Time For Tea - Cornerstone Schedules Fundraiser BY ANN MEAD ASH

fter a few years of living with COVID-19 restrictions, which offered little or no chance for people to dress up and go out, Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone has announced its 12th annual Ladies’ Tea and Auction. This year’s high tea will include all the traditional activities associated with the event, such as food, prizes, and a live auction. “It’s a very fancy, feminine event,” said Jennie Straub, director at Cornerstone. “It’s nice to get dressed up.” “The ladies (who attend) get to dress up and wear hats,” said Kathy Greig, director of business affairs for Cornerstone, who explained that table hostesses are needed for six more tables. A table hostess decorates and hosts her table and invites eight to 12 guests. The theme for this year’s tea is “Redemptive Love,” and the event will be held on Saturday, May 7, at Linville Hill Elementary School, 295 S. Kinzer Road, Paradise. Tickets that are purchased by Monday, April 25, will be discounted.

“Proceeds from this event will help us continue to serve men and women facing a difficult pregnancy decision.” “There’s a transformation when the tables are decorated,” said Greig. “You walk into the room and 15 to 18 tables are decorated.” Prizes are awarded for the best decorated tables, and a prize is also bestowed upon the woman who wears the best decorated hat. Food that will be served at the tea will include homemade scones with lemon curd or jam; chicken salad on a croissant; asparagus, bacon, and Swiss quiche; pumpernickel finger sandwiches with cucumber, ham, and chive cream cheese; a pastry

puff with blueberry sharp white cheddar and lemon zest; and an antipasto skewer with salami, basil, mozzarella, and cherry tomatoes. Featured desserts will be lemon pound cake with vanilla butter cream, strawberry tarts, and chocolate macarons. In addition to the food and fun, the tea will feature a live auction including about 100 items donated by local businesses. This year, auction items will include tickets to the Ark Encounter and to Sight & Sound Theatre, themed baskets, restaurant gift cards, home décor, an Airbnb stay, and more. Esbenshade’s Garden Center has donated items for an auction of flowering baskets and planters. Funds raised by the tea will help support Cornerstone’s vision to empower individuals to embrace lifehonoring choices. “Proceeds from this event will help us continue to serve men and women facing a difficult pregnancy decision,” said Straub. Women who would like to host a table or purchase tickets may email event coordinator Kristi Martin at kri@pregnancyresources.org or call 717-442-8694.

Volunteers Sought For Convoy

On Friday, April 29, fifth-grade students at both Salisbury Elementary and Paradise Elementary will take part in a private livestream lesson with poet Kenn Nesbitt. The learners are looking forward to the event after first interacting virtually with Nesbitt via a free lesson they took part in on Feb. 14. “When we enter a poetry unit, I never know what kinds of reactions I will get (from the students),” said Courtney Rafter, who teaches at Paradise Elementary,

“Being a clown is about building relationships,” said Andrew Imhoff, whose clown name is Roland. Imhoff has been a volunteer clown with the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy for a number of years. “I love building relationships with kids and being able to see children happy no matter what they’re going through.” See Make-A-Wish pg 3

A grant from the Pequea Valley Education Foundation has helped bring virtual poetry lessons with a published author to district fifth-graders.

“but (Nesbitt) brought it to life.” Rafter added that her students were anxious to take part and since then many have spent their free time writing their own poems. “I was like, ‘Outstanding,’” she said. The April 29 virtual lessons will be covered by a grant from the Pequea Valley Education Foundation (PVEF), which was written by Rafter and Anita Girvin, who teaches fifth grade at Salisbury. Both Mark and Imhoff noted that they enjoy the clowning experience. “Every year, I have more fun than the year before,” said Mark. “It’s a whole new story every year,” added Imhoff. Amy emphasized that peo-

Clown organizer Amy Nolt, who goes by Harmony when she is wearing her black vest adorned with musical notes, would love to see at least 25 volunteer clowns join her when the Make-A-Wish Convoy returns to its typical format after a two-year absence. For 2022, the Convoy will be held once again at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim, where it will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8. The carnival will begin at 8 a.m., and the trucks will leave at 1:30 p.m. Event activities for the public will include a chicken dinner and live auction. Make-AWish grants the wishes of children facing life-threatening illnesses, and the Truck Convoy provides funding for more than 75% of the wishes granted by the Philadelphia/Delaware/Susq uehanna Valley Chapter every year. Make-A-Wish clowns may begin as early as 8 a.m. by taking part in the carnival. Some clowns do tricks, but others simply brighten the faces of the Make-A-Wish kids. “If you can put a smile on a kid’s face for 30 seconds, that may be the smile he needs for his whole life,” said Imhoff. About $10,000 of the funds raised by the Convoy is collected by the clowns, who grab buckets and follow the trucks in cars driven by volunteers. Amy noted that she will need one car and driver for about every four clowns who are sent out to collect. “Anybody can be a clown,” said Amy, who first began clowning as part of a college ministry. She connected with Make-A-Wish nearly 30 years ago when her husband, Mark, met up with Dennis Ober of Manheim, perhaps better known as Obie the clown. Amy soon convinced Mark to join her at the Convoy, and he chose a golfing theme for his clown outfit to go with the name Teed Off. Their first daughter clowned with them at the tender age of 9 months. Imhoff performed magic tricks and twisted balloon animals for a few years before meeting Ober at a church event. “A lot of people think about (professional clowns) when they hear ‘clowns needed,’” said Imhoff. But he said no experience is necessary to volunteer. Imhoff likes to

Sharing The Gospel Through Music

Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication and the Association of Community Publishers R081004

“The Gospel According to Bach” will be presented at St. Stephen Church in New Holland. BY ANN MEAD ASH

Clair Leaman, a member of St. Stephen Church, New Holland, is looking forward to the church hosting “The Gospel According to Bach,” and he wants area residents to know about the heart behind the group’s presentation. “They are doing it because Tom (Elliott) has this vision of people hearing the Scripture and the story of the crucifixion and being touched by it and coming to know Christ as their savior,” said Leaman. “That’s his goal.” Trombonist Tom Elliott and his wife, Cheryl, who is a violinist, will present “The Gospel According to Bach” with other professional musicians and a narrator at St. Stephen Church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m. The event is free, and registration is not necessary to attend. According to Leaman, Elliott started with J.S. Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion,” and arranged portions as solos for trombone or other instruments or to be played by the ensemble. “A narrator reads Scripture, and they weave it all together,” said Leaman. Professional musicians who make up the rest of the ensemble are Richard Amoroso on cello, Scott Antony on organ, Emilie Park on violin, and Ana Tsinadze on viola. The shortened presentation will feature evangelist and vocalist Todd Thomas. Leaman explained that the “St. Matthew Passion” includes seven chorales. “ When they get to the chorales, (Elliott) leads the audience accompanied by the

ensemble, and they sing the chorales,” said Leaman. The Elliotts studied at the Curtis Institute of Music before leading successful music careers. Tom is a founder and former director of the Westminster Brass, and Cheryl served as associate concertmaster for the Minnesota Orchestra. Amoroso attended the Philadelphia Col-

lege of the Performing Arts, earning degrees in performance. He has played with the Philly Pops Orchestra. Antony is a freelance musician and accompanist who studied at the Peabody Conservatory. He serves as organist at Cresheim Valley Church and as rehearsal pianist and music director for a number of regional theaters.

competitions in which to enter student poetry. “I had used his website for resources before,” shared Girvin, who noted that Nesbitt has written original children’s poetry. She noticed the free, livestreamed lessons and asked Rafter if their classes should join in one. According to Rafter, the Valentine’s Day lesson was timed perfectly to the poetry unit curriculum. “(Nesbitt) was so interactive,” said Rafter, who noted that several other U.S. classes and some Canadian schools were watching along with the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) students. “He acknowledged my kids in my classroom,” said Rafter. Nesbitt led the classes in creating an acrostic poem. Rafter’s class members wrote one about a grandparent, while Girvin’s wrote one about a teacher. Rafter said that when a Paradise student made a suggestion Nesbitt liked, he mentioned the child’s name and the Paradise location on the livestream. “He made a virtual experience

She added that the event will come at the end of a week of state-required testing, which will give the students something to look forward to throughout that week. Amy Koberstein, PVHS assistant principal and member of the PVEF board, said that giving away grants for educational purposes is the goal of PVEF. “That is the primary function of our education foundation,” she said. “We raised money in November during the Extraordinary Give, and that money was immediately released back into the hands of PVSD facilitators to improve educational programming for the kids.” PVEF formed in 2013. A nine-member board, made up of community members and active PVSD staff members, oversees grant distribution. Two watershed restoration plans coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) in Pennsylvania will receive over $3 million in direct federal funding in the fiscal year 2022 omnibus spending package signed recently by President Biden. One of these is the Pequea Creek Watershed restoration plan in Lancaster and Chester counties, for which Sens. Bob Casey and Ben Cardin requested $2.18 million. It was the first time in a decade that senators were able to request funds for specific projects in annual appropriations bills. The Pequea Creek watershed feeds into the Chesapeake Bay.
