According to Tim Rogers, lead pastor of Grace Point Church in Paradise, the idea of meeting on a front porch should evoke thoughts of easy conversation. “When we think of a front porch, we think of people talking casually and enjoying company together, said Rogers. “You’re meeting each other, beginning conversation, and having some fun. That’s what people do on the front porch. They talk, engage, and learn about each other. That atmosphere is what Grace Point strives to create with Front Porch, an effort aimed at providing a relational and relaxed environment for area residents to discuss matters of faith. Front Porch will meet on Wednesdays through May 20 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Light refreshments will be served. See Front Porch pg 2

New Ministry Provides Computers For Refugees By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Last year, Lancaster EMS transported more than 1,000 infants, toddlers, and school-age children in its fleet of ambulances and other vehicles. While the emergency medical service’s staff members are all credentialed to provide medical care to children, only some of the vehicles had the necessary equipment to safely transport newborns. According to Rick Pearson, Lancaster EMS director of education, a team spent 500 hours researching safety equipment for pediatric transport. In 2016, a new protocol was introduced in See Lancaster EMS pg 9 The

During the gathering, which is led by Rogers or Greg Petersheim, executive pastor of discipleship at Grace Point, discussion centers around the topic of the previous Sunday’s sermon reformatted for a conversational environment. “On Wednesday night, we have that same content, but it isn’t preached,” explained Rogers. Instead, the topic will be boiled down to a few questions that are designed to spur discussion, which allows for group dynamics, which lead to laughs. Rogers noted that the conversation often leads to members of the group discussing shared experiences. “It’s people just talking and quickly getting into (related topics),” he shared, adding that many participants

will discuss their own faith stories and past histories and where they stand now with faith. As an example, Rogers recalled a Front Porch meeting where he discussed Jesus as the Light of the World. “I opened Front Porch by saying, ‘Go around and share your name and tell me one time when you were afraid of the dark or you scared someone in the dark,’” said Rogers, who added that the question generated some amusing stories. Following the opening question, Rogers asked group members to talk about a time when they were in the dark and had to make a decision or in a season of life when they were not sure what the future held or had lost a relationship or lost direction or were disillusioned or discouraged. “I (brought) in where John introduced Jesus as the Light of the World and asked, ‘What does that mean?’” continued Rogers, who said that the discussion progressed to what that means in daily life and in practical ways for dealing with discouragement, depression, hurt, or shame. In offering a comfortable environment in which to discuss matters of faith, Grace Point is reaching beyond church walls. “We know there are people in our community who have questions about faith and spiritual matters (but) who don’t have a place or aren’t sure where to go to have those questions addressed,” said Rogers. “There are so many good churches in our area, but speaking for Grace Point, it’s not enough to open our doors and say, ‘You’re welcome to come in.’ We need to go and engage in conversation with people where they live and engage with the world.” Petersheim agreed, noting that part of Grace Point’s vision is to be “a transforming presence in the town square.” “That’s what drives us,” he said. Readers who have questions about Front Porch may visit www.gracepointparadise.com/ ministries/grace-point-front-porch or call the church at 717-687-7971.

The quilt will travel throughout North America, bringing awareness and raising funds for MCC’s ministries. Quilt viewers are invited to vote for their favorite quilt by donating money during the preview. Each cent will count as one vote and go toward the Pennsylvania Relief Sale’s My Coins Count collection. This year’s collection supports MCC’s education initiatives. MCC

Joni and Friends Pennsylvania will hold its annual Evening of Hope event on Thursday, April 16, from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The organization will be celebrating

program director Kathy Rose. The keynote speaker embodies that mission. Canadian Shelley Moore is the author of “One Without the Other: Stories of Unity Through Diversity and Inclusion,” which is volume 1 in “Reimagining Inclusion: The ONE Series,” and the owner of “Five Moore Minutes,” a continuing education resource for teachers in which she shares strategies for creating and sustaining inclusive classrooms. Moore’s keynote address is titled “Teaching to Diversity: The Evolution of Inclusion.” “With 21st-century learning, our definition of what is success needs to include more people. We can no longer be striving towards a model where the goal of education is to replicate and duplicate ‘sameness’ in individuals,” Moore said in an interview about her research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) posted at www.grad.ubc.ca/campus-community/meet-our-students/moore-shelley. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from

its 20th anniversary of ministry in Pennsylvania. For more information about Joni and Friends Pennsylvania, readers may call 717-522-1467 or visit www.joniandfriends.org /pennsylvania.

Shelley Moore the University of Alberta and a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University. She holds a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council doctoral fellowship at UBC, where she is exploring inclusive education for students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities in secondary schools. “ We need to better understand whether and how meaningful learning of curricula becomes more accessible to all students when students with intellectual and developmental disabilities are included,” Moore explained. “To that end, my research will contribute by investigating how content area and special education teachers can collaborate to create rich learning opportunities for and with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their peers in inclusive classrooms.” In addition to her keynote address, Moore will lead a breakout session on supporting learners from a strengths-based perspective. Other breakout session topics will include brain development, autism and executive function difficulties, depression and anxiety, trauma awareness and strategies for supporting students with histories of trauma, classroom safety, special education and student services law, bullying, yoga and mindfulness for preschoolers, developing career readiness through esports, and more. Conference attendance is open to anyone with an interest in education, particularly teachers, school district and agency personnel, parents, and college students. IU13 early childhood and special education services program support liaison Linda Swisher noted that because the number of substitute teachers attending the conference has dramatically increased, a session on substitute-specific classroom management has been added to the program. A tiered pricing system has been set for admission to the conference. Parents, substitutes, and university students will receive a special rate. An early bird discount is available for school district and agency personnel who register prior to Friday, May 1. Breakfast and lunch are included in the cost. Six Act 48 hours will be awarded for attending the keynote speech and two breakout sessions. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.iu13.org or call Swisher at 717-606-1878.

Bird Club Sets Field Trips

Pennsylvania that specified that in the event of a field birth where a child was born outside of a hospital or other medical facility - the mother and baby cannot be transported together. Instead, each person is supposed to have their own ambulance and dedicated team of paramedics or emergency medical technicians. When an adult is transported in an ambulance, seatbelt-like straps are used to secure the person to the gurney. Straps cross the legs and torso and come over the head, preventing side-to-side and back-and-forth movements. For children, however, the devices used by Lancaster EMS had been rated to a minimum of 10 pounds, which is too big for most newborns. That prompted the search, with the resulting acquisition of ambulance child restraint (ACR) kits. The bags each contain four harnesses that can accommodate children ranging in weight from 4 to 11 pounds up to 100 pounds. The child is strapped into the flexible harness, which is secured to the gurney frame. The devices are made of breathable fabric to allow maximum airflow and to meet infection control standards. They are machinewashable for easy cleanup. The straps are padded to keep children comfortable and to reduce the risk of pressure sores from long-distance transportation. The ACR kits are not cheap, but Lancaster EMS leaders want its 23 fleet vehicles to each have

a kit. At the very least, the goal is to outfit the 15 ambulances that are in service during the course of a day with ACRs. Lancaster EMS started off with five kits, but thanks to a $4,771.97 grant from Highmark Blue Shield, the organization was able to purchase seven additional kits. Now, all advanced life support vehicles - also known as mobile intensive care units - as well as a basic life support vehicle and a supervisor vehicle have ACR kits. The ambulances each have a sticker declaring them as “prepared for pediatrics.” Lancaster EMS meets all of the standards of the master level that were established as part of a voluntary pediatric recognition program supported by the Pennsylvania

Department of Health, the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council, and the Emergency Medical Services for Children organization. Master level ranks just below the maximum available and indicates that Lancaster EMS conducts regular pediatric community education and provides pediatric-specific training for staff members. All staff members must have clear background checks as well. To reach the top level, Lancaster EMS must submit paperwork indicating that it has a person certified to perform car seat safety checks on staff. “We’re not complacent,” director of operation Jerry Schramm remarked. Additionally, Lancaster EMS is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services, which promotes national standards of excellence. Just 186

ambulance services out of the country’s 21,000 agencies are nationally accredited, and Lancaster EMS is one of only five in Pennsylvania. Accreditation may be renewed or revoked following an evaluation every three years. Grants to purchase additional ACR kits are pending, said marketing and development coordinator Marisa Seubert, but donations are always welcome. Gingrich’s dream for Computers for Refugees would be to have church youth groups or other organizations with computersavvy members volunteer to train recipients in using their computers. “Welcoming refugees is an opportunity to build relationships,” he said. “They’re excited about the opportunities to learn, study, and get ahead.” Computers for Refugees wel-

donated 60 desktops, so Gingrich reached out to RiversEdge Ministry Center to store the computers. Metzler taught Gingrich how to upgrade the systems, and, along with other volunteers, the two men began the process of preparing the computers for their new owners. Additional computers and peripherals have been donated since then. In 2019, Computers for Refugees gave away 96 desktops, 130 laptops, five tablets, and 11 printers. In January this year, 16 desktops, four laptops, and two printers found new homes. Several of the items went to Bethel AME Church, which is opening an after-school tutoring program. The Lenovo desktop computers, mice, and keyboards were donated by the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster, and the Lenovo monitors were passed on by a pharmaceutical company. “It was so special to give (Bethel AME) complete systems,” Gingrich remarked. Gingrich created a simple application for people who desire to receive a computer. Recipients have included Nepali and Somali refugees, as well as Cuban doctors whose credentials did not transfer to the United States, so they have been working in warehouses. “Some families have been here quite a while, but they

grammar lessons in his tutoring sessions, and he thought it would be helpful for his students to practice on their own at home. However, with most of his students being refugees with limited incomes, buying computers was not an option for them. In 2017, Gingrich’s acquaintance Stu Metzler, who is comfortable refurbishing computers, picked up 10 computers from a Philadelphia law firm that had upgraded their devices. Metzler upgraded the computers to Windows 10, and Gingrich matched them with his students. “And that’s how we got started,” Gingrich said. The new ministry of AOCC is called Computers for Refugees. Initially, the program benefited just individuals who received ESL tutoring services at AOCC. Then, Church World Service’s Lancaster division began referring clients. Computers for Refugees has also assisted individuals recommended by Intermediate Unit 13’s Refugee Center, Millersville University’s Migrant Education Program, the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, and the International Healthcare Professionals Program in Lancaster. Gingrich also provided information about the initiative to a consortium of ESL programs in Lancaster County. In the summer of 2018, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS)

The Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series, named for a longtime Highland Presbyterian Church music director, is held at Highland, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. The series presents four concerts each year. According to current Highland music ministry director Paul Thorlakson, the series kicks off each fall with an organ concert. A second concert is held near Christmas, a third concert is held in the spring, and the choir and an orchestra perform a major work in June. This year, Thorlakson will be joined by friends, including clarinetist Doris Hall-Gulati and vocalists Jeffrey and Abbigail Martin, for “Paul and Friends,” an eclectic concert on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. The concert, which will include a variety of types of music, will run for 90 minutes with a brief intermission. There is no cost to attend the concert. A freewill offering will be received. Thorlakson, who has been directing at Highland for a few years, was asked by concert organizers if he would put together a concert. “I said, ‘Yes, but I would like to bring some friends along with me,’” he said, noting that he and Hall-Gulati have been friends for quite some time. “Abbigail and Jeffrey are new friends (of mine) because they just came to Lancaster a few weeks ago,” said Thorlakson, who introduced Jeffrey as a new professor at Lancaster Bible College. Jeffrey and Abbigail met at Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute when they were assigned the same opera to study. “… And the rest is history,” said Jeffrey. “Music brought us together.” The group is looking forward to playing together at Highland. “Highland’s acoustics are wonderful,” said Hall-Gulati. Thorlakson echoed her comments, saying that it will be a good venue for the concert, which he called a “potpourri (of music) heavier on the romantic side.” As a pianist, he noted that he will play solos, instrumental duets, accompaniment, and more on the new Steinway D concert grand piano that was recently purchased by Highland following a worship and mission enhancement campaign that raised $400,000. “This will be the first Dorothy Rose Smith Concert that features that piano,” said Thorlakson. In addition to Thorlakson’s piano solos, Hall-Gulati noted that saxophone music and opera will be part of the mix. “(The concert) will be stylistically diverse,” said Thorlakson. “There will be some musical theater and art song.” The musicians said to expect up to eight numbers including piano and clarinet duets, piano and voice, and piano and voice and clarinet. Thorlakson credited Dorothy Rose Smith with building the musical program at Highland.

The second half saw the home team maintain momentum and simply play better all-around basketball. “We talked about a few things at halftime and we challenged them,” McDonald explained. “Anytime we challenge them, they always step up. They went out there and played hard. “They decided they were going to get those 50/50 loose balls; they were going to get the rebounds and just hustle” he continued. “That’s the way we play.” “It was very important because we had our ups and downs,” said Bethany Bills, Pequea’s leading scorer at 16 points, when asked about the significance of coming out and taking the lead early in the second half. “We played well together as a team tonight. Our defense definitely held. We’ve been working hard on defense and that definitely helped us.” “From the first day until now, we have practiced hard so it’s expected that we’re going to play hard when we come out here,” said McDonald. Such was the case in Wednesday night’s game at Pequea Valley High School where the Braves played host to Susquenita in the District Three Class-AAA third-place consolation game. The Pequea girls fell behind 75 with 2:55 to play in the first quarter and trailed by as much as 10 points when Black Hawks freshman Elizabeth Jones made it 19-9 in the visitors’ favor at the 6:27 mark of the second quarter.

“I felt it just took us a while to get into rhythm,” said Jason McDonald, the Pequea Valley head coach. “Once we got into our rhythm, we were fine. “We missed a couple of easy ones - maybe it was a little bit of nerves,” continued the coach. “It just seemed like we loosened up and started to play like we can. We were fine.” The Braves narrowed the deficit to 29-28 at the half and outscored the Black Hawks 24-7 in the fourth quarter to earn third place in the district with a 64-50 victory. The win not

The Braves 30th game of the season will be in the state playoffs - the first squad in the program’s history to qualify for states. “I’ve enjoyed coaching them,” said McDonald. “I love these kids. So, another day, another week with them is amazing. We’re just enjoying this. It’s so much fun. “These girls have put their time in,” added the coach. “You put in the hard work and this is what you get.”

The fourth quarter was all Pequea. Bills had a handful of baskets including a coast-to-coast layup following a defensive rebound. That basket made it 53-46 with 2:10 to play. “I was hustling as hard as I could,” she said. Down the stretch the Braves took advantage of clock-stopping fouls by the Hawks. Leslie made all four of her foul shots and Clara Neff went 2-for-2 at the line as well to seal the deal. Susquenita’s Alana Boyer led all scorers with 20 points. Neff and Rebecca Cox finished with eight points each for PV. Horst scored six. The Braves were coming off a loss in the district semifinals on Friday, February 21 at Trinity. The Shamrocks, who entered district play as the second seed, improved to 19-5 with the 58-43 win. They got out to a commanding lead in the first half. The Braves found themselves in a 30-12 halftime hole. Though they played a tighter third quarter and actually outscored the Shamrocks in the final period, it wasn’t enough. This year, Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana, received a Pilcrow Grant. Funds raised by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library through events such as the annual Winter Tea and Princess Ball enabled the Friends to donate monies to the library for this purpose. The Pilcrow Foundation was founded in 2013 to continue the work of The Libri Foundation. It aims to provide new, quality, hardcover children’s books to rural public libraries across the United States. The Pilcrow Foundation supports rural public library communities through its Children’s Book Project. Libraries, in partnership with the Friends of the Library or other local sponsors, raise onethird of the funds needed to purchase new books to build community investment in children’s literacy and the library’s future. The new books provided through the Children’s Book Project become part of the library’s permanent children’s book collection. Moores librarians recently

Friends of the Moores Memorial Library show off some of the books received via a Pilcrow Grant from the Pilcrow Foundation. added 100 new titles to the children’s collection as a result of the library’s Pilcrow Grant. New events include Building With BracKitz at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, and Crypto Club at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28.
