High school student sets the stage for DIY theater group

During the quarantines brought on by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, schools closed their doors and in-person gatherings were canceled until further notice. Many students sought ways to battle their boredom, including Dana Raugh, now a Penn Manor High School (PMHS) senior, who decided to start writing and directed her own theater productions. Four years later, Dana’s creative side project has evolved into a DIY theater group that regularly offers shows for the local community.

“The whole thing started because my sister and I were bored and wanted to do something interesting,” Dana said. “We got the idea because our cousins used to put on these silly little productions for our family

when we were younger, and we had so much fun.”

Dana’s first play was an adaptation of the board game Clue, which she and her sister, Julie, filmed and uploaded to YouTube in August 2021. Dana continued

“I always tell people if they

want to try theater, come check us out.”

to put together shows for her YouTube channel with Julie serving as an actress, and Dana eventually transitioned to social media platforms Instagram and TikTok to post the videos. More of Dana’s friends became involved with each show, and the group now includes 18 fellow

PMHS students or alumni.

After sharing several productions online, Dana held her first live show last summer at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lancaster. Dana has never held any auditions for her shows, instead welcoming any of her friends to join the cast. The students typically rehearse in the garage of Dana’s home a few times a week leading up to the show, and Dana uses tape to map out the stage until they can rehearse at the church one week before showtime. “If they’re rehearsing on hot days, they move into the living room and overtake my house,” joked Dana’s mother, Kristi.

Since organizing her first production, Dana said her main goal has stayed the same: to have fun. “I always tell people if they want to try theater, come check us out,” Dana added. “It’s nothing embar-

Lions District 14-D recently assembled 160 Jared Boxes for distribution to children and youths in the local area.

The Jared Box Project was inspired by a kindergarten boy named Jared from State College. Jared had an incurable brain stem tumor and a dream to bring smiles to the faces of other sick children. Jared noticed that the other children waiting for appointments seemed frightened and sad, so he asked his mom if he could share the

toys from his backpack with the other kids. To honor Jared after his death, classmates at Our Lady of Victory School and Cindy Kolarik founded the Jared Box Project. Kolarik serves as executive director.

After hearing about the project, Lions District 14-D decided to make Jared Boxes its service project for this year. District governor-elect Deb Keeports chaired the project. She recruited fellow Lions Club members Deb Bagnoli, global services chair,

The American Lung Association recognized Lancaster resident Kevin Stewart as the recipient of the 2024 Hoyt E. Dearholt Distinguished Professional Service Award at a recent awards ceremony held in Chicago, Ill. The national award is the highest honor a staff member can receive from the organization and is presented annually to an employee who has made significant and lasting contributions throughout his or her Lung Association career.

Dana Raugh
Harold Wimmer (left), president and CEO of the American Lung Association, and Cheryl Calhoun (right), immediate past chair of the American Lung Association’s national board of directors, present the Hoyt E. Dearholt Distinguished
to Kevin Stewart.

Stewart currently serves as the national director of environmental health for advocacy and public policy at the American Lung Association and leads efforts on informing the public about air pollution, its health effects, its sources, and means of control. Since beginning his work with the American Lung Association in 1987, Stewart has grown professionally from his initial service in environmental and occupational health in the former one-county Lung Association affiliate in Lancaster County through posts at different levels to his current national position. Stewart is a voice for healthy air and its health effects for the Lung Association and has been instrumental in shaping the nationwide healthy air program.

Stewart works with many partners, including other public health and environmental organizations as well as federal agencies on policy and regulatory issues, and on indoor and outdoor air quality projects for the organization. He is the Lung Association’s voice for its signature “State of the Air” report, released every April since 2000. The report draws public attention to air pollution, control challenges, and successes across the country.

As an advocate for healthy air, Stewart regularly represents the Lung Association with comments and testimony before federal, state, regional, and local agencies engaged in public policy on clean indoor and outdoor air and climate change. He has submitted formal comments or testimony on topics such as increasing protective National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter and ozone, updating greenhouse gas emission standards for light-duty vehicles, and

limiting methane from the oil and gas industry. His expertise and advocacy efforts span a broad range of topics from indoor radon, outdoor wood boilers, antiidling measures, and school indoor air quality in Pennsylvania to national energy policy and improving the public’s right to know about environmental and public health threats.

Stewart joined the Lung Association at the time when radon was first recognized as an environmental hazard in people’s homesa discovery that was made in eastern Pennsylvania; additionally, radon was soon shown to be found in his hometown of Lancaster. Stewart was an early proponent for increasing radon awareness, testing, and mitigation in homes and schools and has been instrumental in helping to reduce the public health threat of radioactive radon gas. He has been an integral part of the multi-agency team that developed the U.S. National Radon Action Plan and serves on the Lung Association’s staff team overseeing it. For decades, he has managed statewide grant-funded programs to reduce indoor radon. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Indoor Environments Association, the AARST Consortium on National Radon Standards’ Executive Stakeholder Committee, and Standing Committees for Radon Measurement and New Construction.

Stewart, an alumnus of Lancaster Catholic High School, holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Princeton University. He resides with his wife, Rose.

Dana’s most recent show took place on July 21 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, and it featured a rendition of “Good Cop Bad Cop” by Ian McWethy and Jason Pizzarello. The event included two performances that were attended by nearly 100 people. Although the 2023 live show was free, audience members paid a small entrance fee this year to help Dana cover the cost of costumes, props and the rights to the

play. Dana said she plans to donate any remaining profits from the show to the Redeemer Lutheran Church.

The cast members of Dana Raugh’s first production, “Clue”

and Betty-Jo Bowers, childhood cancer coordinator, to help her lead this effort with a primary goal to aid children in Lebanon and Lancaster hospitals.

On June 4, members of Lions Club District 14-D gathered to assemble the boxes at the Willow Street Lions Club Community Center. Tables were lined with supplies, with items for girls on one side of the room and items for boys on the other side. The volunteers lined the boxes with glittery tissue paper and a variety of items.

The items included in the boxes for elementary children were Uno and Old Maid cards - which were Jared’s favorite toys

- socks, water bottles, coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, and squishy toys. The boxes also included activity sheets and a personalized, handwritten note for each child. The outsides of the boxes were adorned with stickers.

For tweens with behavioral issues, the Lions Club made boxes with Squishmallows, origami kits, playing cards, and word searches. The items for the boxes were purchased with a District and Club Community Impact Grant from the Lions Club International Foundation.
