Hamming It Up For Winter Field Day Patriotic Stitchers Plan Fundraiser

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Twice a year, amateur radio operators colloquially known as ham radio operators - set up their equipment out of doors and attempt to contact as many people around the globe as possible. “We’re practicing for emergencies, explained Red Rose Repeater Association (RRRA) president Daniel Boone of Willow Street. “Disasters don’t know the seasons of the year. Field days are 24-hour events in order to include amateur radio enthusiasts in all time zones, as well as to give individuals experience broadcasting during the day and night. The position of the sun impacts the distance radio waves travel, Boone said. “We have access to solar radiation reports, Boone remarked. “The next thing you know, you’re talking to a guy in Israel on 5 watts.

The mission of the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans is to provide handmade quilts and afghans to several area hospice centers where they are distributed to veterans. Currently, creations are delivered to the Coatesville and Lebanon VA hospitals, AseraCare Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Services, and Hospice & Community Care. The Stitchers is a committee of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA). Members of the Stitchers volunteer their time, and necessary supplies have generally been donated by the volunteers for the more than 125 blankets

she was not an alumna ‌ until now. “I have been a trustee of the school since 2010,â€? explained Tracey, who noted that she returned to Pennyslvania in 2008 when her father passed. She met Dr. Peter Teague and became involved in the capital campaign for the Teague Learning Commons, where the library named for her parents is located, and worked with development and fundraising for the Charles Frey Academic Center. “It was near and dear to my father and mother to support the school and scholarships,â€? said Tracey, who also took over her father’s publishing and speaking business when she came back to the area. Amber Pavalko of Bowmansville wanted to go for bicycle rides with her 6-year-old daughter, Addie. What should be a simple desire is complicated by the fact that Amber has Chiari malformation, a neurological condition in which the brain extends into the spinal column. Chiari is associated with a variety of other physical problems including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), an inheritable connective tissue disorder, and syringomyelia, which occurs when a syrinx, a cyst caused by a buildup of fluid, forms in the spinal cord. Amber has been dealing with the issues related to Chiari since the birth of her daughter in July 2013. In the time since, she has been undergoing both physical and occupational therapy, but her health issues have made it difficult for her to make progress in either See Bicycle pg 12

A First Friday reception for “From Scribbles to More Refined Scribbles - A Journey of a Literal Lifetime,” an art exhibit featuring the work of Lancaster native Jenni Buffington, will be held at the Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will include time to meet the artist, live music and food. During a stay at her mother’s house after an illness, the artist discovered that her mother had held on to every piece of artwork Buffington had ever created, which developed into the idea to hold a concept show. The upcoming exhibit will showcase Buffington’s progression as an artist. The reception will feature live music by Stephen Diehl, another Lancaster native, who will perform original acoustic melodies. that have been given to veterans so far. Now, the group has decided to raise funds for supplies with a live auction on Saturday, Feb. 22. The live auction, which will feature baskets, quilts, and more, will be held in the Veterans Hall of the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The kitchen will open at 11:30 a.m., and the live auction will begin at 1 p.m. The event will feature prizes and giveaways as well. An auction preview will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the same location. Carl Pickel will serve as auctioneer. Organizers have endeavored to gather a variety items that will appeal to a wide audience. Among the many items that will be auctioned off will be up to 50 gift baskets, with themes including toy, beach, spa, country, gardening, dog, cat, and Italian night. A number of quilts, including twin-size quilts, wall hangings, and lap quilts in a variety of themes, will go over the block. Organizers noted that they have a flower quilt, a dog quilt, and a garden quilt. One unusual quilt was created with a Three Stooges theme.

Paintings by a local artist and small pieces of handmade furniture will also be auctioned off. Prizes and giveaways will include a refurbished computer and homemade items such as sweaters. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, may be purchased by calling 717-553-3161 or 717-888-3772. Food items, which will be included in the ticket price, will be pulled pork sandwiches; chips; beverages, such as water, soda, and coffee; and desserts. The Stitchers started about two years ago when a woman who was a social worker at a Lancaster hospice wanted to do something for veterans. The woman consulted her mother, and the pair thought making an afghan or quilt would be a good way to honor veterans. Kathy Baker and Jean Summers signed on to help, and when the founder of the group could not continue running the organization, the duo took over, renaming the organization Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. Some donated quilts come from stitchers as far away as New York and Virginia.

Winter Field Day from pg 1 Radio broadcasting is licensed by the FCC, and that includes amateur radio operators as well. “If somebody would like to get a license, we would like to help them,” said RRRA vice president Leon Hess of East Earl. Although the RRRA does not offer exam preparation, it does assist in offering the tests, and it will refer people to training classes in the region. The RRRA has many opportunities for those who become licensed. “For the exam, you use sponge memory. We don’t want to lose those people who get wrung out for the test,” Rice commented. “About half take the exam but never use it. When you start using the skills … (your knowledge) becomes more meaningful.” “It’s like getting your driver’s license and never using it,” Boone added. The RRRA leaders hope that newly licensed or inexperienced operators, as well as anyone with an interest in amateur radio, will participate in the Winter Field Day, which will be held from 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, to 2 p.m. on

Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Welsh Mountain Community Center, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The event is sponsored by the Winter Field Day Association. The RRRA will have three stations set up, and licensed operators may use the equipment to contact other operators. Additionally, as part of its goal to welcome newcomers, several seminars will be offered during the event, and interested individuals may learn about safety and technical skills such as how to cut out interfering signals. Events like the Winter Field Day enable amateur radio operators to make connections without the pressure of a stressful situation. Being able to legally and comfortably operate a ham radio can open doors to friendship, an enjoyable hobby, and public service, Boone said, adding that ham radios can operate in areas where cellphones cannot. The RRRA used to drill for Three Mile Island emergencies and still practices in case of an incident at the nuclear power plant in Peach Bottom. Two seconds after the first

bomb was detonated at the Boston Marathon in 2013, the cellphone towers in a 20-mile radius were shut down. A network for 200 ham radio operators established communication between all the race checkpoints and the hospital. Several club members support endurance races in rural areas in Pennsylvania and New Jersey as well as the New York City Marathon, and Boone is regularly stationed at mile 15 of the marathon. “We’re there to watch the runners - make sure they’re not ill, not falling down - and the crowds, that nobody is causing trouble,” Boone said. There is no cost to participate in or attend the Winter Field Day. Visitors are welcome to drop in at any time during the 24-hour event, and they may bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight. Registration is requested so the RRRA can plan to have enough food ready for guests, and readers may email Rice at W3COB@arrl.net or call Boone at 717-406-6382 to register. Additional information about the RRRA is available at www.w3rrr.org.

If asked whether they would be happy in a world without insects, some people might answer in the affirmative. However, such a scenario would be disastrous for Earth and its inhabitants, entomologists have said. “Insects are integral to the health of the planet and people,” explained Michael Skvarla, director of the Insect Identification Laboratory at Penn State University (PSU). “They pollinate our crops and feed on pests, help decompose dead animals, form the base of food webs, and stabilize natural environments.” PSU Department of Entomology graduate students Brooke Lawrence and Ginamaria Roman Echevarria will offer a perspective on the worldwide decline of insects in their keynote presentation, “A World of Insects: The Good, the Bad, and the Changes,” at the Penn State Extension Lancaster County annual meeting and social event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. In keeping with the family-friendly style of the evening, the presentation will be appropriate for people of all ages and will have an interactive component. Attendees will have an

opportunity to view exhibits featuring stream macroinvertebrates and native plants for insects. The event will begin with a social hour, during which guests may enjoy foods and beverages provided by local commodity groups and vendors. The program will follow. In addition to learning about the importance of insects’ roles in agriculture and the environment, attendees will be introduced to Brent Hales, the new director of Penn State Extension, who will share about Lancaster County Extension programs, including 4-H youth development and Master Gardeners. Guests will also hear the latest news regarding spotted lanternfly research and receive an overview of “Hemp: Lancaster County’s Heritage Crop.” In addition to his role as Extension director, Hales serves as an associate dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. He received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Brigham Young University, a master’s degree in sociology from Middle Tennessee State University, and a doctorate in rural sociology from Iowa State University. Hales previously served as the

senior associate dean and CFO of the University of Minnesota Extension, an associate dean for the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality, and the director of the University of Minnesota Crookston, Economic Development Authority University Center. Hales’ primary area of research is holistic community and economic development and entrepreneurship. He is the founder of the Southern Entrepreneurship Program, which teaches entrepreneurship skills to high school and community college students and to displaced workers throughout the United States and around the globe. He is also a past president of the Community Development Society. Penn State Extension is an educational network that gives people in each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties access to Penn State’s resources and expertise. It is funded through state and county governments, as well as the United States Department of Agriculture. Through this county-based partnership, Penn State Extension educators, faculty members, and local volunteers work together to share research-based information with local residents.

Lazar led the team in scoring at Brandywine Heights on Saturday, scoring 11 points. He nailed three treys in the process. Colyer scored nine and Liney seven points. The Braves edged the Bullets 34-31. Pequea’s four-game win streak came to an end on Tuesday night at home against Kennard-Dale. The Rams held the Braves (6-9) to only four points in the third quarter, opening up their one-point halftime edge to a six-point lead heading into the fourth. They managed to hold off the Braves by a 52-43 margin despite Colyer lighting up the scoreboard with 18 points. Stoltzfus scored nine points - all from three-point range. “We have had a few close losses this year,” Rittenhouse noted, referring to six of PV’s nine losses being by less than 10 points. We have put in a lot of work in this offseason.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Basketball is a game of momentum changes. If you look at the non-league girls’ basketball game between Pequea Valley and Kennard-Dale on Tuesday, January 14, the line score tells you just that. The Braves went into the second quarter trailing the Rams by merely a single point. However, the home team increased that lead to 29-24 and outscored Pequea 20-7 in the third quarter en route to a 56-47 win. “We let it get away from us in the third quarter,” Jason McDonald, the Braves’ head coach, commented. “We had a lot of turnovers and they took advantage of it. You take away three minutes of the third quarter and it’s a different outcome.” The Braves did make a run for it in the final stanza, outscoring the Rams 16-7. The loss dropped the Braves to 10-4 on the year. Caroline Horst led the team with 18 points, scoring all of her points from the field. “Caroline does it all,” McDonald said. “She scores, rebounds, steals, blocks shots, She and Bethany Bills have been doing it all, especially with [senior] Abbey Leslie getting hurt.” Bills poured in 13 points while 5-foot-9 sophomore Rebecca Cox put up 10 points. Clara Neff scored four points. “Clara Neff and Rebecca Cox have Photo by Bob Devonshire been stepping up,” McDonald said. Field Of Screams Supports RMHC

Don Feldman (left), Graham Dennis (center), and Ty Fischer will lead the “Great Books for the Grown Ups” series at Veritas Academy in Leola beginning on Monday, Jan. 27.

Field of Screams presented a check in the amount of $15,020 to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) on Dec. 12, 2019. Of the donation, $11,520 will go directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania and $3,500 will go directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeastern PA. Field of Screams works with a number of charities every year and has been partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities since 2009. Since this time, Field of Screams has donated $115,540 to Ronald McDonald House Charities. The mission of RMHC is to create, find, and support programs that directly improve the health

Veritas Academy invites adults who love literature and enjoy discussing history, culture, and theology to join in an Adult Discussion Seminar Series titled “Great Books for the Grown Ups.” The series will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays from Jan. 27 through April 20 at Veritas Academy, 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola. The course will examine three influential works of literature - ranging from ancient to modern times - in light of the culture and climate of their time and today. The seminar discussion will encompass theology, history, politics, morality, and more. “Great Books for the Grown Ups” is modeled after Veritas Academy’s Omnibus course program, a cornerstone class that all secondary students take each year. Omnibus is a discussion-based class that examines literature, civics, history, theology, and culture of a given time period all in one course. The format allows students to gain a broader scope and appreciation of not only the great books of that time,

but also the entire cultural climate, how it all related to the church, and how it has shaped the world today. The adult Omnibus class affords everyone the same opportunity to deepen their appreciation for great literature and their understanding of history, faith, and the complexities of modern culture. The texts to be discussed in this year’s class are Plato’s “Crito” and “The Apology of Socrates,” Milton’s “Paradise Lost,” and Abraham Lincoln’s speeches. The discussions will be led by Graham Dennis, dean of students and Omnibus teacher at Veritas Academy; Ty Fischer, head of school and Omnibus teacher at Veritas Academy; and Donald Feldman, founder of Keystone Business Transitions and president of Congregation Degel Israel in Lancaster. Separate fees have been set for the full series and per session. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.veritasacademy.com/ great-books.

and well-being of children and their families. Programs include the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, the Ronald McDonald Family Room and Hospitality Cart at Penn State Children’s Hospital, and the Ronald McDonald Hospitality Kiosk at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. The programs are offered at no cost to the families, and RMHC relies on the generosity of the community to be able to keep its services free for families that need them. As the cost to keep a family together for one night at the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey is approximately $100, the Field of Screams donation to RMHC of Central Pennsylvania represents more than 110 family overnight stays.

Jim Schopf (left), co-owner of Field of Screams, presented a donation check to Steve Lescher (center), former president of the Central Pennsylvania McDonalds Co-op and vice president of the Susquehanna McDonalds Co-op, and Scott Kavlick, current president of the Susquehanna McDonalds Co-op.

Bible Institute in Pottersville, N.Y., for a year after graduating from high school. She then attended Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., for a year before earning an associate degree at the New Mexico Military Institute. She received an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. She finished with a Bachelor of Science, graduating as a commissioned officer and working on fighter jets. She served in the first Gulf War and the Bosnian War, and she lived in England, Italy, Germany, and Turkey. She followed her service career by working for Applied Materials in Austin, Texas, while she earned a Master of Business Administration in global management from the University of Phoenix. When LBC instituted its doctoral program, Tracey decided to earn her doctorate. She entered the program at the end of August in 2015. Unfortunately, the timing was tumultuous. “I had just been through a shift with the business and lost my older brother,” recalled Tracey. “I came into it really broken.” Rather than becoming discouraged, Tracey found solace in her studies. “The dissertation program was a source of inspiration and encouragement and camaraderie,” said Tracey. “When you’re hurting as a leader (and) you talk to other leaders, and they say, ‘Keep the faith. We’re going through (this too),’ it is a sense of great comfort.” Tracey’s dissertation was titled “Leader Emergence in an Organizational Crisis - A Case Study of Follower Self-Efficacy.” “Self-efficacy (means) motivation,” explained Tracey, who, as part of her research, studied a merger that almost did not occur. “In the merger, 90% of what went wrong could have been seen with due diligence,” she said, adding that she had a revelation about halfway through the program. “(I realized that) if you don’t have self-motivated followers, (it doesn’t matter) if you’re the greatest leader in the world,” she said. “Leadership is a dance. I learned that leadership is not as important as finding good followers.” Going forward, Tracey hopes to use what she has learned to work with organizations that are thinking of going through a merger. “I’d like to do premerger counseling,” she said. “(A merger) is a professional marriage,” said Tracey who plans to marry in early 2020. “I would love to do organizational reconnaissance, and tell (companies) which employees are on board, which need to get on board, and which will never get on board. As human beings, we don’t always see the big picture.” LBC’s doctoral program students can complete the 30-credit program in as little as two years. Courses are delivered in a blended format, offering the flexibility of online education and the benefit of only one three-week residency component. Students complete the program in a cohort community of about a dozen students. Tracey took part in the fifth cohort. Information about the program and application materials are available at www.lbc.edu/capital/ academics. Applications are currently being accepted.

The Friendly Valley Daisy Girl Scouts completed the Leadership Journey “5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals!” on Dec. 7, 2019. The girls gathered at the Girl Scout cabin in Paradise and spent the day learning to take care of both themselves and other animals. They did this through storytelling, role playing, and creative expression. At the end of the event, the Daisies presented what they had learned to a group of parents and adult leaders. This Girl Scout Leadership Journey is part of a series that seeks to help girls learn about themselves and the world through storytelling. The stories are intended to allow girls to experience the variety of the world around them and thereby develop empathy, tolerance, and acceptance of others. Stories are also intended to sharp-

en girls’ minds and spark their imaginations, inspire and motivate, and teach girls how to lead in their own lives and in the world. Throughout this journey, the Daisies hear others’ stories and tell their own stories. As part of Leadership Journey, the Daisies earned a series of three awards. They earned the Birdbath Award by learning to care for animals and for themselves. They used their new knowledge and their creativity to earn the Red Robin Award by teaching others how to care for animals. The third award, the Tula Award, aims to help Daisies gain courage and confidence in teaching others about animal care. Girl Scout troops in the area are recruiting new members, and more information is available by visiting www.gshpa.org or calling 800-692-7816.

The bike has three wheels, hand brakes, and number of special mirrors so Amber can see behind her. She hopes to be able to ride it with Addie by spring. Currently, Amber is looking for a system to turn the bike into a trainer for stationary use indoors and doing modified exercises to help her build the muscles she will need to be able to ride. Amber’s Chiari issues have required her to undergo 15 brain and spinal cord surgeries, some of which were necessary to save her life. The high pressure in her brain caused by excess spinal fluid had to be relieved. “(In 2017), my neurosurgeon stabilized my spine … which decreases a lot of mobility, but it saved my life,” said Amber, who added that she is grateful for the titanium hardware that holds her See Bicycle pg 13

area. In the last year, Amber has improved to the point that when her occupational therapist, Erica Lausch, asked if there was anything she wanted to work toward, she said she wanted to ride a bike with Addie. Finding a bicycle that would work for her, however, was no easy task. “I have balance issues, and I can’t turn my head, so a regular bike would not be an option,” explained Amber, who looked at recumbent bicycles and found their price tag to be a problem as well. “When you’re sick, you spend so much money traveling to appointments and all the things you need,” she explained. Erica was not ready to give up. She contacted her friend Victoria Warfel of Lititz AMBUCS, a civic group that works to create independence and mobility for people with disabilities, and asked if the organization, known for providing adaptive bicycles for children, could help an adult. “They have all types of bikes, but you need a therapist to figure out what type of bike

KDC Plans Relocation KDC: Cooperative Solutions has been offered an opportunity to share office space with one of its founding member nonprofit organizations in its new office space in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania Association Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), just relocated to 1007 N. Front St., Suite 3S, Harrisburg. The space includes one large private office, a shared kitchen and three bathrooms, shared use of a conference room and plenty of parking spaces on the riverfront property. In conversations preceding the move, KDC executive director Peggy Fogarty and PASA execu-

tive director Hannah SmithBrubaker explored multiple ways the KDC and PASA could find efficiencies by working together more intentionally. SmithBrubaker served as KDC’s board president in 2015-16. KDC plans to host its board meetings at the new space and have more in-person time with its members, board members, and other partners. KDC can start moving Saturday, Feb. 1, and plans to be fully out of the Ephrata office by Sunday, March 1. KDC’s mailing address will remain 108F N. Reading Road, Suite 200, Ephrata, for now.

Amber is looking forward to being able to get out on the bike. “It’s giving me another way to exercise,” she said. “With all the hardware, I lost everything but walking.” Before the onset of the Chiari symptoms, Amber liked to do aerobics and interval training. “That would all be too high impact for me now,” she said. “With high pressure, you can’t jump up and down.” Amber is also thankful to Erica, AMBUCS, and others who have gone the extra mile for her. “I am not an inside-the-box patient,” said Amber, “(but) people who have invested in me and walked with me are why I can still be a mom.” Amber’s mother, Pam Jaskierski, added that she is especially grateful for those who have been willing to step into Amber’s life. “(The specialist) who helped her was a godsend because he listened, and he fixed it,” said Pam. “Otherwise we would not be here.” Lititz AMBUCS is a local member of a national charitable service organization. Two Columbia Branches Of Church Organize The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that its two Columbia Branches (Spanish) are now recognized as independent congregations of the Church. Located in York and Lancaster counties, these groups were divided into two independent Spanishspeaking branches and organized with new leaders on Oct. 29, 2019. The Spanish-speaking branches have grown enough to be recognized as independent congregations. Previously, the branches shared one branch

president and two counselors. Now each has a branch president and two counselors. The former Columbia Branch (West) of York County, 2100 Hollywood Drive, was renamed the Queen Street Branch (Spanish). President Ángel Díaz was sustained as branch president, replacing president Matthew Gogna. Diaz’s counselors are first counselor José Jiménez and second counselor Ricardo Ureña. Vladimir Miranda is the branch clerk of finance for all of the York County units. The church’s

boundaries coincide with the Dover Branch and the Shrewsbury, York, and West York Ward boundaries. The second Spanish-speaking congregation, formerly called the Columbia Branch (East) of Lancaster County, is now named the King Street Branch (Spanish), 1210 E. King St., Lancaster. The King Street Branch’s boundaries coincide with the boundaries of the Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lancaster, and Lititz wards. The King Street Branch was organized with president Carlos
