Penn Manor

Fundraiser will support music programs

The Penn Manor High School Chorus and Orchestra Booster Club will host a bingo fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Penn Manor High School (PMHS), 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will feature multiple rounds of bingo, a variety of local vendors and prize drawings.

Doors will open at noon, and bingo will begin at 2 p.m. Various items will be available to purchase from more than 20 vendors, with goods including handmade crafts, crocheted items, baked goods and kitchenware.

The fundraiser will include 20 standard bingo games, and the winner of each game will receive a prize donated by a participating vendor. Four additional games will take place to give players an opportunity to win a large item donated by a local business. The four large prizes will include a family photo shoot from Miranda Eorio Photography, two tickets to the Fulton Theatre, a voucher from LUXE Day

Spa and a 55-inch television from Walmart.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Penn Manor High School Chorus and Orchestra Booster Club, which supports both choruses and the orchestra program in many ways. The organization provides financial assistance for expenses not covered by the choruses’ and orchestra’s budgets, including instrument repairs, equipment replacements and the purchase of Smartboards for classrooms. The booster club also funds various educational opportunities for students such as collegiate seminars, shows on Broadway, concerts in Philadelphia and trips to Walt Disney World. “We’re a little different from traditional booster clubs,” said Michele Ericson-Stern, president of the booster club. “We definitely support extracurricular activities for the choruses and the orchestra, but we also supplement places where the school district’s budget can’t cover it.”

Last year, the booster club helped cover the cost of sight-reading classes at Millersville University.

College of Technology is launch pad

Success in the business world revolves around opportunity. Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (TSCT) not only seeks to provide opportunities for students, but also assists them with skills that will make the most out of those opportunities. They are opportunities that have the potential to be life altering.

“We are always looking at workforce data to align our

majors to the needs of the workforce,” said Pedro Rivera, who’s been TSCT’s president for four years. “We want our students to have careers. Everyone who graduates from here is employable for a lifetime. When someone can earn a living wage with one or two years of education and with little or no debt, they have more time to be mothers and fathers, to be civically minded and to engage with their churches.”

Located at 750 E. King St.,

The organization is also helping to fund a trip to Walt Disney World next fall, where students in the marching band, choruses and orchestra will have opportunities to perform throughout the amusement park and its surrounding area. In addition to financially supporting field trips and classroom equipment, the booster club funds various scholarships for students who plan to study music in college.

“For many of our students, their music ensemble is a family,” said Lauren Ciemiewicz, Penn Manor High School’s choral director. “There’s just a community aspect of music and performing with one another. I almost can’t describe the feeling, but you see it when you look at their faces while they’re singing.” Ciemiewicz added that the booster club’s extra support allows the

school’s music program to thrive, providing opportunities for students they wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

Penn Manor High School’s choruses, orchestra and band will perform a free concert open to the public at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18, in the school’s auditorium. For more information about upcoming concerts, visit www .pennmanor.net/calendar.

Fall Fest will benefit families

Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will host its annual Fall Fest from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. The free community celebration will feature a variety of fall-themed activities for children, complimentary refreshments and prizes, and it will benefit LUMC’s food bank, Blessings Pantry.

Free hot dogs, chips, popcorn, hot chocolate and coffee will be available to guests while supplies last. In the event of rain, the

event will take place inside LUMC. Although Fall Fest will be free to attend, LUMC asks guests to bring a nonperishable food item to support Blessings Pantry. Blessings Pantry provides shortterm, emergency food assistance to families and individuals who reside in the Lampeter-Strasburg and Penn Manor school districts.

The pantry, which is located at LUMC, is open from 10 a.m. to

noon on Tuesdays and on the first and third Saturdays of every month, as well as from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. No appointment is required to receive food items.

The Manor Singers, one of Penn Manor High School’s choruses, invites the community to attend the bingo fundraiser.

Fall Fest

For more information, call 717-464-4161.

Activities will include a bounce house, barrel train rides and a station where children can make autumnal crafts. Fall Fest will also feature multiple stations to offer games such as pumpkin golf, football toss, basket toss and goldfish pingpong. A pumpkin patch containing 150 pumpkins donated by Cherry Crest Adventure Farm will be open for children to pick their own pumpkins and decorate them with stickers and markers.

Attendees will receive a stamp card when they arrive for Fall Fest. Participants will receive a stamp after they complete a game; once the card is filled with a stamp from each game station, it may be exchanged for an item at the prize table. Prizes will include small, Halloween-themed items such as toys and other knick-knacks.

a new tradition of hosting an annual community celebration in autumn. The inaugural Fall Fest took place in October 2021, and the event has grown every year in both the number of attendees and variety of activities offered.

“Last year, we were worried about attendance because we had to move inside due to the rain. But there were huge lines down the hallways for games, and we had a pretty great turnout,” Short said. “(Fall Fest) has gotten bigger every year, and more and more people get involved and help plan everything. It’s one of our favorite events.”

Lancaster Flute Ensemble to present concert

The Apostles Academy of Arts & Sciences at Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will present a concert titled “Characters” by the Lancaster Flute Ensemble on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. as part of its monthly concert series.

The Lancaster Flute Ensemble, formed in 2016, currently has more than 20 members from Lancaster, York, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lititz, Reading and Lebanon and regularly rehearses at Church of the Apostles. The group got its start when three enthusiasts met at a flute camp in the Poconos. Wanting to continue the musical camaraderie at home, they decided to form an ensemble in the Lancaster area. Welcoming players with diverse musical

backgrounds, the ensemble works together to make playing a joyful experience.

The group features a variety of flutes, including piccolos, C flutes, alto and bass flutes and contrabass flutes. The group even incorporates a cello to enrich the sound. The repertoire spans classical, popular, sacred and folk music, with original arrangements by founding member Ray-Michael Kauffman.

As part of its outreach to the greater Lancaster area, the academy offers a variety of cultural programs, including concerts, music and art lessons, and support for local scholarship initiatives. Most recently, the academy contributed to STEAM programs in partnership with the Hempfield Foundation.

Lancaster, TSCT offers 24 two-year associate degrees and four oneyear certificate degrees in pursuits like electrical technology, architecture, welding, carpentry, auto mechanics and masonry.

“We have offerings for anyone at any stage of life,” said Rivera. “We’re preparing you to be a learner and preparing you to be skilled in your workforce, and we’re preparing you to be a leader. We want you to grow and be prosperous and have a career.”

There are 1,470 students enrolled at TSCT for the fall semester, and they are all Pennsylvania residents. About half live in dorms on campus while the other half commute.

“Our students are about as dynamic and diverse as the commonwealth is,” said Rivera. “They

come here with their eyes wide open. The students who come here know what they want to do with their lives. Most of them have done their research. They come here, and they’re focused. When we bring all of these students from different backgrounds together, it’s amazing to see how quickly they begin to work together. To be successful, you have to be able to work in small groups.”

Nearly 95% of TSCT students stay in Pennsylvania after they graduate. Almost 97% of TSCT graduates are placed in jobs before or right after they leave the institution.

Many students receive financial aid in the form of grants and scholarships.

“Most of these kids are just like me, first-generation college students,” said Rivera. “They are looking to change their own trajectory and the trajectories of their whole families. I see them walk into this college for their first days, I see them develop confidence and I see them graduate. When you get to see firsthand how you’re changing lives, that’s incredible.”

TSCT is named for the Lancaster resident who bequested the funds to start it in his will. It opened in 1905 to provide an education in academics and trades for orphaned youths, and it became an accredited college in 1991. In additions to academics, TSCT offers its students extracurricular activities like clubs and intercollegiate athletics and operates a campus clothing bank, a food bank and a toiletry bank.

Thaddeus Stevens was a congressman and champion of freedom and equality who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries.

“Our namesake is very important to us,” said Rivera. “Everything we do revolves around our values. Over the years, our majors have changed, our campus has changed and it’s become a much more inclusive campus. We take our responsibilities to the community very seriously. We want our students to be prosperous. We want to give every single person who walks through that door an opportunity to be successful.”
