GSV Half/10K Introduces New Race Director Allison Cuthie Will Take Over 2021 Event

olding a safe but in-person event was a top goal for Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV) and now race director for the GSV Half Marathon and 10K scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 8 a.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “As a runner, I really want people to have the opportunity to run,” shared Cuthie, who noted that race volunteers, most of whom are GSV residents, have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie over than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than a decade. “I spent time … observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,”

H

recalled Cuthie, who said when it was time to start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas.

“On campus, we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “to-go” style dinner the night before the race; a wave start, which sends racers out at intervals, on race day; and a finisher’s zone Cuthie is calling

“Accomplishment Alley,” where pickup of medals and food will be streamlined. All awards will be mailed. A virtual option will be offered for those who choose that method of completing the run. As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On campus, we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events,” said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final decision before Monday,

Author Pens Bible Study During Shutdown BY ANN MEAD ASH

In Proverbs 31, the writer describes a woman of noble character. To many women studying the text, the characteristics of this woman may seem daunting. “A lot of women who read Proverbs 31 … walk away with a list of things to do,” said Lancaster County resident Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a Day Bible Study,” which was released in early September.

Hernandez-Tuten wanted to give women a different perspective on the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman. “This woman (in Proverbs 31) is doing all these things, but I don’t think it’s just a day in her life. I think these are seasons throughout her life,” noted Hernandez-Tuten. “You see her being productive, and you see her trusting God in the midst of all sorts of situations.”

One goal of the book was to show women that they can make significant contributions. “This whole theme of having influence as women no matter where we are is ... a theme I want to share with other women,” said Hernandez-Tuten. With that focus in mind, Hernandez-Tuten pictured her reader as serious but busy. “I think of this Bible study as something for women who have been doing devotionals and want to go a little deeper but aren’t ready to sit down for one or two hours,” said Hernandez-Tuten, who worked with her editor to offer readers studies that can be done in a short amount of time. The study is set up to be completed in seven weeks when the reader finishes a segment each day. Hernandez-Tuten noted that the study offers variety. “Some days are short devotions with a question and sometimes an activity,” she said. There is an “Act” section that encourages the reader to “put into action what (she) just learned.” The study can be done individually or in groups. With more than 20 years of experience in ministry, Hernandez-Tuten had considered writing a book later on in her life. When she was contacted by a publisher at the end of 2019, she decided to accept the

Certified Gardens Help Support Pollinators Penn State Master Gardeners has announced that of all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Lancaster County ranks first for certified pollinator-friendly gardens, with 100 certifications in the county out of 944 statewide. The Master Gardeners noted that Lancaster County also takes second place for the number of new certifications awarded in 2020. Penn State Master Gardeners created this certification program to encourage the gardening public to help protect pollinators, many of whose populations are declining.

According to Penn State entomologists, pollinators are responsible for one-third of the world’s food supply. However, habitat loss, disease, and contact with pesticides continue to threaten pollinator populations. The pollinator-friendly garden certification program encourages people to provide food and habitat for pollinators, which include native insects and other animals. In turn, pollinator-friendly certified gardens help protect plant diversity and food sources. Penn State Master Garden-

opportunity as a gift from God. Her feelings about the opportunity did not change, but her circumstances soon did. “I had signed a contract and was moving forward when COVID hit,” Hernandez-Tuten recalled. “I was not expecting to be writing during a pandemic with (all my family) in my house.” Calling the experience “the opposite of anything I had ever imagined,” Hernandez-Tuten set about writing with three school-age sons attending school virtually and her husband teaching school virtually. “The concentration part was really hard,” she remembered. Eventually, she asked her husband to take the boys on a brief camping trip so she could have the solitude she needed to meet her deadlines, and she completed the book in about four months. About a month after the book was published, Hernandez-Tuten’s father died. To honor her father’s legacy, Hernandez-Tuten held a “Buy a Book, Donate a Book!” event on Nov. 9 at The Mustard Seed Boutique in Lititz. For each one of her books that was sold that day, Hernandez-Tuten donated a book to a local women’s shelter to help fulfill her passion to help women who have been abused. Kerri Burns, food market director at The Factory Ministries, remembers when the organization decided to set up drive-through food distribution for clients during the first days of the COVID-19 shutdown in March. “I thought, ‘We can do this for a couple of weeks,’ recalled Burns. “I didn’t think we would do it long term. Burns was able to discontinue the regular drivethrough service at the end of October. A scaled-back, needsbased distribution was held in November, and the new Factory Market opened Dec. 8. Shoppers at the market will use Factory Bucks they have earned by taking classes and completing other actions. During the many months

that food was distributed to car trunks, six or seven volunteers arrived at The Factory on Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings to pack and distribute. “People got about 65 pounds of food in a bag, said Burns of the operation, which also involved frozen meat, lunch meat, and more. “We gave out breakfast foods and sometimes snack cakes or hot chocolate. It’s not always a typical food bag. According to Burns, the number of families receiving food more than tripled from 50 families a week to 160 families per week since March. “There have been no boundaries and no questions, said Burns. As she talked, Burns showed her humility, breaking into tears as she credited volunteers, local businesses,

and community members with stocking the pantry and distributing the food since the pandemic began. “The real heroes are the volunteers I have had working for months who come faithfully every Tuesday and Thursday, said Burns, who went on to mention volunteers who pick up food daily at local convenience and grocery stores or donate milk. She stressed the community response to Food Friday collections and the support of area businesses that stepped up to help. “It’s amazing, she said. Burns began life in Ohio, where her parents owned a bowling alley. She attended the University of Akron, where she received her certificate in interpreting for the deaf, learning in her senior year that she was hard of hearing. She moved to Lancaster County about 25 years ago and served in the educational field as a Title 1 tutor at Salisbury Elementary. About four years ago, she and her son, Brady, began volunteering in The Factory food pantry during the summer. In October 2019, a friend mentioned that The Factory was in need of a food pantry director. Burns interviewed with Shira Zimmerman, director of community resources, and was offered the position. “I thought I would like working here, but I didn’t know I would love it, said Burns. “The day I got the call that I was hired here, I thought, ‘I am all in.’ It was definitely the right choice. Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory and its mission may visit https://thefactoryministries .com.

Lancaster resident Nate Luvice is only 22 years old, but he is already concerned about the legacy he will leave. “I want to be sure that I leave my mark in this community,” said Luvice. “When people talk about me, they will say that (I) made a change.” Luvice is a full-time mentor and student services coordinator with Bench Mark, a program located on East Liberty Street in Lancaster city that focuses on giving opportunities to under-served youths through weightlifting. Luvice’s history with the program began seven years ago when he heard Bench Mark founder Will Kiefer speak at Phoenix Academy. Luvice noted that he specifically remembered Kiefer saying he wanted “to give back.” “That sounded strange to me,” said Luvice. “(In my experience), it (was) not usual for someone to want to help you with nothing in return.” Luvice and Kiefer began meeting for coffee. Luvice recalled that he had no identification. “(Kiefer) helped me get my driving permit and all my identification,” Luvice stated. While Luvice appreciated the help, he was not ready to fully commit to a new perspective. “I was scared of change,” Luvice admitted. “When you’re uncomfortable, you’re growing.” Luvice noted

that during that time period, he was in and out of jail, but Kiefer never gave up on him. In 2016, Luvice made a decision. “I was shot in the stomach, and I lost four liters of blood,” said Luvice, who still carries a bullet in his lower spine. “I knew it was time to change.” Early one morning while still in the hospital, Luvice reached out to Kiefer. “I said, ‘I really need your help. Now it’s time,’” recalled Luvice. Kiefer, who was on a mission trip to Honduras, wrote back that he would visit Luvice upon his return. “I thought he wouldn’t come. I thought I blew it,” said Luvice, “but sure enough he came to my house when I was recovering.” Since then, Luvice has turned to Kiefer without reservation. “He has been a father figure and mentor,” said Luvice, who noted the hardest part of adjusting was letting go of friends who were not supportive of the changes he was making for himself and for his two children. A little over a year ago, Kiefer offered Luvice a chance to become a mentor through a curriculum that developed into the Student Leadership Program, which helps build leaders in the community. “I started seeing that I could build a connection with kids because I look like them and I talk like them,” said Luvice. “I really enjoyed knowing I was involved (in their lives) when they would tell me they got a good grade on a test or they were helping their mom with something.” “Nate has done the full 180

The Lancaster Conservancy recently announced that Lancaster County is now a certified National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Community Wildlife Habitat. This certification shows Lancaster’s commitment to be a healthier, greener, and more wildlife-friendly county by creating wildlife habitat throughout its communities while also educating and engaging residents. The Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat initiative is a volunteer led effort that works with local property owners and organizations to encourage planting native plants, trees, and gardens that reduce stormwater runoff while providing habitat and food for wildlife and

pollinators. The NWF has certified more than 568 sites, including yards, schools, businesses, community gardens, parks, and places of worship. Each of these sites provides the four basic elements that all wildlife need to thrive food, water, cover, and places to raise young - while integrating sustainable gardening and landscaping practices. Linda Ferich, who spearheaded this initiative for the last three years, was recently notified that Lancaster County now has enough certified sites for the county to qualify as the first in the state of Pennsylvania with this designation. With a critical mass of certified gardens, the goal is to create corridors for wildlife to thrive. Ferich personally visited and advised well over 300 property owners over the past three years. Ferich, Allison Zechman, and Margie Hall also led Habitat Steward trainings where 40 community volunteers were taught to identify non-native and invasive plants, analyze gardens and sites, and implement other sustainable landscaping practices. In recent years, the group of volunteers also launched additional initiatives focused specifically on creating habitat for wildlife at schools and places of worship. Encouraging community members to create native habitat is also one of the primary goals of the Conservancy’s annual Lancaster Water Week slated to take place for its fourth year from Friday, June 4, through Saturday, June 12, 2021. Removing invasive plants, planting natives, and reimagining lawns are critical steps toward saving pollinators, cleaning the water, and enhancing livability in communities for the long term. Readers who would like to have a Community Wildlife Habitat Steward schedule a visit to assess their site may contact Ferich at lferich@ lancasterconservancy.org. To learn more and get started gardening for wildlife, readers may visit www.lancaster conservancy.org/habitat.

Pets May Help Humans Meet Goals

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC), in collaboration with Wildside Nature Tours, will present a free live webinar called “Lighter Side of Birding” on Thursday, Jan. 14, from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. This program will be recorded and available to all registrants, including those unable to attend the live presentation. Senior Wildside leader Adrian Binns will present travel stories featuring humor and photos. Binns has been guiding tours in Africa, India, Brazil, the U.S., and beyond for more than two decades. A naturalist and field ornithologist, Binns grew up in Morocco and England, where his birding experiences paved the way for a career in the birding community. He also worked as an ecological landscape designer, combin-

ing a lifelong interest in wildlife with expertise in crafting native-plant landscapes, particularly wetlands and water gardens, to attract birds, butterflies and other critters. Adrian is a past president of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) in Philadelphia, and he competed in the World Series of Birding as a member of the Nikon/DVOC team from 1997 to 2006, placing first five times, including logging a record number of 231 species found in 24 hours in New Jersey in 2003. To register, readers may visit www.lancasterbirdclub.org and click on “Events.” More information about the LCBC is available at www.lancasterbirdclub.org or www.facebook.com/lancaster birdclub.

owners may consider implementing a daily 15-minute break with their cat or dog to meditate. Owners should sit with their pet in a quiet, comfortable place and focus on being present, breathing deeply, and stroking their pet’s fur. Another option is to break out a yoga mat and do some poses with one’s cat or dog, which may not only ease stress, but also provides a gentle workout. In order to eat better this year, individuals can swap out fatty, sweet, or salty treats and start sharing some good-for-you snacks with their pet. Dogs can eat raw sunflower or pumpkin seeds, plus produce like watermelon, blackberries, cranberries, blueberries, bananas, apple slices, and baby carrots, but no grapes or raisins, which can be toxic. Cats can get in on the fun, too. Felines are able to enjoy fish like salmon or mackerel, meats like plain boiled chicken, and even a bit of cheese or egg. Owners should keep in mind that only 10% of a pet’s daily calories should come from treats. A veterinarian can confirm which foods are appropriate for a particular pet. If people have been stuck at home and cannot take another day staring at the same

right away, they can start with a 10-minute walk at their own pace and boost the time by 5-minute increments each week. Some cats even like to go for walks on a leash and harness or in a stroller. If owners are not sure how their cat would feel about this activity, they should do some research online to find the safest ways to introduce walking or strolling into their routine. If someone wants to make their steps count, they can download Best Friends’ ResQWalk app. Sponsored by Front of the Pack, ResQWalk not only tracks mileage, but it allows people to raise money for animal rescues and shelters in the U.S. every time they go walking. People can also be social in safe ways, accompanied by their pet. Pets are natural ice breakers, and people can meet like-minded pet owners who want to share about their own furry family members. A game of fetch at a local park can also be a fun, socially distant activity to enjoy with friends and family. Best Friends notes that spending quality time with pets can lessen anxiety, lower blood pressure, and bolster the immune system. To make the most of this natural stress relief potential, pet

It is that time of year again when many people make New Year’s resolutions. After a tumultuous 2020, it may be more important than ever to strive for physical, mental, and emotional balance. The good news is that readers’ pets might be able to help them reach their goals. Best Friends Animal Society, an animal welfare organization focused on making America a no-kill nation by 2025, has offered a few ways pets can be good resolution buddies. Everyone should keep in mind that masks should be worn, and leash laws and social distancing should be observed whenever anyone is in public. It is also wise to research hours of operation for any destination before a visit. One way that pets can help their humans keep their resolutions is to help them get moving. Dogs love to get exercise and do it with such enthusiasm, they are sure to make their owner smile as they head out the door. Walking at a vigorous pace for just 30 minutes five times a week can provide the moderately intensive cardiovascular exercise most physicians recommend.
