“As I watched my students joyfully learn, play, and explore, I realized that this might have actually been the perfect time for the project,” Harnish said. Students are working with experts from the Stroud Water Research Center and partnering with a National Geographic

Explorer and wildlife photographer to document what they find. The STEM Alliance grant is covering all costs of transportation, supplies, and equipment, including boots, waterproof action cameras, and testing equipment. As part of the project, the students Skyped with Leonardo Lanna, a National Geographic Explorer based in Brazil, to hear about his fieldwork on the Boiling River in the Peruvian Amazon. The students are also preparing a presentation for the Little Conestoga Watershed Alliance and finding ways to visually represent their data by creating websites and StoryMaps.

Fifth-grade teacher Katie Harnish, who is leading the project, said she was concerned the grant might not be implemented as planned because of restrictions related to COVID-19, but the visits to the streams have been successful. “As I watched my students joyfully learn, play, and explore, I realized that this might have actually been the perfect time for the project,” she said. “Aside from the rich intellectual inquiry, this was also a social and emotional learning experience for my students.” Harnish said the experience has given students more appreciation for the outdoors and an interest in careers in science.

“The fire company is not having their annual mud sale,” said Strasburg Fire Company member Isaac Fisher, who noted that the nearly 50-year tradition was canceled because the event is not advisable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Isaac is enthusiastic, however, about the alternative fundraiser the organization has planned, which will involve sales of chicken barbecue, soup, and sandwiches on the same day the mud sale would have been held. “We have done this before, and we usually sell out,” Isaac noted. On Friday, Feb. 26, the fire company will sell chicken corn soup only by takeout at the station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, from noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 27, a barbecue, soup, and sandwich sale will feature chicken barbecue meals; chicken corn soup; American sub sandwiches with ham, lettuce, tomato, and onion; and ham and cheese sandwiches on round rolls. “Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.

Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems

Justin Frey

The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Marvin Horst

Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System?

Phil Higgins

Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.

Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. the Comets struggled against Township’s full court pressure, turned the ball over eight times in the quarter and saw the Streaks convert 9-of-12 free throws to pull away. “We scored two points in 16 minutes of playing,” noted head coach Megan Collins. “We need to find a way to stay consistent on offense. We need to be more disciplined on defense. “And it doesn’t help that Lily is out,” she added. “She’s a demanding presence inside. Now there is opportunity for others to step up and we need that to happen to be successful.” Feb. 8 saw the Comets host the top team in Section One, Hempfield. The $250 military scholarships are new this year. The SLCCC will award two scholarships to students who will enlist in a branch of the U.S. military. A GPA of 2.0 or higher is required. Students intending to participate in a Reserve Officer Training Corps program in college are not eligible for the scholarship. Applications should include a brief essay or video explaining why respective applicants are enlisting in their particular branch of service as well as a letter of recommendation from a community leader. Scholarship recipients will receive funds deposited directly into their personal accounts after successful completion of boot camp. Military scholarships can be used to offset the cost of supplies, uniform alterations, and transportation.

The application deadline for both scholarships will be determined by each district’s guidance office. Guidance staff members and the SLCCC Scholarship Committee will review applications for accuracy and completeness. Applications will be reviewed anonymously; the Chamber’s scholarship committee will not know the identity of the applicants until after the recipients are chosen. The school districts and the SLCCC will announce the scholarship recipients in May or early June. Applications for the business-related scholarships and the military scholarships are available at www.southern lancasterchamber.org. Students may also contact their high school guidance office for applications.

The SLCCC obtains funding for the scholarships through its annual document shredding event, which is typically held in early June in Willow Street. Last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic, but plans are being made to resume the event this year. Once again, local businesses, organizations, and residents will be invited to bring their sensitive and confidential paperbased materials for shredding and subsequent recycling. Donations for the service will be used to fund the annual college scholarships. For more information about the scholarships and the shredding event, readers may call SLCCC secretary Keith Kaufman at 717786-5617.

and substance use. This workshop will explore the role of the faith community in awareness, education, and recovery support and provide tips for initiating a team program/ministry. The workshop counts for six PCB credit hours. GOAL Project’s mission is to prepare and support the community in addressing the challenges of addiction and recovery. Through the F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives Program, GOAL helps local faith communities to build sustainable teams to prevent substance misuse/abuse and to offer support to help sustain recovery. The workshop series is delivered by local presenters in collaboration with Faith Partners, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that has trained hundreds of congregational teams from 22 different faith traditions in 29 states. In Lancaster and York counties, 11 churches are in various stages of ministry development. The F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives Program is supported by the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission and Compass Mark. Members of all faiths groups are welcome. Registration is available at www.goalproject.org. The Giant Company also announced that it has been awarded the 2020 Gold Plate Award by the FMI Foundation in the COVID-19 Heroes category. This category, which is new to the annual awards program, recognizes charitable programs that help families share meals together during the pandemic. The Giant Company accepted its 2020 Gold Plate Award for its program “The Giant Company Is for Today’s Table” during National Family Meals Month at the virtual FMI Midwinter Executive Conference on Jan. 26. This is the second Gold Plate Award for the Giant Company; it was recognized in 2018 for its “Power of One More Family Meal” campaign. During National Family Meals Month last September, the Giant Company launched

its For Today’s Table brand platform, which included refreshed uniforms and store décor, merchandising innovations and more. Customers were encouraged to share photos of their family connecting over a meal on social media using #ForTodaysTable during the month. For every photo shared, the Giant Company donated the cash equivalent to provide 100 meals to neighbors in need. In addition, ads were developed featuring real families with footage of their daily lives, including mealtime, for television and radio spots. The Giant Company distributed red tables, benches and picnic blankets throughout the community and to area food banks. On Sept. 26, 2020, National Family Day, the first 100 customers in stores also received a picnic blanket. The Giant Company rewarded its own team members, as well, providing $100 in Grocery Dollars to each of its 35,000 team members.

The Giant Company recently announced it has joined the GreenChill program, a voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partnership with food retailers, refrigeration system manufacturers and chemical manufacturers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their environmental impacts. This February, the American Heart Association (AHA), a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, is teaming up with companies around the country to fight cardiovascular disease through Life Is Why, a cause marketing campaign benefiting the AHA. Life Is Why invites consumers to celebrate their reasons to live healthier, longer lives - by giving. Weis Markets also participated in the campaign in 2020.

Through Life Is Why, Weis Markets and its customers have a quick and easy way to give to the AHA and support its mission. Weis joins several national companies, including Advance Auto, Kroger, Orangetheory Fitness, Pilot/Flying J, Stage Stores, Stater Bros. Markets and Stein Mart in supporting the campaign. Donations through Life Is Why’s participating retailers - no matter the amount - allow the AHA to fund research aimed to improve the health outcomes of heart and stroke

patients, train more than 2.5 million high school students in CPR annually and support the work of local entrepreneurs and organizations working to improve health outcomes in under-resourced communities. Those interested in supporting the AHA can look for the Life Is Why logo on Weis Markets mailers and posters and at the register this month. To learn more about the Life Is Why campaign and other participating companies, readers may visit www.heart.org/lifeiswhy.
