EPC will celebrate 70th anniversary with community event
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy, and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). As EPC celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at its facility at 1100 Corporate Blvd. in Lancaster. Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Auntie Anne’s, Cupcakes by Casey, Tri-County Barbecue and Homage. Guests may enjoy
complimentary ice cream from Kreider Farms while supplies last.
Live entertainment will be provided by Blessing & Fowler from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Comprising musicians Zach Blessing and Nate Fowler, the duo performs soulful tunes and classic hits throughout central Pennsylvania. The event will also feature a live broadcast from WJTL from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and local mascots Johnny from Achenbach’s Pastries and Cylo from the Lancaster Stormers will make an appearance.
The open house will feature a variety of yard games and activities for children, including face painting and balloon twisting, and Cherry Hill Orchards will provide pumpkins for kids to decorate.
Guests may participate in several prize drawings during the open house, and prizes will

The date of the parade has been changed to occur earlier than previous years to accommodate both Penn Manor High School and Millersville University’s homecoming festivities and fall sports schedules. The date of the parade was also modified to lessen the chance of unfavorable weather conditions, after spectators braved the rain last year. “We were able to get most of the parade in before the rain hit, but you lose bands in those
instances because the instruments can’t stay outside,” said Lydia Yeager, director of university events at Millersville University. “We’re grateful to the community for toughing it out with us.”
The parade will feature various floats, vintage cars, representatives from civic organizations and veterans’ groups, as well as marching bands from across the county. Every year, marching bands travel to Millersville from outside Pennsylvania to perform in the parade alongside local bands such as the Penn Manor High School marching band.
For more than 40 years, Quest for Learning has offered people of retirement age in the Lancaster community an opportunity to attend a series of seminars. Sessions are presented by leading local experts in their fields, including educators, public officials, business and community leaders, writers, artists, and musicians.
The 9:40 a.m. sessions will be the Richard Keller Memorial Lecture Series
The 11 a.m. offerings will be “Historic Presidential Decisions” coordinated by Robert J. Bresler; “The Multifaceted Art of Spanish Dance,” presented by M. Ana B√∂rger-Greco; “Behavioral Ecologists Look at Nature” with Jean G. Boal and Robert C. Paul; and “Traveling While Black” coordinated by Tana Woodcock and Judith E. Davis. The Millersville Parade was started 27 years ago by a group of volunteers whose main goal was to bring Millersville University and the local community closer together. After over a quarter of a century, the event has evolved into one of Lancaster County’s biggest parades, often attracting upwards of 15,000 contributors and spectators.
“It’ll be what people have come to expect and love about our parade,” Yeager said. “We’ve found our niche with the timing, size and length of the parade to offer a bit more variety as the parade has evolved over the years.”

More than 100 volunteers work together to make the parade possible each year. Volunteers fill many different roles, and they assist by directing traffic, assembling inflatables and carrying banners and flags. The annual parade is also made possible by the support of several local service organizations and businesses that sponsor the event or provide volunteers.

Putt for Education serves as JASCPA’s largest fundraiser of the year. The event not only helps the organization sustain the many programs it provides schools throughout the year, but it allows JASCPA to offer its programming at no cost to schools. Specific programs are offered at different grade levels, but each activity falls under one of three educational pillars: financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. “Our main goal is to give students a taste of all the different things out there in the world,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “We want them to realize not every pathway you go down requires a fouryear degree. There’s a lot of options available, and you can find a really exciting job.”
One of JASCPA’s many programs is Your Economic Success! (YES!), a half-day educational event. The next installment will take place at Centerville Middle School on Wednesday, Sept. 18. YES is designed to familiarize seventh- and eighth-graders
with the financial decisions and career choices they will face as working adults, and it incorporates activities such as budget balancing, working as a team and building a resume. JASCPA will also host a STEM Summit at Hempfield High School on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and Thursday, Nov. 7.
REAL Life, a program JASCPA offers for 11th-graders, will be held at Penn Manor High School on Thursday, Oct. 24, and Friday, Oct. 25. The program entails a full school day of educational activities that will help prepare students for job interviews, managing finances and maintaining a personal brand on social media.
REAL Life will also take place at Lampeter-Stras -
burg High School on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, and the school will host a STEM Summit for its freshmen on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025.
Every year, JASCPA serves more than 30,000 students in Lancaster County with its programs, which require more than 9,000 volunteers to operate. Volunteer opportunities in nearly every school district in the county are available online at www. jascpa.org.
“We want to make sure students are prepared to join the workforce and learn about the opportunities available right here in southcentral Pennsylvania,” Kierce said. “We’re so fortunate to partner with so many businesses and organizations that realize
this is an investment in all our tomorrows.”
NATURE INTENDED
Talk to focus on Edgar Allan Poe
The Millersville Area Historical Society will host a presentation titled “Edgar A. Poe’s Formative Years and the Best Kept Secrets of His Link to Lancaster County” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.
Mike Kaufhold, Millersville Borough Council (MBC) member and retired Penn Manor High School English teacher, will be the speaker. Using slides and other visuals, including old movie posters, to illustrate his talk, Kaufhold will reflect on the people who influenced his interest in Poe and then point out links to Lancaster County that aided Poe during his most trying financial times. He also will comment on the scope of Poe’s contributions to American literature. A question-and-answer session will close the meeting.
Kaufhold, a resident of Millersville since 1978,
retired from teaching in 2013 after serving Penn Manor for 33 years. In retirement, in addition to serving on the MBC, he continues to officiate basketball games, and he volunteers for the Loft Community Partnership. A 1965 graduate of McCaskey High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in English from Millersville University.
