Discovering history through adventure

When you’re young, the world is full of adventure. Children’s imaginations can make digging holes in the yard feel as exhilarating as an archaeological dig, and with some creativity and a few sticks of sidewalk chalk, a driveway can transform into an intergalactic space vessel. Many adults grow out of the tendency to explore the wonders of everyday life that was enjoyed by their younger selves, but Adam Zurn, a local teacher and real-life adventurer, is an exception.

Zurn is a resident of Conestoga

and a technology education teacher at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. But when Zurn is not in the classroom, you can probably find him exploring nearby historical sites off the beaten path or organizing competitive treasure hunts via his website, https://unchartedlancaster.com.

In April, more than 700 history buffs participated in Uncharted Lancaster’s fourth annual treasure hunt, which entailed a five-week quest to find a statue of a golden osprey. During the game, teams of treasure hunters worked together to answer riddles and to solve puzzles related to local history, slowly

uncovering the coordinates of the statue and a cash prize. The annual scavenger hunt also serves as a fundraiser; this year, it raised around $4,200 for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and roughly $500 for LancasterHistory.

In addition to organizing the annual treasure hunt, Zurn offers a list of adventures on the Uncharted Lancaster website. Each adventure takes participates to historical sites, caves and ruins found throughout the Southern End and other remote parts of the county to discover prizes. Uncharted Lancaster’s adventure page also features

In 1849, members of a church in Conestoga Township gathered to create a place of worship on a piece of land donated by Mary Jane Ross, the wife of Edward Coleman. The group constructed

a brick building the same year, and the congregation comprised by a mere 30 members. By 1924, the church’s community had grown to include nearly 50 members. Almost a century later, the congregation of what is now Colemanville Church is as large

Railfans and trainspotters show their love for locomotives in a variety of ways; some individuals enjoy traveling far and wide to see unique train cars with their own eyes, and others enjoy taking a local subway for the ride instead of the destination. One of the most popular pastimes among train connoisseurs is the assembly of miniature railroads, but these intricate displays are not confined to the safety of the indoors.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will hold its 17th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will feature a selfguided tour of five stops located throughout Lancaster, including displays in Lititz and Manheim as well as a stop in Wrightsville. Each stop will highlight an elaborate, outdoor display of operating model trains in the homeowner’s yard or garden. A list of the gardens’ addresses will be available after a ticket is

“We are grateful for those who have come before us with the vision of starting a church in this area, and we’re grateful for God’s presence throughout all these years,” said Donna Eshleman, a member of the event’s planning committee. “We pray we can continue with God’s guidance to reach out and to show his love to the community and those whose lives we touch.”

The festivities will begin with a free concert titled “Guitars for Veterans,” at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. On Oct. 19, a video presentation will be shown in the sanctuary from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to detail Colemanville Church’s history as well as significant historical events from the surrounding area. Multiple stations and displays will be set up in the church’s social hall, and each station will provide further details on history covered in the presentation. One of the displays will feature a quilt made in 1922, and another will highlight information about the explosion of a dynamite factory in Shenks Ferry in 1906. Colemanville Church’s cemetery includes a tombstone engraved with the names of the workers killed in the catastrophe.

Other displays will highlight the many traditions carried on by church members in the past, such as its softball team and annual

suppers organized by a group of women in the congregation. After the historical presentations wrap up, group hymn singing will take place at 2 p.m., followed by an ice cream social at 4 p.m.

Activities on the final day of the event will begin at 10 a.m. with a worship service, followed by a luncheon at noon. The church requests that attendees of the hymn singing and ice cream social make reservations, and individuals who wish to attend the luncheon must register by Tuesday, Oct. 1. For more information or to make reservations, call the church office at 717-872-7951 or email colemanvilleumc@ outlook.com. The anniversary committee also invites community members who have photos of the church or its events to email them to the office’s email address. “side quests,” scenic destinations that offer a hike on a beautiful trail as their reward. The adventures are self-guided, but Zurn tests each one before he publishes it on his website along with recommended provisions and a fedora rating to denote how difficult the route is; one fedora indicates an easy hike, while five fedoras warn adventurers to be ready for a challenge.

“I think a lot of peopleincluding myself - neglect our own local history. You take things for granted when you grow up around them,” said Zurn, a native of Susquehanna County.

“Being a transplant in Lancaster, I’m always asking questions that make me want to peel back the layers and learn more about the area.”

Zurn has always had a love for history and an adventurous spirit, part of which he credits to watching iconic treasure-hunter movies such as “Indiana Jones” and “National Treasure.” But the idea for Uncharted Lancaster

started in 2018, when Zurn had a conversation with a co-worker about his dog-walking routine.

Zurn shared some of his favorite places to walk his golden retriever, including the Enola Low Grade Trail and Shenk’s Ferry, and his co-worker asked if he had ever visited the old cemetery nearby. With only a few details and vague information about the graveyard available online, Zurn spent several weeks combing through the area until he discovered the elusive location, which contained gravestones dating back to the 1700s.

“It became a recurring thing in Lancaster; Google has no idea about these places, so I decide I’m going to find it,” Zurn said.

Zurn said he’s already prepping for next year’s treasure hunt, which will entail a quest to find the lost treasure of the Buzzard Gang of the Welsh Mountains. For more information, visit https://uncharted lancaster.com.

Fulton Forward Foundation awards grant

Fulton Forward Foundation, an independent, nonprofit private foundation funded by Fulton Bank, recently presented a $100,000 grant to LancasterHistory to support the development of the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy.

The center will explore the effects that Stevens, Smith and networks of advocates and abolitionists had on movements to end slavery, support racial equality and promote full citizenship in the United States.

Stevens was an American politician and lawyer and an abolitionist who championed civil rights before, during and after the Civil War. Smith served as Stevens’ closest confidante and house manager for more than 20 years. As a thriving businesswoman, she broke social barriers to achieve influence and wealth during a transformative time in American history, particularly for people of color. The Fulton Forward

Foundation is an extension of the bank’s Fulton Forward initiative, which aims to promote diversity, equity and inclusion; encourage the building of vibrant communities; foster affordable housing;

drive economic development; and increase financial literacy in the communities served by Fulton Bank. To learn more, visit www.fultonbank .com/About-Fulton-Bank/ Fulton-Forward.

“Some homeowners incorporate water features or landscaping into their models. One of the most interesting layouts this year moves through the natural habitat of the owner’s backyard,” said Railroad Museum program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “What we are always trying to do is highlight all the work people have put into developing these beautiful layouts. This hobby requires a lot of work.”

are protected from. In the past, several local retirement communities have participated in the Garden Railways Tour. Myers said many model owners adapt their layouts to a new home after moving, which requires them to get creative with how they arrange the display. “It’s always neat to see people using the spaces they’re allotted at home,” Myers added. “Even if their living situation has changed, they don’t have to give up hobbies and pursuits they enjoyed in the past.”

One might consider outdoor model railroading to be the extreme sport of the hobby. Individuals who design outdoor layouts not only need to navigate the landscape of their yards or gardens, but they also must consider elements of nature when building the model. Factors such as heavy rain, strong wind and curious local wildlife pose a threat to outdoor train models that indoor displays

Find a bargain at Fall Fest

As summer winds down, the residents of St. John’s Herr Estate are ready to serve up fun, flavor and fantastic finds during the annual Fall Fest. The event will be held at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The indoor yard sale will feature a large variety of items, said Carolyn Livingston, who is helping to organize the event.

“We have it set up in departments,” she said. “We have jewelry. We have baked goods. We line up paintings along the walls in the second-floor hallway. We have items for the kitchen, decorative items, puzzles, seasonal items, electronics, linens. We have oodles and oodles of books, CDs, DVDs and other mixed media.”

As resident Mary Miller stated, “You could almost decorate your entire apartment with everything you find here.”

New this year, visitors to Fall Fest will have the opportunity to win a handmade quilt as well.

Along with yard sale items, Fall Fest will feature a variety of food. Baked goods prepared by residents will be for sale, as

well as hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages. Chicken corn soup, prepared by the St. John’s Herr Estate chef, will be available by the bowl or quart.

“People can take their food to go, or they can sit in our dining room and eat here,” Livingston said.

Fall Fest has been held at St. John’s for more than 20 years. Items for sale are donated by residents and their families, and a group of people helps to sort and price everything.

“Originally, we started sorting and pricing a few weeks before Fall Fest,” Livingston said. “Last year, we started in April. This year, we started in March. We

had so much fun. On Saturday mornings, we would get together and sort and price. We just had a great time.”

Over the years, Fall Fest has grown significantly, she shared. It started out just in the chapel of the residence but has since moved into neighboring spaces.

“We’ve had to keep expanding,” she said. “There are items in the chapel. The rotunda has puzzles and children’s items and jewelry. Our rec room has been taken over by baked goods, and we had to move the food into the dining room.”

Proceeds from Fall Fest are used for a variety of
