Millersville VFW sets children’s event
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Millersville VFW Post 7294, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, will host its annual Trunk or Treat from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24. The free community event will feature complimentary refreshments, games, activities for children and emergency service vehicles from local first responders. Dozens of decorated vehicles with candy-filled trunks will be stationed in the parking lot of the VFW. Children may fill their bags with tasty treats as they visit each car and show off their costumes. Complimentary refreshments such as hot dogs, chips and juice pouches will be available in the banquet hall. Halloween-themed games and activities and face painting
will also take place in the banquet hall, and a hayride will be offered outdoors.
“People can eat first and go outside, or they can start outside and eat after the kids collect candy,” said McKayla Herman, VFW Post 7294’s banquet manager and the organizer of the event. “We like to have something other than candy so the kids can eat a proper meal before they fill up with sugar.”
“The fire and police departments really engage with the kids, and the kids love it.”
Trunk-or-treaters will also have an opportunity to see emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and police cars up close, and many emergency service workers will offer interactive games and activities to youngsters who visit their stations. Last year, members of the Manor Township Police Department set up an interactive, Halloween-themed graveyard display

Of all the holidays traditionally celebrated around the world, Halloween is one of the most unique - and most peculiar - celebrations of the year. When autumn ushers in the start of the holiday season, many people first think of Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas gifts as the colder months approach.
But Halloween, a day that one might regard as the delinquent younger sibling in the family of holidays, has a long history of
odd customs that set it apart from Yuletide and Easter, and residents of Lancaster County have added their own traditions to the mix over many years. Halloween originated as All Hallows’ Eve, taking place before the annual Christian celebration of All Hallows’ Day on Nov. 1. The evening signifies the beginning of Allhallowtide, a time of year when Christians honor saints, martyrs and departed souls who are yet on their journey to heaven. All Hallows’ Day has been observed for more

The inaugural Martic Community Fall Fest will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, at Rawlinsville Volunteer Fire Company, 33 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood. The free event, hosted by the Martic PTO in partnership with the fire company and Mt. Nebo Church, will feature food trucks, live music, prize drawings and fall-themed games and activities for kids.
Vehicle owners who participate
Fall Fest
in the Trunk or Treat are encouraged to decorate their cars for the event, and prizes will be given out in categories such as best trunk and most creatively decorated trunk. Prizes will include various items donated by local businesses such as Farm Fresh Beef in Quarryville and Gather Home Boutique & Furniture in Conestoga. Tickets will be available to purchase for multiple prize drawings, which will feature additional items donated by businesses as well as gift baskets assembled by Martic PTO.
Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Nano Burger, Robino’s, Cupcakes by Casey, Penny’s Ice Cream and Lori’s Lattes.
Live music will be provided by one-man band Rick Kilby, who frequently plays old tunes and classic hits at local restaurants and churches. Kilby often hands out small instruments for audience members to use during his interactive and family-friendly performances.
In addition to the Trunk or Treat, attendees of Fall Fest may enjoy hayrides and activities such as face painting, which will be offered by members of Penn Manor High School’s National Honor Society chapter.
Proceeds from prize drawing ticket sales will benefit Martic
PTO, which will use the funds to offer field trips and special events such as school assemblies and pep rallies for students at Martic Elementary School.
Martic PTO decided to organize its first fall festival after members of the group discussed possible community events that would include not only students at Martic Elementary School, but the greater community as well. The PTO contacted the Rawlinsville Volunteer Fire Company to ask if it would host the event, as the school campus would not accommodate a largescale community celebration.
The fire department agreed to assist with the event, and its members will bring fire trucks for children to see up close and look inside. Martic PTO also invited Mt. Nebo Church to collaborate on the event by merging Fall Fest with the church’s annual Trunk or Treat.
“This is the first of what we hope will become an annual tradition,” said Martic PTO president Jodie Stark. “We wanted to do something that focused on the community as a whole and not just the school. We’re excited to see how the event unfolds, and we look forward to seeing faces from around the community.”

Doors will open at 11 a.m. There will be 20 games and three special games. Prizes will include purses, tools, gift cards and gift baskets. Tickets may be purchased for a discount in advance by emailing Cheryl Campbell at roxred@ comcast.net or by calling 717-4687996. Tickets will also be available for full price at the door. Halloween from pg 1
than a thousand years, but the Halloween we know in modern times is the product of various cultures and traditions picked up through the centuries. Similarly to Christmas, All Hallows’ Eve adopted many customs that historians attribute to Celtic societies, including the Gaelic festival Samhain. Samhain marked the beginning of winter in the ancient Gaelic calendar, and its rituals involved offering food, drinks and crops to wayward spirits and wandering souls who may arrive at the door. By the 16th century, Scottish celebrators practiced “guising,” the annual tradition of performing door to door to earn food and treats. Many “guisers” carried turnips carved with faces and symbols to scare away evil spirits, a custom that was inspired by an Irish folk tale.
Irish and Scottish immigrants brought many Halloween traditions to the United States, and the rituals continued to evolve as the country developed. Turnips were replaced by pumpkins, as they are native to North America and easier to carve. As popular media began to include macabre fictions and what eventually became the horror genre, Halloween celebrations started incorporating skeletons, ghosts and vampires.
Many parts of the country developed their own unique Halloween traditions, and Lancaster County is no exception. “I heard stories of people who would go out and tip over outhouses as a prank (in Washington Boro),” said Charlie Douts, president of Blue Rock Heritage Center and lifelong resident of the area. Douts added that children throughout the Southern End would often shuck ears of corn and toss them onto porches to make residents wonder if a restless ghost had arrived for dinner.
As one of the first colonized areas in America, Lancaster has a multitude of allegedly haunted houses, spectral residents and other folk tales derived from its rich history. Although ghost sightings
cannot be confirmed, every part of the county has its own nuanced accounts of paranormal encounters. Today, visitors travel from across the country to visit Field of Screams, a haunted attraction located in the cornfields of Mountville.
Churches and service organizations throughout the county offer more family-friendly activities such as Trunk or Treats and fall festivals for the community to enjoy.
The end of October is approaching quickly, and the spookiest day of the year is but one week away. May this be a reminder to stock your candy bowls for young trick-or-treaters, and if you visit Washington Boro, it may be wise to exercise caution when using an outhouse.

Elks Hoop Shoot
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When it comes to future success, one factor has a strong influence: grit. According to researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, grit is a more accurate predictor of success than IQ, physical health, social intelligence or attractiveness.
Members of the Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 have been promoting the power of grit for decades through the Elks Hoop Shoot. The event, open to anyone between the ages of 8 and 13, will be held this year on Sunday, Nov. 3, in the gym at Park Elementary School, 50 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and the contest will begin at 12:30 p.m.
“The Hoop Shoot started in 1946 at national level,” said Valerie Kissinger, chair of the local event. “At first, it was just boys, but in ‘74, they allowed girls to enter.” Over the years, Columbia’s event has drawn strong participation, but that dwindled a bit since
COVID, so organizers are hoping to build the event back up to its pre-pandemic level.
For the free-throw competition, children are divided into three age groups and separated by gender. Each participant may take warm-up shots and then will attempt to make as many baskets as possible in 25 shots.
Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place finishers, and the top scorer in each division will move on to a district competition in January 2025.
“From there, winners will go to the state competition in March and then on to the regional competition and to the finals, which will be held in April in Chicago,” Kissinger said. “In the past, we have had people move on to states, but we haven’t had anyone go to nationals. We’d love to see that happen.”
At the national event, six finalists are crowned national champions, and their names are displayed in the Naismith

Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
The Hoop Shoot is open to anyone in the age range from any area, and participants do not have to be members of a basketball team to participate.
Members of the Columbia High School basketball team will volunteer at the event, helping with rebounds and serving as role models for the younger kids, Kissinger said.
The mission of the event is to have fun but also to help students set a goal, she explained.
“I think a competition like this is good for kids because it’s something they can practice and strive for,” she shared.
“They start building that grit and determination, and that helps them throughout their life.”

to the community, said volunteer Robin Gamby.
“We do a lot of things for the community,” she said, noting that the organization participates in National Night Out and hosts a Flag Day event. “We want to make an impact, and the Hoop Shoot is a way for us to reach out to kids in the community.”
The Hoop Shoot is part of the organization’s charitable arm, the Elks National Foundation (ENF).
The ENF strives to build stronger communities through programs that support youths, serve veterans and meet local needs.

Participants who register by Friday, Oct. 25, will be entered in a drawing for Dick’s Sporting Goods gift cards. Preregistration is encouraged for the event, but it is not required.

for participants. Manor Township also provided a construction vehicle for a candy drop, which will take place during this year’s event as well. Additional participating first responders will include firefighters and police officers from East Hempfield Township, Pequea Township and Millersville Borough, as well as members of Blue Rock Fire Rescue. Representatives of Snyder Funeral Home will hand out candy from a hearse. “The fire and police departments really engage with the kids, and the kids love it,” Herman said.
This is the second year VFW Post 7294 will host a Trunk or Treat. Although the organization often hosts events to celebrate holidays such as Christmas and Easter, it had never held a Hal -
loween-themed event until 2023.
“I have a young son, and I enjoy taking him to other Trunk or Treats, so I thought, ‘Why don’t we try this?’” said Herman. “It turned out bigger than we could have hoped for or imagined. We’re so grateful for the love and support shown by the community.”
In addition to serving as a free, family event for the community, VFW Post 7294’s Trunk or Treat gives its members and local veterans an opportunity to connect with their neighbors and share the Halloween spirit. “They love to see the kids come out and have fun,” said Herman. “They join in sometimes, too - it brings out the kid in them.”

proceed along a 1.5-mile route that includes sections of Manor, South Fourth, Union, South Second, Locust and South Sixth streets.
The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, a men’s service organization. This year’s parade theme is “Food Fiesta,” and both participants and spectators are encouraged to wear costumes reflecting the theme.
“This year’s parade is shaping up to be one of the biggest in years,” said John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer. “We already have more units registered than we did last year. It’s a great way for people to come together for an evening of fun with family and friends.”
The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The procession will include high school marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, Scout troops,
fire companies, floats, walking groups, businesses and a steam calliope as the final entry. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories, including baton groups, floats, walking groups and individuals. Grunden explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate entrants on their overall appearance and performance. This helps ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to offer, including elements that might have been missed if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area.
Jeff Groff, a lifelong resident of the Columbia area, will serve as grand marshal. He and his wife, Joan, will ride in a horsedrawn carriage at the front of the parade.
“Jeff’s dedication to serving the community runs deep,” said Paul Resch, president of the Lions Club. “Whether it’s driving two hours to help clear brush at the Lions Beacon Lodge Camp for blind and disabled children or pitching in here in town to put up American flags, pick up trash or support educational projects like The Edible Classroom, Jeff is always willing to lend a hand where there’s a need. The only thing that surpasses his long list of volunteer efforts is the generosity of his heart.”
Groff has volunteered with numerous organizations, including the former Columbia Jaycees, which sponsored the parade for many years. He serves as president of the Columbia Park Rangers, a volunteer group he helped found more than 20 years ago. He also assists with repair work at Mount Bethel Cemetery, serves with the
Columbia Shade Tree Commission and volunteers with projects at Glatfelter Memorial Field. Outside of Columbia, he has helped Lancaster Conservancy and Penn State Extension with tree planting, maintenance and invasive species clearing and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, among other organizations.
“It has been wonderful to be a part of Columbia organizations for several decades and stay involved with the parade throughout,” Groff said. “I’ve also been given the opportunity to participate in many projects and experiences while meeting people along with enhancing and sharing my skill set while contributing to a better world.”
For more information on the parade or to register, call John or Cheryl Grunden at 717-305-8348 or email parade@columbialions .org. Online registration is available at https://columbialions.org.
