Prayers And Encouragement - Local Families Adopt Cops By Ann Mead Ash
Tina Edgell (left) and Sue Esh have both led Adopt A Cop efforts in recent months. Esh helped find families to adopt 133 Lancaster police department officers, and Edgell found families for the East Lampeter and West Earl police officers. The families provide encouragement to their adoptees.
On June 11, Sue Esh of Gordonville was trying to take a nap, but her phone kept beeping. The beeping was alerting Esh to a text from her sister who lives in Tennessee. “She was texting and saying I needed to do something for the Lancaster police,” recalled Esh, whose sister was reacting to a Facebook post from leadership at the Lancaster City Bureau of Police. Esh reposted the item, asking others what could be done to support local officers. “A friend messaged me about a nephew who graduated. (She said that) the school held an adopt-a-graduate program and (she told me) how meaningful that was,” reported Esh. The friend, Verna Fisher, asked if something similar could be done for the police, adding that if Esh would organize the program, she would help.
Through friends, Esh was able to connect with Lancaster Chief of Police Jarrad Berkihiser. On June 15, Esh received permission to organize Adopt A Cop in order to support 133 Lancaster police department officers. Using a Facebook event page, Esh put the word out to family and friends. Within 48 hours, all 133 officers were adopted. About a week later, a volunteer with Adopt A Cop was looking for gift cards to give to the officers. When the volunteer posted on a group page that both Esh and Tina Edgell belong to, Edgell took notice and messaged Esh. With Esh’s guidance, Edgell set up Adopt A Cop programs for East Lampeter Township and West Earl’s finest. All the officers were adopted the same day Edgell asked for volunteer families, June 22. The date was especially important because it was the day after Linda Stoltzfoos disappeared and members of
the East Lampeter Police Department began working 12- to 16-hour shifts. Drawing from the adopting families, she was able to arrange nightly meals for the department for the rest of that week. Esh and Edgell both asked families to take certain actions to support officers. “I stress praying for them as the No. 1 thing and then cards of encouragement,” said Edgell, noting that often when families make a snack for their officer, they decide to bring enough for all the police department members to enjoy. Gift cards and movie baskets are another way to offer support. Friends of Esh’s have taken it upon themselves to set up similar programs for the East Earl and New Holland departments. Adoptive families are allowed to share their email address with their officer, but it is up to the officer to initiate contact. Esh said that often See Local Families pg 3

COBYS To Offer Free Online Educational Classes Hiking In Green
Abby Keiser, director, recently announced that the Family Life Education Department at COBYS Family Services, Lancaster, is offering free online support classes.

Local families now have an opportunity to receive support and educational services all without leaving their homes thanks to online programming being offered by the Family Life Education Department at COBYS Family Services, Lancaster. Among the virtual programs being offered is a kinship support program, which is taking place on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 19. The program is open to kinship caregivers - those who are raising a relative’s child. During the sessions, grandparents, aunts and uncles and others who have taken on the new role of caregiver can talk about topics specific to kinship care and network with other people in similar situations. “We are doing everything virtually to break down time barriers. These families are overwhelmed because they are taking care of children they were not expecting to take care of lovingly and open-armed,” said Abby Keiser, director of Family Life Services. “We are able to provide the services; they don’t have to bring their children to a building. They can even be in pajamas.”
Outdoor exercise is encouraged during COVID-19 restrictions as a way to stay healthy and positive and maybe even increase defenses against disease. Benefits of exercise may include lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while improving strength, balance, and coordination. Social distancing is usually easier when exercising outside, as well. A variety of items, including quilts, jewelry and sports memorabilia, will be offered as part of a Hospice & Community Care virtual auction to be held from Sept. 1 through 15.

When she named the officer it was to be given to, the sergeant standing nearby identified himself as that officer. On July 18, Esh took food to the Lancaster station as part of a large support effort held that day, and she had the opportunity to meet the officer she adopted. “He was so thankful, Esh recalled. “He said, ‘I mean it when I say that the words of encouragement mean as much as the gifts,’ she said.
Esh cited COVID-19 restrictions as part of her inspiration for reaching out to local first responders. “Since I was 16, I planned to take cookies to the police officers, she said. “I thought it would be so much fun, and I never did it. During the quarantine, she was stuck at home, so she made cookies and a cheese platter for the officers at the East Lampeter station and the state police barracks on Lincoln Highway. She has more plans to find ways to support the Lancaster officers in the future. Edgell noted that the effort
has been uplifting for her during the restrictive phases of the last several months. “This has been the best thing during COVID, she said, adding that some texts and emails she has received from grateful officers have brought her to tears. “I forward them to (the adoptive) families, she said.

People have been coming for years and we did not want to give up on that. On June 10, the decision was made to hold the auction virtually. This year, the auction will feature about 1,000 items. “We will auction off higher-end items quilts, artwork, jewelry, vacation getaways, gift baskets and sports memorabilia, Minardi said. “We are in the process of photographing those items and building the website. As part of the process, people will be able to visit the website, click on the items they are interested in and then bid on them. “People will (have time) to peruse and get comfortable with this format. Traditionally, Hospice & Community Care (HCC) holds its annual Labor Day Auction at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, and the event features nearly 10,000 items on the auction block and a variety of food selections sold on-site. Nearly 3,500 people attend the two-day event annually. This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event has been scaled down and will be held virtually from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Sept. 15. “This is our 26th year, and we’ve held it in different places over the years because it has grown exponentially, said Coco Minardi, donor relations manager. “The first auction we had was in an outdoor area at a fire company. We made $1,800. Last year we raised $877,000. It is the backbone of our fundraising operation here at hospice. Items featured at the auction are donated by the community. “Typically, we will start collecting auction items the day after the auction for the following year, Minardi explained. “We have a wonderful generous sponsor who has a warehouse space and they donate that. Sometimes we get high-end items like jewelry and original artwork, and those are stored in a secure location at hospice. Discussions about the fate of the 2020 auction began in March soon after the stay-at-home order was issued. “We went out

ta are located along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which can be accessed from Columbia, Marietta, or Bainbridge. Holloway said it is a paved trail often used for running and biking in addition to hiking. The trail, which runs along the Susquehanna River, features some abandoned buildings and the cliffs, actually remnants of a limestone quarry. “It’s a pretty overlook with the white cliffs, and you’re walking along the railroad tracks, which is kind of cool,” said Holloway. For short hikes, Holloway recommends Ray’s Woods, 44 Laurel Drive, Holtwood, and the Farmingdale Trail in Noel Dorwart Memorial Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster. For more moderately challenging hikes, Holloway recommends the loop at Steinman Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea, and combining trails at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, 100 Museum Road, Stevens, where she has spent up to three hours hiking. Because Holloway lives in Penn Manor School District, many of the trails she has discussed on the page are in that area. For a good workout, she heads to Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve, reporting that that the trail is a loop of nearly 4 miles with hilly terrain. Kelly’s Run can be found at 199 Street Road, T397, Holtwood.

Kristen Holloway, founder of the Facebook page Day Hikes of Lancaster County PA, has always been a hiker. During the pandemic, she has been trying to hike at least weekly alone and with family members. “When I lived in San Diego, I found this book of day hikes of San Diego County,” said Holloway, who set herself a goal of visiting all the trails in the book while she lived there. After returning to her native Lancaster County, Holloway decided a Facebook page could offer other avid hikers the same kind of information she had found in the book - trails that offer beautiful scenery along with varying degrees of difficulty. “I knew there were all these great hikes, but I knew there were some I didn’t know about,” said Holloway. “I was looking for one place that had all the good hikes, so I wanted to put something together so that people would know what’s out there.” Trails that are good for a variety of activities include the Enola Low Grade Trail, which can be accessed from a number of points in the county - the Turkey Hill Trail Head in Manor Township, Sigman Road in Pequea Township, and Fairview Road in Strasburg Township. The trail has a crushed stone surface and is a favorite of walkers. The White Cliffs of Conoy in Mariet-
Holloway said that hiking has been a family tradition. “My parents took us hiking a lot as kids,” she shared. “It’s fun, but it’s a good way to get exercise.” When Holloway hikes with her children, she likes to visit the Lancaster Conservancy Trout Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea (Holtwood). “Trout Run is great for those who like to play in the water,” she said. For green and shady hikes, Holloway recommends Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Preserve, located off Frogtown Road, Pequea. Other scenic trails on Holloway’s list include Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve, 857 Green Hill Road South, Conestoga, in Martic Township and House Rock Nature Preserve, 370 House Rock Road, Pequea. Holloway appreciates the beauty of the outdoors during solitary ventures. “I like to hike by myself,” she said. “It’s meditative, so it’s time to be in my thoughts and be in nature. You take more in when you’re by yourself.” The Facebook page Holloway founded allows her to combine her interests in hiking and photography. “I have a list of 25 more hikes to investigate that aren’t on the page (yet),” she noted. For those who are averse to the summer heat and crowded trails, she recommends hiking in the early mornings before the sun is high and the parking lots fill up.

Inns, bed-and-breakfasts and boutique hotels across the country have recently launched an “Inn to Inn” virtual garden tour. Forty-two inns have pulled together to create a set of e-books that can be downloaded for free inspiration, a virtual pick-me-up or an in-person discount. Arranged as a trio and dividing the participating inns into three regions, each book tells the story of the various gardens with hundreds of links to visuals and discounts. The regions include Northeast; Southern; and West, Midwest and Abroad, which includes Canada and Italy. A list local of properties participating in the Inn to Inn garden tour in the Northeast region are Wild Wisteria Bed and Breakfast, Chadds Ford; Historic Smithton Inn, Ephrata; Twin Pine Manor B&B, Ephrata; Carriage Corner Bed & Breakfast, Intercourse; King’s Cottage Bed and Breakfast, Lancaster; Brownstone Colonial Inn, Reinholds; and The Artist’s Inn and Gallery, Terre Hill. All of the participating properties are part of Still Inn Business, a preparedness campaign that launched this spring to help innkeepers stay visible in travel media and sustain industry optimism. The pro bono campaign has more than 300 members. For complete details, readers may visit www.prlog.org and search for “Inns Across the U.S. and Beyond Launch Virtual Garden Tour With Offline Discounts to Lure Travelers.”

More Than $1 Million Donated To Children’s Hospitals The Giant Company announced on July 31 that more than $1 million was raised as part of its summer campaign in support of local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. The campaign, which kicked off June 1, marks the highest fundraising effort for the organization in the history of the company. A partner of the nonprofit organization for almost 25 years, Giant has recently introduced several new ways for customers to support their local CMN Hospital beyond making a donation during checkout. Customers can now make donations by rounding up their purchase at selfcheckout, donating CHOICE Rewards points and purchasing special reusable bags with a portion of each sale going to the charity. The company will continue raising funds for CMN Hospitals through the end of August. In March, to help provide assistance for the youngest members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic, Giant donated $250,000 to support COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Children’s National Hospital, Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and Penn State Children’s Hospital each received $50,000. Capital BlueCross and WellSpan Health recently announced a collaboration that gives pregnant women access to a convenient remote-monitoring application for prenatal care, which are designed to improve outcomes for mothers and babies. The organizations are offering expectant mothers who are WellSpan patients and Capital BlueCross members access to Babyscripts, a mobile app that allows them to have access to crucial prenatal health information throughout pregnancy through weekly tasks, resources, and tracking. The program allows expectant mothers to share health data, such as weight and blood pressure, with doctors and advanced practice providers in real time through internet-connected devices provided to the patient. Using this service, WellSpan providers can quickly and remotely identify warning signs, such as critical changes in blood pressure, that indicate the mother and the baby may require immediate medical assistance. The mobile app also provides health tips and other services to assist expectant mothers. The collaboration between WellSpan and Capital BlueCross brings together the payer and the provider by making data that is typically available to a provider also available to the payer to enable better clinical collaboration of the patient’s care needs. A new report from the BlueCross BlueShield Association found a greater number of women are entering pregnancy with pre-existing conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. The report noted the number of women experiencing both pregnancy and childbirth complications increased by 31.5% from 2014 to 2018. The collaboration between WellSpan and Capital BlueCross targets one of the key issues of this trend - barriers to care. By providing a remote app to patients, the organizations hope to improve access to prenatal care. This work between Capital BlueCross and WellSpan Health is one of many initiatives the organizations have been developing as part of the strategic partnership they announced a year ago. The mutual goal is to improve health and reduce costs for central Pennsylvania employers and health care consumers.

PENNYSAVER - Pequea Valley Edition - August 12, 2020 - 15
Baby boomers preparing for the future, caregivers considering alternatives for loved ones, and seniors who want to be aware of their living and care options are invited to take part in the 50plus Living virtual open house, which will be held online from Saturday, Aug. 15, through Monday, Aug. 31, at www.50pluslivingvirtual openhouse.com. Participation in the virtual open house is free. Due to COVID-19 concerns,
some 50-plus living campuses and agencies are not permitted to participate in live events, and some potential residents and clients are fearful of venturing out. Hosted by OLP Events, the 50plus Living virtual open house will enable interested individuals to virtually visit mature living communities and service providers online from the comfort of their home or office. Consumers considering their
housing options will be able to browse the virtual open house, which showcases local housing, home care, and hospice organizations. Prospective residents and community and agency representatives from all over central Pennsylvania can log in and out of the event at will to share information and interact virtually. Throughout the 17-day online event, guests can learn about living and care options, connect
with multiple living communities or care providers, view videos and/or photos of campuses, ask questions and have them answered on a personal basis, gain knowledge in order to make informed decisions, and make an appointment for an in-person tour when convenient. For more information on the 50plus Living virtual open house, readers may contact OLP Events at 717-285-1350.
