Memorial 5K will focus more on the fun and less on the run
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The second annual Pete Ruggieri Memorial Un-Run will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville. Participants must be age 21 and up unless they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and a ticket for the event will include food and a beverage from the bar. Proceeds will benefit Jefferson Health’s Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center to assist its research of thyroid cancer treatments.
The fundraiser will offer a clever take on the traditional 5K run format: Although participants are encouraged to arrive in their favorite activewear in preparation for the “race” at 3 p.m., the “runners” will only need to take one step to cross the finish line. After completing all 0.0 miles of the course, participants may celebrate by enjoying a meal provided by The Fat Is Where It’s At Barbeque. Registration will include one meal ticket, and a meal will include pulled pork, pulled chicken, macaroni and cheese, smoked beans and coleslaw.
In addition to entry in the “lengthy” run, registration will include a numbered race bib, a 0.0 sticker and participation in prize drawings. Door prizes will
include items donated by local businesses and organizations such as Tellus360, the Lancaster Stormers, Stubby’s Bar and Grille, John Wright Restaurant and Passenger Coffee. The event will also feature yard games, tabletop games and other festivities.
The concept of a runless race was the brainchild of Pete Ruggieri, who died in March 2023 after a long battle with thyroid cancer. Ruggieri started organizing the event a few years ago, but his plans were placed on hold due to safety restrictions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic and Ruggieri’s declining health.
After Ruggieri’s death, his wife, Stephanie Horst, began
organizing the fundraiser in his memory, and the first Un-Run was held in September 2023. “I decided it was such a great idea that I couldn’t let it die with him,” Horst said.
Ruggieri was known to many in the Lancaster community as the founder of the Santa Stumble, an annual bar crawl that raised more than $200,000 for the horses and dogs in the City of Lancaster Bureau of Police’s mounted patrols and K-9 units. Nearly 100 community mem bers participated in the first Un-Run, raising approximately $6,000 and sharing stories in memory of their favorite local jokester.
“Pete was a clown, but he didn’t want the attention; he did it because he really recognized the importance of having fun. That’s kind of how he served the world,” said Horst. “I think we build relationships with each other by having fun, and Pete saw it as essential.”
While Ruggieri’s health declined, he participated in a clinical trial at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.
After Ruggieri’s death, Horst asked family members and friends to send donations to the cancer center in his memory. For more information or to reg ister for the event, visit https:// tinyurl.com/unrun2024.

On June 15, members of Girl Scout Troop 70624 teamed up with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation to complete a service project at Lancaster County Central Park. The girls collaborated with park naturalist Lisa Sanchez to design and build a platform for turtles in the pond adjacent to the park’s environmental center. The troop’s members, which includes Junior Scouts from the Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts, earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award for their participation in the project.
The Girl Scout Bronze Award is given to young Scouts who discover an issue in the local community and work as a team to create a solution. Since the members of Troop 70624 have a long history of working with local animal advocacy organi zations and wildlife preserva tions, they wanted to use the Bronze Award project to help an endangered species native to Pennsylvania. The turtle platform project was inspired by an encounter with wild box turtles
More than 100 community members attended the first Un-Run, which took place in downtown Lancaster.

Flu vaccinations available
The Giant Company has announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.
Flu shots for the 202425 flu and cold season are all trivalent and intended to protect against three strains of influenza: H1N1, H3N2 and a B/Victoria lineage virus. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies carry several different types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors, including standard and high-dose products.
Most insurance plans cover flu shots with $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists and specially trained pharmacy team members, subject to state regulations.
Walk-ins are welcome, but customers can also make an appointment if they prefer. In addition, starting on Friday, Aug. 30, customers who present
their Giant or Martin’s card and receive a flu shot can get an offer for $5 off $25 of a future grocery order.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone 6 months and older, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over age 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

GMTRC is serious about horsing around
BY JEFF FALK
For humans, interaction and physical contact with some animals can be soothing, intriguing or even therapeutic. Count horses among that group of special animals.
The healing power of horses is the premise upon which Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) is founded.
“There is a unique bond that can be found with a horse,” said Stephanie Fleck, GMTRC’s program director. “Science is starting to catch up and find out what horsemen have known for centuries. (Horses’) ability to read body language is higher than any other therapeutic animal. Horses can feel a human heartbeat from 4 feet away.”
“When you enter into a barn, you’re entering into that relationship,” continued Fleck. “If you come in with all this baggage, they pick up on that. That’s why equine therapy is so beneficial. You can’t lie to a horse.”

Located on 30 acres at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, GMTRC uses equine therapy to help at-risk individuals - folks with mental and physical disabilities, people with autism, veterans with post-traumatic stress
disorder, inactive seniors, even some without a formal diagnosis. Through its lessons, programs and activities, GMTRC works with people from ages 4 to 80, both in one-on-one and in group settings. More than 200 people are served each year.
“There’s no way to replicate the movement of a horse, and it’s very beneficial and very therapeutic,” said Fleck. “People find the movement of a horse to be very calming. Our students may be able to connect with their equine partners in ways they can’t with human relationships. It’s having fun with your horse. It helps progress them in their everyday lives.”
GMTRC is home to 10 horses. Its facilities include an indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding arena and spaces to ride in nature. But some individuals also benefit from simply taking care of the horses.
“We love and rely on our horses. They’re providing the services,” said Fleck. “A lot of people have heard of us, but they really don’t know what we do. If people come out, we find that they fall in love with it. We serve a broad scope of our community. Everybody knows someone who can benefit from our services.”

Exhibit to feature artworks created during the pandemic
“Isolation,” a collection of abstract paintings created during the pandemic by Jeremy Lee Rebuck, will be on display at Mulberry Art Studios this September.
The public is invited to join the artist for a First Friday Reception on Sept. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios, located in downtown Lancaster at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., offers free parking in its private lot.
Rebuck, who created the pieces over the course of four years, began painting at the beginning of the
pandemic while living alone in quarantine. He found painting to be a great outlet for all the emotions he was feeling. He decided to share his artworks with the community once everyone was able to gather together again; through the project, he hopes to raise awareness of mental health and the benefits that art and creativity can have. employs 10 staff members, three of whom are full time.
GMTRC staff members are trained, but they are not licensed therapists or counselors.
“We have a large demand for services,” said Fleck. “Our services are provided
by trained and certified staff, but we are not licensed therapists. We work on horsemanship goals. Therapists would work on clinical goals. There is a distinction there.”
Financed through donations, fundraising and grants, GMTRC began as Lancaster County Therapy Riding with seven students in 1981. In the beginning, the organization was operated entirely by volunteers.
“We’ve grown and grown over the years, and we’ve been able to add paid staff,” said Fleck. “We’re kind of poised for another growth period. We’re working hard to expand our services. Currently, our wait list is way too long. We’re looking at how to meet the needs of the community.”

FALL
during one of the troop’s camping trips last summer. “When you think about endangered species, you of think of animals in the rainforest and things like that,” said Kirsten Ditzler, co-leader for Girl Scout Troop 70624. “We see less and less box turtles on hikes and camping trips, and after doing some research, we learned that they qualify as an endangered species.”
After the Scouts decided to help turtles with their project, they contacted the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation to learn more about the reptiles and their habitat. The girls identified the need for a safe habitat in Lancaster County Central Park’s pond that would allow wild turtles to bask in the sun; the animals often use rotted logs and other objects that deteriorate easily or float away.
The Scouts and several parent volunteers engineered a structurally
sound wooden platform that could withstand the wear and tear of the outdoors as well as the unpredictable water level of the pond, which fluctuates depending on how much rainfall there is. The girls also earned the Engineering badge by completing the project, as it gave hands-on experience working with power tools and taking precise measurements. Supplies for the project were donated by PPL Electric Utilities and GR Mitchell Inc., a hardware store in Willow Street.
In previous years, members of Troop 70624 have completed service projects for the Pet Pantry of Lancaster and the Wolf Sanctuary of PA in Lititz.
“My girls have always been interested in animals,” Ditzler said. “(Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation) has been absolutely amazing, supporting us through education and giving the girls a chance to learn through hands-on experience.”
Parent volunteers helped members of Troop 70624 construct a platform for turtles to rest on in Lancaster County Central Park.

Dam Bridge Challenge will support Riverkeeper Association
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
You can help to ensure the quality of the water in the Susquehanna River by getting out on the river during the sixth annual Dam Bridge Challenge. The fundraiser to benefit the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning and ending at the Lock 2 Recreation Area, 2140 Fishing Creek Road, Wrightsville.
• Enjoy Smoked Pork BBQ with all the “fixins”
• Drive your “old” car to qualify for prizes awarded in several categories
• Oldies Music provided by D.J. Rockin Roy
• Door Prizes
Participants are invited to compete in three paddle races - a 10-mile route, a 3-mile course or a quarter-mile kids’ race - or enjoy a 1-mile recreational paddle during the event, which will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. before the first boats hit the water at 9 a.m.
“Typically for the Challenge, we get a wide array of boats out on the water, from surfskis, which are very fast kayaks, to outrigger canoes, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and recreational canoes,” said Ted Evgeniadis, executive director of the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Participants should bring their own boats, although there is equipment available for rent for people who need it.
The event gets its name from the 10-mile race, which pits participants against each other either up river or down river,

To be eligible, an applicant must be a full-time student who will be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program that is an
Evgeniadis shared.
When the race started six years ago, the Riverkeeper Association’s office was located at Shank’s Mare Outfitters along the river. An employee who is an avid stand-up paddleboarder and kayaker had the idea for the challenge race because of the organization’s location.
“It’s 5 miles from there to the Safe Harbor Dam, and it’s 5 miles to the Route 462 bridge that connects Wrightsville to Columbia,” Evgeniadis explained. “On the day of the event, the direction is chosen, and the registrants don’t know which way it will be - either to the dam and back or to the bridge and back.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top three male and female winners in a variety of age groups, and all participants will receive a reusable tote swag bag filled with freebies.
Live music and refreshments will be featured at the race’s conclusion.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Founded in 2006, the organization works to promote clean water.
“We advocate against pollution and we educate the public through programming,” Evgeniadis said. “We have a lot of citizen science programming on monitor-
from pg 2
ing for bacteria, microplastics, general water quality and more.” The group host cleanup events, advocates for research, funds scientific studies and works to ensure there is fishable, swimmable and drinkable water in the Lower Susquehanna River watershed.
“There’s a lot of great organizations that support the area around the Chesapeake Bay watershed,” Evgeniadis said. “This one supports work that is crucial to keep our drinking water safe, to make sure the water people recreate in is safe.”
He encourages anyone who is interested to join the challenge, noting that the event puts a premium on safety.
“Don’t be scared to get out on the water,” he said. “This event is on the Susquehanna, but it’s being held on Lake Clarke, which is a reservoir formed
behind Safe Harbor dam, so the water is super flat with little to no current. It’s on the river, but it’s like paddling on a lake.”
Organizers will also station safety boats throughout the length of the race, ready to relieve tired boaters or help with any emergencies.
“We encourage everyone to come and experience the Susquehanna River, to get out on it,” Evgeniadis commented. “When you come to the Dam Bridge Challenge, you’re enjoying a time to come together and celebrate our successes while supporting a really great cause and an organization with an important mission.”
