disorder or who has a loved one with such a disorder may call the D&A information and referral helpline at 866-286-3767 or Get Help Now, a 24/7 hotline, at 800-662-4357.

Commissioners Present Agriculture Awards
The Chester County commissioners and the Chester County Agricultural Development Council (Ag Council) recently presented two annual agriculture awards.
The recipient of the Chester County Farmer of the Year award was Jamie Hicks, owner-operator of Hicks IV, a crop farming business on over 5,000 leased acres in Chester County and the surrounding region. Hicks also farms land for high-profile organizations, including Longwood Gardens and land trusts. His customers range from equestrians with a few horses to largescale dairies. Hicks is known in the agriculture community for his entrepreneurial drive, sustainable farming practices, and innovative partnerships with research institutions such as Stroud Water Research Center.
Hicks sees promise in farmers driving agribusiness, the intersection of agriculture and business - from production and processing to distribution. He believes the way forward is with new markets and product opportunities and partnering with nontraditional customers interested in environmentally friendly packaging materials, like online retailers.
According to Hicks, Chester County is a great place to farm because of the easy access to ports and large consumer markets, including New York, Philadelphia, and
Washington, D.C. Hicks also noted that his business is geographically close to some of its clients, and the local area’s mushroom industry provides resources such as fertilizer.
Hicks recommends that new farmers look at least 10 years into the future and anticipate how agricultural products can best serve emerging business trends. Working with more experienced farmers first is also crucial, he said.
Hicks was nominated for the Farmer of the Year Award by the Chester County Agricultural Development Council.

Hosting A New Year’s Brunch
New Year’s Day unofficially marks the end of the holiday season. After the turkey and trimmings of Thanksgiving and the gifts galore of Christmas and Chanukah, New Year’s presents one final chance to toast to fun and fortune.
Chances are good that after an evening of ringing in the New Year and dancing until dawn, most people sleep in and catch up on a few extra hours sleep on Jan. 1. Breakfast may come and go before tired revelers are ready to greet the day. That is what makes brunch so popular on New Year’s Day.
Brunch is a meal eaten in the late morning or early afternoon - generally between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. - and consists of a blend of breakfast and lunch foods. Historical evidence suggests that brunch originated in the British upper classes in the late 19th century. Many upper-class people gave servants partial or full days off on Sundays. Staff would set out buffet spreads in the morning before leaving, enabling homeowners to graze among breakfast and lunch items.
It may be challenging to compete with the excitement of New Year’s Eve, but a New Year’s Day brunch can be just
as memorable, especially when planning is a priority.
Hosts can make things easier by keeping the guest list on the small side. In turn, there will be less food required and perhaps less mess to clean up afterward.
Brunch combines the best of breakfast and lunch. Guests will expect some of the standards, including omelets, French toast, bagels, deli meats, and salads. If a host wants to get creative, they can change up these recipes in subtle ways, such as serving French toast stick dippers with a warm maple caramel dipping sauce or bite-size quiches baked in small ramekins.
Coffee, teas, and hot chocolate are great at brunch. Hosts should set up a nice beverage bar and be sure to include a variety of drinks.
Soft music and nice conversation may be all that is needed to entertain during a New Year’s brunch. Another lowkey option is to queue up a light-hearted movie or play a relatively easy trivia game.
New Year’s brunches can close the door on another successful holiday season with a relaxing afternoon spent in the company of family and friends.

The family was recognized for positively promoting local agriculture and serving as community ambassadors on the industry’s behalf. The Bailys have played an integral role in hosting the Chester Valley Dairy 4-H club and leasing cows to young club members who would not otherwise be able to participate. The family is also deeply involved in helping to host
the livestock portions of several area county fairs and festivals, which are often the first time children meet farmers and see livestock up close. Meredith, who oversees school field trips to the farm, said she especially loves working with the younger children because they may have read about farm animals but may never have seen them in person. The pandemic provided even more opportunities for the Baily family to make a difference, especially when its Chester Valley Dairy 4-H club members brought special bovine visitors to nearby Pocopson Home residents in the summer of 2020.
