“Throughout our history, Schreiber has always tried to provide services to some of the most vulnerable children in our community,” DeBord said. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, has established a scholarship that will benefit graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds. Master’s-level students who have excelled in the field of speech-language pathology at Penn State University will be supported by the scholarship, and recipients will be offered externships at Schreiber, an option that

the organization expects to help it recruit and hire more minority candidates for therapy positions. Schreiber president James DeBord has led the creation of several initiatives committed to reducing disparities in care and to fostering an organization that better reflects the diverse populations it serves. These include connecting with national associations representing professionals of color to expand its hiring pool, conducting outreach in local school districts to affirm the professional aspirations of young people, strengthening clinical affiliations with historically black colleges and universities, and drawing on job-training programs that are equipped to attract people of color into every department and to its management team. “Throughout our history, Schreiber has always tried to provide services to some of the most vulnerable children in our community,” DeBord said. “Our mantra is we will serve every family who needs us, and we want every child we see to reach their fullest potential. But in the past - and even still today - we have not achieved the

A program dedicated to helping individuals in transition has made its own move. The New Choices Career Development Program, most recently sponsored by the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), will return to its founding organization, the YWCA Lancaster. New Choices was created in 1985 to help individuals develop essential job-seeking and work skills, and classes were held at the YWCA, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, for many years. Later, the program’s headquarters was moved to the PA CareerLink of Lancaster County

offices. Being back at the YWCA will help new and existing clients access services. “The program fits a particular niche within the YWCA’s program offerings to support economic independence and opportunity. We have lots of parents who use our child care services who are working but are low income and are looking for an opportunity and support to move forward in a career,” said YWCA Lancaster CEO Stacie Blake. “We expect New Choices will have many inquiries from folks getting back on their feet as well as from employers who want to fill critical roles quickly.”

Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a one-day event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is required before participating in any of the Coping Kids & Teens Program activities. Parents or guardians may call 717-391-2413 or 800-9247610 to schedule a conversation with Kulas or a staff person, who will do an assessment to ensure the program will meet their family’s needs. Sometimes, young people are referred to therapists. “They can continue their therapeutic support while working on their grief,” Kulas commented. All programs are run in English, but Spanish language

By endowing this graduate scholarship at Penn State, we are taking a long-overdue step to advance equitable access to training in outpatient pediatric therapy services, with the long-term goal of creating a pool of speech-language pathology experts that reflect the communities they serve.” Penn State was selected as the educational partner because a large proportion of Schreiber’s practitioners holds degrees from Penn State’s program.

“The college’s speech-language pathology program continues to pioneer interventions that are having a transformative effect on augmenting communication,” said Craig J. We are deeply grateful to Schreiber for its generosity and leadership in making all these advances possible.” Schreiber has pledged $275,000 for the scholarship, which will be raised in addition to the funds needed for the center’s daily operations. New Choices from pg 1 Although the ongoing pandemic has prompted the 10day series of classes to be held virtually, participants continue to study the existing New Choices curriculum. They receive training in areas such as conducting a job search, resume writing, and interviewing. They also learn the value of self-esteem, effective communication styles, and stress management, and students are introduced to resources in the community that help with housing, legal, and medical issues. The program aims to preserve dignity and support personal choice. Part of its funding comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and it is overseen by Pennsylvania Women Work, which strives to transform women’s lives through empowerment, employment, and economic independence. LCCTC Dental Assistant Program instructor Rachel Sprecher noted that attending New Choices classes at the YWCA ultimately led to her current position. “I didn’t think that I was capable of much, and I didn’t think that there was much point in trying,” Sprecher commented. “The program helped build self-confidence, which

was a huge part of getting me where I am today.” New Choices classes are offered free of charge to individuals over the age of 18 who have earned at least a GED or high school diploma and are single parents, first-time pregnant women, people experiencing recent job loss, or displaced homemakers. Students who complete the course are eligible for scholarship funds for short-term education, and they may receive continued guidance from New Choices staff members. Enrollment is open for the next series of classes. Individuals may choose to attend one week, either in the morning or the afternoon. Morning sessions, which run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., will be offered Mondays through Fridays, Feb. 8 to 12 or March 15 to 19. Afternoon sessions, held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., will take place on Mondays through Fridays, Feb. 22 to 26 or March 29 to April 2. Class size is limited to 10 people per session. a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups. Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.” The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief Clubs and Camp Chimaqua. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings. To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. One night later, a very slow start proved to be the difference in a nine-point loss the Barons. The hosts racked up 20 first quarter points and held the Comets to four for all the momentum they needed. “They have a great player in Knier, who we knew we needed to stop, but she had a career-high 30 points,” noted head coach Megan Collins. “We need to do the simple photo by Mona Steinhauer things right to get back on track.” Penn Manor’s Kimberly Miller protects the ball as she drives to Determined, Manor buckled the baseline against Cedar Crest’s Kaya Camasta in last Tues- down in the second quarter, holding day’s Section One outing in Millersville. the Barons to 10. They picked up the offensive pace in the third, tallying 19 points and closing the gap to 4434 but couldn’t get over the hump. Free throws were also key. The Barons connected on 16-of-24 attempts while the Comets were 9-of-18. Sugra scored a team-high 24 points. Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Comets missed their first eight shots of the game and fought from behind from start to finish in a loss to Cedar Crest. the stripe, but the Comets were denied a single field goal in the frame. “We just couldn’t hit anything the entire game,” said Collins. “I thought we played well defensively but if you don’t score, you won’t win.” BOWLING The Comets rose to the top of the Section One standings with wins over Hempfield (5-2 on Jan. 14), McCaskey (7-0 on Jan. 15) and Manheim Township (7-0) on Jan. 19. “We’re off to a good start which is important because of our shortened season,” head coach Neal Vital. “The Township match was for first place. We were both 12-2 going in so I expected it to be closer.” The Comets took the first two games by over 100 pins and the third by 92. Delaney Reitnauer, who recently committed to bowl at the University of Delaware, anchored the win with a 667 series while freshman Eva Brubaker was close behind with a 651. “Delaney has been coming up huge,” lauded Vital. “She’s our best bowler right now and against McCaskey she bowled a near perfect game of 278 making 11 of 12 possible strikes. “And our freshman, Eva, is solid as a rock and just jumped into the starting lineup,” he continued. “She holds our second highest average.” Charlie Hall also recorded a 600 series, finishing with a 613. Manor’s toughest match of the season was a 5-2 win over Hempfield on Jan. 14. “They held the lead in every game up to the final three frames,” recalled Vital. “We finished strong. Depth is the key to a successful season and we have it.” Manor pulled out an 875-859 first game win before Hempfield came back with a 975-924 advantage in game two. The Comets, with a 208 from Derek Warfel, took the third game 919-852 and won the series 2718-2686. Warfel’s 595 series edged Hempfield’s Xander Green by one pin.

Lacey Slaymaker backed Warfel with a 593, Josh Stock added a 561 and Reitnauer settled for a 508. Reitnauer’s 715 was tops against McCaskey. Hull followed at 630 and Brubaker added a 603 series. WRESTLING In non-league action January 14, the Comets fell victim to Dallastown, 57-18. On the strength of seven falls and a pair of forfeits, the visitors broke a 6-6 tie winning nine of the last 11 bouts. Dylan Coleman’s fall at 160 knotted the score while freshmen Travis Clawson (106) and Gabriel Midile (113), scored back-to-back pins as Penn Manor’s only other wins. “Despite the score, we wrestled tough,” said head coach Branden Vernalli. “Travis and Gabe both came up big. “Colt Barley had an exciting match against a returning PIAA state qualifier,” he continued. “He came up short, 6-4, but this was his toughest opponent by far. He wrestled tough.” Non-league action continued Saturday as the Comets lost 66-3 loss to Central Dauphin and then 548 against Cumberland Valley. The lone winner against CD was Barley (189)who topped another returning state qualifier, winning 9-2. “Travis lost 5-4 to D3 4th ranked William Flanagan,” Vernalli stated. “He is showing great signs of leadership and perseverance.” Barley opened the loss to CV with a 17-2 tech fall while Coleman finished the dual with a 2-0 decision. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Back-to-back games Jan. 14 and 15 were a tall task for the Comets who dropped two straight. At McCaskey on Thursday and, despite a spirited first half, they suffered a 22-5 third quarter blitz that proved to be the difference in a 69-40 loss. McCaskey. Randy Short’s 12-point night off the bench included four treys. Jack Shipley added 11 points and Brayde Erb finished with 9. Twenty-four hours later, the Comets hosted the Barons and, despite a furious fourth quarter rally, lost by 11. “Well 17 turnovers didn’t help us,” Bellew noted. The hosts were held to single digits in each of the first two quarters and were down 44-24 before a 23-14 fourth quarter rally. Shipley knocked down a pair of treys that frame, scoring eight of his team-high 17. Reed Lawrence came off the bench with six of his eight. Erb added 10. Their closest game of the season to date was a three-point thriller (46-43) at Cedar Crest Jan. 19. Tied at 30-30 in the third and then 36-36 in the fourth, Manor gained a fivepoint advantage midway through the fourth, but the Falcons closed out the game with a 10-2 run. “We had the ball with a minute left and the game tied but settled for a quick three,” said Bellew. “They knocked down a three but we answered with a layup with seven seconds. They finished with two free throws. “If we don’t’ beat ourselves, we can be very competitive,” he added. The Comets got balanced scoring in this one with Shipley (12), Ethan Benne (10) and Erb (10) hitting double figures. SWIMMING The boys’ swim team moved to 2-0 with an 84-79 win over Hempfield Jan. 19. Pan Kunyu won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, Wes Kendig took the 50 free and 100 fly, and Jayden Almodovar was tops in the 200 free. The trio teamed with Jack Garvey for a win in the 400 free relay and with Everett Barry to take the 200 medley. E. Barry, Colton Garber, Spencer Barry and Garvey also won the 200 free relay. The girls team struggled against the Knights, falling to 0-2 with a 129-35 result.

use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building oncampus food pantries. Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’ food programs. The Giant Company will match the first $1 million donated by customers through the round-up program. Additionally, customers will be able to convert their Choice points into a donation. For every 100 points converted into Grocery Dollars via the Giant or Martin’s app, $1 will be donated to the initiative, and customers will still be able to use the grocery dollars for their own savings on their grocery bill. The Giant Company will match every Choice point converted up to an additional $500,000 donated through this new initiative. Funds will be distributed to schools in March. mental health services to the most at-risk people in the community to reduce disparities in mental health care and maternal morbidity. Independent mental health care providers will offer culturally competent services to black and Latinx women, fully funded support to doula trainees and free doula services to pregnant women of color. Samaritan Counseling - Teen Hope program received $15,000. Teen Hope provides screening to identify teens at risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide in 16 Lancaster County school districts and then facilitates referrals to mental health care. The grant will transition this process to a digital method for improved accessibility, which is especially relevant during the pandemic. Elizabethtown Community Outreach and Services - Youth Crisis Response Counseling received $11,000. During the school year, the counselor addresses safety con-

cerns of the students, assists with access to community mental health services, and promotes hope and wellness. During summer break, this program will offer individual and group support grounded in skill-building, psychological education, and trauma-informed care with the student and family. COBYS received $15,895 for a telehealth basic skill-building training and EMDR telehealth training for Lancaster County mental health therapists. All Lancaster County behavioral health therapists are invited to the training, and the first 30 may enroll at no cost. LOHF encourages applicants to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for young adults and children from birth to age 26. Additional funds will be available in the spring of 2021. To learn more, readers may visit https://lohf.org/grants/.

my invites families with soonto-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning

God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom. The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of

The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten. In addition to kindergarten, Dayspring Christian Academy offers preschool programs for children who are 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. These programs offer an introduction to the alphabet as students learn a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with a Bible Character Day complete with costumes. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are woven together and rooted in God’s Word. Guided free play incorporates principles of self-government, order, and unity. Circle time incorporates songs, the calendar, weather, colors, and Bible stories. Daily art projects incorporate the history, science, Bible, and literature focus.
