n Sept. 19, Lancaster Conservancy celebrated the opening of the Lloyd Clark Trail at Clark Nature Preserve, 400 House Rock Road, Pequea, with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The opening was attended by representatives of organizations that Lancaster Conservancy partnered with to complete the project, and a guided hike of the new trail followed the ceremony.
As a universal access trail, the Lloyd Clark Trail is designed to accommodate community members who have limited mobility and use wheelchairs, walkers or similar devices. The 1-mile trail also offers an accessible way for families with young children and strollers to access the natural beauty of the area, taking hikers
through the wooded meadow to a scenic view of the Susquehanna River.
“We feel like access to nature for everyone is a really important component of (the Conservancy),” said Lancaster Conservancy president Fritz Schroeder.
“We realize that to truly achieve our long-term goals of acquiring land for education and preservation, we need to break down all barriers of access.”
The Lloyd Clark Trail project began more than three years ago after Fred Clark of Clark Associates approached the Conservancy with a desire to honor his father and the founder of the company, Lloyd Clark. Lloyd was passionate about giving veterans and individuals who have limited mobility access to nature, and the Clark Associates Charitable Foundation has supported local

Lancaster County residents have been celebrating the harvest at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, for a very long time, even before it was an official address.
It’s a tradition that Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum has grown through its Harvest Days event. Growing traditions is just one of the things that Landis Valley is good at.
“(Harvest Days) really trans -
forms everyone back to another time, just to see how things were done back then,” said Brian Dom, who’s been Landis Valley’s marketing and events coordinator for a year. “Basically, it’s a celebration of the end of the harvest in Lancaster County. We use it to highlight the crafts and trades used in the harvest. When people are here, we see personal reflection, and we don’t see a lot of cell phones. The focus is on family time and realizing the beautiful history we have here in

If you look closely enough, you can find consistent patterns that tie together anything from a constellation to the petals of a flower. Although mathematical sequences, humans’ thumbprints and the inside of a tree trunk may seem to have nothing in common at first glance, their unique shapes share eerily similar designs. These patterns are the primary inspiration for the work of Lancaster-based artist
Golf carts are not necessarily reserved for those hitting the links. While it’s true that a cart makes it easier for golfers to travel around a course, the vehicles are popular in and around many residential neighborhoods as well.
Global Market Insights says the golf cart market was valued at $2.5 billion in 2023, with an estimated growth of more than 7.5%
expected between 2024 and 2032. The carts are regularly used in residential communities, on university campuses, at campgrounds, and in small towns. Many homes in suburban communities, like those being built in Texas, Florida, and Georgia, now boast additional, smaller garages designed specifically for golf carts. Designated golf cart parking also has turned
up in town centers and other retail locations across the country.
As more people rely on golf carts as a second vehicle, outfitting a cart with the right gear can help it stand out.
- Cover: For those without the benefit of a special garage for the cart, a golf cart cover protects the vehicle against sun and weather damage. Look for a cover that is water-repellent.
- Cup holders: Whether they are for a morning cup of coffee or an insulated water tumbler, cup holders are an important feature on a golf cart. Many cup holders attach easily to the rear accessory bar and elsewhere.
- Upgraded tires: Tires that come standard on most golf carts are not the most durable, according to Matt’s Custom Golf Carts. Replacing the tires with ones designed for the terrain the cart will travel the most can be a wise investment.
- New lighting: Improve on visibility and style by customizing lighting accessories on the golf cart. Many carts are being used to get
around town, so it pays to have brighter headlights to see roadways and increase the cart’s visibility to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
- Anti-slip mats: These mats can help ensure passengers stay safe and secure when stepping in and out of the golf cart, particularly on rainy days. Custom floor mats are available so people can put even more style into their ride.
- Side mirrors: Improve on safety with the addition of side mirrors. Icon Electric Vehicles says most factory golf carts feature only one small, center-mounted mirror so drivers can view the roadway behind them. While adequate for the golf course, a one-mirror setup may not be safe for the open road. Adding side mirrors can help to elevate the safety factor.
- Tinted windshield: Some golf carts do not come with windshields. The addition of one, particularly a tinted version, can help reduce glare and protect against debris and bugs while driving.
- Rear flip seat kit: This kit increases the seating capacity of the golf cart. When not in use, the seat can be flipped down to carry cargo.
- Speakers: Adding speakers to a golf cart can make the ride even more enjoyable. Bluetooth speakers may not require any special wiring and can work with a smartphone. Golf carts are turning up outside of golf courses, making them a go-to second vehicle for people in various communities. Accessorizing a golf cart can improve the driving experience.

land preservation through Lancaster Conservancy’s Protect & Restore Campaign. “The catalyst of the project goes back to the Clark family and their vision,” said Schroeder. “They were all-in on making it a reality, and they would like to see us continue that vision.” Schroeder added that the Lloyd Clark Trail has seen immediate use by community members.
Universal access trails offer a more accommodating alternative to typical hiking routes by incorporating a wide, flat path made with compacted stone. The stone path has little incline, making it easily navigable for hikers of all mobilities. The Lloyd Clark Trail is the third of six universal access trails Lancaster Conservancy
plans to install throughout York and Lancaster counties. The organization placed the first two trails in Mill Creek Falls Nature Preserve in Airville and Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve in East Earl, and it plans to establish universal access trails at Climbers Run Nature Center and Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve. In addition to the Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, the project received funding assistance from the Pennsylvania Recreational Trails Program, the Federal Highway Administration, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (DCNR) Bureau of Recreation and Conservation and the National Park Service. JJ Roach, who was a finalist in a statewide art competition held in September.
For the third consecutive year, JJ was selected as a finalist in the State Museum of Pennsylvania’s annual Art of the State juried competition. JJ and 95 other artists from across Pennsylvania were chosen out of more than 600 artists and 2,000 entries. The finalists’ artworks, which include paintings, digital media, photographs and sculptures, are featured in an exhibit at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. The exhibit opened on Sept. 8, and it will remain at the museum until January 2025.
The exhibit includes JJ’s piece “Celestial Nights,” an intricate penon-paper drawing that contains hundreds of stars and small shapes. Like nearly all of JJ’s artworks,
“Celestial Nights” was inspired by a specific pattern found in nature, and the drawing took him several months to complete. Last year, JJ won first place in the Art of the State contest for his piece “Celestial Dreams,” and he was the youngest artist to be selected for the show in 2022 when he was 18 years old.
JJ and his mother, Carol, traveled to Harrisburg for the opening of this year’s exhibit, where JJ met hundreds of other artists and shared a few words about his drawing. “With JJ’s art, you just have to stand there and focus to take it all in,” Carol said. “We met a lot of people who really liked his work, and he was just honored to be picked as a finalist.”
In April 2025, JJ will have a display of artworks at the Lancaster Art Vault, 100 N. Queen St., Lancaster. The exhibit will include JJ’s photograph
“Finding Joseph’s Colors,” a black and white self-portrait that stands out from the rest of his pieces. “(Finding Joseph’s Colors) represents a feeling of humility and the journey to find my own colors and my life’s purpose,” JJ said. Carol added that JJ feels his life’s purpose is to help others find their colors in the same way he found his calling as an artist.
In recent months, JJ has been working on a new drawing titled “Seasons.” Although the new piece follows his theme of drawing inspiration from complex patterns found in nature, JJ has been branching out to work in photography and other mediums this year. JJ also said he has started searching for patterns and complexities in music, compiling thousands of songs into playlists that feature piano compositions

“What makes Harvest Days so unique is that you step right off Route 722, and when you step inside our village, you don’t even know there’s an outside world,” said Dom. “The Pennsylvania Germans came here with nothing and expanded the agricultural scene of Lancaster County immensely. That’s our goal: to educate and keep these memories alive.”
Mailed outside our circulation area for $36/year.
“For me personally, my favorite part of Harvest Days is the smiles,” continued Dom. “The smiles have always done it for me. When you’re on-site, it’s hard to be upset. Everything seems to fade away when you step into the village.”
“When we’re demonstrating crafts, people have renewed interest, just seeing how some of those crafts used to be done,” said Dom. “The past just relives itself, especially in the agricultural field. Visitors are getting the history we offer here, and they’re also getting those personal connections.”
“We’re also going to use Harvest Days to highlight the additions in our museum,” he added.
Through its demonstrating presenters, Harvest Days focuses on trades like coopering, blacksmithing, pottery, millinery, leatherworking and broom-making; foods like apple butter, sauerkraut and pork, as well as oven and hearth cooking; and fiber arts like weaving and spinning. In addition to the exhibits and demonstrations, Harvest Days will include live music, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating and a silent

“I think locals will enjoy (Harvest Days) because there’s a connection for almost everyone who lives here,” said Dom. “We want people to come out, walk through and see what personal connections they can find.”
