we host a social justice institute four times per year.” This year’s Race Against Racism, which Hebert noted is the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, located at East Chestnut and North Lime streets in Lancaster, at 9 a.m. Following the run, Hebert said about 70 to 80 children typically take part in a Kids’ Fun Run, which spans Musser Park. The Fun Run will be held at about 10:30 a.m., when the run is completed and the course has been cleared. The Fun Run is open to children through age 12 for a nominal fee. The 12th annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival, will be held in Musser Park in conjunction with the race. Humanity Fest, which will be open from 7 to 11:30 a.m., is designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts. “Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert. “The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.” The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students. The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in the country and how to combat it,” explained Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.” Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a participant needs to have taken part one or have other social justice training. Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg. The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes. The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and is considered good for beginners. Walkers are welcome. More information about the race may be found at https://ywcalancaster.org/race againstracism. Runners and walkers who register prior to Monday, April 8, will be guaranteed a T-shirt and pay a discounted fee. Water bottles will be given to registered runners while supplies last. Readers who wish to register online may do so by visiting the previously mentioned website. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 7 a.m. Teams are welcome to register online.

John Hopkins surgeon Dr. Marty Makary will present a talk on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m. at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. The Row House is organizing the event. Makary is a Johns Hopkins cancer surgeon and serves jointly as a professor of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He has published more than 250 scientific articles, including articles on the surgical checklist, frailty as a predictor of surgical outcome, a survey to measure hospital safety culture, and contributions to surgical technique. Makary performed the world’s first series of laparoscopic p a n createctomies with islet autotransplantation and is the recipient of the Nobility in Science Award of the National Pancreas Foundation. At the World Health Organization (WHO), Makary led the technical workgroup on measuring surgical quality worldwide and served in leadership with Atul Gawande on the WHO Surgery Checklist committee - work that later became disseminated in the book “The Checklist Manifesto.” His current research focuses on vulnerable populations and medical billing. He has grants to study health care costs and develop new measures of high-value care. He currently serves as the executive director of Improving Wisely, a national project to reduce unnecessary care and lower health care costs. Makary, a native of central Pennsylvania, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine and was named one of the most influential people in health care by HealthLeaders Magazine. He has appeared on NBC and Fox News and written for national media outlets. He holds degrees from Bucknell University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Harvard University. His book, “Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won’t Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Health Care,” describes how the disruptors of health care are restoring medicine to its mission. There is an admission fee. Advance tickets will be discounted. Row House members plus one guest will be admitted for free. The Clinic for Special Children is marking its 30th anniversary in April. From the beginning, the clinic has been a cooperative effort among the medical, scientific, and Plain communities, and the current staff serves more than 1,000 clients in Lancaster County and throughout the world. On April 4, 1989, a small pediatric practice was founded in Strasburg by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline Morton, along with concerned members of the medical, scientific, and Plain communities, to provide care to children with genetic or other complex disorders. The following year, a post-and-beam-style building was raised by Plain volunteers at 535 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, and the Clinic for Special Children (CSC) was off and running. In the three decades since its founding, the CSC has developed from its modest roots into an internationally recognized leader and innovator in rare disease research and care. According to www.clinic forspecialchildren.org, the CSC is designed to be a medical home where children with complex genetic diseases can receive the primary pediatric care they need in an accessible, comfortable, and informed environment. The clinic’s primary but not exclusive focus is on treating the uninsured Amish and Mennonite communities of southeastern Pennsylvania. In 2018, CSC provided care to more than 1,000 active patients, and in its 30-year history, the clinic has treated patients from 42 states and 17 countries. “Caring for children with special needs is the work of a community, and for three decades, the clinic has bound us together in this common purpose,” said Dr. Kevin Strauss, the clinic’s medical director. “The CSC’s mission embodies an idea that See Clinic pg 10

Proceeds from the sale of the books will aid the CSC in its efforts to provide affordable, cutting-edge care for clients. As a nonprofit organization, the CSC is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. Additionally, past and current clients and their families, as well as collaborators of the clinic, are invited to attend a 30th anniversary celebration drop-in between 3 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. Guests may walk through the clinic and learn how it was established, what projects are being worked on, and what its future may hold. Mementos from the clinic’s history will be displayed, refreshments will be served, and copies of the anniversary books will be for sale. Admission to the celebration will be free of charge, but donations will be welcome. Anyone interested in providing any in-kind or monetary donations to cover the cost of the event is invited to contact Julia Martin at jmartin@clinicfor specialchildren.org or 717-286-4288. challenges each one of us to contribute; only together can we find new ways to enrich lives, alleviate suffering, and create hope. On the eve of the CSC’s 30th anniversary, we are grateful to all of those who have joined hands with us in this effort, and, in so doing, become part of a very special family.” In 1989, the genetic cause of disease was only known for a handful of disorders. Today, by utilizing CSC’s on-site biochemistry and genetics laboratory, which has been managed by Dr. Erik G. Puffenberger since 1998, more than 300 disease-causing genetic changes have been identified. In addition, in the 30 years since CSC’s founding, its staff members have published more than 110 peer-reviewed research papers, fueled by close internal collaboration between clinical and laboratory staff and effective cooperation with academic, scientific, and clinical partners. To commemorate the anniversary, the clinic will be selling a limited number of copies of “30 Stories for 30 Years,” a book that features first-hand accounts written by clinic clients and families, as well as “Our Story in Newsletters,” a compilation of every clinic newsletter that has been published

in a tale that employs both comedy and drama. The musical will have the 35member cast singing and dancing in styles that range from classic Broadway to country and folk for the story, which is set in Alabama and requires some characters to put on Southern accents. “The score is beautiful,” said Wagner. “There are ballads that bring the emotions of the characters out.” Wagner cited “The River Between Us,” which is sung by Edward and Will about their broken relationship, and “I Don’t Need a Roof,” which is sung by Sandra to Edward. As Sandra, Wolfe will age from age 18 into middle age. “I like playing the young version of Sandra. She is very bubbly and friendly,” noted Wolfe, who added that the more mature Sandra is a woman of extreme calm. “It’s a 180-degree switch,” Wolfe said. As Edward, Dominguez is looking forward to playing the character he called “super explosive.” “(Edward is) really imaginative,” said Dominguez. “It can be hard to embody his character. He’s got a lot of grit, but he knows how to (have fun).” Dominguez likes how the character uses his stories and personality to influence and inspire others. “I really enjoy (the song) ‘Fight the Dragons,’” said Dominguez, who added that Edward sings this song to Will. “(In

Tracy Wagner, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) drama director, chose the musical “Big Fish” for the school’s spring production because she loves the story, which is based on the Daniel Wallace novel of the same name, but she also chose it for the message it holds. “I want (audience members) to hold tight to their family relationships,” she said. “If there’s anything that’s broken or strained, (I hope they) try to heal that (because) we don’t know when our last moment will be.” “Big Fish,” a tale of extraordinary proportions, will be staged at LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, March 28 through 30, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. Wagner noted that students will sell daffodils during performance breaks to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. “During the show, there is one moment when (audience members will have a chance to) hold up the daffodils they pur-
chased and be a part of the show,” explained Wagner. The play focuses on Will Bloom, played by Kameron Garcia, who is struggling with his relationship with his father, Edward, a former traveling salesman, played by Tony Dominguez. As Will prepares to become a father, he reflects on his own childhood and the extravagant stories his father told him that included mermaids and other fantastic elements. As an adult, Will feels the tales told by his often-absent father were simply myths. He has even stopped believing the story of how his father proposed to his mother, Sandra, played by Claire Wolfe, in a field of daffodils. But, as Edward begins to lose his battle with cancer, Will decides to visit, and with encouragement from his wife, Josephine, played by Aria Yang, Will sets off to learn the truth. “Will’s wife, Josephine, (tells him), ‘If you understand the stories, you will understand the man,’” said Wagner, who added that the audience will see the stories come to life before their eyes
