GOTR Celebrates A Decade Of Impact Spring 5K Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash

In the 10 years since the Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster-Lebanon council was founded, the organization

has racked up some significant statistics. “We’ve had 12,800 girls cross the finish line,” said executive director Carrie Johnson, referring to both completing the program’s culminating 5K and finishing the GOTR 20-lesson curriculum designed to promote good choices for a

lifetime of self-respect and healthy l i v ing. In addition, those teams completed 972 community impact projects. Currently, there is a team in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon, and more than 90 teams will take part in the current session.

But for Johnson, the impact goes beyond mere numbers. As the local organization celebrates its milestone anniversary, the staff is focused on a growth mindset that is about forging stronger bonds, not only with the girls who take part in the program, but also See Girls On The Run pg 3

Dayspring To Host Noted Speakers Martial Arts Demonstration Planned By Ann Mead Ash

Remember America Series To Continue By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The leaders of Dayspring Christian Academy have tapped two individuals to give addresses during the ninth annual Remember America Speaker Series event, which is themed “Which Way, America? Choose You This Day” and will be held on Saturday, April 27. Fox News personality Shannon Bream and retiring U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy will visit Lancaster and speak to the audience at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster.

Dayspring Christian Academy student Joey Engle (left) will deliver an oration and headmaster Mike Myers (right) will welcome guests at the ninth annual Remember America Speaker Series event, which will be held in Lancaster on April 27. Headlining the event will be speakers Shannon Bream from Fox News and retiring See Speaker Series pg 2 U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy.

Kirk Wolfe, pastor at Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church, teaches karate for several reasons, but one stands out. “The children are my favorite (students) because they think they can’t break a board,” said Wolfe. “They just need to be trained … and when they break a board, you should see their faces … and their confidence goes sky high. That is really fun to watch.” Wolfe and his assistant, Japanese exchange student Natsuki Tsuruyama, will present martial arts techniques at a free demonstration to be held at See Martial Arts pg 8

part of the program. The choir will sing several selections, and during one song, the vocal group will be joined by alumna and soloist Julie Stone. Additionally, junior Joey Engle will deliver an oration, which he composed last year for a school competition. “My oration is (on the topic that) capitalism is the best economic system; it rewards individualism,” Joey said. “I’m pretty nervous (about speaking to a large group of people). Why wouldn’t I be? This is God’s plan, (however). I’m delivering God’s message.” The doors to the venue will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will start at 6 p.m. Two sets of tickets are available for purchase. One set includes dinner, and the other does not. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.dayspring christian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000. Myers noted that there will be an opportunity for attendees to invest in the future of Dayspring at the event, but the Remember America Speaker Series is not primarily a fundraiser. “It’s an extension of our mission,” Myers explained. “It’s an opportunity for us to speak into the community about the importance of the biblical foundation of our nation.”

Funds raised by the event support scholarships for girls who need financial assistance to participate in the GOTR program. More than 6,000 girls have received this assistance from the Lancaster-Lebanon program. The atmosphere prior to a GOTR 5K is always unique because it includes pre-race primping for the girls, but this year, Johnson said that runners will see evidence of the 10-year celebration on T-shirts and through activities. The organization will also hold an Evening of Gratitude event on Friday, March 22, to celebrate those individuals who have contributed to the program’s success. “We just want to say thank you for making this possible,” said Johnson. Community members who wish to take part in the run may register at www.gotrlancaster.org. T-shirts will be available to those who register by Tuesday, April 23. Online registration will close on Thursday, May 16. On-site registration will be available on Friday, May 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Franklin & Marshall College and on the day of the event from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

The Retired Clergy and Church Workers Association at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will sponsor an event on Thursday, March 14, with Dr. Ron Gibson. Gibson, a professor at Lancaster Bible College and former pastor at Christian Fellowship Church in New Holland, will speak on “Ministry in the Retirement Years.” The event will begin with refreshments at 9:30 a.m. The presentation will follow, and the event will conclude with lunch. The event will be held at the GSV chapel and is free of charge. All retired clergy and church workers are invited to attend. Readers should preregister by calling 717-3556000 or 717-355-6134.

The curriculum and training session culminates in the GOTR spring 5K, when the participants complete a local course with a buddy. This year’s run will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Sponaugle-Williamson Field, Franklin & Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. “We encourage the community to join us,” said Johnson of the run, which is open to the public and offers a fairly flat course in Lancaster city. The run will start on College Avenue and turn left on West James Street and then right on North Water Street. Runners will then turn right on West Lemon Street, which becomes Buchanan Avenue. Participants will proceed right onto State Street and go right again on West James Street. The course will turn left on Race Avenue before taking a left on West Clay Street. Runners will then turn left on State Street and left again on West Frederick Street before returning to the Franklin & Marshall campus and ending on the school track.

with their families, coaches, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and anyone involved with GOTR. “We want to deepen those relationships so that (all participants) are asking, ‘How can I be more involved? How can I be part of this mission?’” explained Johnson. GOTR of Lancaster-Lebanon has already reaped fruit from employing this mindset. In early 2019, the council was informed that the group had been chosen from more than 200 other GOTR locations as the recipient of the GOTR PaceSetters Award. The award was given in the GameChanging Relationships category based on a number of examples of ways GOTR of Lancaster-Lebanon has built partnerships with community members and organizations. Among these are a two-year program involving nine Elizabethtown College students who have completed a service project with the program, and the production of the GOTR documentary “Run With Your Heart,” which was created in 2018. The program also worked with a local author on a book that is used to supplement the organization’s curriculum and has partnered with Penn

The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) is holding its 45th annual tree seedling sale. Orders for conifers, hardwoods, wildlife food sources, groundcover, and pollinator-friendly perennials will be accepted through Monday, March 11. The preordered and prepaid plants will be ready for pickup on Thursday, April 11, in the auditorium at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. “That’s the weekend before Easter,” remarked education coordinator Sallie Gregory. “Hopefully folks will consider purchasing (plants) to celebrate Easter and Earth Day, which is on April 22.”

35

Gregory explained that conservation districts were created in response to the Dust Bowl, in which windstorms caused massive soil erosion in the Midwest in the early 1930s. Men and boys employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted trees around the nation, including Pennsylvania, to reduce erosion, especially along streambanks. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970, and the LCCD launched its first tree seedling sale in 1974 to celebrate Earth Day and honor the CCC. “It combined the effort to make trees available to everybody and conserve soil and waterways,” Gregory shared. The tree sale has continued for nearly a half-century. It is the only

fundraising event for the LCCD, which, as an annex to county government, receives some public funding as well as grants and private contributions. The funds are used to provide education and watershed programs, which are held in classrooms or on individual waterways where volunteers are working on stream cleanups, Gregory said. The education programs are available for teachers in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college classes, and all lessons meet state standards for environment and ecology. LCCD also works with classes to perform stream studies, which assess the health of a waterway by cataloging and counting plant, insect, and fish life. There is a second, equally important reason for the seedling sale. “We’re making trees and other plants accessible for county residents to put in the soil to keep it in place so it doesn’t erode due to wind or rain,” Gregory said. Many of the plants also serve dual purposes, whether it is providing food for people or wildlife or acting as windbreaks or Christmas trees. The sale organizers make sure they are offering as many native species as possible, and they work with area nurseries to get appropriate stock for the sale. New offerings this year include

coralberry, which holds its bright berries through the start of winter, and three self-pollinating fruit trees: Montmorency sour cherry, Klondike white peach, and coral star peach. The majority of trees on the sale list are bare root stock that will be dipped in a root preservative gel so that buyers will not have to plant their purchases immediately. As the trees are seedlings, the sale is also offering tubes with stakes designed to protect young plants from stressors and potential damage from deer, moles, voles, and other creatures that would eat their roots or stems. To see a pictorial description list of all species and access an order form, readers may visit www.lancasterconservation.org. For more information or to request that an order form be mailed to them, folks may call the LCCD at 717-299-5361, ext. 5. Payment is due when orders are placed and must be sent to the LCCD. The office is located at the Farm and Home Center and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Pictured on front: The 45th annual sale, which benefits the Lancaster County Conservation District, is being held now, with orders due March 11. Pickup will be April 11 at the Farm and Home Center.

Banquet Set To Support Cold Water Conservation Group The puns are practically unavoidable: Donegal Trout Unlimited (DTU) is fishing for support; DTU hopes to lure supporters to its annual banquet and auction; DTU members are hooked on cold water conservation. Puns or no puns, the work the group is doing is necessary to the health of Lancaster County’s streams and waterways, as well as larger bodies of water like the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. “We’ve spent approximately $3.5 million in about seven years on stream restoration projects,” said Bob Kutz, co-chair of DTU’s conservation committee, board member, and fundraising committee member. “Through these projects, we’ve greatly reduced the sediment going into the Conowingo Pond.” DTU is one of 53 chapters of Trout Unlimited in the state. The chapter was started in 1967 with about a dozen members and was named for its original meeting location. Now, more than 750 people are members of DTU, and the organization holds board meetings at the Millport Conservancy in Lititz and general meetings at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster. The group first worked on restoring Donegal Springs and Donegal Creek, and its work has spread throughout the county. The restoration completed on Lititz Run has become nationally known, said fundraising committee member Vicki Wilson. Currently, DTU has projects in process on Fishing Creek in southern Lancaster County. As a result of the group’s efforts, streambanks are holding their shape, water temperatures are dropping, and aquatic life is thriving. “A buffer of 100 feet filters out all pollutants,” Kutz explained,

adding that hardwood trees planted in riparian buffers even a few dozen feet wide make an impact on streambank stability. DTU maintains a nursery at the Millport Conservancy for use in future projects. “We will have thousands of trees to plant (in buffers) in the next three or four years,” Kutz said. “Even after all the flooding we had this year, the (creek banks) where we planted are still there. The others are blown out,” fundraising committee chair Ruth Roulston reported. The group is thankful to have received grants to cover the costs of its work. However, there are expenses involved in operating the chapter. Fundraising committee co-chair Barry Witmer noted that when new members join, a portion of their membership dues stays local, while the remainder goes to the national organization. Thereafter, the entirety of a member’s dues is paid directly to Trout Unlimited. Exclusive of conservation projects, DTU’s yearly operating budget averages to $33,000. The budget includes facility rental fees, speakers’ fees, sponsorships for youths to attend conservation camps, training and supplies for the Trout in the Classroom program, tree nursery stock and planting supplies,

printed materials, and costs associated with fundraising. The annual banquet and auction is DTU’s largest fundraiser. This year’s affair will be held on Saturday, March 16, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and the plated dinner will include a chicken entrée, salad, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert. Live and silent auctions will be held throughout the evening. Trips to Montana, Spring Creek, and the Potomac River, as well as tuna fishing and skiing, will be up for bids along with golf passes, themed baskets, dinners at two private homes, fishing gear, jewelry, artwork, perfume, and items for infants and children. Witmer will offer an apple pie for sale as well. Additionally, a collectible fly tied by Tom Herr in memory of soldiers killed in Afghanistan has been donated for the auction; the work is so intricate that it took 17 hours to complete. A cost has been set to attend the banquet, and tickets must be reserved by Tuesday, March 5, by contacting Witmer at b.witmer@donegaltu.org or 717-380-0281. For more information about DTU, readers may visit www.donegaltu.org.

Virtual Bike Event Planned Lancaster Farmland Trust’s (LFT) Pedal to Preserve (P2P) bike ride will change form in 2019. For more than 20 years, cyclists have enjoyed scenic rides of 6, 20 or 50 miles over Lancaster County’s rural roadways as part of LFT’s charity bike ride. This year, though, LFT will hold a virtual event that encourages riders to set out on their own favorite loop around the county. Along the way, LFT is asking riders to snap pictures of the classic Lancaster County scenery and share them on social media. Details for the virtual event are still being finalized. Readers may visit www.lancaster farmlandtrust.org in early April for more information and to register to participate.

Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church, 5971 Division Highway, Narvon, on Saturday, March 9, beginning at 4 p.m. The event will include 40 minutes of demonstration, followed by a 20minute question-and-answer period. Area residents of all ages are welcome. “We will be demonstrating all the things the students will be able to learn to do as they progress through their belt ranks,” explained Wolfe, who added that Okinawan karate, which includes the weapons; Korean taekwondo; kendo, which involves a sword; jiujitsu; and judo will all be demonstrated. Tsuruyama will demonstrate kendo and jiuitsu, and Wolfe and some of his students will break boards. “Breaking teaches focus to be able to hit a specific spot, and it shows power,” said Wolfe. Wolfe added that the weapons that will be demonstrated will include the bo staff and the sai, which is like a large fork. “Most people are familiar with these weapons (because) the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ (characters) use them,” Wolfe said. In addition, Wolfe will demonstrate open-hand forms. “These are a series of movements like a dance, (and) you can use the dance to defend yourself,” he said, noting that engaging in combat is not necessary for those who learn the discipline. “A lot of people look at the sport and think, ‘I will have to fight,’ but in Okinawa, they teach forms that are like a dance in elementary schools as part of their heritage. There’s a rhythm, but (each series includes) other kinds of (karate) movements, instead of just dance movements.” Wolfe, who is originally from Lititz, honed his skills in karate when he was stationed

in Okinawa in the Air Force from 1990 to 1993. “We were homeschooling and looking for a gym for (our daughters),” explained Wolfe, who found Master Chotoku Makabe at the United Services Organization (USO). “I studied with him and enjoyed it, and I went to second-degree black belt in Okinawa,” said Wolfe, who has taught in the U.S. and taken part in demonstrations in Australia and Mexico. “I go back to Okinawa and continue testing, and I take students there to experience what it is like to be there at the roots of the (sport).” Wolfe’s other credits include serving as martial arts director for a Manheim sports complex and winning gold, silver, and bronze medals in the Oklahoma State Games and Pennsylvania’s Keystone Games. He was also a silver medalist at the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU) national event, where he represented Oklahoma. As a teacher at the U.S. Air Force Security Police Academy, he taught physical apprehension and restraint techniques, and he currently serves as a police officer with the Quarryville police department and as a negotiator for the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. He teaches martial arts lessons with the Police Athletic League in Lancaster city, and he was an adjunct taekwondo instructor for Rose State College on Oklahoma City. Following the demonstration, Wolfe plans to hold year-round weekly free classes at the church on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m., beginning on March 17. Classes will be divided based on interest. Interested individuals may sign up following the demonstration or register by calling the church at 717-354-8459.

Curb appeal is beneficial in various ways. It can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers and give existing homeowners a place they want to come home to. In its study of the worth of outdoor remodeling projects, the National Association of Realtors found that standard lawn care and overall landscape upgrades were most appealing to buyers, as well as the most likely to add value to a home.

Although plants, grass, and other items can improve curb appeal, homeowners should not overlook hardscaping. Hardscaping is an industry term that refers to the nonliving features of a landscape. These features can include everything from decks to walkways to ornamental boulders. Introducing paths or paver walls to a property helps develop that home’s hardscape. Hardscape and soft elements often work in concert to create

inspiring landscape designs. DIY landscape designers can heed certain tips to add to the hardscape features on their properties or enhance the ones already in existence. C h o o s e m a t e r i a l s . As with many landscaping projects, homeowners must first determine what types of additions they would like on their properties. Common hardscape features include patios, decks, and walkways made of pavers or bricks, as well as retaining walls. Hardscape elements can be functional or simply decorative features that add whimsy to the yard. Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an Eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the

overall appeal. Professionals suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work cannot be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project will be cohesive. Think about the purpose. Hardscaping can look good but also serve key purposes. Pebbles or gravel can mitigate trouble areas that do not grow grass or plant life well. Retaining walls hold back soil in yards that have sharply inclined hills. Mulch can set perimeters around trees and shrubs, as well as planting beds. Fencing, another form of hardscaping, is essential for establishing property boundaries and adding privacy. Consult a professional. While many hardscaping additions can be handled by novices, large-scale projects, such as patios and decking, can change the grading of the yard. Professionals can map out how to handle drainage issues and meet building codes. In addition, professional installation can ensure that hardscaping features last for years to come.

Kitchen Remodel Must-Haves duce for meals. ¡ Kitchen island and bar stools: Even though many meals are enjoyed around the table, there is something to be said for the convenience of a kitchen island and some well-placed bar stools for quick breakfasts or snacks. ¡ Smart kitchen storage: Work with a contractor to have storage solutions built into cabinetry and the pantry. Slide-out shelving, nooks for paper towel rolls, and

custom-designed areas to store stand mixers and other necessities can make kitchens more functional. ¡ Outdoor access: If possible, design a kitchen so it is easy to access the backyard via sliding doors. This can make outdoor entertaining or even coffee on the deck much easier. ¡ Under-cabinet lighting: Fixtures installed under cabinets provide both ambient lighting and task lighting. This type of lighting makes it easier for people to see what they are working on, as even well-placed overhead lighting can

fail to illuminate dark corners and spots on the counters. ¡ Convenient warming drawer: This appliance, which provides backup to the oven, is a slide-out drawer that can keep prepared foods out of the way and warm until they are served. It is particularly handy for holidays and other times when homeowners entertain. ¡ Beverage station: Designate one area of the kitchen for beverages, such as coffee and tea. This can limit traffic in the kitchen to a single area when homeowners host gatherings.

Kitchen remodels are among the most popular home renovation projects, whether they consist of swapping out cabinet hardware or doing major demolition. When investing in a kitchen project, homeowners should consider incorporating the following items: ¡ Deep, double sinks: Having a double sink enables people to soak dishes in one side and then wash on the other. The thought of a sizable return on investment can make relaxing in a freestanding tub that much more enjoyable. · Warmth: Even freestanding tubs made of materials other than cast iron offer notable heat retention. Stone resin bathtubs, for example, provide excellent insulation on cold nights. That is ideal for people who want to unwind in the tub without having to exit early because the water has become cold.

homeowners should make sure to ask contractors to investigate piping and plumbing so no surprises pop up after the tub has been purchased and work has begun. If estimates from contractors indicate that such an installation project is a possibility, homeowners can consider these benefits of freestanding tubs before making their final decisions. · Cleaning: Because they are detached from other bathroom fixtures and not flush against the wall, freestanding tubs tend to be easier to clean than built-in bathtubs. Many freestanding tubs are accessible from all sides, making it easier to reach all those nooks and crannies where grime can build up. · Return on investment: In its 2018 “Cost vs. Value” report, Remodeling magazine noted that upscale bathroom remodels recouped 56.2 percent of their cost at resale. for those who want to spend more than a little time relaxing in a freestanding tub. However, because cast iron is so heavy, installing a cast-iron tub may require structural reinforcement of the flooring, which will add to the overall cost of the project. According to HomeAdvisor, the average cost to install a tub varies widely depending on the type of tub, the materials it is made of, and other factors, including plumbing and piping. For example, the cost to install a freestanding tub will rise considerably if new plumbing and piping are necessary. Before purchasing a freestanding tub, homeowners should seek estimates regarding installation, making sure to get them in writing. Contractors will determine if structural reinforcement is necessary and include such costs in their estimates. In addition,

One home design element that tends to have an instant wow factor is a freestanding tub. Freestanding tubs have an air of luxury that can help current homeowners relax and impress buyers when homes go on the market. Freestanding tubs are typically made of cast iron or porcelain. Better Mattress, Better Sleep mattress and its condition. A good matDrift Off To Dreamland With The Perfect Mattress tress should alleviate pressure on joints

while providing bodily support. It should not be a contributor to aches and pains. Mattresses that are seven years old or older may need to be replaced. People considering purchasing a new mattress have many options from which to choose, and the task of selecting a mattress may seem overwhelming. But even though there are many options, it is key for people to discover which material is right for them.

People make many renovations around their homes to improve their quality of life. Bedrooms are no exception, and making some changes there can greatly affect quality of sleep and improve the health and well-being of residents. The temperature of a bedroom, its configuration, and its lighting can impact a person’s ability to get a good night’s sleep; however, the item that may bear the most influence is the mattress. Innerspring The Better Sleep Council notes that Innerspring (also called coil) mattresses whether one wakes up feeling rested and healthy depends largely on the age of a have been around for some time. The metal springs provide internal support. The number of coils, types of coils, and distribution pattern throughout the mattress impact how well the bed will conform to the body. These mattresses may be best for back or stomach sleepers due to their level of support. People should keep in mind that innerspring mattresses may have limited durability and may start to sag after a few years.

Memory Foam Memory foam mattresses are relatively recent additions to the market. According to the mattress shopping resource The Sleep Judge, memory foam mattresses may eventually replace innerspring mattresses. Famous for its ability to contour to the shape of the user’s body, memory foam envelops a person and absorbs energy. This means that there is less motion transfer, which can be a big plus when a partner moves around. Memory foam provides a high level of pressure point relief and promotes proper spine alignment. Gel Foam Gel foam mattresses bounce back to their original form when pressure is released. Hollow columns in the mattress allow for increased air flow that improves this pressure release and enables people to sleep coolly and comfortably. Sometimes gel is paired with memory foam for a hybrid mattress. Latex Latex mattresses are known for their durability and comfort. Latex conforms to the body more generally than memory foam, so it bounces back quickly. One of the biggest draws to latex mattresses is that they are made from natural rubber. Cost can be prohibitive, however, as they tend to be expensive.

March is National Women’s History Month, and YWCA Lancaster has posted several events commemorating the contributions that women have made in the United States. All of these events will take place at YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime Street, Lancaster, and will be free of charge and open to the public. A First Friday All-Women Art Exhibition took place on March 1 and featured work by artists Salina M. Almanzar, Claudia Salazar, Rosa Thomas, and Loryn Spangler-Jones. Additionally, the “Soles of Lancaster” exhibit from the 20th running of YWCA Lancaster’s Race Against Racism was on display, and Elizabethtown College students Elizabeth Baker and Emily Baker provided piano music. On Thursday, March 7, a First Thursday Latino and Women’s Summit will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. through YWCA Lancaster in partnership with Lancaster First Thursday Latino. Everyone is welcome to the free summit and networking mixer, which is geared toward professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders, and representatives of businesses and organizations in Lancaster and the surrounding region. The Women’s Summit will feature a resource fair for families and a job fair for women, both from 3 to 6 p.m.; seminars on women empowerment from 5 to 7 p.m.; speakers from 7 to 8 p.m.; and a networking hour from 8 to 9 p.m. On Friday, March 8, an International Women’s Day Celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The informal and free dropin event will celebrate women, women-owned businesses, books about women, movies about women, and more. There will be games, information, and food. To see a listing of all the events, readers may visit www.ywca lancaster.org/womenshistory.

Susquehanna University Choir will perform on tour from Friday, March 8, through Tuesday, March 12. PENNYSAVER - Pequea Valley Edition - March 6, 2019 - 19

Event To Feature Former MLB Player Sid Bream Former Major League Baseball player Sid Bream will be the featured speaker during the 11th annual Sportsman Event on Saturday, March 16, at the Christian Life Center (CLC), 125 Saginaw Road, Lincoln University. Bream, who retired in 1995, is well-known for his slide into home as a member of the Atlanta Braves in game seven of the 1992 National League Championship Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, which sent the Braves to the World Series. Bream, who resides in the Pittsburgh area with his family, will speak at the event in Chester County as part of his new vocation that includes speaking in churches, for youth groups and at schools all across the United States. According to event organizer Steve Shuster, Bream is an avid outdoorsman who loves hunting, fishing and talking about his faith. “He appeals to a wide range of audiences,” said Shuster. “He is a baseball player and outdoor enthusiast. We are excited to have him (as the speaker) this year.” Shuster noted that about 200 people attend the dinner annually from throughout the Lancaster and Chester county areas. Organizers hope that Bream will attract even more attendees. “We sent (the information) to all the Little Leagues to get the word out. Anyone involved in the outdoors and sports (is

encouraged to attend),” he said. The event on March 16 will open at 4 p.m., when visitors will be able to view displays by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and other related groups. “You can go through the displays and view the silent auction items,” said Shuster. “We will have brief announcements at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will start at 5:45 p.m.” The dinner will feature wild game dishes, but other menu items will be offered, including pizza and hot dogs. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, dessert or side dish in a quantity to feed at least eight people. Electrical outlets will be available for slow cookers. “There is a prize for the most unique wild game dish,” said Shuster. “We have had everything from kangaroo to alligator.” There will also be a chili cook-off. There is no cost to enter, and no registration is required. Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners as determined by a panel of judges. Bream’s presentation will follow dinner at approximately 6:45 p.m. The evening will end with the announcement of door prize winners and silent auction winners. The Sportsman Event is open to all, including women and children. In addition to outdoor gear and hunting equipment, non-hunting items will be included in the silent auction. “We’ll have gift cards, tickets to

(a local theater), a basketful of fun summer items and sport memorabilia, including Carson Wentz signed items.” Shuster said. Also, available for purchase will be a recipe book featuring food that has been served at the covered dish dinner through the years. The Sportsman Event is presented annually by the Outdoorsman Ministry Group at CLC. The Outdoorsman Ministry is made up of members with various levels of experience in hunting, fishing, archery and photography. Membership is not limited to church members; all are welcome. The group meets every other Sunday at the church. Readers may contact Shuster at sshuster@wlgore.com for meeting dates and times. All proceeds from the event will go toward the group’s youth archery program, which is held at the CLC in October, and to its homeless outreach program. “On the last Monday of the month we serve the homeless dinner in Elkton, Maryland, at the Paris Foundation,” Shuster reported. “We serve between 75 and 100 homeless (individuals). We cook the dinner, serve it and clean up. We have about 10 or 11 volunteers every month.” There will be an admission fee for attendees over age 12. To reserve a ticket to the Sportsman Event, readers may visit www.tinyurl.com/Tickets2019. For more information, readers may contact Shuster or call the church office at 610-869-2140.

PUBLIC AUCTION

PENNYSAVER - Pequea Valley Edition - March 6, 2019 - 21

Compass Mark Awards Grants To expand the reach and impact of high-quality drug and alcohol abuse prevention services, Compass Mark supports local coalitions that are doing prevention work in the community. This year, Compass Mark received funds from the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission to award several mini-grants to projects. Compass Mark recently announced it awarded more than $26,000 in mini-grants to four Lancaster County coalitions for prevention projects that will be implemented between now and June. Grant recipients include

Ephrata Cares, Lancaster County Recovery Alliance (LCRA), Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), and The Bridges Poverty Task Force. The Ephrata Public Library, Ephrata Cares, and the Northern Lancaster HUB will design, facilitate, and staff a 21-week character education after-school program for tweens and teenagers in the Ephrata community. Designed around 12 values to strengthen and increase community protective factors against substance abuse and addiction, the after-school program, called

“Character Matters,” will take place at the Ephrata Public Library. The library will also provide reading materials for families and teenagers to educate themselves about substance abuse and addiction. LCRA will introduce the Media Education Project (MEP), which focuses on sharing evidence-based education as well as prevention strategies with the media, so that they can maximize their role as leaders in this community health issue. The primary focus will be on the use of language and attitude as well as the depiction of those

affected by addiction in the media. The LCRA MEP team will meet with representatives from local media outlets, comprising print, radio, digital, and television, to educate them face-to-face about the disease of addiction and language and image standards. DSAA will host bi-monthly family retreats where adult family members attend a full day of education about addiction, self-care, and family issues. Many people struggle to understand addiction and how it changes their loved one’s behavior. The family retreats will provide access to

education and resources that can help families better support and assist their loved ones, while also teaching self-care tactics to keep the family unit healthy. The Bridges Poverty Task Force aims to support the health and the ability of individuals to withstand challenges, such as poverty. With their grant, they will host collaboration meetings within the community to address the needs and barriers of those experiencing poverty or other social problems. The meetings will help build awareness of the Bridges Task Force, build community, and provide

access to resources to those unable to find help or unaware that help exists. The organization will also host monthly dinners during which providers and parents will be invited to share and collaborate around needs and resources. Compass Mark’s mission is to prevent addiction through education, skill-building, and community mobilization. The nonprofit serves Lancaster and Lebanon counties and seeks to guide and empower all people toward healthy, fulfilling lives free from addiction.
