In Celebration Of Tomatoes Annual Festival To Take Place In Washington Boro By Dayna M. Reidenouer

A tradition spanning six decades will continue when the Washington Boro Tomato Festival takes place on Saturdays, July 14 and 21. The event will be held at the Washington Boro Park, which is located at the intersection of Penn Street (Route 999) and Water Street (Route 441). On both nights, food will be available beginning at 4 p.m., and the fun will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Country band Borderline will perform on July 14, and Stu Huggens and the Black Hats will play at the festival on July 21. Event co-chair Dick Schock noted that the latter band’s repertoire contains a mix of country, oldies, and a little bit of everything else. He expressed the hope that the variety of See Tomato Festival pg 2

Susquehanna Heritage Folks displayed items of interest during previous show-and-tell events hosted by the Millersville Area Historical Society. The next show-and-tell will be held on July 14. By Dayna M. Reidenouer

If spring cleaning turned up any interesting items, the Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) would like to see them. The organization will host its third annual show-and-tell event on Saturday, July 14, at 9 a.m. in the

Millersville Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Everyone is welcome to attend and to bring items to display and speak about. As the event approaches, MAHS president Phil Gerber encourages readers to search their homes or among their collectibles for items of historic or See Show-And-Tell Event pg 2

Cristin Germaine, founder of Lancaster Dare to Dream, spoke at the 2017 Single Moms’ Day Out. She will address the gathering again this year when the event is held at Calvary Church on July 21. By Ann Mead Ash

When Cristin Germaine planned the first Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2016, she was not sure how well the idea would be received. “When I started the journey, I didn’t know what

to expect. I was just hoping to reach some single moms,” shared Germaine. That first year, 90 mothers took part, and in 2017, 125 women participated. “This year, within the first week of opening the registration, I had 70 single moms signed up, and now we’re at See Moms’ Day Out pg 7

music would appeal to a broader segment of the population. Schock continues to be on the lookout for quality bands that fit within the event’s budget. “I would love to get a bluegrass group in here,” he remarked. Affordability is important, as the Tomato Festival is the only fundraiser held by the support group of Blue Rock Fire Rescue. While the fire department is funded by Manor Township and Millersville borough, the support group occasionally assists with purchasing additional equipment, and it hosts an annual banquet for volunteers. Recently, the support group provided money for the acquisition of a new squad vehicle that transports volunteers and water rescue gear and pulls a trailer with a boat when the watercraft is needed. At the festival, the support group will profit from games and the sale of food. Games will include a dime pitch and stands where competitors may win candy, cakes, fruit baskets, and goldfish. “The kids like that,” support group vice president Brenda Miller said of the goldfish stand. She did not indicate whether parents like it. The food options will include hot dogs and sauerkraut, burgers, beef barbecue, sausage sandwiches, and soft-serve ice cream. Chicken corn soup will be available for takeout as well as for eating at the event. Customers may bring their own containers if they wish. A vendor will sell fries and funnel cakes. The tomato sandwiches and BLTs made with locally grown produce are the highlight of the festival. “People wait in line (for a long time); it’s amazing,” Miller commented. “They do that because they look forward to it.” Folks may purchase locally grown tomatoes and fruit from stands at the festival. Event T-shirts will also be for sale. The festival will offer opportunities to win a 55-inch television, a kayak, an

electronic tablet, and 10 $100 prizes. Folks may enter the drawings on both nights, and the winners will be selected in a drawing on July 21. Winners do not need to be present for the drawing. The support group welcomes volunteers to help with facilitating the festival. It will take approximately 150 people to set up, run, and tear down the event. Anyone who is interested in volunteering may call Schock at 717-951-6411 or festival co-chair Carl Miller at 717-684-4184. Additionally, folks are invited to join Blue Rock Fire Rescue. Volunteers are needed to serve in administration, as fire police, with fire fighting, or in special operations: water rescue, brush fires, and collapse team. Interested individuals are welcome to attend a monthly meeting, held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Station 5, 26 E. Charlotte St., Millersville, or they may download applications at https://bluerockfire.com.

bigger than before,” Gerber said. “I’d like to see it grow.” The MAHS holds monthly meetings that are open to the public, but it invites interested folks to join. Currently, membership is close to 115 people and entities. There is a small annual fee to join, with family and lifetime rates, as well as a cost for organizations. “An awful lot of people are interested in history, at least local history, and people come, so we know we have filled a niche,” Gerber commented. He noted that most attendees are age 50 or older, but younger people are welcome. There is no cost to attend the show-andtell event, but donations will be appreciated. nostalgic significance that audience members might find fascinating or intriguing. The things do not have to necessarily be historical, and the purposes of the items may be unknown. “I should have a couple pieces of metal that I found digging around in my garden,” Gerber remarked. “I have no idea what they are, but maybe someone else will.” Items do not have to be related to Millersville. Gerber noted that during the inaugural show-and-tell event, he displayed a coin dispenser that he used when collecting the 24-cent fee for a York newspaper. Individuals who wish to participate are not required to reserve space ahead of time. They may simply show up with their things and be prepared to chat about them. Gerber would like to have a significant turnout, and he is hopeful, based on the event’s history. “People really liked last year’s. It was

Boy Scouts Complete Projects At Schools Noah Johnson, Matthew Julian, Dylan Terry and Stephen Marquette, members of Boy Scout Troop 268 in Millersville, all recently completed Eagle Scout projects at Penn Manor elementary schools. The projects helped the Scouts attain the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Boy Scouts. Noah built picnic tables for Eshleman Elementary School students to use at recess, and Matthew constructed bins for a new composting program at Conestoga Elementary and helped to rebuild the school’s community garden plots. At Central Manor Elementary, Dylan repainted the playground basketball court, and Stephen added a beanbag bull’s-eye game to the playground

of getting moms plugged into those churches,â€? said Germaine, who noted that In the Light Ministries in Lancaster and Harvest Fellowship in Stevens are now both providing regular Dare to Dream meetings and support for area single mothers. “It was exciting to be able to open those,â€? said Germaine. Germaine said that she focuses on creating an event that will have a significant impact on those who attend. “I want it to be purposeful and meaningful,â€? she said. “As a single mom myself ‌ my time is valuable. It’s a break that a lot of (our participants) don’t (normally) have, and that’s why we provide the child care.â€? However, Germaine made it clear that Single Moms’ Day Out is not just for mothers of young children. “This isn’t only for young single mothers raising their (children),â€? noted Germaine. “It’s for the older single moms whose (offspring) are grown. We’d love to include them as part of this event as well.â€? It takes about 150 volunteers to hold the annual Single Moms’ Day Out. Individuals who wish to volunteer may do so through the website mentioned previously. Germaine hopes to raise $20,000 to fund the 2018 event. A banquet held in May raised about $10,000, and donations have brought the fund to about $15,000. Those who would like to help fund the event may do so online at the website. Women who wish to take part in this year’s event may register through the website or by searching for “Lancaster Dare to Dreamâ€? at www.eventbrite.com. Those who would like to participate are asked to register by Sunday, July 8.

and the Diva Shop. The day will open with praise and worship led by Liz Shoemaker. “There are two main sessions, said Germaine, “one at the beginning and one at the end of the day. This year, single mother Desovia Robinson, who led praise and worship at the 2016 event, will speak, as will Germaine. Women who attend will be able to select three of the seven workshops that will be offered. This year, the choices will include Co-parenting - The Challenge of Parenting Alone But Not Really; Bullying - Teaching Our Kids to Stand Up for Themselves and Others; Establishing a New Reality; To Simplify Your Life, Elevate Your Style; Dashboard - Learning to Be You; Bible Study - Boring or Greatest Adventure Ever?; and, a repeat from 2017, Disability - How It Impacts You and Positive Approaches to Moving Forward. “The (disability workshop) was one of the (most requested) last year, said Germaine. “A huge (number) of single moms are dealing with children with disabilities. The Diva Shop is a popular spot at the event. Attendees receive Diva Dollars to use at the shop, which will feature a variety of gently used and new items including jewelry, scarves, purses, sunglasses, and flip-flops. Readers who wish to donate to the shop may do so at http://hope4singlemoms.us. This year, when Germaine speaks to the gathering, she plans to talk about the growth of the ministry. “I will speak about Lancaster Dare to Dream, said Germaine, who noted that Dare to Dream groups have expanded from one church to three. “This year, I will focus on the ministries in the hope
