SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LVII • NO 5

Full Circle - New Pequea Baptist Employee Returns To Roots ast spring, when Tammy Shondelmyer first heard about the position of director of Next Generation Ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, she thought about her passion for rearing and nurturing children. “The job beckoned to me,” recalled Tammy. “A part of me said, ‘I think I would really enjoy that - making a different kind of investment in children.’” Tammy soon applied for the job at the church where her husband, Clint, serves as pastor of discipleship and where she was raised. Her father, Walter Venman, served as pastor there for more than 40 years. In April, she was offered the position, and she officially started in August. “I literally grew up here,” said Tammy, who now lives in the house where she was raised. She attended High Point Baptist Academy in Geigertown and after graduating went to Cedarville University in Ohio, later transferring to Philadelphia College of Bible, now Cairn University. She graduated in 1989

L

with degrees in education and Bible. Having met Clint at college in Philadelphia, Tammy soon married. The couple moved to Indiana, Pa., where Clint was pastoring a church. The couple later lived in Venice, Fla., and in Springfield, Va. Tammy began her teaching career in western Pennsylvania. She has taught kindergarten, several elementary grades, and English and language arts to middle-schoolers. After returning to the area, she taught ninth-grade English at Linville Hill Christian School in Gap. She noted that she has enjoyed teaching multiple grades. “I liked learning about each new age group, and I loved learning the nuances of that age group,” she said, adding that she has fond memories of her time at Linville Hill. In her new position at the church, Tammy was quickly dealing with the ramifications of COVID-19 restrictions in the church’s ministries that encompass children from birth to grade 12. Programs range from nursery care through Sunday school and youth group,

Leaving A Legacy: Mentor Touches The Future At Bench Mark

Lancaster resident Nate Luvice is only 22 years old, but he is already concerned about the legacy he will leave. “I want to be sure that I leave my mark in this community,” said Luvice. “When people talk about me, they will say that (I) made a change.” Luvice is a full-time mentor and student services coordinator with Bench Mark, a program located on East Liberty Street in Lancaster city

Melody Karick, the program director for Meadow View, Garden Spot Village’s (GSV) new memory support facility located on South Kinzer Avenue in New Holland, sees the new 40,000-squarefoot building, which includes two mirror-image sections named Amber and Pearl, as a mini version of GSV. “People live here as a community,” said Karick, gesturing to the Town Square area of the building, which includes a general store, cosmetology shop, bistro, and chapel. “They visit each other.” Karick noted that only the front door and the gates to the five outdoor

that focuses on giving opportunities to under-served youths through weightlifting. Luvice’s history with the program began seven years ago when he heard Bench Mark founder Will Kiefer speak at Phoenix Academy. Luvice noted that he specifically remembered Kiefer saying he wanted “to give back. “That sounded strange to me, said Luvice. “(In my experience), it (was) not usual for someone to want to help you with nothing in return. Luvice and Kiefer began meeting for coffee. Luvice recalled that he had no identification. “(Kiefer) helped me get my driving permit and all my identification, Luvice stated. While Luvice appreciated the help, he was not ready to fully commit to a new perspective. “I was scared of change, Luvice admitted. “When you’re uncomfortable, you’re growing. Luvice noted that during that time period, he was in and out of jail, but Kiefer never gave up on him. In 2016, Luvice made a decision. “I was shot in the stomach, and I lost four liters of blood, said Luvice, who still carries a bullet in his lower spine. “I knew it was time to change. Early one morning while still in the hospital, Luvice reached out to Kiefer. “I said, ‘I really need your help. Now it’s time,’ recalled Luvice. Kiefer, who was on a mission trip to Honduras, wrote back that he

The theatrical concert draws on letters, diaries, firsthand accounts, and the words of Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Walt Whitman. The virtual performances can be viewed on Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.; on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 3 and 7 p.m.; or on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m. The production will also be available to stream on demand any time from Jan. 24 to 31. would visit Luvice upon his return. “I thought he wouldn’t come. I thought I blew it, said Luvice, “but sure enough he came to my house when I was recovering. Since then, Luvice has turned to Kiefer without reservation. “He has been a father figure and mentor, said Luvice, who noted the hardest part of adjusting was letting go of friends who were not supportive of the changes he was making for himself and for his two children. A little over a year ago, Kiefer offered Luvice a chance to become a mentor through a curriculum that developed into the Student Leadership Program, which helps build leaders in the community. “I started seeing that I could build a connection with kids because I look like them and I talk like them, said Luvice. “I really enjoyed knowing I was

involved (in their lives) when they would tell me they got a good grade on a test or they were helping their mom with something. “Nate has done the full 180 degrees from where he was to where he is now, said Kiefer. “I have never seen anyone else give up what he had to give up to get there.

Luvice agreed, noting that he has no fear of the future. “I am not afraid to move forward, he said. “The mentors all build each other up. Bench Mark is currently open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. More information about the program may be found at www.benchmarkprogram.org.

Holding a safe but in-person event was a top goal for Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV) and now race director for the GSV Half Marathon and 10K scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 8 a.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “As a runner, I really want people to have the opportunity to run,” shared Cuthie, who noted that race volunteers, most of whom are GSV residents, have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie more than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than a decade. “I spent time … observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,” recalled Cuthie, who said when it was time to start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready

runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events,” said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final decision before Monday, March 1. “We hope to do (the best) we can for the runners, but we’re a retirement community, so we have more to think about than having a race,” she added. Cuthie, a resident of Mount Gretna, is wellknown in New Holland as

to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “to-go” style dinner the night before the race; a wave start, which sends racers out at intervals, on race day; and a finisher’s zone Cuthie is calling “Accomplishment Alley,” where pickup of medals and food will be streamlined. All awards will be mailed. A virtual option will be offered for those who choose that method of completing the run. As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On campus, we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including

volunteer led effort that works with local property owners and organizations to encourage planting native plants, trees, and gardens that reduce stormwater runoff while providing habitat and food for wildlife and pollinators. The NWF has certified more than 568 sites, including yards, schools, businesses, community gardens, parks, and places of worship. Each of these sites provides the four basic elements that all wildlife need to thrive - food, water, cover, and places to raise young - while integrating sustainable gardening and landscaping practices. Linda Ferich, who spearheaded this initiative for the last three years, was recently notified that Lancaster County now has enough certified

sites for the county to qualify as the first in the state of Pennsylvania with this designation. With a critical mass of certified gardens, the goal is to create corridors for wildlife to thrive. Ferich personally visited and advised well over 300 property owners over the past three years. Ferich, Allison Zechman, and Margie Hall also led Habitat Steward trainings where 40 community volunteers were taught to identify non-native and invasive plants, analyze gardens and sites, and implement other sustainable landscaping practices. In recent years, the group of volunteers also launched additional initiatives focused specifically on creating habitat for wildlife at schools and places of worship.

Dozens of Lancaster snow removal businesses have partnered with Lawn Love to offer a contactless, ondemand snow removal service that can be scheduled quickly and conveniently. Lancaster homeowners can now order snow removal instantly through the Lawn Love platform, using their smartphone or computer. Quotes are generated in less than two minutes using satellite imaging technology. Once the customer accepts the price, a local snow removal provider is assigned to the property. Lawn Love aims to provide a service that will have a positive impact on the lives of Lancaster homeowners and snow removal operators. By

using digital technology to make the quoting and payment process contactless, customers and operators can remain socially distanced. Lawn Love’s snow removal providers are all local operators with more than one season of experience. The platform aims to offer Lancaster providers a steady stream of new customers and business management tools. In addition to one-time services, users can schedule snow removal for the entire winter, without needing to

sign a contract. The company’s weather mapping software is designed to ensure that providers never miss a snow day. Lawn Love broke into the ondemand services scene in 2014. The company offers a wide range of yard services, including lawn mowing, aeration, weeding, gutter clearing, leaf removal and snow removal. Encouraging community members to create native habitat is also one of the primary goals of the Conservancy’s annual Lancaster Water Week slated to take place for its fourth year from Friday, June 4, through Saturday, June 12. Removing invasive plants, planting natives, and reimagining lawns are critical steps toward saving pollinators, cleaning the water, and enhancing livability in communities for the long term. Readers who would like to have a Community Wildlife Habitat Steward schedule a visit to assess their site may contact Ferich at lferich@ lancasterconservancy.org. courtyards are locked. Within the walls, residents may move about freely. The design is focused on allowing those with dementia to continue to live with normalcy. “Dementia is not a disease that needs to take normalcy (from patients),” Karick said. “It’s not the end of life. We just need to help them learn to live a new life with new purpose.” A training room located off Town Square will serve as a meeting place for clubs led by residents. Pointing out the donated items in the general store, Karick noted, “Shopping is a normal part of life.” She added that donated items in the store may be chosen by residents at no charge. To help residents become familiar with their surroundings, the building has been designed with cues they can follow. “There are two gray doors with no trim,” pointed out Karick. “Those doors are for team members.” A door between the two gray doors has trim and color because it is a restroom for all to use. In a neighborhood including five resident apartments, each door is a different color and has a different number of panels and a different door handle. Each also has a mailbox with the resident’s name.”We are giving several cues to what is their household and room,” explained Karick. Resident comfort and safety were paramount in the plan for the building and the care of its occupants. “When a resident gets out of bed, sensors will automatically turn on the bathroom light,” said Karick, who noted that when a resident returns to

bed, the lights will dim and go off. Wristbands worn by residents will notify care team members when a resident who normally needs assistance is out of bed. “If a patient falls, the band will alert the team member to the fall and the location,” said Karick, who added that a dashboard system allows team members to locate a patient and make sure he or she is safe. Smoke-safe areas located within the building can keep residents and staff safe should a fire occur. To help married couples remain together, Meadow View offers a few special independent living apartments attached to a resident’s room. “Everything in the apartment is dementia friendly,” said Karick, who explained a two-step process for using the stove or fireplace. The outside entrance must be activated with a code or key swipe to protect the spouse with dementia from wandering off. Should the independent spouse need to be away, the door to the apartment can be locked while the patient continues to be cared for by the Meadow View team. According to Karick, the creation of Meadow View, which welcomed residents in mid-September, was based on recognizing the need for memory support services. GSV leaders Steve Lindsey and Scott Miller invited her to bring her memory care team into the process of developing the new facility. “It was a great team effort,” Karick said. Readers who wish to learn more about Meadow View may call 717-355-6000.

sections, including Appetizers and Beverages; Soups and Salads; Vegetables and Side Dishes; Main Dishes; Breads and Rolls; Desserts; Cookies and Candy; and This and That. “We began compiling the recipes for the cookbook in the beginning of October; all recipes were due by the end of October,” explained Scout mom Heather Jackson. “All Scouts were asked to submit as many recipes as they would like. They could ask anyone in their family for recipes.” Many of the recipes in the book are distinct because they are unique to each family, such as “Grandma’s Gobs,” which are sandwich cookies filled with icing, and “Porcupine Meatballs,” which are meatballs containing rice. Some recipes use slow cookers, such as the one for “Absolutely Ultimate Potato Soup.” There is also a recipe for slow cooker hot chocolate. Once the recipes were compiled, Jackson found a publishing company, Morris Press, which created the book. “They have a ‘type and save’ program, where we typed all the recipes into their program,” she said. “This program (also) allowed us to choose our art that was in the book as well as write a little history on our troop.” In addition to the history and the assortment of recipes, the cookbook contains many helpful hints for home cooks. This reference information includes a section on how to use and identify herbs and spices, baking hints, details

on how to buy the best fresh fruits and vegetables, measurement charts, cooking timetables and even a section on napkin folding. All of the recipes are included in the easy-to-use index. “It was a lot of work typing and putting together the book, but it was fun reading all the different and sometimes same recipes with the different families’ twists on them,” Jackson shared. Proceeds for each book will benefit troop members. Onethird will go to the whole troop to pay for activities and help with Scouts who have financial needs. One-third will go to each Scout’s High Adventure account, which pay for trips to Camp Philmont, Sea Base or Algonquin. “The last third is for each Scout to

use for our monthly camping trips or to pay yearly dues,” Jackson noted. Jackson said the cookbook has been a good way to raise money during the pandemic. “Most of the construction was done online,” she noted. “Pickup for books while selling (can) be contactless. I know personally my Scout has sold most of the books through asking family members to post on their social media pages. We did post on the Octorara Community Facebook page as well.” Cookbooks are also being sold at the Brass Eagle Restaurant, 5725 Lincoln Highway, Gap, and at Turkey Hill’s Gap location. People may also order cookbooks by emailing hajackson1515 @gmail.com.

.918 Club Plans Meeting, Seeks Support The .918 Club will hold its regular monthly meeting in the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress and Book Arts, 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. There is plenty of free parking. The .918 Club seeks to keep the craft of letterpress printing alive in Lancaster County through presenting demonstrations at the Heritage Press Museum to illustrate the history of printing and through providing a working letterpress job shop. During meetings, volunteers of the Heritage Press Museum share ideas and suggestions concerning the educational demonstrations and sign up to operate the print shop. Meetings also provide a place for people to learn

about letterpress printing or develop the skills to become volunteers in the print shop. The first 15 to 20 minutes of the Jan. 27 gathering will be devoted to a business meeting. A presentation or video on some aspect of printing history will be presented, time permitting. The meeting will conclude with a show and tell, and attendees are invited to bring something they printed or discovered that was printed by letterpress. Additionally, the club is seeking support through payment of dues and donations to the club. Because outside groups are currently not permitted to use the campus facilities at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, the .918 Club is receiving all its income from membership

dues, donations, and museum sales. Dues-paying members of the .918 Club will receive a membership card, a custom printed membership certificate, and regular email updates of all club meetings and events. In addition, members will be able to attend monthly meetings with full voting privileges, participate in instructional and certification workshops, schedule studio time in the center for personal use, and sell personally produced items in the Best Impression Letterpress Museum Gift Shop. Members will also receive up to a 50% discount on workshops. For more information or to become a member, readers may visit www.918club.org.

“I truly believe that my greatest joy in life, and my greatest responsibility, is to be the best wife and mom I can be,” said Annie Friedrichs, a member of the Change of Pace (COP) leadership team. COP is a seasonal Bible study program sponsored by Friendship Foundation, Inc. “COP has given us a great opportunity to come together and open God’s Word to gain the wisdom and understanding He offers,” continued Friedrichs. Two studies will be offered at Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola. “Sermon on the Mount” by Jen Wilkens will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays from Jan. 25 through March 22. The same study will be offered on Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. from Jan. 28 through April 1. Child care will be offered for the Thursday morning session. The second study, Family Life’s “The Art of Parenting” by Dennis and Barbara Rainey, will meet Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. from Feb. 4 through April 1. The “Sermon on the Mount” study will encourage participants to think differently about what it means to be a follower of Jesus and how following Christ challenged Christians to find joy in the words of Jesus. COP Central facilitator Noel Connell notes that the Sermon on the Mount includes the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and a discussion of religious devotion, ambition, and relation-

ships. “It seems rather timely to be studying about being a peacemaker, being salt and light in a dark world and also our relationships with others,” said Connell. Connell added that rather than dividing the sermon, the author has set up the study so that participants will consider the whole sermon to see how they should navigate the world we live in. “The Art of Parenting” is a video-based study designed to help parents find new ways to integrate faith into everyday moments and to celebrate healthy breakthroughs in the parenting journey. The study will be facilitated by Dr. John and Debbie Tornfelt, who bring 40 years of parenting and ministry to the conversation. Recent events have caused families to experience unprecedented isolation and cultural challenges that have made many parents wary of the future. Considering the subject matter of the study, COP Central facilitators Deb and Keith Garner referenced verses in Deuteronomy and Proverbs that apply to raising children, noting, “We have an obligation as parents and grandparents to teach our children the ways of the Lord.” They referred to the study as one that will help equip parents and grandparents to help children navigate the cultural waters. Readers who would like to obtain more information or preregister, may call 717-5195220, email copcbible studies@gmail.com, or visit www.changeofpacecentral .webs.com.

The proceeds from KnightQuest: Combat Hunger will benefit a total of 10 food banks and pantries, including Central Penn College Food Pantry, which received food items only; Lancaster County Food Hub; Lebanon County Christian Ministries; and York County Food Bank. Monetary and food donations were scheduled to be delivered to the area food banks and pantries during the weeks prior to Christmas. Advoz: Mediation & Restorative Practices will offer an online Circle Process training from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday to Friday, Feb. 3 to 5. Readers may contact chris@advoz.org questions about accessibility. A certificate of completion for 21 training hours will be presented to each participant upon conclusion of the three days. This intermediate training requires either experience in Advoz’s Mediation and Restorative Justice programs, the Intro Training in Conflict, Communication & Culture, or an equivalent.
