A Larger-Than-Life Production PVHS To Stage “Beauty And The Beast”
ianna Winey, who plays the Wardrobe in the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) production of “Beauty and the Beast,” hopes audiences will be transported to the village in France where the action takes place. “I want it to be an experience to not just watch but feel a part of the story,” said Winey, who explained that in multiple scenes characters in the show will be in and moving through the audience. Jarred Knepp, who plays Maurice hopes the show will reveal the message that each individual is special underneath the façade they may show to the world. “Beauty and the Beast” will be staged at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3; 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 4; and 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at the school, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers. Director Nathan Bankert said that

he chose the show because he wanted to do a musical that would appeal to all age groups in the community. He also lauded cast members as “perfect for their parts.” “Beauty and the Beast” tells the tale of Belle, played by Celeste Huyard, and the Beast, played by Jazae Itegi, who is really a young prince trapped under a spell. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved before time runs out, the curse will be broken, and he will be transformed into his former human self. Based on Disney’s Academy Awardwinning animated feature, the stage version includes original songs such as “Belle,” “Be Our Guest,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” the latter of which will be sung by Julia Shaubach as Mrs. Potts. As rehearsals progress, students are learning to create characters of inanimate objects and preparing to sing and dance in larger-than-life costumes. job of assistant township manager in East Vincent in 2018. Now, Thompson is looking forward to fulfilling his duties as manager of Paradise Township. “I am excited to be here,” said Thompson. “As a professional in this role, I pride myself on being a visionary, planning, and looking ahead,” he said, adding that he would like to see the area go forward with the type of development that upholds the character of Paradise. Thompson reported that he quickly became aware of the values of the people of Paradise Township. “They have a lot of people who care in this community,” he said. “There’s a lot of thoughtfulness and generosity.” Thompson added that he and Groff discussed how private business owners had donated to park projects, and he is impressed. “I was waiting to get a management position where it was the right fit - a place where the values are strong,” Thompson said. “I have found them here, and I am really excited to be part of a values-driven community.”

work as a journalist gave him a global perspective on government. After serving for six years, Thompson left the Army with a degree in English education, going on to teach first on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico, followed by a stint in a private school. Disillusioned by the amount of test-
ing, Thompson decided teaching was not the best fit for him, although he had gained valuable lessons from the experience. “I took away the importance of assessment and having a plan for lessons and operations,” he said. He noted that teaching also cemented his values for investing in people. “You don’t quit on people,” he said, pointing to the importance of believing in one’s students. Reconsidering his love of writing and public affairs, Thompson decided to return to school. He studied at Villanova University to earn a master’s degree in public administration. In 2017, Thompson purchased a house in Phoenixville and was appointed to the Phoenixville Planning Commission. “That was my first real introduction to (township government),” recalled Thompson, who was involved in approving about 3,000 housing units in the time he served. Thompson got to know the planning consultant for Phoenixville, who was also contracted to East Vincent Township. Through that association, he applied for and was awarded the

The Pioneers (14-8) prevailed by a 46-36 score. “We played well during the first half when the game was uptempo,” said Jason McDonald, the Braves’ head coach. “As the tempo slowed down, it favored L-S. “Except for that third quarter, we played well,” continued the coach. “We had 11 turnovers in the third.” The Braves were down by only three points with 6:30 to play. The Pioneers hit a pair of key threepoint baskets. “They made a few plays down the stretch that we didn’t make,” McDonald said. “I was extremely proud of our group - their work ethic and their effort in this game.” Katie Stoltzfus scorched the net with three-point baskets five times to earn her game-high 15 points of the night. She also grabbed three rebounds. Sarah Arment added seven points plus an assist.

The Braves (12-10) will play host to Upper Dauphin. The Trojans (13-9) come in as the sixth seed visiting number three seed Pequea. “We are home and we’re expecting a competitive game,” McDonald said. “Our goal is to make it to states, so we need to win the district opener to complete that goal as well as put ourselves in a position for a district championship. We have put ourselves in a great position.
The Bullets did make districts, heading into the District Three Class 3A playoffs as the sixth seed. But it is not the blessings the group is bestowing that BOH founder David Lapp had on his mind several weeks after the crisis when he discussed the response effort. “It’s been a real blessing to be able to respond in this way,” noted Lapp, who remained in Leola while fellow founder Aaron Fisher traveled to Kentucky, arriving in Campbellsville just about a day after the tornado touched down. “At this time, people want to give.”
PVHS from pg 1 said that it is strange to play a cleaning apparatus, but she is enjoying bringing to life the character’s personality. Both William Johnson as LeFou and Huyard noted that taking part in the over-the-top musical means playing everything large. “With everything you have to put in your full effort,” said Huyard. “When I am angry at Gaston, (played by Jamison Castor), I am really angry.” All the students were familiar with the material, since most had grown up watching the movie. Itegi said that he loves the story, especially the transformations that occur in both Belle and the Beast.
“They both show true character,” he said. Huyard agreed, saying that Belle is inspiring in the way she warms up to the Beast as they become friends and she eventually grows to love him. Other main characters include Cogsworth, played by Nathan Heverin, Lumiere, played by Colton Mann, and Chip, played by Sean Ammon. Tickets for “Beauty and the Beast” may be purchased by calling 717768-5510, ext. 5509, or by emailing Lori_Aleardi@pequeavalley.org. Tickets will be discounted for students and senior citizens.

by the tornado. “They focus more on the cleanup side,” said Lapp, who noted about 250 volunteers were being managed per day with 500 to 800 from the Lancaster area having served at the site. He added that soon after the tornado hit, representatives of Bowling Green contacted Plain Compassion to manage all local volunteers. “They were processing up to 900 local applications a day in Bowling Green alone,” he said. “(People) want to know if they go there to give that their talents will be utilized and not just wasted,” he said. BOH was founded in 2006 when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that would otherwise have been wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. More information about the ministry may be found at http://www.blessingsofhope.com.

“At this point, Blessings of Hope is responsible for all incoming donations into the distribution center at Mayfield,” Lapp noted, adding that he estimated about 100 truckloads of product were on the ground there in midJanuary. “Initially we were sending product from here, but two weeks into this, we saw there was product coming from all over America that needed to be managed,” he explained. “We shifted our focus to managing what was coming in and managing the distribution in Mayfield and the surrounding area.” Lapp described churches that were stuffing buses with anything they could send, including clothing and toys in addition to food items. He noted that two BOH trucks distribute items from the center to the surrounding communities. Lapp serves on the board of Plain Compassion Crisis Response, which is based in Intercourse. He said a steady stream of volunteers has been pouring into the area ravaged

Lapp said that the devastation left by the 190 mph winds as the tornado cut a 165-mile path through Kentucky met the criteria the organization has set for sending supplies. The first trucks, which arrived in Kentucky at 4 a.m. on Dec. 12, carried water and ready-to-eat foods to bring immediate relief to those affected. According to Lapp, about 80 houses were destroyed in the rural Campbellsville region. Currently, BOH plans to have people on the ground in the area through the end of April.
