World Mission Café Will Hold Grand Opening By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
The grand opening of the World Mission Café, located in the Houston Run Center, has been set for Thursday, April 18. The café is a nonprofit organization serving under the umbrella of Gap Community Church (GCC), with all proceeds going to local and global missions. The café is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. During the grand opening, the café’s full menu will be unveiled. It will include freshly made panini sandwiches and soups, as well as salads, bagels, grab-and-go items, specialty beverages and coffee. There will be suggested donation amounts for each menu item, but diners are free to pay the amount they choose. According to GCC lead pastor Cody Hall, the interaction between staff and visitors is just as important as raising funds for missions. “The food and the
drinks accent but do not drive what we do here as an organization. It’s a culture-driven organization,” Hall said. “We want to create a space and place where people can come in and explore what missions means and what discipleship means.” Community members are invited to stop in for a cup of coffee or a light meal and take time to talk to the staff about missions or any aspect of their own relationship to God. “I love the vision of it. I love that it is not solely about making a profit - it’s about people, encountering them where they are and talking to them,” said GCC culture and event coordinator Monique Moreno. “We can meet them where they are. I ask them if they need prayer for anything. They’re usually surprised, but they’re grateful. That’s what I like about this place. It’s just a very open atmosphere.” See World Mission Café pg 9
Inviting the community to the grand opening of the World Mission Café at Houston Run Center on April 18 are Gap Community Church (GCC) members, including (from left) media producer Nate Hoskins, GCC lead pastor Cody Hall, café administrator Alli Zimmerman, culture and events coordinator Monique Moreno and volunteer Elizabeth Hingle.

“More Love Letters” Provides Encouragement By Ann Mead Ash
“ When my girls were teenagers, we heard of ‘If You Find This Letter,’” said Deanna Riccardelli, a member of More Love Letters Lancaster, referring to a memoir by Hannah Brencher, who began writing letters to strangers in New York City when she found herself struggling emotionally. “She would write the kinds of things she wanted to hear,” explained Riccardelli, noting that Brencher found that sharing and encouraging others helped her out of her own depression. After Brencher wrote about her See More Love Letters pg 8
Deanna Riccardelli (left), Jennifer Oehme Knepper (center), and Riccardelli’s son, Levi, worked on writing letters of encouragement when More Love Letters Lancaster met on Feb. 22. The group meets monthly for the purpose of supporting those in need of encouragement with handwritten letters.

Wingfield traveled to Romania to hold meetings on soccer fields, Yoder and Horning went along to help with setup and tear-down. It was there that the men met Mircea Damien, who was ministering to the people of Romania in the first years after the fall of communism in 1989. A friendship between the three men developed, and Yoder and Horning began helping Damien, first by building churches and later with the founding of an orphanage, after-school program, and outreach to Gypsies, also known as Roma, living in southern Romania. In 2001, Romanian Christian Outreach Foundation (RCOF) was founded. To help meet the organization’s annual budget, a yearly dinner is held. This year’s event, which will feature a menu including fried chicken, will be held at Yoder’s Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Monday, April 29, at 6:15 p.m. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. The evening will feature the comedy of Gordon Douglas. Douglas, who has previously performed locally, is known for entertainment that is imbued with humility, honesty, and a passion for God. Douglas combines life lessons and even painful events into a program that mixes reality with his love of laughter. Douglas and his wife,
Dawn, have five children. Yoder recalled that he first started helping Damien to build a church in the Hunedoara region, which is in the central western area of Romania, in 1991. “It took about three years to build,” said Yoder, who added that the church quickly attracted people from surrounding villages, who then wanted their own churches closer to home. The group next began working in southern Romania, which is inhabited mostly by those of Gypsy descent. In addition to building churches, RCOF regularly helps purchase shipments of wood for that area for heating fuel. Truckloads of flour, cornmeal, and oil are delivered as well. “The Gypsies are very poor,” explained Yoder’s daughter, Denise Zimmerman, who is helping to organize the banquet. “Sometimes they have to choose between heating their house and feeding their family.” Around the year 2000, Damien pointed out the need for an orphanage in the area. The Romanian government was not providing state orphanages, and many orphans were homeless. “We decided to purchase a house with three acres,” said Yoder, who noted that the land provided room for a garden and an area for children to play. “As (House of Joy orphanage) grew, we needed another place, so we built a second home with single and double rooms,” added Yoder, noting that the 10 children lived in a

A Marionette Passion Play will be performed on Saturday, April 20, at 1:45 and 5 p.m. in a Christian coffeehouse atmosphere located at the Holy Land Christian Theater in Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall, 3375-2 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Joe Dunfee is the new steward and performer of the play. The show covers the time from Jesus being brought before Pilate to the resurrection. It will run for an hour, including a 15minute intermission. The large, professionallevel marionette production features 3-foottall marionettes, professional voice actors, and orchestration on recording. Volunteer performers are utilized. The performance is not geared toward young children; third grade is the lowest recommended age limit, provided the children, accompanied by their parents, can sit quietly throughout the performance. The idea for the show was conceived in 1986 by Kenneth Kleinfelter, who ministered

as “Captain Ken” in his marionette ministry based in Renovo, and his puppeteer friend Robert Knechtel, who was an accomplished marionette maker and performer, having been on television in the Buffalo, N.Y., area throughout the 1950s and ’60s. Knechtel passed away a decade ago, and Kleinfelter is unable to perform. His family decided to give the Marionette Passion Play to Dunfee of Gordonville. With the show in its new home, Dunfee has assembled a volunteer team and is seeking additional places to perform in the Lancaster County area. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. For more information, readers may contact Dunfee at 717-203-8670 or joe@dunfee.com.

experiences, she founded The World Needs More Love Letters, and a movement was born. “(I) did this with my daughters six or seven years ago,” recalled Riccardelli. “We would leave love letters around the city (of Lancaster).” More recently, when Brencher asked for people to gather and write more love letters, Riccardelli decided to get involved. “(More Love Letters is) trying to build community groups (that) write to (others) in
the community who need encouragement,” she explained. On Feb. 22, Riccardelli and Jennifer Oehme Knepper met at a small café in Lancaster to write. It was the third month that More Love Letters had met. The group, which Knepper noted usually includes up to seven individuals, moves its meeting location in order to support local businesses. “Today we wrote letters to those people listed on the website,” noted Riccardelli, explaining that

the individuals on the More Love Letters website are nominated by others who write down the nominees’ stories. Six letter recipients are chosen each month. “Last month the group focused on people in the local community who could use encouragement,” explained Riccardelli, who added that the group would love to receive nominations of area residents who could benefit from an uplifting letter. “ We have watched for (people) in the news. It doesn’t have to be something major,” shared Riccardelli, who added that someone who has broken a leg and is housebound might appreciate a letter. Recipients might also receive a letter that is more congratulatory than consoling. “If they are doing something amazing, we tell them, ‘We see you and appreciate what you’re doing,’” said Riccardelli. Knepper emphasized the significance of a handwritten letter in a time when texting and email are more often the methods by which people communicate. “We always connected with writing, and we’ve lost that,” she said. Riccardelli agreed. “In your mailbox, you have bills, flyers, and junk, but when you find something personally handwritten in there … it’s super exciting to see,” she said. “We keep talking about times in our lives when people have sent us letters,” noted Riccardelli. “I have received letters from strangers. You wouldn’t think that could be encouraging, but it can be.” Knepper noted that she has cherished letters that were sent to her after her father died. W hen the two women and Riccardelli’s son, Levi, met on Feb. 22, one of the letters they wrote was to a veteran who was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. “We are sitting here trying not to weep over this one letter,” said Riccardelli. Knepper noted that there are benefits to the letter writers as well as the recipients. “What (Brencher) did was therapeutic,”
noted Knepper. “On our end it is too.” “It gives you perspective in life,” added Riccardelli. Although the groups has been meeting in the mornings, Knepper noted that some evening meetings may be set in order to allow more interested people to take part. Children are welcome as long as parents bring along quiet activities to keep the children occupied. Readers who would like to learn more may search for “More Love Letters Lancaster” on Facebook or Instagram.

The idea for using the space as a café came through Hall’s son Colby. “He had a significant encounter with God that literally saved his life. Out of that came this new person. Out of that came this heart in him to create a space so church was not just a Sunday morning event,” Hall said. “The idea is that we have to be the church, not just go to church. About that

same time we had started leasing this space. We felt like what God was telling us was, ‘Do something different.’” Through Colby came the connection to Alli Zimmerman, who has always wanted to run a coffee shop and is now serving as café administrator. “One of my favorite parts about being here is meeting people, but also when I see people come in, I know my role here is to sit down and chat with them,” she said. Zimmerman is involved with Young Life, a ministry that conducts outreaches to high schoolers. “I wanted to create a space where kids can come in and talk to me as a Young Life leader, so they can be discipled and grow in their faith,” she said. The café is planning a variety of events such as a monthly worship event. “We’re looking at doing events that give people a space and place to encounter God in different ways,” Hall said. “We want to do much more education to help people understand what we think God is doing on a large scale.” The café is already popular with those who work in the Houston Run complex or visit there for business or to use the public library branch. Hall is hoping that the entire community will enjoy the café and open their hearts toward missions. “It’s to represent this idea that God is doing something big. Just because we’re in little bitty Gap doesn’t mean that we need to be thinking on a small scale,”

as did junior Aydan Yothers, who went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and three runs batted in out of the number five spot in the lineup. Leadoff man Jaden Estevez went
1-for-4 and scored two runs. Dalton Temple, who also swiped a bag, went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two more driven in. One of those RBI’s came on a sacrifice fly. Temple also drew two walks. Collin Bailey drove in a run on a single and scored. Winston Thomas slugged PV’s only double of the game. He drove in three runs and scored twice. Zach Lynch (2-for-4) also helped the offense as did Dale Stoltzfus, who walked three times and scored two runs. Jack Olonovich started for Pequea and tossed three innings to pick up the win. Cameron Yoder came on in relief and tossed three more innings. They each gave up two unearned runs. Yothers finished the game with one inning, striking out two and giving up one meaningless run on two hits. In a game that was shortened due
to the mercy rule, the Braves topped Lebanon Catholic 15-0 on Wednesday. They scored three in the first, seven in the second and put up a five-spot in the third frame. Gavin Eby pitched a three-inning complete game, allowing two hits and two walks while setting down six Beaver batters on strikes. SOFTBALL The softball team took advantage of 20 walks in a Section Four contest on Wednesday, winning 21-0. The game was shortened due to the mercy rule. Josie Burns was the recipient of the 21-run offensive support. The senior pitcher struck out six Beaver batters in the shutout. Maggie Johnson went 2-for-2 with a triple and a single, driving in six of the Braves’ runs. Olivia Ammon stroked a bases-loaded double and drove in three. Thanks to all of the walks, the Braves scored their 21 runs
on seven hits. Head coach Doug High has high hopes for this squad, which welcomes back several players including Johnson, junior Sarah Moore and senior shortstop Makenzi Dienner. “Maggie Johnson was secondteam All-State last year,” High noted. “Sarah Moore was also second team All-State. She just shows up and does her job well. “Maggie is a strong leader too both verbally as well as on the field,” continued the coach. “Makenzi Dienner is a three-year starter. She’s one of our captains.” With Dienner at short, the Braves are solid up the middle as junior Caroline Bragg takes care of second base, Emily Ammon, a freshman, works behind the plate and Abigail Tobelman patrols center field. “Caroline Bragg at second base is as dependable as they come,” said High. “Middle infield is very

Abby Tobelman does well in center.” As for High’s expectations this season? “We should contend for the district title,” he replied. “We have a very talented team.” TENNIS Pequea Valley had a busy week, playing three matches - two nonleague and one L-L League - in three days on the tennis courts. The Braves won all three and improve to 5-1 overall (2-0 league). In Tuesday’s home match versus Lampeter-Strasburg, the Braves posted a 6-1 victory, winning all four singles matches in straight sets. In doubles competition, Brady Burns and Devon Clemmer coasted to an 8-0 win at number one as did Hunter Winey and Josh Gingerich. The L-S pair of Alex Braun and Luke Kelly posted an 8-5 win against Josh Heinrich and Nehemiah Glick for the Pioneers’ lone team point. Burns won 6-0, 6-1 at first singles. Clemmer (6-2, 6-0) also came through as did Winey, who won both sets by a 6-1 score, and Gingerich (6-3, 6-0). Playing at Lancaster Mennonite the following afternoon, the Braves duplicated the winning margin from Tuesday. Burns and Clemmer worked together nicely again for a doubles win, 8-1. Heinrich and Josh Jarvis came out on top 8-5 at third doubles while Winey and Gingerich were sandwiched in between with a close 8-5 setback to their LM opponents. Gingerich won the first singles 6-3 6-3 while Winey won the second

Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train passed through southcentral Pennsylvania as it carried the body of the 16th president from Washington, D.C., to his final resting place in his home state of Illinois. During the solemn procession, the train passed through the grounds that are now Stone Gables Estate on April 22, 1865. To mark the 154-year anniversary, a re-enactment is planned at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, on Monday and Tuesday, April 22 and 23. Bells and whistles, reenactors, and mounted troops will celebrate the arrival of the Lincoln Funeral Car replica, also known as “United States, when it travels on the .62-mile of original railbed as the original train did on April 22, 1865. There will be two opportunities for folks to experience the reenactment, as one-day general admission tickets and two-day VIP experience packages are available. Both days of the event will include plenty of historical
sights and experiences, a highlight of which will be the fullscale replica of the original Lincoln Funeral Car. The replica Lincoln Funeral Car will be fully furnished as the funeral car was on April 22, 1865, including a replica of Lincoln’s coffin. The reenactment of the train traveling on the original route will take place on April 22 from 12:05 to 12:30 p.m. Guests may also visit the original railbed built in 1832 and an original hand-cut and hand-laid stone wall. There will also be a fullscale replica of an original 4-4-0 steam locomotive and a periodcorrect passenger car from the mid-1800s to carry the troops. A band and music appropriate to the time period will also be featured, and there will be reenactors in period-correct garb, photos and history displays, living history lectures by Abraham Lincoln presenter Fritz Klein and others, and Lincoln funeral train art located in the museum at The Star Barn. Visitors may also check out the restored and rebuilt Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge and Sutler’s Village and take tours of the 1877 Star Barn Village and

since the organization’s start in 1998. The programs focus on including all participants in every activity regardless of ability level, meaning the organization has special requirements for a future facility. In addition, Aaron’s Acres hopes to consolidate its current facilities, including administrative offices and storage units, which are scattered across Lancaster County. The nonprofit is open to either developing a new building or repurposing an existing site.
During Aaron’s Acres’ 20th anniversary gala in December 2018, the organization unveiled conceptual designs for its future facility, but the group remains open to discussion. The project is estimated to cost between $4 million and $5 million. Aaron’s Acres is seeking the public’s help in its search for a new location. To help, readers may call Aaron’s Acres’ Lancaster office at 717-917-6101. More information can be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

The camp will begin at 5 p.m. on May 31 and end at 1 p.m. on June 2 and will be held at Gretna Glen in Lebanon. Offered through Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, Camp Chimaqua is an overnight weekend camp for children ages 6 through 12 who have a loved one who has died. The camp aims to help children explore their feelings, develop coping skills, and build self-confidence. Group and individual activities will be incorporated to help children learn how to express their feelings and share memories of their loved ones. Campers enjoy fun activities such as swimming and making s’mores around a campfire, as well as participating in grief-related activities. A trained, volunteer adult buddy is paired with each child for companionship, support, and supervision throughout the weekend. There is a nominal cost for the registration fee, and financial assistance is available. Applications are due by Friday, May 10, and children will meet with a counselor to determine if the camp best meets their needs. Space is limited. For details and registration, readers may call 717-391-2413 or visit www.hospiceandcommunity care.org and click on Kids and Teens Support.

To support parents and students in their search for summer camps, IU13 has compiled a list of camps/programs designed for students with unique needs. The list for the 2019 season includes daytime and residential camps across Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York. The camps serve a broad range of age groups and grades, and they can host students with autism, AD/HD, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and/or physical and development disabilities. Activities include swimming, arts and crafts, music, hiking, recreational activities, and more. The comprehensive list of camps includes hours, contact information, and information about the services available to support students with special needs. The camp list is compiled annually by IU13 staff and offered to the public free of charge. To access the list, readers may visit www.iu13.org/ students-families/special-ed/student -activities3/summer-camps/.
