Cavod To Present “Anne Of Green Gables” By Ann Mead Ash
“The cool thing about live theater and ‘Anne of Green Gables’ specifically (is that) Anne comes to life again for each generation,” said Cordell Huyard, creative director of Cavod Theatre. “A grandparent, a parent, a grandchild, and even a great-grandchild can come together and enjoy the show. (They can) have some laughs, shed some tears, and go home realizing how blessed they are to have their family.” Huyard looks forward to seeing audiences introduced to the redhaired orphan from Prince Edward Island when “Anne of Green Gables,” adapted from the 1908 book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, will be presented at the theater, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, April 5 and 12; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, April 6 and 13; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, April 7 and 14.
Ashley Gage plays Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan who is accidentally sent to live with an elderly sister and brother - Marilla, played by Melissa Ticen, and Matthew Cuthbert, played by Caleb Zimmerman - at their Green Gables farm on Prince Edward Island. Because the Cuthberts originally wanted a boy to help out around the farm, Marilla, encouraged by her friend Rachel Lynde, played by Sue Heil, at first intends to send Anne back. But she and Matthew are charmed by the talkative girl, and Anne becomes a part of their family. The foundling also carves out a niche for herself in the village, finding a best friend in Diana Barry, played by Soren Lefever, and establishing a rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe, played by Derrick Lambert. The play is codirected by Monica DePaul and Alex Weaver. Huyard said that the tale of Anne See Cavod Theatre pg 2

Church Yard Sale Will Fund Roof Project By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
After King Charles II granted him a charter for land in 1681, William Penn invited people with specific skills to come to live and work in the area, which he had named Pennsylvania. “When William Penn held a call for laborers to come over, potters were on his list,” explained Jennifer Royer, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum curator. Into the late 1800s, much pottery was redware, earthenware vessels and dishes made from clay with a high iron content that turned the pottery red when pieces were fired in a kiln. See Redware Exhibit pg 8
Jennifer Royer, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum curator, has organized the exhibit titled “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Traditions From Pennsylvania and Beyond.” The first part of the exhibit will be on display at the museum through the end of the year. Part two of the exhibit will open in March of 2020.
In fall of 2018, when Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church member Jenni Simmons heard that the church building needed a new roof, she had an idea. “I thought, ‘If we have a yard sale and people donate (items to sell), all the money we would make would be profit,’” said Simmons. Simmons took her idea to Lorin Wortel, who is chair of the capital campaign for the new roof, and they presented the suggestion to the church consistory board, and it was approved. The resulting indoor yard sale will be held in the basement of the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday, March 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 30, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. See Yard Sale pg 3
Organizers of the Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church yard sale including (from left) Ann Dell, Nancy Dearoff, Jenni Simmons, Carlyn Bowman, and Jessica Carson display items that will be sold at the sale to help raise funds for a new church roof. The sale will be held in the church basement on March 29 and 30.

coming to Green Gables resonates with the heart of Cavod, which was founded with the goal of associating the arts with the Creator, God. “We love the story of this orphan girl who is so lonely and who learns to love and be loved,” said Huyard. “That’s what we’re all about (at Cavod). We are all orphans until we are accepted into the biblical family. There is that beautiful undertone of going from a broken family to becoming a whole family unit (in this story).” To do justice to the production’s large number of scenes, Cavod is installing a turntable in the theater. “The turntable will fill the entire stage, and it will have a wall in the middle,”

explained Huyard, who added that one side of the wall will be the Cuthberts’ kitchen, while the other side might be the small school Anne attends. “The scene changes will happen in front of the audience,” said Huyard, who has engaged set designer Dave Dorman to research the regional and historical elements necessary to tell the story with accuracy. To add musical accompaniment to the show, a flautist has been retained to play during transitions and key moments. “This is one way we are making it a little different, and I think that will be a lot of fun,” said Huyard. Members of the cast and crew are looking forward to presenting the children’s classic that
Huyard believes will resonate with area families. “There are times when Anne or Marilla become frustrated, and we can see ourselves in that,” he noted. “It’s lighthearted. It has really joyful moments, and it ends very sweetly.”

Simmons began gathering items for the sale in early October. “I was moving, and I had a lot of things (to donate),” said Simmons. “We announced (that we were accepting contributions), and people began to bring donations in,” recalled Simmons, who noted that several of the five rooms set aside for the sale are already brimming. “We have a lot of brand-new Pfaltzgraff dishes,” shared Simmons, who added that many pieces and familiar patterns are represented. Other new items will include brand-name uniform shirts and pants, new pants with tags, and new pillows made with a brand-name foam. To tell the tale of potters who made redware in Pennsylvania, Royer has organized “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Traditions From Pennsylvania and Beyond.” Part one of the exhibit opened on March 10 at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, and it will remain open through Tuesday, Dec. 31. Part two, which will feature the rest
of the pieces Royer has gathered from the Barnes Foundation, The Hershey Story, Winterthur Museum, and Landis Valley’s own collection, will open in March of 2020. Royer said that when she began to plan the 2019 exhibit, she realized that redware had not been displayed in the museum for quite some time. “I started to talk to institutions and

jugs, and a food mold similar to a bundt cake pan, along with a photo of Smith with one of his apprentices. Redware items, which are individually made, range from simple utilitarian plates and bowls to unusual pitchers shaped like heads. Platters were often decorated using one of two techniques. “(Potters) put glaze down on (the item), and then they scratch through it (using a technique) called sgraffito,” said Royer, who explained that the scratches allowed the natural red color to show through. Slip decoration is a technique that creates lines and writing on pieces. Decorations often include birds and flowers. “Redware has similarities to other Pennsylvania German (creations) such as fraktur and blanket chests,” said Royer. “Pennsylvania Germans love colors and designs,” she added. “Just look at their quilts.” Use of redware was not confined to the kitchen and dining room. On display in the exhibit are a chicken waterer, a bee skep, footrests for a stove, and a variety of decorative items, including a piece in the form of a tiny cabin that is really a bank. Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum encompasses 100 acres in Manheim Township. The goal of the nonprofit organization is to collect, preserve, and interpret Pennsylvania German community history from 1740 to 1940. private collectors,” recalled Royer. “We were finding wonderful pieces, and the collection was getting bigger.” It was too big, in fact, to display all the pieces in one year, hence the two-year, two-part exhibit. Royer noted that one catalog will be published for the two parts. Royer explained that one reason so many potters came to Pennsylvania was in the makeup of the earth. “The clay here is similar to what was found in Europe,” she said, adding that most potters were also farmers. “They would farm, and then, when they had downtime, they would make pottery,” said Royer. “They had all the clay on their land, and redware was cheap to make.” Each town had its own potter throwing pieces on a wheel or making them in molds. “When you knew he was going to open his kiln, you would go to his place and pick from the kiln what you needed,” explained Royer. “You could also tell him ahead of time what you might want so he could make it.” Not all potters stayed put in one town, however. Part of the display includes pieces by Willoughby Smith, a potter who took orders and even sold pottery door-to-door. Smith, who is associated with Berks and Montgomery counties, had a special carrying case filled with his flower pot samples, which fit into the bag like nesting dolls. “Smith would go around (from house to house) and ask what size pot (a customer) wanted and sell them,” said Royer. In addition to the flower pots, the display features cups,

Empower Hope has announced that Kellyne Njonge, one of the organization’s photographers, has been recognized as the recipient of the People’s Choice Award for a photo submitted to the Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest (CGAP) 2018 Photo Contest. Applicants were asked to show how financial services expand opportunities for people living in poverty in Africa and how these services enable people to build sustainable livelihoods. More than 600 entries were judged on technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit. Njonge’s photo, titled “Seeing Our World Through the Lens of Hope,” shows a group of young boys looking through Njonge’s camera. Empower Hope exists to provide support to vulnerable children in slums and poverty-stricken areas of Kenya. Most of these children live with a single parent, with a grandparent or in an orphanage. Through its Generational Mentorship Model, Empower Hope trains, disciples and mentors indigenous young adults to come alongside children in their communities, to support, mentor and nurture them with the goal of giving them hope and purpose. The children are trained and guided to become mentors so that the model is perpetuated, and participants continue to receive mentorship through adulthood. Children are continually being added to the programs that Empower Hope offers. Donations provide long-term focus and have given most participants the ability to attend school, including primary and secondary schooling, and receive a university education. With a focus on sustainability, Empower Hope also is establishing an entrepreneurial business model in Kenya, creating jobs and equipping new and existing businesses with tools to transform lives and revitalize communities. The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is headquartered in Lebanon County, but its ability to reach the state’s nearly 800,000 veterans and their families extends to every county across the commonwealth thanks to its two Mobile Veterans Outreach Vans. The vans allow the DMVA to provide personal, one-on-one assistance to veterans in Pennsylvania so they can learn about and apply for the benefits they have earned thanks to their service. Staffed with accredited veterans service officers, each wheelchair-accessible van is a resource to learn about a wide range of federal, state, and county benefits available to qualified veterans and their families. Such benefits might include connected disability compensation, pensions, VA health care benefits, burial benefits, education benefits, vocational rehabilitation, DMVA’s six long-term care facilities, and more. In 2018, the vans traveled to 107 events across the state, and DMVA staff interacted with more than 1,500 veterans. DMVA’s outreach staff coordinates each event with county directors of veterans affairs, veteran service organizations, and local and state officials to maximize publicity and attendance. To request a van for a community event and to find out where the vans will be, readers may visit DMVA’s webpage at www.veterans.pa.gov and select the Mobile Veterans Outreach Vans link.

Agency Receives National Grant WellSpan Philhaven has received a national grant to expand its mental health and suicide prevention training to groups that include veterans’ advocates, school employees, criminal justice providers, and social service agencies in southcentral Pennsylvania. The $375,000 grant came from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. WellSpan Philhaven was one of just two mental health organizations in the state to receive a Mental Health Awareness Training grant from SAMHSA in 2018. The other one is NAMI in Erie County. WellSpan Philhaven will use the funds to expand two of its training programs: Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). Both programs teach people how to recognize and respond to someone who is having mental health problems or crises. The training shows people how to respond to someone in a way that may help prevent a tragedy. Eight partner community organizations will initially receive the training, including For the Love of a Veteran in Hanover, the Lebanon County Correctional Facility, Warwick School District in Lititz, and the We Matter Coalition in Hershey. The grant-funded training will be offered in addition to WellSpan Philhaven’s ongoing Mental Health First Aid and QPR training, which is particularly geared toward suicide prevention. WellSpan Philhaven’s certified trainers have taught more than 2,000 people in the two programs to date. The training is offered at no cost as part of its community benefit programs. Donors also help to fund the training programs. To learn more, readers may visit www.wellspan.org.

Rock Ford Sets History Program Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rock Ford Road, Lancaster, will offer “The House That Hand Built” on Saturday, April 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The program is geared toward middle and high school students. Wes Swanson, mason, teacher and historian, will share his knowledge of history and building and give attendees the opportunity to “throw and strike” a brick. Participants will also experience surveying, estimating and studying the Georgian style of architecture. Students will apply and practice their mathematics and critical thinking skills to solve problems related to rise-and-run, porch-fall and occasional errors that 18thcentury builders could have made. Attendees should report to the Rock Ford barn and bring their own lunches and beverages. The program will be held rain or shine, so youths should dress for the weather. The program is a collaboration of the Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) and Rock Ford Plantation. JLL purchased the house in 1957 and one year later established the Rock Ford Foundation to restore and maintain the property.
Rock Ford Plantation in Lancaster will host a program for middle and high school students, “The House That Hand Built,” on Saturday, April 6. There is a cost to attend the program, and space will be limited to 35 students. To make a payment, readers may visit www.rockford.yapsody.com; they should then email dnsmith875@gmail.com to request a registration form. The registration deadline is Monday, March 25. Scholarships will be offered to students in need. If an adult chooses to remain with his or her child for the program, a pay-as-you-will
donation is requested in addition to the student admission fee. Rock Ford is the preserved 18thcentury home of Edward Hand, a doctor who also served as adjutant general to George Washington in the American Revolution. The property is open for tours on Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from April to October. It is operated by the nonprofit Rock Ford Foundation. For more information, readers may visit www.rockfordplantation.org.
ABC Keystone Receives Grant Associated Builders and Contractors - Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) was recently awarded a $67,182 PASmart Pre-Apprenticeship Grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to create the Lancaster-Berks Construction PreApprenticeship Connection (P-A Connection). P-A Connection is a partnership between the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, Berks Connections/Pretrial Services (BCPS), and ABC Keystone. Through the P-A Connection partnership, PASmart Grant funds will help promote pre-apprenticeship in the construction trades, provide no-cost education for 20 individuals, and certify additional instructors at partnering organizations. P-A Connection seeks to increase the number of youths, returning citizens, and underemployed individuals in
pre-apprenticeship programs in the two-county area and to provide the skilled trade and employability skills necessary to build the workforce pipeline needed to meet the increasing demand in the commercial/ industrial construction trades. A portion of the grant funds will provide opportunities to promote the pre-apprenticeship program through open houses and awareness efforts, and funds will also be used to support Berks Connections/Pretrial Services. Berks Connections/Pretrial Services is an organization focused on improving employment participation of returning citizens through the development of a career pathway in the construction trades and other similar organizations; expanding the number of secondary and postsecondary partnerships; and raising the number of youth pre-apprentices in the con-
struction trades. Increased articulation agreements with area schools, made possible by this grant, will allow additional area youths to more easily access the pre-apprenticeship programs. ABC Keystone will serve as the registered apprenticeship sponsor and is a registered pre-apprenticeship consortium. The Keystone Apprenticeship and Training Trust oversees the ABC Keystone apprenticeship programs in seven member-determined trades. Trades currently offered include carpentry, construction craft laborer, electrical, heavy equipment operator, plumbing, HVAC, and sheet metal. Pre-apprenticeship application details for the 20 students to be served by this grant will be finalized in mid-March. To learn more, readers may visit www.abckeystone.org or contact stephanie@abckeystone.org.

Graham is known for her passion to tell people about God’s comfort and loving acceptance. She speaks of ways to move from a place of hurt to wholeness in Christ. Graham will speak from a biblical perspective on the banquet theme of “Hope in the Darkness,” while sharing her own faith journey and how it has been impacted by life’s unexpected challenges. Ruth Graham by her story and her authenticity,” recalled Dahl, who added that she feels Graham has an important message to share. “She highlighted the fact that Billy Graham was a highly respected and loved evangelist, and even his family had some difficult things happen (to them).” Dahl shared an image that she remembered Graham discussing when she spoke at the funeral. “We appreciate that she talks about her dark times and how when she returned (from those) her dad was there with loving and open arms,” said Dahl. “It was a picture for her of how God is with us.” That concept aligns with the mission of CrossNet to offer help and hope in the name of Christ. “That hit home because that is what we want our message to be at CrossNet - that God’s arms are open for everyone to come home,” said Dahl. In addition to Graham’s talk, the evening will include an update from Dahl on the ministry with assistance from Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries. “We have some exciting videos to share,” said Dahl. “One is a story of life change and the other is a program highlight video.” Part of offering help and hope is making area residents aware of the needs in New Holland. “Our focus is going to be the poverty and trauma that a lot of people in our community have experienced and how we can become numb to that (fact),” explained Dahl. “We as a community have to become more informed and be open to learn how we can best address needs and empower people and see lives changed by Jesus.” CrossNet Ministries, located in three buildings on Franklin Street, has been a fixture in New Holland for more than 25 years. Currently, the ministry offers a youth center, food and nutrition center, Power Packs affiliation, and free summer lunch program, in addition to a number of community programs. The banquet, which attracts about 1,200 area residents, will feature a buffet including a chicken dish, a beef dish, and a number of sides. A salad bar and dessert bar will also be included. The breakfast, which can accommodate 800 attendees, will also be served buffet style. Readers who would like to learn more about CrossNet may visit www.elancocross.org.
