The start of a new century for LCCF

This year, Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The organization has used its centennial as an opportunity to reflect on its past and chart a course for the future with a yearlong series of community events, which will conclude with Protecting Our Planet on Thursday, Oct. 17. The free community event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Farm at Eagles Ridge, 465 Long Lane, Lancaster, and it will highlight environmental issues that are specific to the area, as well as local organizations working to find solutions.

“Protecting Our Planet is the culmination of the whole year’s celebration and more than $1 million given out in awards and scholarships,” said Val Schade, LCCF’s communications manager. “It’s about how we can come together to protect natural resources and address unique

environmental challenges.”

From 6 to 7 p.m., local organizations will offer interactive activities and discuss different aspects of environmental challenges facing Lancaster County. Lancaster Conservancy will offer educational games such as Pollinator Plinko and Biodiversity Giant Jenga, and representatives from RegenAll will discuss the county’s overall air quality and collective carbon dioxide emissions. Live Music will be provided by Lavacave, a musical duo featuring Robin Chambers and Nick DiSanto.

Representatives from Lancaster Farmland Trust will talk about the organization’s efforts to preserve local farmland, which loses 3,000 acres to development each year. The preservation of Lancaster County’s farms helps to protect nearby watersheds, a topic that Pennsylvania Rural Water Association will explore with an augmented reality sandbox. The interactive display will

Christian nonprofit organization American Home Life International (AHLI) began decades ago with the dream of Marvin and Ruth Powers, a newlywed couple from Lancaster that wished to serve side by side as missionaries overseas. Although their initial dream of evangelism abroad was never realized, Marvin and Ruth hosted their

first international student in 1972. More than fifty years later, AHLI has served thousands of students from around the globe, and it continues to help them find host families throughout the United States.

AHLI’s mission statement is to “provide quality education programs to international students in the safe, caring environment of Christian host families where they will experience the love of

Christ.” Nicole Bianchi, a resident of West Lampeter, is an AHLI coordinator. Bianchi’s job is to locate families in the community that wish to open their homes to students, visiting the potential hosts to make sure they will be a good fit. “I love my job. The kinds of families that open up their homes are usually incredible people,” Bianchi said. “Every time I leave a home, I’m blown away by the heart of the community.”

Bianchi’s experience with AHLI began when she was 6 years old, after her parents had decided to host students through the organization. “It was just a part of our normal family culture,” said Bianchi. “I even went to Japan to visit a student who I consider a sister to me.”

After graduating high school, Bianchi married a professional baseball player whose career required them to travel frequently.

Bianchi and her husband lived with AHLI host families until his retirement, and they decided to become a host family themselves after returning to Lancaster. Bianchi has hosted students from various countries in Europe and Asia, and she is currently hosting a student from China. As a coordinator, Bianchi meets with visiting students once per month to check in and share a fun activity.

“I had such a passion for (AHLI) from hosting,” Bianchi said. “I feel like it does things really well,

putting kids in safe, caring homes while they get an education in Lancaster.” Although Bianchi is based in West Lampeter, host families can be located anywhere in the county.

In addition to providing international students with a safe environment to receive an education, Bianchi said AHLI allows families a paid opportunity to learn about other cultures. “People think it’s going to be like having another kid, but it really ends up being a blessing,” added Bianchi. “Parents already have to make dinner, and

every day our student will tell us about his culture, which is good for my kids to hear about.”

The Ascension Academy Concert Series will begin its season on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. with a recital of flute duets. The event will take place at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street.

Jocelyn Crosby and Faith Wasson will be accompanied by pianist Doug Wimer in a program featuring

Debussy’s “Petite Suite”; Doppler’s “Hungarian Fantasy”; Daugherty’s “Crystal,” for flute, alto flute, piano,

and chimes; and additional pieces by Uebayashi, Clark, and Gaubert. Admission is free.

during the event.

Every year, members of the Penn Manor FFA hold a tractor pull fundraiser at Washington Boro Heritage Day. The activity will take place in a field adjacent to the park, and a hayride shuttle will transport guests between the two sites at no cost. The funds raised by the tractor pull will benefit the Penn Manor FFA’s student scholarship fund.

Circle Legacy Center will have a table at the event to exhibit a collection of traditional Native American crafts and artifacts discovered in the Washington Boro area. An archaeologist from the Lower Susquehanna chapter of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology will also have a station; community members may bring locally found artifacts to the archaeologist’s table for free identification and verification.

A variety of items will be available to purchase from local artisan craft vendors, including handmade jewelry, woodworking pieces, artwork and knitted accessories. Owners of antique vehicles and classic cars are invited to bring their rides to the park to be featured in a display during the event.

Washington Boro Heritage Day is organized by Blue Rock Heritage Center, which started the annual tradition to celebrate Washington Boro’s long history and its unique relationship to the Susquehanna River. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the organization to help cover the general maintenance costs of its facility, located at 2251 River Road in Washington Boro. The building houses multiple displays of historically significant items from the area, including petroglyphs and artifacts left by Native American tribes many centuries ago.

“(Washington Boro Heritage Day) started when we created the heritage center. We thought it would be a way for the local community to have some fun while incorporating educational aspects,” said Charlie Douts, president and charter member of Blue Rock Heritage Center. “Families enjoy coming for the children’s activities, and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.”

For more information, visit www.bluerockheritage.org/ river-heritage-day.

Washington Boro Heritage Day will feature a display of classic cars and restored vehicles from around the community.
